Sexy, snarky, and fast-paced, Monster of the Silver City is a second chance fantasy romance with dual point-of-view (his and hers) and characters who think, act, and curse like adults. This epic romantasy about former lovers and stolen magic is perfect for readers looking for swords, sorcery, and spice.
Monster of the Silver City releases in April 2025!
Raised by wolves in the mountains of Colorado, Meredith Hart traveled the world to seek her fortune, fell in love with a half-elf ranger, and now lives in a cabin deep in the Maine woods where she writes steamy fantasy romance with snarky, reluctant heroes and the warrior women who love them.
She also writes mythology-inspired paranormal romance under the pen name Samantha MacLeod, and she has occasionally been known to pen a poem or two. Sometimes they even make it into her books.
Monster of the Silver City is the second standalone in the Killers of the Towers series and focuses on characters first mentioned in Book 1. You don’t need to read Book 1 to enjoy this one but there will be mild spoilers!
Tropes: 👀 Dual POV 💞 Second chance romance 😏 All the banter 💋 Forced proximity 🤐 Secrets ⚔️ On the run 🏠 Found family 🌶️: open door
Veloria joined the Towers to pursue greatness. Studious and bright, her path was clear…until she fell for the wrong man. One who broke her heart and never looked back. Her certain future is suddenly thrown awry when her past lover returns.
Syrus has been secretly imprisoned by the Exemplars for the past few years. Now, he’s desperate to defeat them and win back the love of his life.
The author intricately explores their vulnerabilities, heartache, and desperation for freedom to live and love. Can they move past the secrets between them and the hurt from their pasts?
Monster of the Silver City weaves a wondrous tale full of magic, adventure, and second chances. So thankful to the author ARC opportunity. This is my honest and voluntary review.
Meredith! I was so excited for this book because of the first one! I needed to know what happened between Veloria and Syrus!!
I loved how well you made their characters and their relationship!! They literally communicate about everything with each other, they love hard and fight harder for what they believe in! I loved how they fought together. Loved together. I loved the spice. I just loved everything about it and honestly am really hoping theres another book coming!! Thank you for the chance to early read this one is SOO GOOD!
I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own. (via the author)
The pacing moved the story right along and the spice were done well for this story. The forced proximity added a fun element to the second chance romance. I liked seeing Syrus and Veloria reunite and work together to stand against the Towers. Also loved seeing some characters from the first one!
Synopsis: Veloria fell in love in the Towers to an Elite which is forbidden. When he leaves on a mission, Veloria decides to complete her studies and earn her status of Exemplar. Syrus had everything he should have wanted, including power and status from his family. With his status as an Elite in the Towers, he should be happy. But now he is in chains and hoping to buy enough time for Veloria to escape. When Veloria becomes aware of the deep secrets of where the magic of the Towers comes from, she must make decisions. As there are some secrets the Towers will not hesitate to kill in order to keep.
Review: I overall really enjoyed this book and found that Veloria and Syrus communicated well. With the Dual POV, I typically find that I deeply enjoy the Male Lead’s POV the most and this was the case again. Syrus has gone through so much by the time the book begins and is retelling his story to us as we go. Favorite Quote: “Gods, I forgot what it felt like to kiss him like this. To ache and burn for him like this. I told myself I could live without him, without this, but hells, what a sad life that would be.”
Bottom Line: Yes! Could be standalone but better as a series.
Fair warning, I read this in the midst of a slump and it was not nearly good enough to pull me out. I’ll try not to be too harsh because of that. But ultimately this was boring, and predictable. When the entire romance “tension” hinges on a simple misunderstanding that could easily be cleared up with one conversation, it leaves you with no tension at all. Because really all you’re waiting for is that one conversation to happen (it does) and then they pick up where they last left it. There’s no groveling, lessons needing to be learned, etc., it’s all things out of their control that lead to a trick by someone else. All things made clear in chapter one. So what are we here for? The plot?
The plot is basically the same as many others. Disillusioned followers try to right their wrongs a little, but these two are actually terrible at it. They can’t get one step into a plan without getting caught out. I wouldn’t want them on my team based on their track record. They may be cute together, but stay in your retirement village doing lowest level recon, because that’s the best you’re capable of my dears lol.
This sequel to Monster of the Dagger Mountains is even better than the first one! The writing style is easy to follow, and the pacing was just right. While this isn’t a high-stakes fantasy, the relationship between Syrus and Veloria is really well explored. Both are adult characters, and their interactions reflect that maturity. There’s no unnecessary miscommunication, even though Veloria was deeply hurt by Syrus, which I really appreciated.
In this second installment, we also get much-needed lore about the magic system and the (very) evil Towers, especially in the first half of the book. I also think shifting the setting to the Continent in book three is a great move, as it will give us more insight into the old gods magic.
Overall, this was a great read, perfect for romance readers wanting to try romantasy.
A huge thanks to the author, Meredith Hart, for once again trusting me with this ARC. I can’t wait to dive into Aveus’ story next!
