Robert Thorogood is an English screenwriter. He is best known as the creator of the BBC 1 Murder Mystery Series, Death in Paradise.

Robert was educated at Uppingham School in Rutland and read History at Downing College, Cambridge. While at Cambridge, he toured with the university's student comedy troupe Footlights in 1993 and was elected President in 1994. Soon after leaving Cambridge, Robert set up a theatre company that toured small theatres and schools, the highlight of which was a production of Molière's The Miser that he directed and acted in alongside Robert Webb, David Mitchell and Olivia Colman.

Robert wrote for many years - selling scripts to the BBC, ITV and independent film companies - but before 2011 the only script of his that was actually broadcast was a Radio 4 afternoon play called From Abstraction about the life of Paul Wolfskehl.

In 2008, Robert entered the inaugural Red Planet Prize and was a chosen finalist, where he was able to pitch his 'Copper in the Caribbean' idea to Tony Jordan. By 2011, when the show was finally broadcast - making it Robert's first TV broadcast credit at the age of 39 - Robert had become something of a poster boy for 'never giving up on the dream'.

In January 2014, it was announced that Robert had signed a deal with MIRA Harlequin to write three Richard Poole Murder Mystery novels, with the first being published in hardback in January 2015.

When Gary Best, local footballing legend, is found dead the Marlow Murder Club want to be on the case but before they can get to the bottom of this death, another local celebrity is killed. The gang should be on the case but with their police contact, Tanika, suspended from duty and Judith hiding some dark secret, will they get to the truth before another famous Marlow resident is targeted?

This is the first of the series that I've read and while I found the plot and relationships easy to follow, it didn't particularly resonate with me. The plot felt quite forced at times and a lot of the dialogue was extremely clunky.

I'd watched a couple of the adaptations and enjoyed the cosy feel but the book simply wasn't for me. I didn't particularly warm to any of the characters - they all felt like caricatures. Its a shame, because the adaptation was really quite enjoyable.

However, since I'm coming at this without having read previous books I think it's only fair to try an earlier book in the series to get more perspective.

The Mysterious Affair of Judith Potts is certainly a cosy crime novel and I should imagine that if you are a fan, then you will enjoy this latest episode. I'll go and try a few of the previous novels.

Thankyou to Netgalley and HQ for the advance review copy.

It was lovely returning to these feisty women. Their relationship with each other is so entertaining and the way they solve murders and work with the police is funny at times. They get their man eventually but, I love the way they manipulate people to get information. My thanks to netgalley and the publishers for giving me the opportunity to read this book in return for an honest review.

'The Mysterious Affair of Judith Potts' is another great addition to the Marlow Murder Club series (and potentially the series closer). As always with this series it has a clever mystery, humour, emotion and our ever present loveable core cast of characters. I really enjoyed central mystery in this one but there was also added intrigue with us finally being promised the backstory about Judith and what happened to her husband all those years ago.

As always there are plenty of twists and red herrings and a reveal that I genuinely didn't see coming. I'm glad we've also had a resolution to the story around Judith's past that has been hinted at in all the previous books and if this is the series closer it gives us a great sense of finality in that respect. The friendships at the heart of this book add warmth and heart and whilst Judith's side quest took away from that a little we were well rewarded in the end and it was great to see Becks and Suzie get more time to shine.

While it took a little time to fully settle into the rhythm of the story, once it did it was hugely enjoyable and yet again gave me a fun and satisfying read that delivers exactly what I look for in this series. If this is the end I'll be sad to say goodbye but from start to finish this series has been an absolute delight.

Thank you to NetGalley and HQ for inviting me to review a digital review copy of "The Mysterious Affair of Judith Potts" in exchange for my honest and voluntary review.

I love this series it’s like meeting up with friends everytime I open the book.
This was full of suspense waiting to find out what was happening with Judith’s mysterious visitor accusing her of murder.
I love these characters, the writing brings them alive and a realism to their lives.
A twisty tale for our intrepid ladies to solve another great instalment from Robert Thorogood I can’t wait to see what happens next.

