Memento Mori #4

Emperor of Havoc

Rate this book
He’s a dark storm wrapped in tattoos and muscle.
A mafia prince with a killer’s smile and a predator’s gaze.
Takeshi Mori doesn’t ask for anything. He takes it.
Including me.
Our marriage is a weapon forged in blood, meant to stop a war.
But there’s nothing peaceful about my new husband.
He’s ruthless chaos incarnate—a Machiavellian psychopath with a thirst for violence.
He craves control, but I was born to defy.
His darkness terrifies me even as it calls to mine.
His touch consumes me even as it burns me alive.
We aren’t a happy ever after. We’re a collision-course disaster.
And “till death do us part” isn’t a vow.
It’s a declaration of war.

Emperor of Havoc is a standalone dark mafia romance with a smart, untamable heroine, and an ultra possessive psycho hero with "look at her and I'll unalive you" energy. Readers are STRONGLY advised to read the TW inside. No cliffhanger; HEA included.

A reader first and foremost, Jagger Cole cut his romance writing teeth penning various fan-fiction stories years ago. After deciding to hang up his writing boots, Jagger worked in advertising pretending to be Don Draper. It worked enough to convince a woman way out of his league to marry him, though, which is a total win.

Now, Dad to two little princesses and King to a Queen, Jagger is thrilled to be back at the keyboard.

When not writing or reading romance books, he can be found woodworking, enjoying good whiskey, and grilling outside—rain or shine.

Okay, so this book is WILD. Like feral mafia prince marries untamable badass heroine wild. And I was READY for all the chaos Takeshi Mori was about to unleash. But… one scene really, really disturbed me (more on that later), so even though this had potential, I had to knock it down a whole star. Sorry, not sorry.

First off, Takeshi. HE IS UNHINGED. 🔥💀 He’s got big “touch her and die” energy with a side of I’ll burn the world down for you. But also… 🚩🚩. The sugar pill scene? Absolutely not.

Let’s talk about that scene real quick: Takeshi admits to tampering with Kat’s birth control pills. Like, casually admits it with a smirk, no remorse, nothing. Excuse me, SIR?! That’s manipulative, creepy, and just… gross. I was so mad I had to put the book down and pace. This isn’t just dark—it’s crossing a line that made me super uncomfortable.

Kat, on the other hand, is a queen. 👑 She’s sharp, fierce, and takes no BS from Takeshi, which I LOVED. Her strength and intelligence shone through, and she held her own even when he was being his psychotic self.

Now, the romance: it’s dark, it’s messy, and it’s SPICY. 🌶️ But… I didn’t really feel the chemistry between them. Like, one second they’re enemies, and the next they’re all “you’re mine forever” without enough buildup. I wanted more tension, more dialogue, more feeling.

The pacing was also a bit off. The beginning was 🔥, but then it slowed WAY down, and I found myself skimming some parts. And let’s be real, Takeshi deserved more alpha, feral moments! He felt kinda watered down compared to the other books in the series.

What I loved:

✧ Kat being a total badass 💅

✧ The suspense and action-packed last 30% (Cole KNOWS how to keep you on edge).

✧ The dark, angsty vibes of the story.

What didn’t work for me:

✧ The sugar pill tampering scene (I can’t get over it, sorry).

✧ The lack of chemistry between the leads.

✧ Not enough appearances from the rest of the Mori crew! I missed the chaos they bring.

Final Thoughts: If you love touch her and die heroes, dark mafia drama, and intense action, this might be your vibe. But that sugar pill scene? Hard pass from me. Overall, I’d give it 3.75 stars, but because of that scene, I’m dropping it to 2.75.

Read with caution, y’all. And check the TWs before diving in! 🖤

It was good, but not that good there was potential here that went wasted. The story and plot were solid, and I liked both the main and side characters, but that wasn’t enough for me.

Takeshi, as expected, was unhinged, psychotic mess we've come to know from the previous books, and I’m all for it. Katarina, on the other hand, was a refreshing surprise. We didn’t know much about her before, other than that she’s mute, but in this book, she’s strong, calculated, and unafraid of anyone. Plus, she’s about to take over her father’s empire. Love a woman in power, right?