Book two released and I’m super excited for this world. If you’ve read other series by Meredith Hart you’ll probably recognize certain details and places that emerge in this book. Little Easter eggs throughout regarding the Towers. I giggled and kicked my feet as I came across them. 🥰
This being book two, it does follow book one but it features a completely different main couple and the setting this time is in the very heart of the Towers. I loved the scene changes and the new characters. Plus the cameo of characters from book one has me itching for all of their stories and to know the fate of the other Elites.
A m/f romantic fantasy that follows book one with higher stakes, magic, second chance lovers, betrayals, daring escapes and ending in a happily ever after for now.
Syrus and Veloria were lovers once upon a time. They had a plan to run away together, but Syrus never showed the night they agreed to run. He ends up forced on a ship to another continent by the Examplars of the Towers. Veloria is left behind and she resolves to rise higher in the ranks at the Towers. Two years later, Cyrus is brought back by the Exemplars bring him back as a prisoner. Veloria stumbles upon his holding cell and realizes something is not quite right. She breaks Syrus out and they run from the Towers.
This was a very enjoyable second chance romance. I love Syrus and Veloria. They had a lot of things to work through, but their time together after escaping was very endearing. I loved returning to this world and reading a new story. I'm very excited for the next story!
Thank you to @writermeredithhart for the gifted eARC.
Ahhh Meredith you’ve done it again! As you can see I finished it in basically one day started at 1am and finished at 9pm. 😂 ugh oh my gosh the way I flew through the book it was just as good as the first one!! Vel and Syrus I just loved them as much as I loved rez and Kira!! The second chance romance that had me oh my hands and knees with everything they went through!! I just loved this story so much and I was so happy when rez and syrus finally reunited!! I’m so excited to see where all their journeys take them next and see more of them all together. I will be waiting for the next book to see how this ends because smh I’m sorry the towers need to burn some more. Thank you for keeping me on my toes with this amazing story and I can’t wait to read more. Did I mention I loved it? ❤️🔥
This is the second book in the killer of the Towers Series and we dive into Veloria and Syrus story. Like book one, this is a fast-paced romantasy. The romance in both books are different and unique in their own ways. In this particular story we encounter a mature relationship between the main characters. We also learn more about the magic system of the Towers and the source of arcanite in this installment. Between the second chance romance and the adventures in the story, I was entertained throughout the whole book.
After that amazing epilogue, I’m looking forward to book three and the reappearance of characters from previous stories.
Thank you Meredith Hart for the opportunity to read your ARC!
Thank you Meredith Hart for this gifted ebook. I truly enjoyed it and these opinions are my own!
I read book one and really liked it. I felt like there was so much missing about the magic system and now we see why! There are so many secrets that are coming to light surrounding the Towers and magic and everything they've ever been taught about it.
On top of all of that Veloria and Syrus reunite after years of being apart and realize that things are not as they seem. They find themselves working to get away from the Towers but end up back in their clutches. But not for long. There's banter, longing and tension between our MCs and it is so good.
Tropes include forced proximity, found family, they are on the run, and so many secrets.
I got this as an early copy and I can't express how much I appreciate it and how much I absolutely love these books. Stand alone or read all together they are fantastic.
I love this little series and the more we get into the more you find out just how corrupt the Towers truly are.
This is a great second chance love story. Vel and Sylus have a great chemistry together. I love the fact that this book shows so much open communication, something the first one kind of struggled with but they got better at it. These two with the shared past had to learn who the person in front of them was again. They complimented each other so well.
A great sequel that focuses on Syrus and Veloria’s story. I loved the high stakes and suspense throughout. I enjoyed how this book built upon the previous one and added to the overall series arc.
Syrus was a healer. He was more of a golden retriever character with a good heart.
Vel was determined character who wanted to prove herself. She had a great inner strength.
The second chance romance was sweet filled with some steamy moments and lots of exciting danger.
If you enjoy tropes like; second chance romance, she saves him, on the run, magic, secrets, lies, thrilling moments, forced proximity, and more then check this book out!
I was given a free copy of this book and I decided to give it an honest review. I loved this latest addition to Ms. Hart's collection. I appreciate that she has a shared universe where she has been putting her latest stories. With each story her world gain more depth and history. I don't have to learn a new world; I can immerse myself instantly into the story and enjoy the new characters that I have waited so long to meet. Ms. Hart's characters are human (even the one who aren't), their very humanity makes them interesting, the twists and turns the story takes and how those characters deal with it, keeps me turning the pages late into the night. Can't wait for the next one.
Veloria and Syrus are great characters. Their forbidden love causes them to be separated, and Veloria continues her studies believing Syrus is away, but instead he's held prisoner, drained of magic, and forced to cooperate to keep Veloria safe. It's tragic but sweet the lengths he will go to to protect her, and when they escape together it's a bittersweet reunion as they must stand against the Towers and expose their deception. The story flows well, has a good second chance romance plot and some steamy scenes. You can treat it as a standalone, but it has links to the previous book and overlaps.