Full review on my blog: https://www.pagetostagereviews.com/20...

The last Marlow Murder Club book ended on the cliffhanger of all cliffhangers, and we dive straight back into the action in The Mysterious Affair of Judith Potts. Our puzzle-whizz protagonist Judith is the key suspect in a murder this time around, bringing the action much closer to home than the characters are comfortable with.

And, despite this new development understandably taking up a lot of Judith's time in this book, there's also a brand-new case to solve alongside it as another prominent Marlow resident bites the dust. However, her friends Becks and Suzie have to do more of the heavy lifting this time around as their inside woman in the police, Tameka, is also out of action. This change in direction gives Judith's friends more agency and depth, shaping them as individuals instead of as an extension of Judith.

While Judith will forever remain my favourite of the friendship group, it's great to see Becks and Suzie's personalities shine through as they take over the sleuthing reigns. Becks in particular is a force to be reckoned with and I'm glad she's finally breaking free from her label as "the vicar's wife" as she is a kick-ass investigator in her own right with great ideas and unafraid to put them into action. After four books (and two series on TV) this development was much-needed and so appreciated! I also absolutely adored that they've been pulled brought into Judith's puzzling world and I'm excited about future puzzles and wordplays in the books already.

The Mysterious Affair of Judith Potts will immensely satisfy fans of the Marlow Murder Club series as, aside from centring on another strong, local whodunnit story, it really moves our characters forward. We get to learn so much more about Judith's past (the good and the bad) alongside seeing Becks and Suzie shine. The only main character that was sidelined more in this book was Tameka, but it served the plot and I have a feeling we'll get to see a lot more of her again in the next book.

One of the things I love so much about Robert Thorogood's writing is that it's both gripping and fast-paced; he doesn't waffle on with unnecessary plot points or background information but gets straight to the point (save the occasional red herring, of course, to keep everyone on their toes). This is the perfect formula for readers to don their own investigative hats as they follow along on the adventures with Becks, Suzie, and Judith. And makes the inevitable conclusion – whatever it may be – immensely satisfying as you feel a part of the action. It's a very clever strategy and one that has me hooked on the Marlow Murder Club for however long Thorogood will release new stories!

My favourite cosy crime series is back with its fifth entry! Anyone who has been following the series will know there’s been an ongoing background storyline surrounding the ambiguity of the fate of Judith’s late husband. The previous book, Murder on the Marlow Belle, concluded with Judith receiving a visitor who would raise more questions about this…

The Mysterious Affair of Judith Potts takes place a day after the events of Murder on the Marlow Belle. As well as the visitor at Judith’s door, our unlikely trio, consisting of the puzzle setter and her dog walker and vicar’s wife friends, have more murders to solve!

The celebrities of Marlow are dropping like flies, so it’s down to Judith, Suzie and Becks to investigate and expose who’s behind the deaths. With ringleader Judith preoccupied with her personal predicament, it’s great to see Suzie and Becks take charge and come into their own with all the sleuthing skills they have learnt over the years. I love how their friendship is written.

As mentioned, this is part of a series and due to the particular storyline and the way it follows on timeline-wise from the last book, I really do think it’s worth investing the time to get up to speed. It’s cosy in the sense of the characters and the fact that the murders are not dark, but the series isn’t twee. The puzzles and mysteries are fun and well written. Plus if you’re a fan of the TV series Death in Paradise then you will be pleased to know it’s the same writer!

Thank you to Rachel Quin and HQ Stories for the proof.

Another successful book in the cozy crime series featuring the Marlow Detective Agency. I very much enjoyed this outing for the ladies, which sees them acting mainly without their police force friend Tamika, who has been suspended and replaced by another officer.

The replacement, Brendan, very much disapproves of the ladies being involved in police business and when two deaths occur of famous Marlow residents he warns them to stay away. In addition to this storyline, a woman appears from Judith’s past to uncover some secrets that have previously been hinted at involving the death of her husband many years ago.

The storyline is fun, witty, full of crossword puzzle elements and features some characters who have become like friends. I particularly enjoyed this book and the view into Judith’s history which gives her character more depth and understanding.

