In a kingdom where souls are bound to magical animals called Shadows, Rowena’s Shadow is a ghost—silent, powerless, and a death sentence if anyone finds out.

The citizens of Wyre share a soul with their Shadow, a supernatural animal companion that gives them the ability to perform magic. But Rowena was born with a ghost for a Shadow, incapable of magic and marking her as a dangerous anomaly. Her superstitious neighbors would say she must be reported to the king (and executed for good measure!). And they would if they knew she existed—but they don’t.

Hidden from the world with only her father and ghost for company, Rowena’s made the best of her secret life. She fills her days tinkering, inventing, and longing for the magic everyone else has.

When Penalynn Graft, a disgraced Scholastic who refuses to use her own Shadow’s magic, is banished to Rowena’s city, rumors swirl about her rebellion.

Both Rowena and Penalynn are one hidden, one exiled. Both are cut off from one by birth, the other by choice.

Together, they could unearth the truth about the bond linking humans to Shadows, which, until now, has been lost under a veil of ancient mythology.

But in a world where souls are split in two, the truth might shatter everything.

With the stakes of The Golden Compass, the thrilling action of The Wingfeather Saga, and the heart and spiritual depth of the Chronicles of Narnia, Shadowless is a gripping fantasy tale that will captivate fans of epic adventures and magical worlds.

I feel so privileged to have received this ARC because this is truly a special story. I usually struggle with YA fantasy, but not so with Shadowless!

I bonded right away with Rowena and her sweet Shadow named Ghost. Not to mention Pennalyn, her fiery mentor full of secrets 👀 and Titus, the walking green flag of a man who is the other half of a heart-warming subplot romance.

The concept of everyone having magical shadows is similar to the dæmons of The Golden Compass, but with a twist that turns it into an interesting philosophical and spiritual question. I don’t want to give too much away, but I loved how this book uses the Shadows to explore themes around the ways we can often be at war within ourselves by holding contradictory beliefs and desires.

A forewarning: this story is told in third person omniscient POV. It doesn’t bounce around constantly—for the most part each chapter will have one main character it’s following—but every so often we will get reactions from other characters in the scene. It took some getting used to, but I ultimately enjoyed getting to have that peek into all the characters’ minds.

The ending has me so excited to see where this story is going! Cannot wait for book two. An enthusiastic recommendation from me!!

This book was a bit outside of my usual reading comfort zone, but I was excited to give it a try. Right from the beginning, I was drawn into Rowena’s story..she’s been hidden away because she doesn’t have a regular shadow (but one similar to a ghost) and no magic, which makes people think she’s cursed. But as the story unfolds, you start to wonder if that "curse" might actually be something more powerful.

When Penalynn came into the picture, I was relieved. She chooses not to use magic, and with Rowena having none at all, they made a great pair. Both are outsiders in their world, and together they start to uncover the strange connection between shadows and humans. Their journey is full of surprises, interesting side characters, and even a bit of romance, which I really enjoyed.

The pacing was a little slow at first, and it took me a while to feel fully connected to the story. And just when I got really into it...it ended on a cliffhanger! Because of the slower start and the fact that this isn’t my usual genre, I’d give it more of a 3.5-star rating, but I’m rounding up to 4. For a debut novel, that’s pretty solid, and from what I’ve seen in other reviews, it may just come down to personal taste.

That said, I’m definitely curious to see where Rowena’s story goes next in book two!

I received a complimentary copy of the book, and this review reflects my honest opinion.

This book is unlike any book I've read before. Rowan is hidden away, she pretty much doesn't exist. I love her spunk and creative spirit. I can only imagine what it would be like to only have your father and his shadow as your companions for 15 years. While she does have her shadow ghost, she has no idea what is going on in her little friends brain. I love her determination to see the world even though she could be spotted and killed just for being who she is. Penalynn's banishment blows my mind. I also love that she stuck to her decision even with the consequences. This story is beautiful yet full of secrets and adventures.

