Sir Arthur Ignatius Conan Doyle was a Scottish writer and physician. He created the character Sherlock Holmes in 1887 for A Study in Scarlet, the first of four novels and fifty-six short stories about Holmes and Dr. Watson. The Sherlock Holmes stories are milestones in the field of crime fiction.

Doyle was a prolific writer. In addition to the Holmes stories, his works include fantasy and science fiction stories about Professor Challenger, and humorous stories about the Napoleonic soldier Brigadier Gerard, as well as plays, romances, poetry, non-fiction, and historical novels. One of Doyle's early short stories, "J. Habakuk Jephson's Statement" (1884), helped to popularise the mystery of the brigantine Mary Celeste, found drifting at sea with no crew member aboard.

This is my first experience with the Sherlock Holmes original stories and I was pleasantly surprised. The story of how Holmes solves these cases is intriguing yet I found myself more interested in the backstories of these criminals that committed the murder.

The backstory of “a study in scarlet” about the wild frontier of the west and the Mormons in Utah was captivating. Same thing with “the valley of fear”. Those were my favorite ones but let’s not forget that the “sign of the four” also had an interesting story to tell.

I wonder why then that “the hounds of the baskervilles” is the only Holmes story I had heard of till this book. Even though all four of these novels were enjoyable that one I would consider to be the least engaging one.

Overall this is a great book to read some of the original novels of Sherlock Holmes all in the same place. Not even mentioning the quality and decor of the book itself. It is an eye-catcher.

Biased- Check my other reviews for Sherlock Holmes books. This version I was very lucky to get from TKMAXX for 7.99 I think? And it is gorgeous. The gold and the black and the red- I've already read all the books but now I own my own version of all of the Sherlock Holmes books.

So when I saw this I said to myself I'm willing to part with 20 for it- and it was for 7.99 so I just grabbed it.
