How could facing her fears leave her feeling so—guilty?Notwithstanding the Red Cross knitting, the sugar rations, and her mum’s wacky inspiration to put carrots in the plum pudding—Nora has no difficulty acknowledging that her wartime Christmas has turned out every bit as worthwhile as Frank promised it would be. But as the comfort and warmth swirl around her on Christmas Day, Nora finds herself haunted by an unrelenting question. Why does she get to spend Christmas with all the people she loves most—while thousands of innocent children are facing the holiday far away from their families and homes? A country manor filled with evacuated schoolgirls wasn’t exactly the place Nora was planning to look for answers. But then—neither was a childhood storybook or an unexpectedly poignant library donation, either. Is it possible that the miracle of Christmas can still offer the healing and hope that all of them need? And if it can—will Nora somehow find the courage to carry that hope back to the war-torn city where she belongs? If you love WWII fiction, heartwarming characters, inspirational lessons, and a tiny thread of squeaky-clean romance, then Library Blitz is the newest series you don’t want to miss!
Courtenay Burden is a Victorian fanatic and author of historical fiction. She loves working with yarn, playing the occasional game of chess, devouring history, and discovering new ways to cook the humble potato. When she’s not writing, you’ll find her sketching, reading anything published more than a century ago, or attempting to sing alto with growing confidence. 5 stars. Did I cry? Yes. This story is the perfect continuation to Happy Tonight. I love the family relationships and the cozy home vibes, but most of all I love the deep message of how Christmas means things will be "all right" despite everything. The reading, the little boarding girls, and the WWII vibes are just... perfect. 10/10 recommend.
Awwww this series just keeps getting better and better. And honestly, the historical tidbits at the end of each book are as good as the actual story, I'm learning so much and am so grateful to Miss Burden for adding them in!
Why did something so short make me tear up? I very seldom find tears in my eyes when I read, but this short story touched me. Loved the continuation of the series. Eagerly waiting the next one!
This short story set at Christmas during the Blitz moved me to tears. The joyous, generous spirit of the holiday was beautifully captured in the hearts of the children.
