An oblivious prince wishes for his knight in shining armor. His knight has been under his nose all along, will he claim him before it's too late for them both? As deeply as he craves his own fairy tale happily-ever-after, resort owner Cody Prescott doesn't have time for a relationship. That doesn't stop him from crushing on most men on Piedras. Luckily for him, they're emotionally unavailable or already taken, so he doesn't have to worry about getting attached.
Wade Buckner, the island's handiest handyman, is tired of waiting for Cody to wake up and realize Wade is the man for the job. He's ready and willing to rescue Cody from just about anything, even questionable hotel guests.
The Harvest Feast is the kick-off for the resort's one hundred and twenty-fifth anniversary and they have a full house. But something sinister is afoot at the resort, something that even his knight might not be able to rescue Cody from.
Are they trying to kill him, put him out of business, or both?

The Real Thing, book five in the West Coast Forensics series, is dual POV and follows Cody and Wade all the way to their happy ending. Can be read as a standalone but might be better enjoyed if you start with Real Trouble, first in the WCF series.
Elle Keaton is a writer, avid reader, and amateur cat-wrangler. Her love of romance novels has led her to a life of creating her own happy ever afters. She is the author of the best selling series' Shielded Hearts and Veiled Intentions. Keaton hails from the Pacific Northwest, where she lives with her husband and cats.
Decent but their hookup/romance kinda just went from 0/them thinking the other didn’t have feelings for the other to 100/nice hookup session out of nowhere haha
Besides the romance issue, the “mystery” was entertaining; was it the best I’ve read no, but it kept me engaged.
Cody is a lump of sweetness that is far too rare a find. He is being tried now... an out-of-control thunderstorm, several actual murders, an attempted murder, a kidnapping, lots of steam, and not all on the good side, along with a hidden attraction and humor...all happening in Cody’s hotel...and he is not happy about it AT ALL. Furthermore, he is not putting up with it...not for one more minute. The hotel is full of guests and Cody is dealing with something that he had once thought a good idea...the Harvest Feast, as well as the Historical Societies and a wedding with the wedding planner from Hell. Wade, the resort’s handyman is interested in and wants Cody just as much as Cody wants him, but neither one is aware of the other's feelings, that is until things start to get weird and complicated. This is the fifth book in the series, and unless we fans can convince Elle to write #6, it will probably be the last in this series. it can be read as a stand-alone, but it is definitely worth reading the entire series. I think they cover could have been better.
This last in the series is about resort owner Cody and hot handyman Wade. It felt kind of a cosy mystery at the resort on Piedras. This series has been the perfect read this summer and I've got no idea what to read now.
I enjoyed Cody and Wade's story because it read differently than all other books in the series. Yes, there's the crime aspect of the story and the romance, but in this installment we have sweet Cody starring as an amateur sleuth investigating the happenings at his resort.
I loved Wade and his broody ways. 😏 I've always been curious about Cody and his story. Getting to know Wade was a surprise because he seemed the opposite of Cody--with his attitude and overall grumpiness. But the more I read, the more I was intrigued by him. I couldn't wait to see when the sparks between Cody and Wade finally ignited and when it did it was hawt!
I also enjoyed catching up with some of the past couples and seeing them still close with one another.
I started this series with the third book, which I really loved, and liked all the books since then. Including this one.
Cole is such a sweet character, a bit nerdy, a bit clumsy and a really big heart. After meeting him, you just have to like him. Wade is the typical grumpy jack and you just have to like him for that.
They rely on each other without really realising how much. I really enjoyed their story and how they finally confess to each other what everyone around them already knows.
The mystery is nicely done but definitely not the star of this book.
I would have liked to see more of the previous couples from book 3 and 4 but that's just me
All in all a sweet romance which I thoroughly enjoyed.
