Rate this book
With the resignation of Vice President Brenda Jackson imminent, America is in need of a replacement – and President Schumacher knows just the right man for the job. But the political opposition isn't going to let FBI Director Ty Stubblefield become the next in line to the presidency without a fight. With too much at stake, Congressman Richard LeCocq uses his position on the Intelligence Committee to help his party expose Director Stubblefield's tactics in the war on terror, including his use of the FBI's secret Phantom team.

But LeCocq has other reasons for leaking the classified information. His campaign for New York City mayor crumbling under the weight of numerous scandals, the embattled LeCocq is in desperate need of cash. Radical jihadists looking for revenge see the opportunity and offer to fill LeCocq's campaign coffers in exchange for information on the FBI's elite strike force, and LeCocq cannot resist the temptation. When members of the Phantom team start showing up dead, it's up to Special Agent D.A. "Duke" Schiffer to hunt down the terrorists and bring them to justice. But with Director Stubblefield next in the crosshairs, whether he becomes the new Vice President or the next victim depends on whether Agent Schiffer can uncover the plot and stop the killers in time.

After discovering Rob Shumaker’s political thriller series, I cannot get enough. With the resignation of the vice-president, President Andrew Schumacher needs a second-in-command. This is easier said than done, though he has the perfect candidate for the job. A covert set of agents within the FBI are being killed, one by one, leaving its Director worried about the fallout. All the while a bitter race for mayor of New York City has all eyes on the Big Apple. What’s to come and how will it all play out? Shumaker sets the scene for a thrilling novel with a perfect ending.

The resignation of Vice President Brenda Jackson has everyone talking in DC. President Andrew Schumacher is sad to see her go for personal reasons but he must move on and has the perfect candidate. FBI Director Ty Stubblefield has been a friend and colleague of theThe president’s for many years, which makes him idea for the role of veep. However, he has his enemies on Capitol Hill, many of whom are coming out of the woodwork to make their opposition known.

One of those opposition politicians is Congressman Richard LeCocq, member of the Intelligence Committee and in the middle of a play for the mayor’s office in NYC. Congressman LeCocq is ready to use his contacts to undercut Director Stubblefield however he can, including revealing the presence of a secret group within the FBI, known as the Phantom Team.

With his campaign struggling, LeCocq will use whatever advantages he can to help lessen the stink of scandals that surround him. When he is approached by a rich donor, LeCocq leaps at the chance to line his pockets by sharing the identities of the Phantom Group to a jihadist. One by one, the agents begin being killed, pressuring Director Stubblefield to come clean about it all, and making his position of vice-president less tenable. In DC, nothing is a done deal until it’s complete, leaving many to wonder what will happen and how the murders will work to help one campaign as they torpedo another. One member of the Phantoms will have to hunt down the killers to ensure the secret is not fully uncovered, while protecting his boss at the same time. A chilling thriller that has all the elements needed to make for a stunning story.

I love political thrillers that build from one to the other, which Rob Shumaker has been able to do effectively. Strong writing leads a solid narrative throughout this piece. Shumaker presents plausible scenarios and adds a political flavour to keep things on edge. Shumaker keeps the tension high before resolving things effectively and forcing the reader to linger with questions. Characters develop throughout the series, some of whom prove likeable, while others are as sinister as they come. In a partial turn away from terror-based writing, Shumaker kept things more America-centred, which is something that I have been wanting for a while.

The political landscape is once more at the centre of this book, with plot points evolving to deliver a great story. The reader is left wondering about the direction and must stay attuned to all that is going on. Political machinations are present from start to end, with a few sub-plots building from book to book. Working with the element of political surprise, Shumaker does well to present the reader with a credible and yet surprising piece. This helps me push forward with this series being, as I have no interest in stopping anytime soon.

Kudos Mr. Shumaker, for a strong homegrown political thriller that has me needing more.

Corruption.

I tense thriller, city, state and capital are full of corrupt egotistical people. Money and more money gets them there, and they don't even blink to sell their country for the donations.

good read, lots of action

After reading the first 6 in this series, it was pretty predictable but I still enjoyed the book and especially the politics of the president and new vp.

Another great one for the series. I keep reading these and can't wait for the next book. I guess I'm a glutton for punishment.