Takashi’s plan to marry Katarina and get close to her father to avenge his friend’s death is solid enough on paper, but the execution starts to fall apart. Katarina, who we’re led to believe is this strong, calculating, and intelligent woman, ends up making a string of seriously questionable decisions that completely threw me off.
For instance, she overhears a conversation where nothing new or unexpected is revealed, and instead of taking action or confronting the situation head on, she does the most ridiculous thing possible she runs away. From her own house. I mean, what? You’re supposed to be this fierce, powerful woman, and your reaction to a tense moment is just to flee? It felt completely out of character.
And then, when things get really bad, she didn’t speak to warn Takashi until after he's already been shot. She speaks up then? Like… what?

Honestly, I preferred their dynamic as enemies. The transition to lovers was too sudden and felt forced. One chapter, they’re literally at each other’s throats, and the next, they’re declaring, “You’re mine, no one else” with zero build up. There wasn’t any real emotional development between them, and it left me feeling like their relationship wasn’t earned.

Emperor of Havoc by Jagger Cole

4/5 stars

The Memento Mori series is just so bloody addictive. Emperor of Havoc did not disappoint! It's a stunningly hot conclusion to this amazing series.

In this book we follow Katarina and Takeshi. It starts with Kat being at Venom (an exclusive night club) waiting on her 'date' to act out her dark and hidden desires. Tension is building but then she suddenly has to leave. She gets information to infiltrate the Mori compound, their mafia enemy. But what she didn't expect is for her 'date' to be there and he is nowhere done with fulfilling both their hidden desires. He chases her and is about to devour her until Mal interrupts them and things end prematurely.

Back at home her father wants to marry her off to Rodion. The son of another bratva mafia boss. But Rodion is a severe drunk and a horrible human being. Takeshi Mori barges in and takes Rodion place as her future husband. And that is what kick starts this addictive story.

Compared to the other books this one is a bit of a slow burn. Yes there are some hot scenes in the beginning, but it takes awhile before things truly heat up. And once they do, fire ignites and they burn each other bare so there isn't any room for secrets anymore. And that brings certain truths to the forefront that must be dealt with.

I really enjoyed and loved this fourth book. But I must confess it is slightly less addictive than the first three books. The pacing was a little too slow for me. I expected way more alpha male behaviour from Takeshi. He really took his time and in some part that slowness didn't really suit him. He is set up a bit differently in the first three books.
The love scenes were also written more demurely it seemed. Don't get me wrong. It's still flaming hot. But I had the feeling this book was written in a bit of a rush. And that extra bit that the first three books have, wasn't in this one. And that disappointed me a little bit.

But overall still an amazing book and a fantastic series! 4 huge stars for this gorgeous story. ♥

Jagger Cole is definitely one of my favorite dark romance authors! And I'll read anything he writes in the future.

This was my 2nd time reading this author's book. And just like the previous one i read (emperor of wrath), it was okayyy.

I came across this one while searching for Arrange marriage trope novels (like always) and guess what fmc also has a tiger pet!! *immediate YES*

Unpopular opinion: I like virgin romance books.

Me literally searching for them

But also me whenever mmc says things like that

“Tell me, princess,” I purr, my voice dropping to a growl, “will it be a white wedding? Will we be staining the sheets with virgin blood when we consummate our marriage?”

Like - um - NO

Also that plot twist, i didn't really like that personally 😭. The author did the villain so bad. The villain became bad too ofc but i felt more bad for him lol, idk what I'm speaking 😔.

But loved how the ending was sooper dooper happy <3

Artık her kitabı birbirine benziyor. Azıcık da tıkanma yaşasan mı be abim. 🧐

Lets see..🤨

Her zaman söylerim, kitaplar kendi içinde tutarlıysa her şeye varım. 😓

Duygu Dizilimim: 🤨😟😒⛅️🥵😤

Have you ever seen a demure, poised and constricted heroine, who feels some unexplainable darkness inside that somehow always manifests through dark, brutal kinks?

Yes, you have. In every single book written by Jagger Cole.

It’s giving lazy, repetitive writing at this point. Women are not some cookie-cutter-one-size-fits-all-copy-and-paste creatures. We’re complex beings, dare I say: humans. Try f*cking harder.

I can usually overlook the fact that character arc is not Cole’s strong suit, the action is.
Except this time that wasn’t the case.

There was almost nothing happening for the longest time, besides the same old smut that Jagger Cole is known for (his characters could honestly start swapping partners. They all f*ck the same way) and I think there was even more of it than usual.
Even when there finally was some plot to it, it wasn’t particularly consistent - those few action scenes were mostly not related to each other and every one of them made those characters look like idiots.