An ARC was provided by GRR and I am happy to give my honest opinion 😊
DNF. There is so much wrong with this. Sloppy edited. Cody swooning for pretty much EVERY man but for some reason thinking Wade is unavailable. Wade into Cody but not giving him any signs. Finally hooking up and all of a sudden Wade thinks this has no future (why?). Too much unnecessary information (do I need to know the names of all 15 guest rooms?). People acting (very) unrealistic. ...
I usually do not rate books I did not finish. I do make exceptions for the noteworthy ones ;-)
There’s a lot to like about this story. Among my favorite things:
The setting. The Brooch is great: who doesn’t love a resort where all the appliances have “character” and yet somehow the fact that everything is one minor disaster away from toppling somehow adds to rather than detracts from the charm. It’s the perfect place for a workplace romance turned mystery with more than its share of intrigue and peril.
Cody. He’s a disaster muppet of sunshine who is both ridiculous and ridiculously competent and I like everything about him, but especially how much he wants to help people and how devoted he is to his family business.
The chance to see characters from previous works the author has set in this world. There are some familiar faces here, and they’re lovely to see.
The stuff that didn’t work as well for me:
Wade’s storyline with his father— I don’t think years of emotional abuse goes away over a weekend, no matter how charming your son’s new boyfriend is.
The romance trajectory in general: there was room for way more emotional connection and relationship development than we get, and while I realize that there are pressing subplots to contend with, I never managed to get fully on board with their dynamic, which shifts super quickly. Still, there’s an HEA and all’s well that ends well: overall, I found this to be an enjoyable read.
*I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book.
GUHHHH this might be my favorite of all the West Coast Forensics books so far. *heart eyes*
Oh, Cody! Oh, Wade! I just want to smoosh their stupid heads together and say "NOW KISS." The intense amount of mutual pining is painfully delicious. They're total opposites (very much a grumpy/sunshine romance!) but in a way that means they compliment each other perfectly. And then they both are pining after the other thinking there's no way he'd ever look at me, he deserves so much better, when the only thing each of them wants is the other. UGH, just gutted. The chemistry between them is fire and they're definitely my favorite couple of the series (which has a lot of really great couples!)
This is the fifth book in the West Coast Forensics series. While it could *technically* be read as a stand-alone, I recommend reading at least the first book in the Veiled Intentions series (Conspiracy Theory) as well as the other West Coast Forensics books - you'll just appreciate Cody so much more that way, haha! There are also a LOT of characters, so if you jump right in with this one you'll likely feel a bit lost.
I love this series and I absolutely adored Cody and Wade! There’s never a dull moment on Piedras island, as we have learned from the previous books in the series, but this Thanksgiving week at the Brooch resort is especially action-packed. Death, almost-fatal attacks, things disappearing, long-lost family showing up out of the blue, there’s always something going on. Amidst al the chaos we have Cody and Wade coming to terms with their feelings for each other; wavering between denial, longing, more denial and full-on love, these two are the poster definition for the term “emotional rollercoaster”. Great story, wonderful narration, and a fast pace writing made this book a page-turner, or, in my case, a listen-in-one-setting story!
I love when there is mutual pining and both people are like, NO HE WOULD NEVER THINK OF ME LIKE THAT. IT'S HOPELESS. but then it's not in fact hopeless.
I enjoyed Cody & Wade's story a lot. The mystery added an interesting element to the story as we followed them finally accepting their feelings for each other.
Update: I enjoyed listening to the audiobook for this just as much as I enjoyed reading it. I always enjoy listening to Michael Dean.
