Postpartum

Rate this book
Alice thought postpartum depression was her greatest challenge — until she found her husband standing over a dead woman.

Motherhood was supposed to bring Alice joy. Instead, it brought isolation, overwhelming guilt, and the creeping fear that she might harm her baby. Trapped in a penthouse with her baby, Ellie, while her husband Max works long hours, Alice feels like she’s losing her grip on reality.

Then one sleepless night, she finds Max with a dead woman in their living room. She calls the police. But they can’t find a body.

They can’t find her baby, either.

And Alice’s husband now insists that Ellie never existed. That the baby is a figment of Alice’s imagination.

Alice knows she’s not crazy.

Ellie is real. Alive.

Her husband is lying.

But why?

And where has her baby gone?

From best-selling authors Nolon King and Lauren Street, Postpartum is a standalone psychological thriller that’s perfect for fans of Freida McFadden and Nicola Sanders.

This book was a complete mind f*ck. It was so dark and twisted, the true definition of a psychological thriller. I had no idea what was true and what wasn’t. I was a step ahead for most of the book but there were so many times I was second guessing myself. This was an excellent read.

Goodreads “snobbery” used to mean you could trust a four-star rating. It signalled that a book had passed the test of exacting, discerning readers.

This novel’s 4-star average does not live up to that legacy.

You can honestly skip the first five chapters.

The writing leans into a heavily stylised, almost literary register that doesn’t quite land:

'The door became a bulwark between life and an abyss, his hammering fists the harbingers of a threat that had once pledged to protect and cherish her ...'

This tone dominates the opening, but from chapter six the plot picks up and becomes genuinely engaging, offering some reward for perseverance. The reveal however, comes with lapses in logic.

Let's bring back Goodreads standards.

Thank you NetGalley and Sterling & Stone for a review copy of this book.

The book Post Partum is heartbreaking, gut wrenching and touching, all at the same time. At first, I didn’t think I liked it (like 5% into it) but someone told me to push through and I’m glad I did. The majority of the book I was heartbroken for Alice. And as it moved through I grew to cheer for her and her tenacity as a mother! Had my heart RACING!!! There are some editing errors that I had to ignore but don’t pay attention to that and read it! I wouldn’t read it if you’ve had any struggles with post partum depression/ anxiety/ psychosis etc

Post partum- I could not put this down! The story was full of twists from the start right until the end you think you are starting to piece together what Alice is suffering from.. PND or is it post partum psychosis? is her baby really dead? This book will keep you guessing and when you think you have it pieced together, another twist! The story will keep you gripped until the very end to find out Alices truth!

Post Partum by Nolon King and Lauren Street is a gripping psychological thriller that delves into the fragile state of the mind during one of life’s most vulnerable periods. From the moment you encounter the title, it promises an emotionally charged and intense ride—and the story more than delivers.

The novel masterfully captures the intricate ways the mind can distort reality when grappling with emotional and psychological upheaval. The authors paint a vivid and deeply empathetic picture of postpartum struggles, illustrating how isolation, self-doubt, and fear can spiral without a strong support system. The central character’s journey is both heart-wrenching and inspiring, as she battles to find her way out of the darkness and back to herself.

The strength of Post Partum lies in its ability to balance an intimate exploration of mental health with a tightly woven, suspenseful narrative. Twists and turns are seamlessly embedded into the story, keeping readers on the edge of their seats while still remaining grounded in the emotional reality of the protagonist’s experience. The sense of vulnerability and the need for trustworthy, supportive relationships are recurring themes that resonate deeply.

King and Street excel in creating a protagonist whose struggles feel raw and real, evoking a deep sense of empathy from the reader. The suspense builds steadily, culminating in moments of revelation that are both shocking and satisfying. The emotional stakes are high, and the journey is as much about survival as it is about self-discovery and healing.

For readers who appreciate a thriller with psychological depth and emotional resonance, Post Partum is a standout. It’s a story that lingers in your mind, not just for its shocking twists but for its honest and poignant portrayal of mental health struggles during a critical time in a person’s life.

With its compelling storyline, emotional depth, and unexpected twists, Post Partum is a powerful and unforgettable read that will leave you thinking long after the final page.

💡 Trauma, Truth, and the Tightrope of Motherhood

Postpartum isn't just a thriller—it’s an excavation. Nolon King and Lauren Street tear into the mythos of maternal instinct and psychological recovery with surgical precision. What emerges isn’t a neat morality tale but a haunting portrait of unraveling, stitched together with dread and compassion.

The story revolves around Penny—new mother, trauma survivor, unreliable narrator. Through her eyes, the familiar postpartum experience becomes an emotional labyrinth: sleepless nights aren't just exhausting—they're sinister. The lines between real danger and mental disintegration blur like wet ink on a hospital chart.

King and Street excel at building tension in silence. It’s not the thunderclap of horror but the creeping unease—the bottle left unwashed, the monitor blinking oddly, the baby’s cry too sharp or too long. Each moment feels slightly wrong. And that’s exactly the point.

🧠 A Psychological Ecosystem

The brilliance of this novel lies in its refusal to simplify Penny’s suffering. Postpartum depression isn't framed as a one-note affliction but a complicated state of mind shaped by past trauma, social isolation, and internalized guilt. The narrative suggests that healing isn’t linear—and survival isn’t always pretty.