Veloria joins the towers, to escape an arraigned marriage and all the trappings that go with it. As the youngest daughter, she wouldn’t have as much to offer as her sisters. She had no idea she would inconveniently meet the love of her life in her new home! Or that he would betray her trust in a letter saying that he changed his mind about leaving the towers with her, and sailed away to another continent to mine arcainite. Then, one night, she knew something wasn’t right. She went into a forbidden area, down the stairs, to a door… This is a second chance romance that pulls at every emotion. Veloria and Syrus, are hunted and run into more adventure than they expected when the towers come chasing after them. Themes: the chosen one, found family, fantasy romance, magic.
I LOVED this book so much, I could not put it down! This book goes back in time to Syrus and Velorias journey with The Towers. When Syrus doesn’t show up, Veloria decides nothing else will get in her way to becoming an Exemplar to The Towers. That is, until she stumbles upon the Towers biggest secret. Follow Syrus and Veloria in their attempt to dismantle everything the Towers stand for. Monster of the Silver City is a faced paced, dual POV romantasy that will have you reading well into the night!
Meredith Hart did it again 💯 Monster of the Silver City This book was so good ! I love a good "feel good" fall back in love & this had all those vibes but magic and mayhem & of course a morally grey MMC 😉 Veloria is such a strong willed FMC and I absolutely love her as a character & the love story between Syrus & Vel is so well written & so relatable. Also adding that I LOVE the dual POV & desperately need a Zayne story cause he is absolutely delicious & deserves a happy ending
I received an ARC ebook and all opinions are my own
I adored this read, Veloria and Syrus are two characters I didn't know I needed. Veloria is strong, determined, and loyal. Syrus is privileged, arrogant, and an idiot LOL, makes decisions without confiding in Veloria which would have saved a lot of heartbreak, but this is fiction. This series is an interesting perspective, as each of the books follows one of the four Elite brother's journey through the Towers until they meet up for what's to come together, and I can't wait. The writing is easy, quick and pulls you in. Everyone should read this series and I want book 3 NOW LOL.
Loved this story! Meredith Hart has expertly woven a magical, fun, romantic adventure tale - sequel to Monster of the Dagger Mountains. The young couple, Veloria and Syrus, get a second chance at love as well as a chance to right some wrongs for which they are at least partly culpable. MH sucked me into her magical world and I didn’t want to leave! I read an ARC of this story and am happy to offer this honest review.
- second chance - Romantasy - forced proximity - secrets - found family - on the run - banter
I LOVED Monster of the Dagger Mountains and couldn't wait to get Veloria and Syrus' story. And it did not disappoint. I flew through this book because it was so addictive, I could not put it down. It is fast paced and high stakes.
I absolutely loved that we got to see more of the backstory of the Towers. Syrus' story was heartbreaking and for his and Veloria's relationship- it was rough. But I loved their journey back to each other, it wasn't easy or quick but I loved their determination.
I absolutely love this world, the mystery, the love. I can't wait to be back in it for Aveus' story next!
Magic infused silver chains and nightmare steel, danger and romance. Syrus and Veloria are lured to The Towers by promises never fulfilled and end up battling the Exemplars of The Towers and mercenaries for their freedom. The tortures that the author describes I could almost feel. I should note that I received an ARC from the author.
After reading Monster of the Dagger Mountains, I knew I had to have the next in the series.
Monster of the Silver City is technically a second chance trope, but it’s the kind that I can’t ever get annoyed with. Veloria thinks Syrus left and never contacted her again…but sorry babe, he’s been kidnapped and held captive ever since. And once Veloria finds out, she immediately jumps into action to free him. I love that even though she was hurt and believed he abandoned her, she doesn’t hesitate to help him once she realizes the truth. SWOON!
The story has great pacing, and I was caught up in all of the action. I couldn’t stop reading—I had to find out how it ended; would they get back together? Would the bad guys get their comeuppance? And the spice was just right. It fit the story and the characters so well.
I’m in love with this series and I can’t wait for more. The little sneak peek at the end just enticed me even more.
AHHH. I absolutely devoured this book! syrus and Veloria have my whole heart. I was nervous going into this not knowing where their story stood after book 1 but Meredith does an amazing job putting the pieces back together and showing that love literally can conquer all. Im left wondering again what is going to happen NEXT AHHH I can’t wait for more adventures 🖤
Really enjoyed this! This time, we find out the story of Syrus and Veloria. This adult romantasy takes us on an adventure inside the silver city. You can look forward to second chance romance, banter, forced proximity, and found family.
I enjoyed this book so much I wanted to text the author when I was only a third through to tell her how much I loved it but decided to wait and write my review when I finished it. This is a really good book and I highly recommend you read it.
I've read every Meredith Hart book with eager anticipation and I think this is my favorite yet. The characters and action and deep connection with the larger world had me hooked from the start. A perfect escape with hope for good triumphing over evil - just what is needed in these dark times.
I love a fantasy story that can draw me in and this series delivers. I love the characters and how the story grows. I can't wait to see what happens next and how the 4 characters continue on and what they find.
This was an enjoyable reading but not nearly as enjoyable as ‘Monster from the Dagger Mountain’ (I absolutely adored that book!!). Still, enjoyable. Characters were fine, and I enjoy that world. I would read a next book if the author continues as it leads us to believe.