🖤When souls are split in two, the truth might shatter everything.🖤

Alison Robinson’s debut novel, Shadowless, is an engaging magical adventure. With the depth of Narnia and the spirit of The Hobbit, this novel transported me to a new world, while still revealing parallels to our own time and place. Shadowless, the first book in this series, has left me pondering some important existential questions: What is our purpose? Why are we made a certain way? Is everything we desire truly good or what is best for us? For the sake of the citizens of Wyre (and my own sanity), I cannot wait to see these themes play out further in Alison’s subsequent novels.

Despite themes of mortality, loss, and even haunting imagery of bones and decay, the story remains clean—free of gratuitous violence, explicit language, or unnecessary crudeness. It’s the kind of book I can confidently recommend to any reader looking for an epic adventure without moral compromise.

Romance takes a refreshing passenger seat in Shadowless, it is present but never overshadowing the grander story. This makes the book enjoyable for both male and female readers—proving that classic fantasy doesn’t need forced romantic subplots to be compelling. In a literary world often saturated with darker, edgier content, Shadowless stands as a beacon of what fantasy can be—sweeping, meaningful, and utterly transportive. Alison Robinson has proven that she is a voice to watch in the genre, and I cannot wait to see where this series takes us next.

✨ ARC Book Review ✨

Shadowless by Alison Robinson

STAR RATING: 4.5/5⭐️

REVIEW:
I am blown away by the magic system in this book. How humans have shadows that cast magic for them? It was such a unique story that I’m absolutely in love with. The shadows were all so, so cute! Shaped like animals? I loved it! Rowena and her shadow, Ghost, really took the stage for me. The character growth and realization through out was done so well. I cannot wait for more of this world!

At first I thought this story was going to be similar to every other fantasy story and not in a bad way because I love them, but it's very different in an amazing way! I was very quickly immersed into this beautiful world full of detailed imagery, complex characters, and unique magic.

The magic system is unlike anything else I've read, souls are split at birth and half is contained in an "animal" which is their shadow and allows them to perform all sorts of magical feats. The shadows sound adorable 😍 especially Ghost which is the MC Rowena's magicless shadow. Making her an anomaly and something people are suspicious about, not to mention she could be the fulfillment of a prophecy their king fears.

The world building was so good! There is two places talked about and each one was different and I could picture it all. But mostly I liked the world building in their systems, like government, and how the people interact with each other, traditions, the magic system of course, and it's hard to explain but it was really good!

There is multiple POV's which I always enjoy as it makes things interesting. But it's mostly told from Rowena and Penalynn's who are the MC's, with a couple chapters from two other characters.

Rowena has been hidden away and secluded her entire life, ashamed and afraid of anyone finding out about her being magicless. She is extremely smart, loves to learn, very kind, and grows to learn her strength and importance despite not having magic. So much is stacked against her but she doesn't let it get her down (for long at least 😉) She is a bit of rebel, and plots unravel that she may be a part of.

Penallyn is the other MC, she is a bit older than Rowena. She's got secrets and her past is kept hidden even from the reader until towards the end of the book. Honestly I went back and forth with liking and disliking her lol, she is strong, smart, determined, and a rebel as well. But she at times is a bit snobby, mean, and doesn't always treat Rowena well but in the end she protects her and does truly care for her. So I think she's alright 🤭

They both want freedom, are extremely smart, are anomalies in different ways, and have had some difficulty in their lives. And work together to figure out a major truth that could turn their world upside down, though Rowena doesn't realize it at first.

The story progresses a little slowly at first but it also only gives you snippets of information at a time which constantly kept me intrigued. Then towards the end like the last 100 pages wow did it get rolling!! It was insane and I couldn't stop turning pages, so many twists, heartbreaks, fears, edge of your seat action! I loved it!

Now as a very small subplot there is some blooming romance, but isn't a main focus, I loved the bit we did get though and I love the couples!
I can't wait to find out more about this world, and the characters in the next book.

Content: No-Spice/brief non descriptive kisses only, no swearing, mild violence, death, wounds, blood, grief, loss of limbs (nothing gory or descriptive)

Shadowless, Author Alison Robinson's debut novel was full of adventure, excitement, and the reminder that sometimes what makes us different is exactly what makes us special.

