Hudson Sinclair is such a grumpy, snarly, arrogant nightmare no one on the temp agency's books is willing to take on the job of replacing his secretary while she is off sick.
Well, here I am, it’s my first day at the agency and I should probably give it a pass as my first job too. At least, that would be the prudent thing to do, but ‘prudent’ is not on my list of virtues.
Besides, the money is too alluring to pass up.
You see, I have plans. Big, ambitious plans to set up my own sweet little bakery. A place where I will bake the most delicious cupcakes and queues of hungry customers will wait outside for my delicious concoctions.
To make that wish come true I need money.
Anyway, how bad can the guy be? I'm no pushover. I know I can handle even a boss from the pits of hell for a while if it means getting my precious dream as a reward.
I accept the challenge and take the job.
Whoa! Hang on a minute. Why did nobody warn me that Mr. Grumpy is also Mr. Drop Dead Gorgeous! Day one, and he has a slightly unconventional proposition for me. And he’s willing to pay handsomely if I play along.
Of course, I agree. I have my bakery to think of.
It’s all going swimmingly well until that thing as old as Adam and Eve puts in an appearance. We get naked… and now I can’t even think straight. This job just got a whole lot complicated...
Hard Boss is a full-length, standalone, office romance.

She looks at me, flabbergasted. And disgusted. Yes, there is disgust on her face. Does she think I’ll go seven days without having sex? I can as well drop dead.
“Not with you, of course,” I add, and she relaxes. “Of course. You’re free to do whatever you want.” “I’m not asking permission from you. I’m just informing you.”
This man can't go without screwing ow for 1 week, it's 2025 and my tolerance for manwhores is very low, i know for sure i'll hate reading further so dnf it is🫡
A steamy, grumpy-sunshine office romance with sizzling tension, unexpected twists, and a heroine determined to chase her dreams.

"Hard Boss" introduces us to Juliette, a determined woman working through a temp agency to earn enough money to open her dream bakery. When the agency offers her a temporary secretary position for the notoriously grumpy and snarly Hudson Sinclair – a job everyone else has turned down – Juliette sees it as a lucrative opportunity she can't afford to miss. On her first day, she discovers that Mr. Grumpy is also incredibly gorgeous. Soon after starting, Hudson presents Juliette with an unconventional proposition: pretend to be his fiancée to help close a crucial business deal, with a very handsome daily payout. Juliette, focused on her bakery, agrees. However, as they spend more time together, the line between their fake engagement and real attraction begins to blur, leading to complications neither of them anticipated.
The premise of "Hard Boss" is definitely appealing, hitting several of my favorite romance tropes, including grumpy boss/sunshine heroine and fake fiancé. Juliette's determination to achieve her dream of opening a bakery makes her a relatable and likable character, and her initial interactions with the notoriously difficult Hudson are entertaining as she's not afraid to stand up to him. The offer of a fake engagement for a significant sum of money is a classic setup for a forced proximity romance with plenty of potential for both comedic and steamy moments. The promise of an enemies-to-lovers dynamic also adds to the anticipation of their relationship developing.
The description of Manhattan in the book struck me as potentially unrealistic, which could take away from the immersion for some readers, especially those familiar with the city. I also picked up on mentions of syntax errors and potential writing issues, which could unfortunately hinder the overall reading experience. While the core plot seemed somewhat predictable to me, I could also see how others would enjoy the journey of Juliette and Hudson falling for each other. Interestingly, the business aspects of the story seemed to intrigue some, maybe even more so than the central romance.
If you enjoy office romances with a grumpy boss, a determined heroine, and a fake fiancé trope that leads to real feelings, then "Hard Boss" might be a fun read for you. Be aware that some readers noted potential issues with the setting and writing, but if you're looking for a standalone story with a focus on the developing relationship and a guaranteed HEA, this could be a good choice.
"Hard Boss" offers an engaging office romance with classic tropes that many readers will likely enjoy. While there are some potential drawbacks mentioned in other reviews, the core elements of the enemies-to-lovers and fake fiancé storyline, along with the promise of a happy ending, make it a potentially satisfying read, earning a rating of 3.75 out of 5 stars.
My Rating System:
1⭐️: The book didn’t hold my interest and/or had significant issues that overshadowed any redeeming qualities for me, but generally not my cup of tea. Most likely did not finish the book. 2⭐️: The book didn’t quite resonate with me, and while my experience wasn’t remarkable, I did finish it. It had some redeeming qualities and potential but fell short in execution. Recommendable, though with some reservations. 3⭐️: Good read, but didn’t quite stand out. Still worth recommending to others. 4⭐️: Really enjoyed it and stayed engaged throughout. Would read book again. Definitely recommendable. 5⭐️: Incredible writing that made me deeply connect with the characters. I was completely absorbed in the world and didn’t want it to end. This book stayed with me even when I wasn’t reading it. I'd gladly reread it and highly recommend it to everyone!.