Reviewed for Love Bytes – 4.5 hearts Wade was a grumpy soul who would have left Piedras months ago if it hadn’t been for Cody, the owner of the Brooch resort. Cody recruited Wade as the handyman and has since worked his way into Wade’s heart. But Wade was under the impression that, on a personal level, Cody didn’t realize he existed. Cody’s dream is to have a boyfriend, but the resort takes up all his time. Cody loved making Wade snarl - the sound made his body react. Wade had no idea how his army background and pull-yourself-together attitude often kept Cody from falling apart. Then weird things happen that need the sheriff’s department. But that doesn’t stop Cody from doing some sleuthing and getting into situations that need a handyman. The Real Thing is the fifth story of the West Coast Forensics series and one that is a bit different from the others – in a good way. Instead of touring the island, everything centers around the Brooch Resort which has been on the peripherals of every story in the WCF books, so it was lovely to see it in the limelight. I have thoroughly enjoyed the world created on Piedras, and it would have been tempting to get sidelined by giving all the characters their airtime. But I must give kudos to the author for keeping the focus on Cody and Wade. The story is a slow burn, but that allows feature characters from other books in the series to make an appearance and their characteristics to make an impression. Still, they aren’t allowed to overshadow the journey of the main protagonists. The story is told in the third person from the viewpoints of Wade and Cody. Worldbuilding is extensive, and it has also built up over each book. Though I connected to this story early, because I work in a hotel and related to the situational experiences between employees and guests – they are on-point, and I couldn’t help smiling at the parallels – superb. Cody is everywhere dealing with guests and holding the place together, with his trusted handyman at his side. Wade is the yang to Cody’s yin - opposites that fit. Both have family histories that make an appearance, and both take different journeys in the story. These two arcs provide the soul and entertainment of the book and cleverly kept me guessing how things would play out until the end. The story reminded me of one of those classic crime novels with the name of ‘Murder At…’. The roles Cody and Wade have, mean that mortal danger isn’t necessarily a daily occurrence like the blue light services depicted in the other books of the series, which in many ways gives The Real Thing a more personal, intimate touch – one that I greatly enjoyed. This book was provided free in exchange for a fair and honest review for Love Bytes.
Piedras island local, Wade Buckner is as grumpy as they come but he's a lifesaver for Cody Prescott with his ability to fix any problems the resort owner has. Cody loves his resort, The Brooch and has poured his heart and soul into revitalising his family's legacy. It would be easier if things would stop breaking but as long as he has Wade, he knows it'll be alright. And if they could only sort out their feelings for one another, then everyone else would finally have some peace from the longing looks and wishful remarks.
I adored this. The island of Piedras is full of distinct and vibrant characters who have built strong friendships with a side of teasing and I was rating it. I have to say it really wasn't what I was expecting. I haven't read the other books in the series and going by the series name alone I was expecting more crime and forensic investigation. This wasn't that - so I'm not entirely sure where that bit came in but it was good nonetheless. And there was mystery and investigation but more along the cosy mystery line than romantic suspense or crime fiction.
Cody was hilarious. I loved his bright happy attitude to life and his snarky inner voice when things went wrong. His determination to solve the crime simply for his resort not to go under was amusing and made for a fun read. Wade was a gruff outer shell with a gooey inner center and his feelings for Cody were adorable. It wasn't all fluff though, the chemistry between them burned hot and the sex was explosive.
Plus I loved the relationship progression between Wade and his dad, Ray. I felt sorry that they had so many years of misunderstandings and hurt feelings and grief but I was glad they managed to find a middle ground and work towards getting to know one another again. As far as the mystery - the plot wasn't anything that hasn't been done before but it gave a bit of flavour to the romance.
One thing I was really impressed with was the character profiles index at the back of the book. The author detailed who everyone was, who their love interest will be and laid out which book their story was told in! Why don't more authors do this?! Considering this was my first Elle Keaton book, I was super happy to see a straightforward layout of how I could read the rest and where I could find them if I wanted to. A basic reading order is provided on her website - but this index was much better.
Overall, a fun lighthearted romance with a bit of mystery and likeable characters, I'll definitely be reading more of this author. 3.5 stars, rounded to 4 stars.
