While reading this, I kept thinking—it’s like Saw met Stephen King, but with soul. It doesn’t copy either, but it carries the same unsettling energy: a sense that something deeper is happening beneath the surface. Yes, it’s horror—but not the jump-scare, scream-at-the-screen type. This is horror with meaning. Every twist felt intentional. Every choice, deliberate.
What I loved most? The realism. These characters didn’t make dumb or unbelievable decisions. The story was psychological, gripping, and disturbingly possible. I could honestly picture this happening in real life—and that’s what made it so chilling. I also appreciated how Sonya explored themes of childhood trauma and how those early wounds shape who we become as adults. She doesn’t shy away from showing how our choices ripple outward—not just affecting us, but the people around us too.
I especially connected with Julie. She frustrated me, broke my heart, and yet I couldn’t stop rooting for her. That kind of emotional pull isn’t easy to achieve.
And that ending? I did not see it coming. It flipped everything I thought I understood. The imagination behind this story is brilliant. Plot-wise, this book is an underrated gem.
This was not my usual type of book so was not for me. Hence the 3 Stars. I appreciated the twist at the end but felt like I was reading a collection of bad dreams as I did not feel empathetic towards them. I would have liked more of a character build up at the start so I felt like I knew them a bit before they went through their individual trials to get that connection. I could see how this could make a good film 🎥 Overall an OK book 🙂
What starts as a relaxing retreat quickly turns into an unforgettable mystery. With unexpected twists and gripping suspense, this book is impossible to put down.
Just when I thought I had it all figured out, the story took another turn! An exciting, well-written mystery that keeps you engaged until the very last page.