They were supposed to be some of the most powerful mafia bosses in the world, yet they were shockingly clueless and unprepared ALL. THE. TIME.

I was really excited about this book, having read previous books in the series and it ended up being a big disappointment.

There was something that I did not like. Whether it was the writing style, the MCs or the plot. Enough to say, I skimmed quite a bit to get to the end.

Another brave and though Jagger Cole character. I like the fact she stood her ground against Takeshi and was intelligent as well.

He is a master kind and knows how to manipulate. He is big, broody and dangerous with a psychotic touch.

✥ 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒃𝒐𝒐𝒌
To be honest this was not as good as the previous books in the series. It was entertaining, yes. But not as nerve wrecking and fast paced as other books by the author. Still I enjoyed it and had a fun time while reading. The plot is interesting and the over 400 pages flew by quickly.
Katarina and Takeshi are a good match. Both are fierce and intelligent mafia leaders with a passion for manipulation. I liked that we saw the strong side of Kat and that she was an equal partner for Takeshi. The „fall in love“ part sadly was not that well written cause they go from „we hate each other guts“ to „gosh I love her/him so much“ within pages. The tension between them could have been better and I wish we got more dialogue.
Overall a good and entertaining book.

I knew I was ready for Takeshi’s and Kat’s book the second I read Hana and Damian’s!! Takeshi is balls to the wall possessive and crazy and Kat is just as fierce and a bad bitch! Their chemistry was so hot and wild and I loved that they threw everything at each other and came out more in love. The plot was insane and the growth of both Tak and Kat was delicious to read

Jagger Cole can’t write a bad book, I swear.

Put deranged and determined together and you get our MMC, Takeshi.

Put brave and badass together and you get our FMC, Kat.

& they’ve met their match in each other.

Tak may be out for a little revenge and Kat is determined to keep her family business closed off.

There is tons of tension and banter. Some of her retorts had me 💀.

Caution, possibly unhinged could be deadly shenanigans at play between husband and wife.

Also someone tell me why a Jagger Cole isn’t also marketed as like dark mafia romantic suspense bc I feel like there are so many THRILLER elements within the story/background that could easily make it that.

This series has also been HELLA action packed — Which has just made it so much fucking fun to read.

WHAT YOU GET in Emperor of Havoc :

- Forced Marriage
- Grumpy x grumpy
- Enemies to lovers
- Nonverbal heroine
- Psycho meets his match
- Man obsessed
- Female led mafia
- Steamy app
- Masked Man
- Love bites
- Hand necklaces
- Good girl
- Unhinged MMC
- Brat
- Pierced MMC
- Good Girl
- 🍑👋🏼
- BC Tampering
- Primal
- Somno

Super recomendado si os gustan libros bien oscuros.

Overall Opinion :
I have been waiting for Takeshi for a long time! His type of heroes are my fav ad I knew it would be good to see him in all his unhinged glory lmao. After the end of the last book when I got to know that Katrina will be with Takeshi , it was a nice surprise because I liked the way she handled things and seemed like she would be a great match for him.

Apart from the storyline , which was great and the fact that I completed this in a single sitting , the other thing I loved about this book was the fact that the extra characters specially on katarina’s side were amazing af. I loved Takeshi’s family already but it was a nice change to see a h with such supportive parents , otherwise most of them are depicted in a negative light. I loved the dynamic between them all and this just might be one of my top reads by this author.

Lately it seems that Jagger is just recycling the same dark romance content again and again and I have been craving something new from him , like a series perhaps with some amazing twists am tired of reading the same standalones with the same skeleton storyline. I know this author can give us something great in a series so I hope that happens soon!

That being said , I will completely recommend this one to all the dark romance loving people out there!

Enjoyment:⭐⭐⭐.5
Writing:⭐⭐.5
Characters:⭐⭐⭐.5
Plot:⭐⭐⭐.5
Romance:⭐⭐⭐

I liked this more than I thought I would. The plot was more interesting in this one compared to the previous books in the series, even though it was easy to predict what was going to happen.

The romance wasn't the best. We regressed back to a story that feels like it has missing chapters. The flip between "we are enemies that are attracted to each other" to "we are comfortable and have feelings for each other" happened abruptly, from one chapter to another.

The perpetual problem with how the author describes male genitalia is having a comeback in this book, but to be fair, it is not as prevalent as in the first two books.