I am a fan of this series and have been looking forward to this audiobook, which is about Cody and Wade. Cody has put a lot of work and love into his resort, but this Thanksgiving weekend nothing is as it should be. There are strange guests at the resort, then supposed relatives show up all of a sudden, and even the weather won't allow them to get back to the mainland from Piedras Island. I really like the author's writing style and was able to get into the story very quickly. Cody is too busy for a relationship, but he doesn't see that Wade would be the man for him. These two were really hot together and amusing at times. But it takes time for them to be able to stand by their feelings. Which means an emotional roller coaster ride is bound to happen. On the one hand there is the longing, but then again denial is announced and then the jump in the change of the relationship was almost a little too fast for me.
In the middle of all the relationship chaos, a person dies. Was it a natural death or a murder? Shortly thereafter, the next unexplained incident occurs and it is more than questionable whether the victim survives. Who is doing his mischief on the resort? And what is the motive? And then things start disappearing. I really enjoyed this story. The crime case was interesting, the main protagonists also and the writing pace also contributes to the fact that I was very quickly captivated by the story and have listened to the audiobook in one go through.
Micheal Dean did a fantastic job as always. It is always a pleasure for me to listen to his varied and emotional performance.
M/M Grumpy/sunshine Work romance Boss/employee Forced proximity
This is book 5 but it can be read as a standalone. I have read and loved the previous books before but it's been long enough that I didn't remember anything and I wasnt lost at all.
I loved both of the main characters. They were opposites and balanced each other out perfectly. They had scortching hot chemistry. Cody was sweet. Always overworking and helping others. Wade had a troubled family history and then joined the military, choosing to keep moving and not get close to anyone. He can't help the feelings he has for Cody though. Cody is interested in Wade as well but both are clueless. I loved how protective Wade was of Cody.
Cody has a full hotel and a storm has touchdown causing Cody and Wade to have to work closer than ever and to share a room. The guests are sketchy and the events that start to happen are even more sketchy. I enjoyed the mystery aspect of this book. It was interesting enough to keep my interest from start to finish and it wasn't at all predictable IMO. This was a low angst, slow burn with medium heat and lots of external drama. The ending was really sweet.
I didnt rate it 5 stars because I thought the relationship development was very rushed, 0 to 60 physically even though emotionally it was a slow burn. The first physical scene left me confused, how it came out of nowhere. Another thing that seemed odd to me was the shift, again out of nowhere, in Rays interactions with Wade, with no sensible cause. As well there was some legality situations that were so blatantly inaccurate. I don't need to even do research to know they would never occur.
Michael Dean did a phenomenal performance as always. He expressed all the emotions wonderfully and brought the story to life. He gave all the characters distinct voices that suited each of them perfectly.
A terrible storm, murders, an attempted murder, a kidnapping, lots of steam, hidden attraction and humour and all this is happening in Cody’s hotel and he is not happy and is not putting up with it! All while the hotel is full and Cody is dealing with the Harvest Feast, Historical Societies and a wedding.
Cody has appeared in other books in the series and I’m so glad he got his own story. He is a brilliant character and there is so much more to him than I realised including a good sense of humour, often self depreciating, and I loved his inner monologues.
Although Cody is young he now owns and runs the Brooch Resort after his crooked uncle’s demise and life is not easy, money is tight, renovations are ongoing and he is tired and lonely. Even though he is surrounded by his chosen family he wants someone to share his life with.
Enter Wade a grumpy taciturn ex military guy who works at the Brooch as the handyman and keeps all the ancient amenities running and has a secret crush on Cody.
Cody has also been having lust filled fantasies about Wade and lives to wind him up and invent problems around the hotel just to spend some time with him but when the storm brings them together the heat is off the charts.
Wade has a host of problems of his own but now he has had a taste of Cody he doesn’t want to go home which is a good thing with a killer at the resort and Cody in their sights, someone watching his back is definitely a good thing!
I love all the books set on the islands and with a mix of murders, mystery and lots of gorgeous men I hope there will be lots more.