I would highly recommend reading this book and the others in the series for a great cozy crime thriller.

Thanks to Netgalley, the author and the publisher for the opportunity to read this book in exchange for an honest review.

This book, as always in this series, did what it says on the tin. A little intrigue in a bucolic setting, female friendships, a rogues gallery of characters, some surprises (but nothing too jarring - of course). Love me a cosy crime and this series is one of my top choices of the genre. Didn’t 100% love the very end (no spoilers..) and think the reactions around it could’ve been developed further. Still a solid cosy crime read. Thanks for the ARC!

I really enjoy spending time with the characters in the Marlow Murder Club. I love how each of the women are different, but work so well together and how each are strong in their own way.
The mystery surrounding the murders in this book definitely kept me guessing, although I did have an inkling at one point.
This is a great series and I really want to watch the TV show now to see it come to life more.

I love this series and I legitimately clapped like a sealion when I heard I was getting a proof.

The way that Murder on the Marlow Belle ended had me desperate to discover what happened next. Though Judith has always been central to the mysteries of the Marlow Murder Club, this book had her past holding centre stage.

I will be writing a full review closer to publication, because I have so much to say.

Robert Thorogood’s writing is like having a cup of tea and one biscuit. You intend to stop at just one, but of course you go back for more.
One chapter leads to another, and before you know it you’re halfway through the book. His writing is comforting, addictive and thoroughly
entertaining.

Judith, Suzie and Becks are at it again, this time with a double murder to solve in the fifth book of The Marlow Murder Club series by Robert Thorogood.

Judith’s past is catching up with her. She’s been keeping secrets, and a stranger is determined to bring the truth to light. The story begins where the previous book, The Murder on the Marlow Belle, ends, with Judith receiving an unexpected visit that raises questions about her late husband’s death. If you haven’t read the earlier books, I’d definitely recommend catching up first.

This series has become a truly cosy and joyful read for me. I’ve loved returning to these well-established characters, who complement each other perfectly. The humour and banter in this instalment are even more apparent, and there’s a wonderfully familiar warmth in the way the ladies interact with each other and with the local residents. They’re more confident and forceful now — and even the vicar’s wife is starting to take a few risks!

The murders themselves aren’t dark; this remains very much a cosy mystery, but with clever plotting and satisfying twists. You may think you’ve guessed the solution, but there’s always something unexpected waiting. Judith keeps you on your toes with the way she pieces everything together, often running rings around the police.
The novel is full of wit, humour, and just enough clues to keep you guessing.

You’d think I might start to tire of the series by now, but these characters continue to thoroughly entertain me. I always look forward to seeing what the three ladies get up to next, they've become like old friends.

Thank you to Rachel Quinn and HQ for the proof copy, which I received in return for my honest opinion.

This book came out yesterday.
I started the audiobook for this today.

I.... inhaled this book in one sitting.
...Oops.

An incredible, INCREDIBLE book. I was SO happy to be back in Marlow with the wonderful Judith Potts, and her friends Becks and Suzie. But this book finally, FINALLY shines the light on the biggest mystery of them all. What actually happened to Judith's husband? And will her past finally come back to haunt her?

As with the other books, not only are we dealing with yet another murder in Marlow, but also the mystery of Judith's ex husbands daughter coming to Marlow to accuse her of murder. Judith, naturally, is completely shaken by this and hopes she can keep this contained... but as always, she eventually let's her friends into her troubles. But... is that the best idea? Or will it make her predicament more complicated?

As for the murder mystery, they are on their own as their friend is suspended from the force. A famous football player who lived in Marlow turns up dead. His wife is shocked, as she doesn't know why someone would kill him. Even though they can't get any major help from the police, Judith and her friends really can't help themselves from investigating. Because this murder may be linked to something bigger than only murder, and they need to get to the bottom of it.

I loved the reveals throughout the book, and I really adored how the book wrapped up. I do really hope there will be more books in the future, but with the way this books ends, I wouldn't be super sad. Because the story wraps up in the most beautiful way.