The last book in the Momento Mori series by Jagger Cole did not disappoint! While this book did follow a similar storyline from a previous book in this series, it was still a captivating read with twists, turns and erotic moments between Tak and Kat.

This book follows wild card, Takeshi who is the twin brother of Hana (FMC of book 3) and Katarina who is the woman caught in precarious position (with Hana) at the end of book 3. Takeshi has a motive for proposing marriage to Kat, and as this story unwinds, he finds more that he bargained for!

This is the fourth complete Jagger Cole series I have read, you could say I’m a huge fan. In saying that, in my opinion, this book didn’t meet my (maybe too high?) expectations. I did enjoy the story, don’t get me wrong, but I do feel like the plots are all merging into one, they are all pretty similar. I did really enjoy the characters though. I loved Katarina; she was strong, witty, HAD A PET TIGER 🐯 and wasn’t afraid to stand up to Tak. I also loved her best friend / advisor, Nina. She was so special to Kat and I loved that she had that support. He was what I expected; wild, outlandish and dead set on his plans. I did enjoy the few soft moments between them, I wished there was more, but seeing them come together was really lovely. Finally seeing their walls come down was so good, and that epilogue —- yeah that was pretty darn special.

I do very much so recommend Jagger Cole’s writing, and this series. I’m excited to see what he does next!

Thank you to Valentine PR for the arc!!

Jagger Cole always delivers on a dark and spicy mafia romance with so many twists and turns. I love all the mafia politics and how this series has followed the Yakuza mafia. I have loved every book in this series, and this one hooked me from the start. I couldn’t put it down all day.

Katarina was introduced, and I was very intrigued by her character. She is the daughter of the Ishida-Kai leader and has been mute since she experienced a tragic kidnapping. She is next in line, but she will still need a husband. Takeshi kills one of her father’s enemies and asks to be her future husband so it can bring peace between the Mori-Kai and Ishida-Kai. He actually has his own reasons for the arranged marriage because he wants revenge against her father.

Takeshi also knows Katarina from her interest in the kink matching app. She has interests in primal play and CNC, but she is still a virgin. Now, Takeshi will be her husband, and he wants to fulfill her darker fantasies. The chemistry was insane and there were some amazing primal scenes! Jagger Cole always brings the heat, but I also feel their emotional connection.

This book had so many twists and turns, and I was shocked by the reveal at the end. The end was super suspenseful and kept me on the edge of my seat. I loved Takeshi & Katarina and would highly recommend it!!!

I freaking love jagger Cole books, his mafia books are so good so when I saw that I got the arc for this book I screamed

Kat and Takeshi relationship delivered! It was everything, the plot, smut, and angst between them was top tier stuff I couldn’t put it down and the plot twist towards the end!? Definitely didn’t see that coming

Their relationship was filled with revenge, dislike but also love at the end of the day the way Takeshi finally meet his match and it was amusing I just love them

Katarina is a nonverbal female-led mafia (literally my wife) I just love her so much, she’s so badass

Takeshi is (my) psychopath book boyfriend he would do anything for his wife!

They may have started off by hating each other but it all worked out cause they do not play about each other and I’m so happy they got their happy ending!

this book was INSANE.
not like hahaha it was silly like it was crazy!!

this was really pushing the boundaries because what the hell was this main character on. i haven't read a book from this series in a while, and i finally got around to finishing it and my jaw is on the floor.

this book really reminded me of god of ruin, like the whole "blah blah blah im so deeply traumatized and can't speak" and the totally psycho weirdo mmc learned sign language for her. also the whole

I think it’s giving 3.5 ☆ energy???

I received an eARC from Valentine PR and Jagger Cole to review.

Takeshi was just a feral and psychotic as I hoped. Also him on a bike? HAWT. Katerina was such a feisty and badass match for him. We love a woman in power, especially when she’s calculating and not afraid to get her hands dirty, but still empathetic and soft with her loved ones. These two are crazy and made for each other lol. They have darkness in their hearts & it’s so hot when they let it loose on each other 😏🤭 the text banter in the beginning especially had me bluuushing.

As I’ve come to expect with Jagger Cole, the last 30% of this book was off the walls and action packed. Just when I think I know what’s going to happen, he laughs in my face. I really love the suspense and guessing aspect to their books.