It is a dual POV written in third person and I found both of the main characters to be written well. Both Rowena and Penalynn had wonderful character development throughout the story.
The reasons why they each did not use magic like everyone else were different from each other, but they both were such special characters and enjoyable to read about.
The shadows were a really cool concept that added depth to the story, Ghost was especially hilarious and cute.

The storyline was great, it was both interesting and moved forward at an even pace.
I enjoyed the world-building, as it really set the stage for the story, and brought it to life for the reader.

The ending definitely had me ready to know what happens to the characters, and I look forward to reading the next book in the series.

This book was delightful!

What’s not to love? You’ve got a solid coming of age story, a cozy setting that just might not be what it seems, and a mysterious protagonist trying to uncover the dark secrets of the universe in her castle basement (spirit fox friendemy included).

From the opening chapter I was hooked, and I am still hooked even months after finishing the last. Rowena and Penalynn (my personal fave) are thoroughly engaging protagonists, and it was an absolute thrill to watch them dive into the mysteries and magic of Wyre. The rest of the cast is fun, too.

And that mystery at the heart of this story? Oh! I wanted to scream (I was on an airplane so that wouldn’t have been ideal). It’s masterful.

My one disappointment is that I can’t read the next book right now.

If you like ominously cozy fantasy stories, want some first crush pining, need a little mystical intrigue, or just love magic animal companions, then this is the book for you. Also, please pet your spirit foxes.

4.5⭐️ rounded up! This was such a breath of fresh air! Loved the imaginative world and magic system. Rowena and Penalynn are such great characters in totally different ways. Rowena’s story made me cry multiple times. I love the idea of the shadows and people being connected which also makes Rowena’s story heartbreaking (at first). I love Ghost! She was my favorite little character and I can’t wait to learn more about her, Isla, and the Wandering. There were a few twists I didn’t see coming which I LOVED. I can’t wait for book 2

Shadowless
By Alison Robinson

Another 5 star read for me! I may be reading fewer books this year but I feel like the standard has been super high.

This is YA with magical animal companions, a mystery involving a prophecy, and lots of good character work. I love our main two characters, they are very different and so have very distinct voices but they have a lot of the same values which make them a good team. Our supporting cast is just so well written as well. Robinson has a way of introducing a character and almost immediately I feel like I have a really good picture of them and their character and values. The world building and magic system are fantastic as well. We have some of the usual tropes but I am really enjoying Robinson’s spin on them.

I can’t wait for the next one!

I enjoyed this cozy YA fantasy. I thought the magic system was interesting, the characters were likable, and the setting was lovely. The theme of wrestling with different aspects of yourself really resonated, and I’m very interested to see how it plays out in the next book.

I only had one minor issue, and that is that the plot felt a little disjointed through the middle. I couldn’t really put my finger on what the plot actually was, and it left me feeling a little lost as to where the story was going to go. But then about 3/4 through it became clearer, and I was feeling very invested at that point.

This was such a refreshing book to read, as it’s a young adult book that is actually for young adults, with a wholesome story and no explicit content. I immediately gave it to my 13 year old daughter, who blasted through it and loved it, and now my 12 year old daughter is reading it and enjoying it as well, and we’ll all be anxiously waiting for book 2. So I certainly recommend it for you and your preteens or teens too ☺️💛

If you enjoy the fantasy genre of have a young adult or teen that enjoys it then this is a book you may want to add to your TBR list or shopping cart. I honestly didn't know what to expect from this new author. I was immediately intrigued by the cover and yes, I know we aren't supposed to judge a book by one but you know you do anyhow. As I started reading I immediately thought of the series His Dark Materials where the humans share a soul with an animal, however in this book the animals also provide magic to their human counterparts in order to do pretty much everything.

I really enjoyed the storyline and it did take me a few chapters before I really got into it and once I did I could not put it down. There is a beginning light romance in the story that I hope continues in the next book. I really enjoyed the characters and truly there are twists I was definitely not expecting. Overall, I really enjoyed the book and I should warn you that author leaves us in a cliffhanger and I must know what happens next so I will be eagerly awaiting the second book!

I received a copy of the book for review. All views are my own.

4.5 stars - a wonderful book!

