Sumire’s dad spotted her and Reo walking home together and that means the jig is up? Maybe not, but then they spill all the beans at once and there might actually be an issue with Sumire dating her kidnapper. Who saw that coming?
Pure car crash entertainment, same as before. Nothing about this story makes a lick of sense and I don’t especially like it, but it’s deadly entertaining to read as a consequence. Every time I think it can’t get any more cringe, off it goes.
There is something so desperately awful about the clothing, as usual, so that maintains one consistent sticking point. Even an outfit as basic as a suit looks like it was never designed to be on the human form, inasmuch as these humans have human forms.
I’m glad that they don’t shy away from Sumire and Reo’s affection, but I also really wish they did - every kiss or hug in this story is overstated to the point of screaming. If you want to watch the unsexiest affection in manga history, it might be on display here.
Reo should know a little better at 23 than Sumire does at 17, but they’re both utterly hopeless and proclaiming their love and desire for sex in some of the most woeful dialogue. I suppose, actually, you could see that as a plus - it accurately reflects the wooing capabilities of the typical teenager.
And it means well! I have no doubt that this is taking itself 100% seriously, minus the chibi portions that are admittedly a fun addition. Yet this manga never encountered a situation that wasn’t so wrought that it couldn’t be improved by being overwrought.
When dad learns the horrible truth that his daughter is dating her kidnapper and they didn’t even get a trip to Sweden out of it? His response just… I don’t know if it’s his dialogue or the art or both, but I could cry with laughter just thinking about it.
Oh, they don’t even blink that he’s got six years on their teenage daughter either. The kidnapping thing is the dealbreaker. This series, I swear.
It’s not all bad. I do love Sumire’s mother, who her daughter definitely takes after and then some. She’s clearly of the opinion that if it doesn’t work out for her daughter, she’d like a crack at Reo herself.
And there’s a five second rival who shows up and turns out to not be much of one after all, a pleasant surprise, honestly. It is very funny to see a high school girl throw down with a grown-ass adult over a guy, no matter the context, mind, but it was satisfying to see that tossed aside quickly.
It’s just that everything from the premise to the fashion to the characters is beyond ludicrous. It’s practically a parody of what I like in my shojo. To say nothing of that godawful book of Sumire’s dad, which they try to make into a big thing but cannot given the entire vibe of this story. That all to say, if you’ve been loving it up to now, nothing has changed.
3 stars - this story damn near makes me cackle with how goofy it is, yet without a dollop of insight. There is no chance I won’t be back for the next volume after the shocking revelation of Sumire’s plan to bring everybody together at the end of this.
This review covers the first five books in the ”Lightning and Romance” series by Mikimoto, Rin
I am not really a big fan of the age-gap trope. Mainly it's because either the story is written well or giving me the ick. I tell you this because it means I expect a lot from this trope before I want to spend my time buying and reading multiple volumes over several years.
I binge-read the first five volumes within one day.
I wish this story didn't try to sell itself as an age-gap story because the age gap is not the big taboo. I won't spoil it for you, but Reo (the male MC) and Sumire (the female MC) met when they were younger. Their meeting was caused by a horrible background story, and their meeting again and romance will cause grief and worries from their families.
Sumire is new at romance and questions her sanity in falling for the bad guy who has a past as a Yakuza, but she sees a different side to Reo – he's a caring big brother, he's kind and a cat lover – so she makes advances. Now, Reo is very adamant about not loving, nor wanting to date Sumire, but in reality, he's a cinnamon bun who blushes at her advances, and he's in danger of giving in when she's near. I love Sumire's guts. Many female MCs in shojo are either subdued or positive in an airheaded way. She's neither. Sumire is very intelligent and acts based on her morals, giving her this older-than-her-age vibe and she seems like a person who thinks before she acts. So her dreams of love with Reo are the big thing.
There's a seven years age-gap between the MCs. Like I said, the age gap has (so far) nothing to say in the story. It progresses the sex talk (Sumire is very open and invites to this sort of conversation) so if you like a bit more steam in your shojo stories, I think this will meet your needs.
It's the cinnamon bun hero, the gutsy heroine, and the mystery of this horrible past that might split them apart, that makes me want to read this series.
📖 𝗧𝗼𝗺𝗼 #𝟯:
WHAT. THE. HELL 🤯 Ese final me dejó gritando.
I don’t love the artist’s style - the character’s proportions often seem off and their faces do a weird thing for emphasis.
They are strangely straightforward about sex, given Sumire’s age and inexperience. It’s not surprising how her parents took the “oh, and he was my kidnapper” revelation, particularly as her dad was already upset there was a boyfriend at all. I appreciated how honest they were, though the timing could be better. I also really liked that her mom corrected the dad that it wasn’t the kidnapping that broke up their family, it was them.
It’s ok, nothing particularly special or horrible, though some may disagree given the whole kidnapping issue.

I really like how they're dealing with Sumire's parents finding out about them. It adds a good amount of drama that is also realistic. The age gap is still a little weird, especially considering he goes to high school still but it's not a huge deal for me.
Things got intense between them pretty fast in this volume lol
The short bonus graduation manga at the end was really cute, I NEED the author to make it a whole series asap!

Soooo I’m still meh over this. But I don’t hate it enough to stop reading lol.
RECAP: he tells her dad they’re just classmates, some studying and mild teasing, decides to introduce him to her parents, runs into boss’s sister, meet the parents and confess who Reo is in the past, ends with a proposed camping trip.
The characters in this manga are all beautiful. The author must have a penchant for western traits. The reading is pleasant. I like the straightforwardness of the protagonists and that the approaches are direct but gradual.