If you are looking for a super cosy murder mystery series, then I cannot recommend the Marlow Murder Club any higher. It's quite frankly the best murder series I've read!!

Judith, Suzie and Becks are back, and once again Marlow is absolutely not coping. The Mysterious Affair of Judith Potts picks up straight after The Murder on the Marlow Belle, with Judith facing some uncomfortable truths about her past while two fresh murders and a dash of blackmail land on their plates.

Robert Thorogood’s writing is still like having a cup of tea with one biscuit that accidentally turns into five. It’s comforting, addictive, and ridiculously easy to devour. The humour and banter shine, and being back with these characters feels instantly familiar and cosy.

The murders stay firmly in cosy-crime territory, with clever plotting, playful twists, and just enough misdirection to keep you guessing. You’ll think you’ve solved it. You probably haven’t. Another delightful, chaotic time with this amateur sleuth trio.

P.S.: Was this the final book in this series?? It felt a bit final or something?

3.5⭐️

The main mystery had a lot of moving parts, yet it seemed like we were floating in circles and not diving very deep. I will say, I did not guess whodunnit, and I always love it when that happens.

I enjoyed the resolution of Judith’s mysterious affair. However I will say this plot line started off hot, ended well, but lagged in the middle.

This series overall has been interesting. I can 100% see it being a tv show (which obviously it now is) with the amount of story we get from each book fitting perfectly into an hour time slot. But as a novel I seem to always be wanting more, no matter how much I like the recurring characters and mystery set ups themselves.

Judith Potts is a wonderful protagonist who has a murky past which comes into the fore in the most recent novel in the series. Whisper it quietly but I think these are better than the pensioners at Coopers Chase. As the story moves through Marlow and the local celebrities you are constantly wanting to find out more.

Last week was so chilly that I was glad to be reading the cosiest of cosy crimes, complete with some scenes in Corfu, albeit in a summer storm.

In the latest of Robert Thorogood’s Marlow Murder series we not only unmask a murderer in a position of trust (!) but also get to the bottom of the continuing mystery of whether main character Judith Potts was involved in her husband’s death - a saga that has been running in the background of all the books in the series.

As usual, there are plenty of red herrings to keep us guessing and Judith’s friends Becks, Suzie and Tanika each play their part, but Judith really is the star of the show, and even after finding out about her difficult past, she’s still the character from fiction I’d most like to be when I grow up (minus the nude swimming, of course).

nah robert, that's not it.
the first book in this series was a blast and i enjoyed it thoroughly, which is why i'm always looking forward to a new installment. going through my last few reviews of the series though, i've noticed i've actually quite a few points of critique for the last ones. seems it has almost become a sense of nostalgia or maybe the world of the story in general that i like, a kind of construction in my mind that now has little to do with the actual character development and actual stories. the tv series, which i absolutely adored, might be part of that.
i feel like these books are virtue signalling with their "poc police woman and fierce group of ladies" shtik, but it is all such a liberal, individualist copaganda approach. in this installment, there is an over the top feminine, energetic tv presenter that is a misogynist stereotype of older women if you ask me. then there is the thing where he kinda makes a ridiculous asshole out of that ghostwritten pick up artist asshole of an author, but then he writes a young woman of colour as an assistant of this gross predator seriously, what were you THINKING?!
then there is some fatphobia going on (AGAIN robert, as if a million reviewers hadn't critisized you the last time?!) and the whole bad apple is simply a wet liberal dream at this point.
one thing that really bugged me as well is noticing how badly suzie is portrayed. maybe the voice the narrator does adds to that, but to me it sounded again and again like she was made out to be unattractive, insensitive and at times rather ridiculous. like, she's still very likeable, so i wouldn't mind that much. but what i feel very icky about is that they then went on to have her - of all three leads - be portrayed by a black actress in the tv series. it is pretty obvious that she's supposed to be white in the books (don't bring up the hermione excuse, if you have a black lead in a detective story, you need to talk about police violence or i won't take you seriously at all), but all of these traits on a black woman just fit too well with all the stereotypes of black women being ugly and not feminine enough, black female characters often being the de-sexed comic relief in media. i think those traits are toned down in the tv show, which i'm greatful for, but i still think it is questionable, because of course this casting has implications both ways.
finally, the audiobook felt rather loveless, there were several editing errors and the narrator did suzies voice for becks on at least two occasions - apparently no one noticed because no one cares. the mystery was okay, i didn't care that much tbh and was rather bored in the first half. also, brendon being such a comic book bad guy (again, sexism has to be on the nose for this author understand it as such, apparently) didn't go away by his one human moment mid way, and so he stayed a totally onedimensional character. eleni seemed to me like the stereotype of a southern european woman (passionate, aggressive, impatient) and got very little depth after all. i've read about people being annoyed with judith from the first installment onwards, but this is the first time i actually agree. all three (or rather, four) of the main characters seemed very superficial in their interactions, the ending felt rushed and weird and i never even understood the crossword clue (was it even really mentioned?).
the one thing that redeems this a little for me is the portrayal of judith and phillipos' death. that part had a lot of nuance and even though i think profounder things could have been said about why victims stay, about mother's who don't hold their son's accountable, about how victim's aren't believed, about female agency and rage, i was very much fine with what was there.
all in all, this installment lacks warmth, passion for the story (apart from judith's backstory) and an understanding of power dynamics and strucural violence. i'll probably read the next one because, as i said, "nostalgia", but i'll be more careful with my enthusiasm.

