Historical Fiction
Review:
This is the coming of age story of Daisy a young American girl, heir to her family’s department store who is given an apprenticeship with Coco Chanel in Paris just before WWII. She starts as a young innocent girl who quickly has to grow up as she is faced with the horrors of war and becomes a strong young woman with a strong sense of justice. The book is well written and very captivating; once I started I found it hard to put it down. The main character is fictional but a lot of the other characters are based on real life historical figures and facts, which appear to be well researched and are nicely interwoven in the story. This added an extra dimension to the plot and made the story more interesting.
Overall:
A story that is both interesting and captivating, well written and the characters are portrayed realistic. I enjoyed reading it. .

Daisy is turning 18 in the most glamourous and magical city in Europe, Paris. Whilst away from her native America with her beloved grandmother, Daisy could never have guessed the birthday present and the life that would now open up to her. As Daisy navigates a most prestigious apprenticeship with a fashion icon, war is flooding Europe. What once were streets of art, love and freedom were segregating and dividing, made even more problematic by two very different men, from different sides of the war but both holding a space in Daisy's heart.
Stardust is a story of love during uncertainty and taking nothing for granted and standing for what you know to be right and maybe not everyone is what they appear. It evokes a tapestry of emotion with first love and visceral loss as well as capturing the care free days of finding your place in the world whilst showing unwavering morality. Paris life is not all cocktails and cigarettes.
This is not my typical genre however I soon fell in love with the setting, the characters and the writing. The character development was great, initially I wasn't drawn to Daisy, feeling that she was over privileged, however her first empathic encounter with Hanna soon change my opinion. I am unsure how much of the historical points were factual, however they were well written and respectful. I felt it really added to the pace of the story and kept me turning the page. The descriptions of the landscape were excellent and transformative. I could smell the No. 5 through the pages.
For my first dabble with historical romance, I loved it. I am not a fashion fan but it remained accessible and made a wonderful back drop for Daisy's journey. I would highly recommend and whilst it is part of a series, it was perfect as a stand alone. I will be reading the rest of the series very soon.
A fascinating and challenging insight into the decadent lifestyle of the rich in Paris between the wars. Book 2 in The American Songbook series is easily read as a standalone. Rose O'Neill is the founder of the Kavenaugh department store in Manhattan, and she intends to open a store in Paris, the fashion capital of the world. She also intends that her grandaughter Daisy Blakely to be her successor. Daisy is eighteen, and for her birthday, she is taken on a tour and scouting mission to the French capital. Daisy is enchanted with the city and overwhelmed to find that her Gran has arranged for her to be groomed in the world of fashion by none other than Coco Chanel! It is 1938, and life in Europe is one of glitz and luxury for the privileged but rapidly deteriorating for the Jews, and certain others as Fascism and extremism are taking hold throughout the continent. Rumours of war are growing, as Hitlers Germany is spreading its wings and its poison. Daisy falls for a handsome doctor at The American, a charity hospital, where she is being patched up after a fall at the Chanel store. Her family back home pleads with her to return as the invasion of France is imminent, but she refuses to flee Europe, and her life is turned upside down. Her position at the high society store brings her into contact with the famous and the infamous, and she has to make decisions that will change her life forever. A tale of intrigue, heroism, tragedy, and self-sacrifice during the darkest period of world history. It is very well researched and eloquently written and a stark reminder for the modern-day rise in extreme governments.
Action Packed, Evocative WWII Atmosphere Stardust by Hope C Tarr starts as heiress Daisy Blakely arrives in Paris with her beloved grandmother to celebrate her 18th birthday. The year is 1938, war is just a rumor, and Coco Chanel is very good friends with Grandmother Rose who owns a chain of high-end Department stores based in New York. Daisy falls in love with the City of Lights and culture, with the Chanel fashion empire where she persuades Rose to let her serve a year as an apprentice, and her happiness is complete when she meets and falls in love with Jean-Claude Jacobs, a Jewish surgeon. Inevitably the outbreak of war changes everything. Daisy’s family beg her to return to New York, but she joins the resistance and stays in Paris. Her life becomes dangerous, she does not know who to trust, Jean-Claude is taken by the Gestapo and pronounced dead. A German soldier, Fritz, targetted by Daisy so she can steal secrets, becomes a dear friend who causes her to question how she can tell friend from foe. Daisy emerges from occupation and the war years as a very different person. This might seem to be a simple story line, but any reader will find it fast-paced, plenty of action, and amazingly evocative of the complicated and harsh life in occupied Paris. I thoroughly recommend this book to keep the reader permanently in suspense wondering how each situation will be resolved, who will survive. The incredibly unanticipated ending took me completely by surprise.
1938 Paris and Daisy Blakely is given an extraordinary birthday present by her grandmother She will be staying in Paris for at least 6 months but the cherry on top of the cake...she will be an apprentice for Coco Chanel. As the heiress to her grandmother's famous department store, Daisy will be learning the ins and outs of the fashion world, the world of haute couture. However, Daisy will be learning much more.; she will be learning about love. There will be two men in her life, Jean-Claude Jacobs a Jewish doctor she met in the emergency room at the American Hospital and another, a young German soldier whose name is Fritz. While she is drawn to both men, she knows Fritz is an enemy of France as war is looming. As the German soldiers march into Paris, Daisy realizes Fritz is not what he seemed to be at their first meeting. With the background of Paris at war, Daisy matures as she leaves her world of innocence trusting her instincts while becoming strong and helping with the resistance. This novel has everything you would enjoy in a book about WWII. We learn about the fashion world as well as the world of Coco Chanel. Highly recommended. My thanks to NetGalley for this ARC in exchange for an honest opinion.