I had a sense of surrealness or unreality reading this book. Most of the action takes place in a Manhattan that is not familiar to me. In fact, it seems mythical. It's a Manhattan that has seafood farms, ranch houses, and large mansions with extensive acreage. The MMC claims he likes to drive himself around Manhattan. No one enjoys driving in Manhattan if they could have a driver. The traffic is deadly.
Juliette wants to open a bakery in her hometown. And is enrolled with a temporary agency that sends out temporary secretaries to executives whose secretaries are not available. Apparently this agency operates like an audition /cattle call or a brothel showroom where all the girls are gathered, rather than modern-day calls or emails to their homes to see if they're available and to book them for for jobs. Oh well…
The characters are really interesting and some of them are very cutthroat, especially Frank Dubois. Frank Dubois is the bad guy who is gunning for Hudson Sinlair's business. He’s an Ayn Randian type character who believes in survival of the fittest, a zero sum operator for whom other businesses have to fail for him to succeed. He prefers hostile takeovers and has done that for decades. It usually takes him not too long to defeat a business owner and take over the business. He's amassed, a great amount of money, and has put the fear of Frank in a lot of business leaders. In some ways he reminds me of the hold that a certain president has on his party. But with Hudson's business it's taken him 2 months so far and he hasn't succeeded in a takeover. He's not averse to underhanded business practices like calling in his flunkies from the SEC to shut down Hudson's businesses. And he's not averse to psychological manipulation either, telling Hudson he'll end up like his alcoholic druggie dad.
Hudson is looking at all strategies to avoid this takeover including marrying the youngest daughter of Frank Dubois. And his ethics are a little shaky in that he does begin to court her and then decides that he just can't marry her because his love her. He's rude, and a hard case to get along with. His PA needs breaks from him and takes them one or two times a month.
So Juliette agrees to take the assignment and he treats her like chattel. But good for her, she stands up to him. She's courageous and assertive woman. She doesn't fold easily. She agrees to be his fake fiancee for the amount of $10,000 a day for 7 days. And this will give her a funding to open a bakery in her hometown.
Frank Dubois and his family have put the dys in dysfunction. And Hudson 's project manager and second in command Allison, is a little shady too, very untrustworthy. But Hudson has a few tricks up his sleeve to deter Frank from taking over his business that he inherited from his father and grew. He's a deal maker and makes alliances but he's not underhanded like Frank Dubois. How he falls in love with Juliette changes his outlook, and how he prevails against Frank Dubois is basically the meat of the story.
There are quite a few mistakes in this book in terms of syntax, and at one point I was wondering if it had been translated from another language or if the author's first language was not English. I hope that these corrections are changed and the book is tightened up. Because it has the capacity to be a good one. The other thing I hope changes is the unrealistic fantastical description of Manhattan. I literally had surreal moments reading this book being a New York City native.

4.5 Stars! Juliette is close to getting her dream. Just needs a bit more cash and she can start opening her Bakery. She takes a job as a temp working for high end clients as it pays more money. When the call comes in that Hudson Sinclair is in need of a temp, everyone in the temp pool says no. Well, it's her first day and she believes she can handle anyone, so she agrees. Little did she know it was to go on a trip to Manhattan. Hudson is trying to save his company and has also got himself into a bind with the daughter of the person who wants to buy his company. He decides to give Juliette a golden opportunity, play his fiancé for the week and he will give her $10,000 a day. Too good to be true, right. She agrees and it is the start of a roller coaster ride that has some good twists and keeps you reading to the last page.

Hard Boss is a contemporary romance that sets perfectionist boss MMC Hudson Sinclair up against his newly hired replacement secretary MFC Juliette that leads into a financial opportunity for her that is a ten thousand a day payout that will be a windfall well on her way to realizing her dream of opening a bakery. All she has to do is pretend to be her bosses fiancé in a bid to land him a billion dollar deal. Seven days of pretending to be in love should be painless for them both as long as they don’t catch feelings for each other, and who falls in love in that short amount of time? Apparently Cupid has other ideas in mind for these two as fake soon becomes all too real for them both in this pleasingly written journey that includes some intrigue, family, drama, spice, twists, and vulnerabilities. Good read that ends on a well earned HEA.

Hard Boss is amazingly written, well balanced and beautifully executed by Iona Rose. Iona Rose continues to prove to me as a reader what a phenomenal author she is with each book I’ve read by her so far. I’m looking forward to reading more amazing romances from Iona Rose in the future. Hard Boss is the story of Juliette and Hudson. I adored learning about who these two characters were as the main characters as well as seeing the feelings they have for each other grow stronger as their story progressed. The chemistry between Hudson and Juliette is absolutely breathtaking and fascinating. The characters are well developed and beautifully executed throughout the story. Hard Boss is certainly an office romance that I would recommend to anyone who enjoys reading these kinds of romances.

