Alex Mercer never imagined his life would be anything more than real estate listings and date nights with Taylor, the man he fell hopelessly in love with—a journalist with a passion for uncovering the truth. But when Taylor is mysteriously killed while investigating a dangerous cult, Alex’s world shatters. Consumed by grief, Alex discovers something he’s an Essencer, born with the power to control the elements.
Thrown into a hidden world of magic, Alex joins the Elemental Order, determined to uncover the truth behind Taylor’s death. As he trains and struggles to master his newfound abilities, he learns that Taylor was closer to exposing a dark, ancient conspiracy than anyone knew. The Shadowed Hand, a sinister group, is amassing power, and Alex is now their next target.
As Alex digs deeper into Taylor’s final investigation, he must navigate this magical underground, confronting dangerous enemies, powerful allies, and the weight of a love lost. Can Alex harness the magic inside him before the Shadowed Hand’s plans unravel reality itself? A heart-pounding journey of love, loss, and the power that lies within.
The author has a clear talent for setting a scene, his descriptive style made it easy to visualize the story like a movie playing out in my mind. I especially enjoyed the character of Maya and the family dynamics, which brought warmth and depth to the story and were some of my favorite parts.
As a mood reader, I did find the pacing a bit challenging. The first half of the book leans heavily into romance and backstory, which made it feel more like two separate books, one romantic, one fantastical, rather than a seamless romantasy. I had gone in expecting a fantasy-driven plot and spent nearly 250 pages in what felt like a contemporary romance arc. That shift in expectation made it a bit hard for me to stay fully immersed.
Structurally, I think the story could benefit from a more condensed first act, perhaps focusing on the relationship setup, proposal, and loss within a few chapters, then weaving in flashbacks throughout the fantasy arc to maintain that emotional thread while keeping the plot moving. This would help blend the genres more cohesively and maintain momentum for readers who come in expecting magic from the start.
That said, the foundation is strong. The author clearly poured heart into these characters and this world, and there are some lovely moments that really shine, I especially liked the proposal scene and the way he describes magic and how to use it. With a bit of tightening, I think this story could absolutely go far in the book world, and I’m excited to see where the author goes next with his writing!

Love, magic, death but wait he lives? Kept me on the edge of my seat the whole time in part two. Part one built up the love and set the experience for part two.