I absolutely love Judith, Becks, and Suzy, I did read somewhere that this is the last book in this series, I am hoping I misread that, but I’m keeping my fingers crossed that the author either continues this series or has something new planned, because I’m not ready to say goodbye just yet.

When footballer Gary Wise is found murdered on the grounds at the bottom of his garden, DI Tanika Malik unexpectedly approaches the three ladies asking them to help investigate. This alone is unusual, after all, their consultant lanyards are out of date, and Tanika is normally telling them to stay well away from police business. Because they get her into trouble. Even stranger is the fact that DS Brendan Perry appears to be running the investigation. So what exactly is going on?

That’s not the only thing that feels off. Judith isn’t fully paying attention, her mind clearly elsewhere, which is highly unusual for Judith Potts. She loves puzzles of all kinds, crosswords, mysteries, and especially murder. As questions begin to form around who would want Gary Wise dead, another body turns up. This time it’s famous author Mike Saxon, killed in exactly the same way. Coincidence? Judith doesn’t believe in coincidences.

As the ladies dig deeper into the backgrounds of both men, links begin to emerge, confirming their suspicions that the murders are connected, but not yet revealing who would want them dead.

Judith’s strange behaviour continues, and when Becks and Suzy meet Eleni Paphides, things become slightly clearer. There has always been a bit of an air of mystery round Judith, that she keeps quiet about. Eleni is angry, upset, and accusing Judith of murder. But who does she believe Judith has murdered, and what evidence does she claim to have? Is Judith guilty?

I absolutely loved this book. The pacing is spot on, the plot flows effortlessly, and it kept me fully engaged from start to finish. I didn’t know who the killer was, well, I had a theory, but I wasn’t certain, and that made the reveal all the more satisfying.

This book can be read as a standalone, but I would highly recommend reading the earlier books in the series first. Getting to know the characters and their quirks adds so much depth. There were several laugh-out-loud moments for me, especially involving the “Gee Gees” and Suzy. I love when an author can balance murder with humour, and this author does it exceptionally well.

The series has also been adapted for television, and as I was reading, I found myself picturing the actors in their roles, which added an extra dimension to the story, though that may be a personal thing.

This is an easy ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ read for me. I absolutely loved it, and if this truly is the final book in the series, then I sincerely hope the author has something new waiting for fans very soon.

Thank you to #netgalley and #HQ for an eARC of this, I also had to buy the physical copy of this, how could I not. In exchange for an honest, fair and unbiased review. All thoughts and opinions are my own and have not been influenced in any way.

I received an audiobook from the publisher through NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. It has not affected my opinions.