The Real Thing by Elle Keaton and narrated by Michael Dean is book 5 in the West Coast Forensics series. If you follow my reviews you know I have a great love of Michael Dean. His voice and the way his brings the characters to life makes any book worth listening to. Pair it with a well written story and it's 😘
Cody is the owner of a resort on the island of Piedras. He is young, 26, gay, sunshiny, and loves love. He is searching for his forever man, just like in the romance novels he loves to read. The 125th anniversary of the island is coming up and he decides to host a Harvest Feast. The resort is fully booked with guests and the island wouldn't the island if all things went smoothly.
Wade is the resorts handyman. Cody and Wade first met when Cody was a teen. Wade thought he was annoying but as an adult he finds him sexy and anything but annoying. Except in that Cody is flirty with everyone but Wade. Wade isn't aware of the crush that Cody has on him.
Cody and Wade, along with MCs from previous books, have to contend with making the Harvest Feast a success, a unalived man, a mystery history group, a storm that drops a tree on Wade's father's house, and a few more difficulties. There is never a dull moment on Piedras Island.
I love this series so much. I have been able to listen to all of the books. Michael Dean makes all the MCs, family, friends, and island guests come to life with unique voices and personality. Elle Keaton has done a fabulous job bringing mystery and romance together to create a fun story and series. While this book could be read/listened to as a standalone, I highly recommend giving them all a listen.
I’m a huge Elle Keaton fan, and every time I see her audios be released, I do a little happy dance. I listened to the first three West Coast Forensics books, missed book 4, and just finished listening to book 5. I didn’t miss anything by skipping a book, although I do plan to go back.
Okay, this book.
Cody and Wade.
Sigh.
I’ve adored Cody from the beginning of the series and I was thrilled he was finally getting his own book. And a swoon-worthy hero in the form of handyman Wade. Cody’s just so adorable, earnest, and hardworking. He’s dedicated to his family’s resort on Piedras Island, in the San Juan islands off the coast of Washington. The rugged landscape makes a fantastic backdrop for the various mysteries – including murders.
So when someone turns up dead at the resort, Cody’s worried about their reputation. Except it looks like a natural death, so he doesn’t stress too much. He’s got the Harvest Festival. And the pesky attraction to Wade who looks super sexy these days.
Wade’s got his own issues – most especially his father who won’t take care of himself and hasn’t really since Wade’s mom died years ago. Then his father is forced out of his complacency and that just complicates Wade’s life further.
Yet and Cody still find time to, you know… Sexy times abound.
Then an attempted murder takes place and things go sideways. Cody tries to keep the festival on track. Wade tries to keep Cody safe. Mayhem ensues. Just what I love!
This is a great book and a fantastic addition to the series. Oh, and Michael Dean is, as always, great in his narration. I highly recommend this listen.
🌬Neither resort woes nor stormy weather can keep them apart!
Elle Keaton's The Real Thing had a steamy romance mixed with ominous weather, danger and death stalking the resort, and a good subplot involving a father and son rebuilding a relationship that's been on the skids for too long.
Handyman extraordinaire Wade and resort hotel owner Cody are a match just waiting for a chance to combust. Cody is a ball of energy but a bit scattered; Wade is the strong, steady protector type who thinks he could never be good or fancy enough for Cody. But does anyone who knows the two agree?
The romance progresses simultaneously with an odd mix of resort guests who end up creating problems, even going so far as turning up dead. How rude! Cody turns into an amateur detective because nobody puts his beloved resort in a corner. Danger and death are not the kind of reputation he wants after all the refurbishment, sweat and tears he's put into making the resort a desirable destination and event space.
The story sets a good pace with never a dull moment, interspersing a fair number of heated scenes in with the mystery. The change in Cody and Wade's relationship seemed abrupt. I did not get that. Otherwise I really liked the plot and Cody's continued connection with dearly departed Mabel Prescott, who he is convinced still haunts and watches over the resort. And Wade and his dad: yes, their coming to terms was touching.
