Aristoteles (MÖ 484-322) yirmi yıl boyunca Platon'un Akademisi'nde öğrenci, filozof, yazar olarak çalışmıştır. Platon'un ölümünden sonra Anadolu'daki Assos'ta Kral Hermias'ın sarayındaki felsefeciler grubuna katılmış ve kralın yeğeniyle evlenmiştir. Lesbos Adası'nda biyoloji alanında araştırmalar yaptıktan sonra 343-42'de Makedonyalı Philip tarafından veliaht İskender'e ders vermek üzere saraya çağrılmıştır. 336'da İskender'in kral olmasından bir yıl sonra Aristoteles Atina'ya dönerek bir felsefe okulu kurmuştur. Önde gelen düşünürlerle birlikte felsefe ve bilim araştırmaları yapmıştır. 323'te Büyük İskender'in ölümünün ardından ölüm tehditlerinden çekinerek Atina'yı terk etmiş ve 322'de ölmüştür. Aristoteles antik dönemin en güçlü felsefe sistemini yaratmıştır.

Sir William David Ross hayatını Aristoteles ve ahlak felsefesine adamıştır. Aristoteles'in bütün eserlerinin ingilizceye çevrilmesi projesine şef editör olarak çalışmış, Metafizik ve Nikomakhos'a Etik'i kendisi çevirmiştir. Ross, Aristoteles'in felsefe sistemini temel bileşenlerine ayırarak incelemiş ve günümüz felsefesi açısından neden vazgeçilmez olduğunu göstermiştir. Aristoteles alanında klasikleşmiş bir çalışmadır.

Sir William David Ross KBE, frequently published as W.D. Ross, was a philosopher, principally of ethics. He was White's Professor of Moral Philosophy (1923–1928), Provost of Oriel College, Oxford (1929–1947), Vice-Chancellor of the University of Oxford (1941–1944) and Pro-Vice-Chancellor (1944–1947). He was president of the Aristotelian Society (1939–1940), and was elected a Fellow of the British Academy and was its President (1940-1944).

از بهترین کتاب‌های خواندم همین است. بعید می‌دانم در اثر دیگری چنین گزارشِ جامعی از تمامِ آثار و آرای ارسطو یافت شود. وسعتِ موضوعاتِ موردِ تحقیقِ ارسطو شگفت‌انگیز است. این اثر بسیار فشرده است. هر جمله حجم زیادی از مطلب و معنی را در خود دارد. احتمالاً خوانشِ این اثر، یا دستِ کم بخش‌هایی از آن، برای خواننده‌ی غریبه با ارسطو و فلسفه چندان آسان نیست.

ترجمه‌ی مهدی قوام صفری دقیق و حرفه‌ای است. متن اصلی سبکی رسمی و جملاتی طولانی و تو در تو دارد. متن فارسی و انگلیسی را با هم خواندم و جز چند ایراد سهوی و بسیار جزئی مشکلی در ترجمه نیافتم.

A great introduction to Aristotle, and summary of his mind-boggling expanse of work. Ross provides a good balance of context, exposition, and analysis. Aristotle is truly the giant upon whose shoulders we all stand.

Etica Eudemică este o operă care în ultimele decenii a beneficiat de atenţia savanţilor şi a filozofilor. Capitolul al VII-lea din monografia lui Ross este o expunere a Eticii Nicomahice (şi la aceasta se referă el cînd vorbeşte despre "Etică"). Dar, după cum explică în primul capitol, există o versiune alternativă a lecţiilor lui Aristotel despre etică, anume cea Eudemică. Ea a fost întotdeauna umbrită de versiunea Nicomahică, avînd un corp de text sărac, suferind de absenţa unui comentariu serios. Recent a fost publicat un excelent text nou, mai accesibil - o traducere atentă cu comentariu filozofic şi o monografie ce foloseşte analiza statistică (alături de alte forme de argumentare) pentru a fi o provocare la adresa punctelor de vedere tradiţionale asupra valorii Eticii Eudemice şi asupra relaţiei acesteia cu mai bine cunoscuta Etică. Aceste apariţii editoriale formează un promontoriu pentru exegezele viitoare asupra Eticii Eudemice, care va influenţa în schimb concepţia noastră despre etica lui Aristotel în general. Analiza statistică asistată de calculator a textelor a devenit mai uşoară şi mai la îndemînă. Avînd opera lui Aristotel pe dischetă, studentul nu mai trebuie să se bazeze pe propriile sale resurse cînd doreşte să ştie un cuvînt ori o expresie sau unde pot fi găsite pasaje asemănătoare. Calculatorul face imediat pentru el ceea ce Ross făcea din memorie - deşi calculatorul nu va face pentru el ceea ce Ross putea să realizeze în virtutea gîndirii sale profunde şi a perspicacităţii sale filozofice.

Ahmet Arslan’ın İlkçağ Felsefe Tarihi dizisinin Aristoteles’e ayrılmış üçüncü cildiyle birlikte okudum bu kitabı. Yoğun bir anlatımı var. Bazen anlamakta güçlük çektiğim hususlar oldu fakat diğer kitap ile üstesinden gelebildim. Ross gerçekten çok başarılı bir kaynak ortaya koymuş.