THE MYSTERIOUS AFFAIR OF JUDITH POTTS is a murder mystery with two cases - one present and one historic - happening at once.

There were two mysteries in this book. The local celebrities being murdered was the book's primary focus and it drives the plot forward. However, it is the historical case of Judith's husband that gives the book stakes. Because she is the main character (edging over Becks and Susie), you are invested in her and want her to not be arrested. I do appreciate when there are reasons beyond just "work out who did it" for why we should want to find the killer - it makes it a more engaging read I think.

The solution itself to the modern murders was interesting. The timeline for the initial steps felt a little shaky to me (a lot of forward planning for things that ended up feeling a bit spur of the moment/reactive.) I definitely found the historical mystery of what really happened to Judith's husband. I would need to read more of the previous books to see if any of it was set up in those books, or whether this was an author doing a good job of not making it feel like all new information was coming to light.

I liked that cryptic crosswords were used in part of the book - I am terrible at them but I find them strangely fascinating. They're a type of code after all. I would have liked to actually see some of the key clues in order to give the reader a chance to guess the solution (I felt it was obvious something was being communicated but the exact information was being withheld, which I am not keen on in mysteries.)

I do appreciate that these books can be read as standalones given I've gone from book three (THE QUEEN OF POISONS) to book five. There are references to the general shape of the previous book but the killer isn't revealed, which means they can be read out of order (I do have book four to read!)

The audiobook is narrated by Nicolette McKenzie, who handles the three women's voices with ease, meaning you can tell them apart instantly from tone.

Well... haven't we all be waiting for this book with baited breath after the way the author left book four. With an unexpected visitor arriving at Judith's door... Obviously you know all this having started from the beginning and having read the previous, all cracking, books in order...
And what an unexpected, and definitely unwanted, guest Eleni turns out to be. But I will have to leave you to discover who she is and what she wants from Judith yourself - spoilers...
Meanwhile, there is also murder afoot! And, as usual, Judith, Suzie, and Becks want in on the action as "police advisers". But there is a spanner in the works as Tanika is not available to co-opt them as she has been suspended. Leaving DS Brendan Parry in charge. What could possible go wrong there!
Then murder becomes murders and the chase is on for our erstwhile amateur super sleuths to go it alone to figure out who and why, which when they eventually figure it out, it is more than shocking!
Oooo I loved this book. Especially as, with Judith a wee bit preoccupied, Susie and Becks have to come into the spotlight a wee bit more. And then with regard to Judith and her mysterious visitor, well this just brings up a load of interesting backstory for her and also provides the spark for her to really open up to her friends.
And then the main case... wowsers... although I did guess a tad early, and yes it's "one of those" solutions which I don't usually like, but it was well done, and I did have a blast reading the rest of the book so I can easily forgive the author. I mean, some of the ways that the girls used to wheedle information out of people did impress me and occasionally made me chuckle. And, at the end of the day, it did all make sense, and was wholly satisfying.
All in all, a cracking addition to an already well loved series. My thanks go to the Publisher and Netgalley for the chance to read this book.

This is the fifth book in a series about three women acting as amateur sleuths but the first one in the series that I read although I did watch the adaptation on BBC of the first novel. I really enjoyed myself there so when the chance presented itself to jump in here I didn’t have to think twice.

I don’t often read cosy mystery novels but if they were all as cleverly constructed as this I’d definitely read more in the genre. The mysterious murder of a famous football player was only the start of an investigation to sink your teeth into and it’s marvelous how the three ladies of the Marlow Murder Club – Judith, Becks and Suzie – were able to sleuth their way toward a brilliant ending.

Judith is a little distracted though as she becomes a suspect herself in her late husband’s death. At least her stepdaughter is accusing her of killing him and having evidence. What evidence? Whatever it is, it is rattling Judith and I wondered how she was going to deal with this. Although she didn’t have a pleasant life it seemed, I was happy with the backstory of her character. It didn’t change the way I felt about her but it did make me get to know her on a deeper level and who doesn’t love a tortured hero? The whole did she or didn’t she kill her husband certainly kept me in suspense.