A fun read with a cute ending.
I read a complimentary advance copy of the book; this is my voluntary and honest opinion.
Sweet, adorable Cody finally gets his story. Cody is the owner of the Brooch, he’s hardworking, adores his staff, and will give folks the shirt off his back. He’s also a bit bumbling and clueless. But he’s not the only one that’s clueless, there’s also Wade, the handyman and all-around fix-it guru. He can’t see what’s right under his nose.
Both these adorable men have the biggest crush on the other, and they are completely oblivious to it. Cody needs Wade’s sureness and competency, and Wade is drawn to Cody’s kind nature, love, and encouragement. Together they are completely loveable.
As the busy season begins at the hotel, and the weather is kicking up, some sketchy things start happening. Thankfully they have each other to turn to as they try to keep things running while also trying to sleuth what is going on.
Loved these two. They were sweet, and the story was uplifting (you know, as uplifting as murder and kidnapping can be!). And there are lots of funny moments with the rest of the hotel crew.
Another great book in this series. It can be read as a standalone but I feel having read the other books helped to increase my enjoyment of this book. This is a bit of a grumpy/sunshine romance. This book is about Cody, the owner of the Brooch resort, and Wade, who is helping to remodel the Brooch. They have each been secretly daydreaming about the other. However, Cody thinks that Wade only sees him as a mess, and Wade thinks that Cody doesn't really see him as more that Mr Fix It and wants someone who wears expensive suits. If Wade only knew that Cody has been fantasizing about what Wade wears under his coveralls. Cody is getting ready for the Harvest Feast to celebrate the Brooch being 125 years old and is praying that nothing goes wrong. So of course, it does with one of his guests dying which sets off a chain of events that could cause the Brooch to go under. Cody is determined that's not going to happen and sets off in his best Jessica Fletcher mode to unravel the mystery. Wade is there to help him and along the way Cody finds out just what Wade is hiding under his coveralls. I love how protective Wade is of Cody and how he has no desire to change Cody. Cody is really sweet and funny and wants to help the people around him. I also really enjoyed the humor in this book. I'm looking forwards to future books.
Another fast flowing and riveting book centered in the heart of Piedras Island. This little piece of land has seen a lot of action, and each book keeps getting better. Book 5 of the West Coast Forensics could be a standalone, but seriously, this whole series is stellar.
I think I have my new favorite local. Cody Prescott owns the Brooch resort, and even though he is young in years, this feisty manager has an old soul. He loves the resort with all its flaws and unique history. He extends these close feelings to the people that work there. His staff is like an extended family, and he is so into running this establishment he does have trouble delegating. There is one staff member that stands out above the rest, and that is Ward. He seems to singlehandedly keep the Brooch running like a well oiled machine.
The interactions between the gruff repairman and ultra preppy manager were beyond adorable. I love their mixed signals, but finally, the clueless men realize there is a deep attraction. Wouldn't life be great if they could simply explore these feelings? Unfortunately, attacks on staff, the sudden death of a guest, and other unforeseen events keep getting marled in their new beginnings.
This was a sweet romance with a side of sinister. A Cody-inspired epilogue felt so right. I highly recommend this book. Happy reading.
Another good addition to this fun series!! I started reading this series with Duke and Foster’s story in Real Hazard (Book 4) and trying to work my way through the prior books. Wade and Cody were mentioned briefly in Book 4 and their story piqued my interest.
I really enjoyed the setup for this book with the whodunit mystery factor. This was definitely more plot driven than the prior book and it made it really interesting. It brought some small town quirky mystery vibes with a touch of fun romance.