This book perfectly mixes a cozy setting with mystery, high stakes, and intriguing twists. The relationships throughout the book are all absolutely wonderful, from teen crushes to the loving-yet-strained relationship between Rowena and her dad to Rowena's relationship with her Shadow, Ghost.

Each character is so well developed, and I absolutely LOVE Rowena. I can't wait to see where the next book takes all these characters, and to see what happens given the reveal at the end of this installment!

If you're looking for a spice-free read with amazing worldbuilding, magical animal companions, and lots of heart, definitely pick this up!

Holy. freaking. canoli. what a book.

the magic structure, the world building, the characters, the struggles, GHOST. I cannot explain in adequate words how much I love this book.

first, we have Rowena, who lives in a world where everyone has magic that they perform with their animal Shadow... everyone except her. she DOES have a shadow, but its a ghost and doesnt have magic. yall, the rage I felt every time someone, even Rowena or her dad, were mean to Ghost... I could have truly burned the world down around Greymere and it's castle. I just want to love her.

then, we have Penalynn... who has so many issues herself that I hope we dive DEEP into them in book two. penalynn doesnt want to have magic, she resents her shadow, essentially she resents a part of her own soul. the amount of therapy and counseling needed to untangle that... like there's just not enough time.

and Titus. my love. my poor sweet love bug Titus. I wont give anything away, but just hold on to your hearts.

if you love YA, strong fantasy writing, strong female characters that need a chance to not be strong for a bit, and intrigue and heartbreak, then buy this book now.

I tend to burn through books at a quick pace. I love falling for characters, learning their stories, and moving along. If I can find a series I enjoy it’s even better because then I get to see the characters develop at a steadier pace.

I did not, however, burn through Shadowless. I recognized about halfway through how much I LOVED these characters and, while I desperately wanted to know their stories, I also wanted to savor them. I wanted to enjoy the development, the tension, the humor…everything. While I’m certain I’ll re-read this book, I’ll never get to read it for the first time again so I wanted to slow it down. Then, of course, like any good book does, this one got a little too good towards the end and I lost all self-control and read the last quarter of the book in one sitting. Nonetheless, I’m glad I read as much of it as I did slowly so I could process and enjoy the fantastic writing, the well-developed story line, and all the world of Greymere had to offer up to this point.

I can’t wait for book two of the series and to find out what’s next.

In a realm where magic is everything....

Shadowless. The title alone intrigued me and I just had to find out what it meant. I have to say that Alison Robinson's debut more than lived up to that most interesting title.

Shadowless features an imaginative world of magic that manages to feel both real and fantastical at the same time. Alison Robinson did an excellent job of fleshing out her magic system, the people, and their culture without bogging the story down.

Definitely aimed at a YA audience I still found Shadowless to be entertaining for me as an adult reader. I love a good clean YA fantasy read and this book from Alison Robinson is precisely that.

Rowena and Penalynn are both great characters. They are very different people but they are enjoyable to read about, easy to like, and you can't help but root for them.

As Shadowless seemed to end on a bit of a cliffhanger I am now most anxious to find out what happens next to my new friends and where Alison Robinson might take them in their journey....

Shadowless is the debut novel by Alison Robinson. It’s a young adult fantasy with a unique magic system that stands out. I’ve read many books in this genre, but this one is quite different.

The story starts with Rowena, who is hidden away because her Shadow—a magical creature that can normally perform magic—is a ghost that cannot. If anyone finds out, she risks being executed. Her greatest wish is to be able to do magic, so she’s willing to risk everything to find a cure.

Far across the kingdom, another girl named Penalyn was born with magic, but she refuses to use it. When their paths cross, they become determined to discover the mysterious link between humans and Shadows, and how they share a soul. I found this part of the story very intriguing. As they search for answers, readers are left wondering what the future holds and if the girls will face harsh consequences. Both characters are very different, but I enjoyed learning about each of them.

The first section moves slower, but the story picks up with surprises and twists in the second half. The ending leaves you with an evil cliffhanger, which kept me hooked. Now I can’t wait for the next book.

Shadowless is a story about magic and life choices without much romance. It’s a clean book that makes you think about what we value and the risks we take. It should appeal to readers of all ages.

