“We were just kids… but we can’t be anymore. Not with everything this world has become.”
This highly-anticipated sequel to BEDLAM is just as action-packed and slightly more heartbreaking than it’s predecessor. We follow Willa this time, who swiftly became my favourite character during the first book. She leaves her friends behind and goes back into the contamination zone to find her brother. Her journey comes with a lot of challenges (and Morts!) and a few new characters get introduced by and by.
As you follow a smaller group of characters, SWEVEN feels more intimate and it makes these new allies and friends grow on you much faster. They all are emotionally extremely relatable and their well written and rich personalities will make you easily love them, whether they are on the right side or not. Knowing Andrew and having read BEDLAM, you can be sure from the beginning that they won’t all be survivors to this extremely hazardous world. Are they all trustworthy? Will the dog, Hound, make it? Can she find her brother? Will she eventually reunite with her friends and all our other favourite characters from the first book? SWEVEN will promise to hit you in the feels!
Besides Willa being a badass female lead, she also gives us much needed asexual representation, even though it doesn’t take the focus away from the story. Andrew gives us a few romantic scenes being very well placed, it feels right for the characters at that time and their feelings are very genuine and relatable. This addition made me personally feel seen and belong, which makes Willa and this book more special than I could put into words.
The sequel also gives us an insight into the origin of the virus, which makes me eager to read more in the third book. I loved SWEVEN just as much as BEDLAM and I am blown away by Andrew’s writing. There aren’t many books giving so much action on each page, which makes SWEVEN a breath-taking read and I hope to be able to travel further into this world very soon.