Juliette wants to open bakery, needs money to open bakery so the takes the temp job filling in for Hudson Sinclair’s secretary. He is gorgeous, but almost impossible to work for. Grumpy, demanding and arrogant. The book is one that will grab your attention right at the beginning. The characters are amazing and well developed. Hudson faces a takeover of his company from Frank and there is a lot of angst and drama with that. To save his company, he even considers marrying the daughter of his enemy. The enemy to lovers relationship between Juliette and Hudson is steamy. This was a good book with lots of emotion and drama. A happy ending and no cliffhanger. Readable Enemies-to-Lovers romance. New to temping, Juliette faces a serious challenge with arrogant & grumpy boss, Hudson. She is stunned when he offers her a significant financial bonus to pose as his fiancée for a major business deal in order to stave off a hostile take-over of his company. I liked that Juliette is a confident and sassy person – giving as good as she gets standing up for herself against bossy Hudson, with her sights firmly focussed on her dream of opening a bakery. What adds depth to this romantic story is the parallel plot of Hudson’s nemesis and his dysfunctional family crossing swords with the couple at every turn. I loved that Hudson falls hard, unable to help himself. An enjoyable read with several twists and turns and the inevitable HEA.

Wow when these two find themselves agreeing to an unconventional proposition these two produce so much steam. There is such a great under plot, twists and throw in a mistress... wow
Iona Rose takes you on an adventure through the pages of her book. Grumpy boss Hudson Sinclair is a demanding boss, yet Juliette, the new girl at the temp agency, decides to take on the grumpiest boss of all and go to work. This job changed my life.
Hudson and Juliette become more than professional in the book. It gets very steamy, and several other girls get jealous. There are several girls slapping each other, and it gets very tense. But, I don't want to say a lot because it would give the mystery away, so all I will say is that in the end, they live happily ever after.

Juliette Nightingale needs cash to chase her bakery dream, so she takes a job no one else wants. Enter Hudson Sinclair ... intimidating, infuriating, and definitely off-limits. But when a fake engagement becomes part of the deal, resisting him gets a whole lot harder. Hard Boss delivers drama, humor, suspense, and sizzling chemistry in spades. Iona Rose keeps the twists coming, making it impossible not to root for Juliette and Hudson. A steamy, addictive romance that keeps you hooked until the very last page!
Hudson is a billionaire that is trying to save his vompany. Juliette is his temp assistant. On day one he propositions her to be his fake fiance in exchange to for money yo helphim start her own bakery. There are several twist and turns in this story. Hudson will do anything to not loose his company. Juliette is just thinking of her bakery. You'll keep turning the pages to see how Hudson deals with the takeover and how Juliette and he keep their relationship fake. I will say a lot wraps up quickly in the end.
Hudson is the worst mmc. He uses Phillipa, he also has Jasmine ( his rivals mistress) as a fuck buddy, but still wants the main character (Juliette) who he is meant to have a fake relationship with. The main girl knowing that Hudson is involved with all these people decides to have sex with him. It's not an enemies to lovers if she fucks him within days of knowing him, and there is no being enemies. Phillipa is pathetic as well, like girl he doesn't want you.
Hudson and Juliette were fun, snarky and had great chemistry. Hudson was our quintessential grumpy stoic boss that has gone through his share of assistants. When Juliettes friend group need someone to help them out, so they don't get placed in his office she agrees. She needs the money and how bad could he be. Hudson may have met his match with the hard working, driven, not backing down woman as she needs money to start her own bakery and he will not stand in her way with his grumpy hard exterior! ~~Michele McMullen~~
I thought that this was a very enjoyable book. The storyline was fun and had a nice little sprinkling of cuteness that I felt added a delightful shine to it all. Juliette was all sass and spunkiness, and she did need all that initially with Hudson. As for Hudson, I liked his gruffness and found him very swoony. Together, they made an awesome couple that had me basking in The Feels as they stole my heart.
This was a fun and spicy read that kept me wanting to find out what happened next. I love the boss/employee dynamic but often times they are repetitive. It was refreshing to read a new spin on the character dynamic. I absolutely loved the ending and how it played out while still supporting a strong female protagonist.
There were parts to this that I felt needed a little more, either development or explanation, but I did feel a connection to Juliette and Hudson, and I enjoyed seeing their relationship change and deepen, I wanted to know what would happen next and how it would all end for them. I am voluntarily leaving this review after receiving an ARC.