Cliffhangers genuinely need to be made illegal. That was not fair. Shadowless was such a unique read, and I can feel the allegory—I was just starting to piece together what it might represent, and then the book was over, and now I am in dire need of a sequel.

Let’s start with a few little nitpicky issues—first off, this book is in first person omniscient perspective, meaning there’s a lot of head hopping. However, in this particular genre and story, it didn’t feel odd, and now I’m wondering… if I reread the Chronicles of Narnia, would I discover all sorts of head hopping? It’s been a minute. But anyhoo, the head hopping didn’t really bother me. There were a lot of all-caps exclamations and multiple punctuation marks, which made the writing feel a bit immature at times, but no significant issues.

Rowena and Pennalynn both annoyed me at moments, but they both had things they were working through and striving toward, and goodness, that big reveal showed why Pennalynn was being so secretive—she had good reason, my friends. I love how Rowena proved her worth even without magic, and she outshone all her peers in scholarly understanding. Her relationship with Titus and Bruce was so cute, and I loved watching their friendships blossom.

Also, can I just say how much I love Ghost? She’s a feisty little beasty, and she’s the perfect addition of spunk to this tale.

Like I already said, the allegorical elements were just piecing together, and I still have a million and a half questions, so I’ll certainly want to pick up the sequel—when is it coming?? This unique read had me turning pages into the night, eager to know what would happen—it really didn’t follow any predicable sequence as far as I could tell. A fantastic read… I highly recommend it to anyone looking for some good allegorical fantasy!

Plus, Ghost. You can’t go wrong.

Shadowless is Alison Robinson’s debut novel, and it was very well written. It was a little bit out of my comfort zone genre-wise, but it stretched me in a good way, and I was not disappointed.

The character development was good. I enjoyed going along with Rowena as she struggled with being hidden and seeing her interact with the world when she got a chance. Rowena has some things to overcome. I enjoyed Penalynn as she navigates being banished. I loved that even though she could have used magic, she chose not to.

The storyline was good. It always takes me a minute to wrap my head around fantasy. I am trying, and I am enjoying it. It can just make for a slower start to the book. As I read on, I got more invested in the story. I loved the shadows; they were really cute, and it was a fun concept. Ghost was funny and cute. Though the ending left me hanging, I look forward to reading the next book.

There is some budding romance, though it is low-spice, and not the main focus.

I am privileged to personally know this author and let me tell you how I prayed for her as she wrote this book! Man, I’m so happy that I was finally able to read. This book is very easy to follow and that makes it an even better read. Rowena and her shadow, Ghost, hooked me from the start. Pennalyn with her boldness and fierce personality keeps you reeling. Both are considered outcasts, but that’s what brings them together in this magical world. And then you throw in Titus….eeek! Can’t wait for book two! Grab a glass of wine and sink into a comfy chair.

In a way Shadowless reminded me a little of The Golden Compass but faith centered with a better message. Rowena has been hidden from society her whole life because of possessing a ‘defective’ shadow—unable to use magic. Pennalyn refuses to use magic, and is banished for holding tight to her values. The two girls struggle to survive in this world, and I found myself loving Rowena’s spunk and thirst for adventure while silently cheering her on the whole story. Overall Shadowless is a thought provoking tale of inner struggles and how we as humans can constantly be in conflict with ourselves.

It took me a minute to get into the book. I kind of found Pennalyn to be annoying at first but eventually she grew on me. There’s definitely some character growth and the romance is very adorable with green flags all around.

Enthralling!

This is fantasy at its finest! The concept is fresh and unique, and the characters are lively and engaging.

The magic system is unlike anything I’ve read before.

But it’s not magic like you might think. A simple system, yet complicated to explain. But it works, and it works well.

This a brand new author for me and she’s one to watch. Thankfully there will be at least one more book, because she’s got to answer for that cliffhanger!

I received an advance copy from the publisher. I’m under no obligation and my review has not been solicited. I’m so happy I found this book! I think you will be too!

It took me a minute to sort out the main characters of Shadowless and what roles they played in the story. But once I got into it, it was off to the races!