The clues were there but I missed them so really well done from the author. When they were pointed out in the end I hadn’t anticipated them at all (in hindsight yes but I was too swept up in the story to be critical). There was no shortage of suspects but I didn’t suspect the actual killer either. Once again, he had me there and I didn’t mind at all that I didn’t solve this one on my own. If you really want to solve it yourself you need to keep on your toes at all times! The Mysterious Affair Of Judith Potts is a wonderful addition to the series and I believe the author is not done for a long time yet.

Marlow Murder Club #5

There’s been another murder in Marlow, closely following on from the last successful investigation. The latest victim is ex Premier League footballer, Gary Wise who is shot in woods behind his home. Gary is working with ghostwriter Harry Asquith on an autobiography, perhaps someone doesn’t want him to tell all. However, Judith Potts is very distracted and distinctly off her game. Does this have anything to do with a tense encounter the night before with Eleni Paphides? It seems Judith’s past is coming back to bite and Eleni appears to have very sharp teeth. Two characters, both with pasts they might want to forget. The pressure is on for Judith, Suzie and Becks a.k.a. The Marlow Murder Club to find answers.

It’s another fun and entertaining read as these three use all their wiles to get answers, with a fair old bit of manipulation and kidology along the way. Okay, I think it’s not unfair to say this novel is on the far-fetched side but if it keeps you reading on and enjoying it, then that can’t be a bad thing. Parts of the plot are clever with puzzles being set and of course, Judith is in a league of her own when it comes to those.

These are really good characters that Robert Thorogood has created and I enjoy the dynamics between them as well as the Marlow setting, particularly Judith‘s house by the river (with her daily swim of course) which provides an atmospheric backdrop.

Overall, these are good lightweight capers, easy to read with writing that flows. They are a lively combination of humour, cheesy dialogue, intrigue and mayhem with a dash of murder or two. Solved, natch, by our intrepid three.

With thanks to NetGalley and especially to HQ for the much appreciated early copy in return for an honest review.

I have been loving The Marlow Murder Club books for a little over a year now, so I was SO HONORED to receive an ARC copy of it. When I tell you, the moment that email came in, I stopped everything I was doing to start reading this book!

AND IT WAS SO GOOD!!!

I love how every book gets slightly more unhinged, imo. Like Becks starting as a timid vicars wife in book one to now being a woman who actively goes against the police's wishes was such a character growth moment for her! I mean, that character growth has been happening throughout the entire series, but this was the book it really stood out to me.

She has always been my favorite. Becks, I love you with my whole heart.

Not that I don't love Suzie or Judith. Suzie is literally the most iconic woman I have ever read about. I mean talk about a woman who does it ALL! I would trust her with my dog. Judith, however, I would not. She scares me (in the best way possible lol). And some of her crossword clues had me CACKLING (I know I'm not really meant to laugh at them, but they're so crazy smart that I can't NOT laugh).

Speaking of Judith, we finally got the moment I have been waiting FOREVER (one year) for!!!!!! All of the foreshadowing and the lore drops in the previous books have led up to this one, and Robert Thorogood did NOT disappoint. I mean, I knew she had something to do with her husbands death, but in true Thorogood fashion, I had NO IDEA how she did it!!!

The same could not be said for the main murders of the book. Typically, with any other mystery (or book, for that matter) I read, I can guess the killer or plot twist from a mile away. I AM ON BOOK 5 OF THOROGOOD'S, AND I HAVE NEVER GUESSED IT. Am I slightly infuriated? Yes, my ego is quite bruised. BUT, I loved reading about how the murder(s) were executed by the LAST person I thought did it.

There were a lot of pieces at the end (specifically the last 2-3 chapters) where I thought the writing was very info dumpy, and I truly don't think I'm the exact demographic for this books, as I am a 21 year old female who typically reads fantasy, but I really enjoyed this book.

Overall, I am giving this book 3 stars. It was a really good ending to Judith's history, and I would definitely recommend this book and the entire series to someone who enjoys mystery novels!