Cody and Wade are a sweet pair of MCs. Cody is the bubbly, extroverted owner of a historic hotel in the island and Wade is the quiet, slightly grumpy, Mr Fix It who is helping keep the old hotel up and running. Cody is always looking out for others, finding room for someone who needs help - that he doesn’t take time for himself and I love how Wade steps in and is that person for Cody. The one who makes sure he eats a meal instead of running around the hotel. I love the introduction of Wade’s dad, Ray who seems the cranky guy but in the end, gets wrapped up in Cody’s personality and opens up. I enjoyed their HEA and loved the epilogue.
Looking forward to what’s next in the series! I’m hoping we get to see Ralph and Griffin’s story! I received an early copy of this book and this is my honest and fair review.
This was by far my favorite book of the West Coast Forensics. Although you do not have to read the first four in the series, I highly recommend them, because they are all good.
Cody is the owner and manager of the Brooch Resort on Piedras Island, and the resort is gearing up for a Harvest Feast, which is kind of like Thanksgiving. Wade is the resort's handyman and is the glue that is holding the resort together, as well as the one responsible for all the improvements that the resort belatedly needs. Cody and Wade secretly yearn for each other, and it is only when they are forced to stay in the same cabin that they finally give in to their mutual desires.
Shady dealings are afoot during the Harvest Feast. After an unexplained assaults, an untimely, albeit suspicious death, and a kidnapping, it is the job of the West Coast Forensics to solve the case.
I really liked this book. It was a slow burn, but when the spark finally ignited, it was a passionate explosion of epic proportions. The MC's chemistry was fire. Cody was absolutely adorable and I loved his tenacity and his kind heart. Wade was the grumpy yin to Cody's yang, but Wade had a pretty big heart; he just hid that part of himself. This was a great book.
I received an ARC of this book and am voluntarily leaving a review.
***Audio Review*** I’ve been enjoying audiobooks on my work commute, so when offered a chance to review The Real Thing I was in. Cody Prescott has mortgaged his future to save The Brooch, his family’s resort on Peadris Island. He just needs to get through the upcoming Harvest Weekend. I loved Cody - he’s a bit of a mess, loves Harlequin romances, and is waiting for his prince to come. He’s also sunshiny little horndog, nurturing a longtime crush on resort handyman Wade, convinced he’s not interested and out of his league… Initially I found Wade Buckner grumpy, edging towards the border of unlikable. He’s had a thing for Cody, but is convinced he’s not interested- and resents him for it. Luckily these two crazy kids clear up that miscommunication (and how 😉), which is a good thing as bodies start to pile up. It’s a fun mystery with Cody channeling his inner Jessica Fletcher. The quirky hotel guests and hints of hidden treasure keep the story moving. Wade won me over as his grumpy bear persona transformed into protective partner. It took me a bit to get used to the narrator’s cadence and staccato delivery, but I really enjoyed this well plotted story. And there’s a lighthouse! Like the romances Cody loves, this one had a HEA. And he learned sometimes knights in shining armor wear coveralls and work boots. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
I'd been hoping Cody would get his turn in the spotlight on Piedras Island. The owner/manager of the Brooch Resort has featured on the sidelines in other books in the series as the busiest, most harried guy and I always thought he deserves a good man to help ground him. Enter Wade, the resort's defacto handyman hero. Wade is a little surly on the outside, but has lots of emotions underneath…the perfect foil for Cody who absolutely wears his heart on his sleeve. Yes, they totally work as a couple for me.
This being a book set on this island obviously means murder is afoot, but there's a change of pace here. There's much less procedural investigation, much more Jessica Fletcher-style amateur sleuthing…and I'm good with that.
Where I would have liked a bit more depth, are the elements around Wade and Cody’s back stories. We get a couple of mentions about Cody’s non-existent relationship with his parents, and we do get to see more of Wade’s relationship with his father but the resolution of their issues feels a little too easy to me.
All in all, though, The Real Thing is a sweet read with a curious mystery and delivers a deserved happy ending for our guys. 4*
An ARC was provided by GRR. This is my honest review.