Rowena Faye has never left her home. She’s grown up hidden from the world for…reasons. In Wyre, the kingdom where she and her father live, everyone has a Shadow, a magical animal they’re bound to. Everyone but Rowena, that is. Her Shadow isn’t an animal at all. It’s a stunted, weird, ghostlike thing that she can’t communicate with as others can their Shadows, and it’s got absolutely no magic. Rowena hasn’t let that stop her from creating, though, from learning as much as she can about the physical and mechanical world and how things work. But as things go, she can’t stay hidden forever, and her existence becomes known. People’s reactions to her and her freakish Shadow vary, with most coming down on the side of shock and horror.

But not Penalynn Graft. She is a Scholastic, a researcher for the Crown. She has magic, but refuses to use it. She is banished to the city where Rowena lives, pretty much the farthest reaches of Wyre. And when Rowena – magicless Rowena, with the barest runt of a Shadow – comes to her attention, Penalynn recruits her as her Scholastic Assistant almost immediately. Many try to advise her against it, but Penalynn has her reasons.

This book, y’all. I was stunned to learn that it’s Robinson’s debut novel. It doesn’t read like a debut novel. It’s a compelling fantasy tale, with characters you quickly come to care about (or not, in some cases). Penalynn seems like the perfect fit for Rowena, offering her the protection of her office and giving her a purpose that doesn’t require magic. Irritatingly for Rowena, though, Penalynn doesn’t feel the need to enlighten her as to what those reasons are, or as to the true nature of her research.

The stakes are high for Rowena – there are those in high places who would see her dead because they’re so frightened of what she could represent. But as it turns out, perhaps her lack of magic isn’t really a bad thing at all. There’s a twist to people’s unfettered use of magic. You know how the stories say magic always has a price? So it does here, but it wasn’t one I expected.

The romantic storyline isn’t the main focus of the story. Rather, it gives Rowena a reason to engage with the outside world, to care about someone other than her father and herself. It’s nice to see clean romance in a fantasy setting, and shows that on-page spice isn’t essential to telling an engrossing story.

And if you don’t like cliffhangers, well, this book ends on a doozy. Waiting on more of the story is going to be positively torturous!

Shadowless gets five stars from me. Highly recommended for anyone who loves a well-written fantasy with an undercurrent of clean romance. It’s one of those books I enjoyed so much, I wish I could go back and read it for the first time again! It’s in the running to be a favorite of 2025, and Alison Robinson is on my list of authors to watch.

“Too many people had intentions for her fate, robbing her a choice of her own.”

Alison Robinson has created a world where a young girl must navigate through the prejudices of an entire nation. Everything everyone believes Is contingent on an ancient prophesy that has some citizens ostracized already. But, true friendship is discovered and nurtured despite all these obstacles.

I think this could have been a really good book if I hadn’t have gotten caught up on the fact that the Shadows, animal companions with the ability to perform magic, weren’t almost exactly like The Daemons in Pullman’s The Golden Compass. That being said there were some differences. The Shadows perform magic for their counterparts. But, it is made clear that they are part of each other’s soul and that is from The Golden Compass also.

The book takes place in the Kingdom of Wyre which is a fairly well developed world. With a complex political system bordering on religious which is not surprising given Robinson is a christian writer. Her descriptions are precise and clear, I was able to see myself in the book very easily. That being said, sometimes the descriptions did pull me away from the action and slow the pace of the book a bit.

Rowena Faye is a tragic character, an innocent girl with a prophecy that does’t quite fit her, haunting her existence. She is however a strong character with realistic flaws given her situation. Not much growth occurs but her character is consistent in her behavior and reactions.

There are a ton of secrets in this book. Some you can see coming from a mile away and others are a bit of a shock. I do have to give Robinson credit for her last 100 or so pages being chocked full of twists and turns. However, the first 200 pages drug. I understand that development and background has to be presented but it was not done in an exciting way.

There are also a few style issues that I had. Each section is separated into a certain characters voice, however, frequently you would end up in a different characters head and it was quite confusing.

If you are a fan of young adult fantasy novels about friendship and a bit of a mystery then this would appeal to you.