This was a really interesting read. I loved the setting and the descriptions of Daisy's time in Paris before and after Germanys invasion.
World War 2 always fascinates me. I think the author has done a great job of mixing facts with fiction with a fast-paced story and an interesting set of characters.
I liked Daisy and her growth throughout the story. From friendships, loves, and loyalties, she develops into a fierce and determined woman who will do anything to help those in danger of the Nazis.
With her story of coming from New York to Paris to work for Coco Chanel, it piqued my interest in the fashion icon. I had no idea of her background and her connection with the Nazis!
I thought the writing style was enjoyable to read with its pace, tensions, and twist and turns to keep the story flowing.
Thank you to Hygge Book tours and the author for a copy of the book to read and review.
I'm reviewing this as part of a tour with Hygge Book Tours.
“If Paris - and Chanel - had taught me anything it was to be entirely myself without explanation or apology.”
The story begins in Paris in 1938. Eighteen-year-old Daisy travels to Paris with her grandmother, who introduces her to fashion designer Coco Chanel. Following this, Daisy becomes an apprentice.
At the start, I enjoyed the atmosphere of Paris, and the air of glamour, thinking how wonderful it might be to have an opportunity like Daisy had. I felt there was a lot of character development throughout the story, as Daisy's journey became about so much more than what she initially set out to do. I didn't understand the title until a little later on. This turned out to be an emotional and inspiring read, with romance, some tearjerker moments, and some moments that warmed my heart.
Thank you to Hygge Book Tours, Joffe Books, and to the author, for the opportunity to read and review this.
We have a gorgeous setting in Paris, I absolutely love Paris it's one of my favourite places. Quick paced, and straight in there, packed full. Daisy Blakely arrives in Paris, as an apprentice to the renowned coco chanel, enchanted by the beauty and glamour, Daisy's life is a whirlwind, but she meets stunning doctor Jean-Claude, who relights her happiness. Everything is happy until the Germans approach the city, Daisy and Jean-Claude join the resistance, but Daisy is soon to be shocked when Jean-Claude is taken by the Gustapo. Daisy's life becomes in danger but can she get into the Nazi regime before time runs out? Such a beautiful story, and it's been a pleasure reading
Hope Tarr's latest, the second in her American Songbook Series, is set in Paris on the eve of the Second World War. Daisy, granddaughter to the protagonist of the first book in the series, is in Paris for a birthday trip when she learns that not only has her grandmother treated her to a dress from Coco Chanel's iconic boutique, but she's arranged for Daisy to intern with Chanel herself. (Since Daisy is slated to take over the family's New York department store, Kavanaugh's, and to open a Paris branch, this is by way of preparing her for her future.) Daisy falls in love with Paris and with an idealistic Jewish doctor, and as the Germans invade the city, her journey has just begun.
A good read. Follow Daisy on her journey to France to embark on her dreams. Her Grandmother arranges for Daisy to gain work experience. Working closely amongst her fashion idol. What starts out as a job of a lifetime becomes a life she has always wished for. This life comes with a few bumps in the road. Her life begins to change and she is faced with uncertainty. This allows her to grow into the woman her Grandmother would be proud off. A tale of danger, courage, friendship and love. A really enjoyable read. With plenty of drama.
A very different viewpoint of life in Paris just prior to and throughout WW2 and the invasion of Paris. I really enjoyed reading of Daisy's extraordinary young life. It really brought home to me the highs and lows Parisians endured at that time. Her life was torn in two, not just by men but also by wartime life. The book was romantic, heart rending, light hearted and tragic. I couldn't put it down! I was given this early in exchange for an honest review which this is.
Hope Tarr's STARDUST introduces us to Daisy Blakely, an Irish American department store heiress, who chooses to resist and fight injustice in Nazi-occupied Paris. Fans of WWII fiction will be transported to the city of light at its best and worst, from the glamor of the Ritz, to the horrors of war, in this memorable novel dripping in the scent of the Chanel No. 5.
I loved this book. Such an amazing way to read about the war from different point of views. Daisy is such a strong admirable character that grows a lot over the course of this book. This book was such an easy book to read and had you rooting for the good guys and upset when things didn’t go their way. Loved the ending.
Again, what a good book! This book is an interconnected standalone, and you can tell the author did such an amazing job researching historical figures and developing this plot. Only really I gave this a 4 start vs 5 is because the mission for her uncle was a little boring.
I enjoyed this book, though it was difficult to read. I didn't know much about the German occupation of France, this really opened my eyes. The characters were sympathetic and well defined and some of the plot a little contrived, but for the most part and interesting book
A romance novel ser in WWII Paris. a young woman from a wealthy New York family goes to Paris before the war and is an apprentice to Coco Chanel. Lots of insider gossip about Chanel and the Resistance.
An exciting tale of life in Paris before and during WW11 for an American young woman. The horror of that time is expressed vividly along side working for the resistance and falling in love.
I loved ready Stardust with it’s twists and turns during WW II. The characters are strong and willing to do whatever it takes to free France and it’s people from the tyranny of the Nazis occupying Paris and much of France,
I read Irish Eyes first and absolutely loved it so I knew I would adore Stardust as well, and I did. Stardust was riveting for me! I will never forget it.
I loved this book. It had so many twists and turns. The story was informative as well as a piece of history. I had a hard time putting this book down. Linda b.
This book was so beautifully written. It was emotional and sweet and inspiring. For me personally, I learned a lot about life in Europe during the war.