I did miss the rest of the Mori-kai family in this one, because they played such a secondary role in comparison to other books, but every cameo we got was lovely.

mini blurb — ✍🏻
Takeshi is a mastermind of plotting and scheming, and he uses his qualities to help his family in the war of power against the Ishida-kai. When he learns that the heir of Kolya Ishida is a woman and she has to marry in order to take control of her father's empire, he makes himself known and give no alternatives. The plan is to marry her to gain access to the Ishida-kai.

//

I haven't particularly loved this series, aside from Emperor of Lust, I feel like the characters are all the same with the same basic personality, at least Damian was a little more unhinged (the expectations were backed with facts), so yeah, very mild and felt like nothing that mattered really was happening.

Katarina is set to take the throne of her father's empire, but a woman in power is not really seen with respect in this world so ofc she has to marry, the options are not very good and here comes Takeshi to save the day.
His ulterior motives to be a part of the Ishika-kai were interesting, the whole mystery with Akira caught my attention.
In true Jagger Cole's style we've got this sort of double tension moment, the first was a little "meh" mild and expected, the second let me tell you was fucked up lol, I wanted to know more about Kolya's wife.

One thing really bugged me from the beginning:
“Tell me to stop and I will. Say the word and I’ll vanish back into the shadows.”
The challenge in his voice burns through me. He’s daring me to reclaim the control he’s stolen with his presence. But my lips won’t form the words.
They fucking can’t.
He was walking a fine line of ✨consent✨ and I'm still unsure if he crossed it or not.

This tho, it was my fave part, Ryu supremacy 👑 that man was the green flag of the book 💚💚💚
He doesn’t even blink. He doesn’t draw his katana, or hit me, or say a word. But finally he clears his throat and leans into me.
“If you think you’re the first little maggot to try and get under my skin, you are sorely mistaken, gaijin. Unlike you, I’m not at the mercy of my emotions like a child. I don’t take orders from anyone except Katarina—a woman, I might add, who I consider my own blood.”
I sigh. “Ryu—”
“No, gaijin. You aren’t going to provoke me, no matter how disgusting you are. But if she asks it of me?” His smile widens. “I will not hesitate for a second to separate your foul-mouthed head from your body.”

Ryu has always been my fiercest ally. But with Papa in and out of the hospital more and more these days, and me basically sitting on the throne, he’s become my superhero. And though I’d never admit it out loud, his steadying presence has become a real source of strength for me.

Review:
This is the fourth and the last book in the 'Memento Mori' series and it can be read as a standalone too.

Where do I start..?? Tbh, after I binge read the the first three books at the end of last year, I fell into a reading slump. I wanted to know what happens to Takeshi & Katarina, who are the MCs of the fourth book. Luckily, I got to know about the ARC applications and applied for it.

Takeshi wanted to exact revenge on Katarina's father because he thought that her father killed his mentor. But his plans went awry as he didn't expect to fall for her.

I loved Takeshi & Katarina. Takeshi could unal!ve someone for her even before he fell in love or understood his feelings. As the trope suggests, psychopath meets his match, Katarina is also such a strong force as she led her criminal organisation after her father fell sick, even though she couldn't talk because of her past trauma.

Their chemistry was so intense but at times made me giggle too. I loved the sweet & the spicy moments 🤭

I love how the author executes the story. The sub plot is great because it connects to the main plot and we get the climactic ending.

Overall, this is a great book and a great end to this series. 🤩

(Can't wait to read the extra epilogue)

(I'm sorry Ryu because I thought you were the person behind the 'notes' 😅 - Ryu is the second in command to the Ishida Empire (Katarina's Criminal Empire))

Thank you Jagger Cole and Valentine PR for providing me with the ARC.

If I had a dollar for every selective mute mafia book I’ve read … I would have like six dollars. And that’s at the very least five too many.

i love a good jagger cole dark romance, they just hit the right spot for me 🤌🏻 i really enjoyed katarina and takeshi’s story and how it interconnected with the other couples stories from earlier in the series. i think my only complaint is that their relationship went a little too quick from enemies to lovers in my opinion, i think i wanted more of a buildup in their relationship and it felt too insta-love for me personally🤷🏻‍♀️ i did love takeshi’s dirty mouth 🥵and honestly their chemistry was 🔥🔥. plot was a bit predictable but can’t complain bc the spice was 🤌🏻

“she’s not part of my plan anymore. she is my plan.”