SHADOWLESS pulls the reader into a fantasy world where everyone has magic except for the heroine of the story. It's set in a small town with traditional and superstitious villagers, with both blood and found family and a plot with a few twists and turns. It's an entertaining start to this series and one YA fantasy readers should enjoy.

The start of this book was slow for me. It also felt like a middle grade to young YA book. That lasted for about the first third of the book. After that, things definitely picked up and I found that I couldn't put this one down until the very end. I liked the characters and especially liked the dynamic between Rowena and Penalynn, Rowena and Titus, and Penalynn and Bran. There were a lot of different ways things could have gone and relationships to explore. I appreciated that there weren't any love triangles or insta-love, but instead there are relationships that grow over years and through familiarity and shared experiences. The fantasy parts and the world I thought were well developed and intriguing, especially with the concept of everyone having magic and then one girl being born without it. I'm curious to see what will develop in the next book.

There were some places where more development was needed. There were also some parts where things didn't make sense. These are my only complaints though.

In the end, was it what I wished for? This was definitely worth the read! Both entertaining and intriguing with likable characters. Recommended to YA fantasy readers!

Shadowless was an instant favorite! There is something special about this novel that entices you, like a bit of magic all its own. A quite intense shadow hovers as this unique world comes alive in vivid color.

You feel a mystical aura when you first start to read, this new, unique world unfolding before your very eyes. I felt a hint of the tale of Rapunzel when I was reading about Rowena’s confinement to her home, and the questions instantly began. Why is she perceived dead? Why would her father hide her existence away?

I loved the moments of quiet reflection that Rowena has at the beginning as she is a spectator to life going on while she stays stagnant. I felt that so deep in me, and that’s when I knew that Rowena would be a heroine that I would see glimpses of myself in, and I was right. I love the thought of having a constant companion, separate yet always together, the different yet the same. It’s an interesting premise that I found myself coming back to and pondering.

There are some pretty epic scenes, particularly the final battle, and it was as satisfying as it was long, and I loved every moment! There was also a nice little twist that added a little extra zest to an already robust narrative that was like a cherry on top of an already wonderful story.

Shadowless, the debut novel of Alison Robinson, is a captivating read, perfect for young adult and Christian readers of fantasy alike. From the first page to the last, the reader is swept away into a magical world that, while charming, is full of the foibles and peculiarities of man.

Robinson’s world-building is exceptional, and the kingdom of Wyre’s magic is unlike anything I have ever seen. Shadowless, which spans roughly four years, is largely a coming-of-age tale that primarily follows Rowena Faye, a young girl with no magic, and Penalynn Graft, her Scholastic master who shuns magic by choice. Together, they work to uncover the root of magic: the bond linking humans to Shadows.

The most I can say about the major themes of this book (without spoiling the story for new readers) is that they include truth, identity, new beginnings, and the power of perspective.

While I would largely describe this enjoyable novel as a slowly unfurling tale, the ending is full of so many surprisingly fast-paced and unexpected twists and turns that I was left eagerly awaiting Robinson’s sequel to Shadowless—and I am positive the same could be said of anyone who reads this book!

Wow, what to say about this SPECTACULAR book!? I really had no idea what was in store for me when I picked this up to begin reading, but I am SO glad that I did! Seriously, this storytelling was fantastic!
The depth of thought, emotion and conversational presentation between characters was engrossing. The diversity of personalities kept me bouncing on my toes with delight. The settings and action sequences flowed seamlessly from the page, straight to my mind’s eye. Honestly, this writing was so good. It somehow managed to achieve an immersive descriptiveness, without an excess of wordiness, which kept me fully engaged in the events of the story and oh-so-reluctant to set aside this storyworld for the real one.
Shadowless was the perfect blend of mystery and impending danger, feeling and heartfelt moments, twists, shocks, and even a good chuckle scattered here and there throughout the telling. I loved the allegorical aspect, allowing my mind the side objective of digging into and picking apart the implications of various elements of the story in order to figure out the deeper meaning. Absolutely phenomenal!
And that EXPLOSION of a climax toward the end!!! So many unexpected events in quick succession left me stunned, to say the least! This novel is definitely up there as one of my favorite reads of the year so far. It was soooo good!
So glad to have gotten this from the publisher and been able to share my thoughts!