Supporting characters aren’t window dressing. They orbit Penny’s story with conflicting motives, leaving readers unsure who to trust. Is her husband protective or controlling? Are the doctors dismissive or simply overworked? Everyone plays a part in the machinery that fails women at their most vulnerable.

🔍 Postpartum is not a comforting read—it’s a necessary one. With sharp prose and psychological depth, King and Street force us to consider how we listen to women, how we define recovery, and how we confront trauma that doesn’t present itself neatly. It lingers, like the scent of antiseptic and regret.

Alice is drowning in postpartum depression after the birth of her daughter, Ellie. Trapped in a penthouse day after day with a newborn, isolated while her husband works long hours, she believes the suffocating monotony is the worst of it… that is until she finds Max standing over a dead body. From there, her world fractures. Max insists that Alice is imagining things and even claims that Ellie never existed at all. As Alice’s grip on reality begins to unravel, readers are pulled into her dizzying spiral of doubt, fear, and psychological manipulation.

This book is a mindbender! The twists are constant, sharp, and destabilizing, leaving you unsure what (or who) to trust until the very end. Fast-paced and unnervingly immersive, Postpartum offers a raw, honest look at the emotional and mental struggles women face after giving birth—layered inside a nightmare of gaslighting, paranoia, and carefully constructed lies.

An intense, twisty, emotionally heavy read… this was a strong first experience with this co-author duo and I can’t wait to read more from them.

This book was not for me. It’s written like bad fanfiction; horrible unnatural dialogue, constant long boring descriptions (mostly of interior design), and a plot with more holes than plot. It seems like nobody bothered to edit this one. Through the ARC review process I was able to let the publisher know about the typos and continuity errors, but there are far more instances of major errors in need of the type of editing that goes beyond what an ARC reader can or should provide.

I can see this being a fun book for somebody who doesn’t care about good writing and just wants a light thrill, as long as you can get past the boring beginning to the part where there’s some sort of psychological confusion going on.

I thought the authors had a brief moment of success in the middle of the book when they managed to make the false narrative more convincing than the real narrative, and if they could have kept that cool confusion/misdirection going for more than a chapter or two I would have added another star to this review. Unfortunately, as it is, this book bored me instead of scaring me and had sloppy writing from start to finish.

Thanks to Net-Galley and Sterling & Stone for providing this ARC in exchange for an honest review.

Alice has been struggling after the recent birth of her daughter, Ellie. She cannot sleep and feels like she is getting nothing right. Her husband, Max, works long hours so she constantly feels alone. During one of her sleepless nights, Alice finds Max with a dead woman in their living room. She calls the police but they cannot find the body. Ellie is also gone. Max tells Alice that Ellie was not real. That Alice was imagining Ellie after losing her during birth. But Alice knows that Ellie is real.

This was a pretty twisted read! I did not know who to believe or where the story was heading. This was my first read by this author duo, and it definitely will not be my last. It was really hard putting this one down and I enjoyed all the twists and turns. The authors did an excellent job at showing how fragile our minds truly are. Finished this one in a day as I could not put it down.

Post Partum is a gripping and addictive psychological thriller that had me completely mind f*cked. Throughout the entire book I couldn't tell what was real, what was not, who was telling the truth and who was not. Although this novel explores postpartum depression, mental health and isolation, it also brings a level of suspense that just kept me flipping those pages late into the night.

Alice was a very raw and realistic feeling character so it was easy to grow attached and empathize towards her. Her struggles, her emotions, everything was valid. The plot unraveled at the perfect speed unveiling twists that left me shocked and turns that made my head spin.

Overall, this was an addictive psychological thriller that kept me hooked. Fans of the genre mixed in with emotional depth will definitely enjoy this one!

I have finally learned when it comes to stories by Nolon King and Lauren Street, don't try and figure out where they're going with it because it will only frustrate you. Because wherever you think they're going,. you're wrong. So, not only is our MC here being gaslighted (we think) are we the readers being gaslighted, too? I'll never tell. This story has more twists and turns than one can keep up with, unexpected heroes/heroines, characters you would like to throw down a garbage chute, and ones that make you believe in goodness again. And whatever you do,. try not to be interrupted when you start the last 1/3 of the book. You will be very irritated if you have to put it down. Just hang on to your hat!
I received a review copy from the authors via Sterling & Stone Publishing and this review reflects my honest and voluntary opinion.

Post partum by Nolson king with Lauren street is a wild ride of a book that keeps you guessing at every turn.

Alice thought postpartum depression was her biggest hurdle until she found her husband standing over a dead woman. She calls the police but they can't find a body...they also can't find her baby. Now Alice's husband insists that Ellie never existed and that Alice has made her up. That her baby died during childbirth. Trapped on a penthouse with her baby Ellie and her husband max who worked long hours. Alice felt like she was beginning to loose her grip on reality.

This book messed with my head in the best way! Definitely want to read more from this duo! Huge thank you to Nolson King and Lauren Street for partnering with NetGalley. I received an advanced reader copy of this book in exchange for my honest opinion and review.

Post Partum had me hooked from the start. Alice is suffering from what we believe is post partum depression but then things get to the point where she is sleepwalking and hallucinating. This is when Alice (and the reader!) start to really wonder what is true and what isn't. The authors do a great job depicting the struggles that Alice is trying to get through. Watching her spiral into essentially a mental breakdown was hard but exceedingly well done. It shows just how devastating mental illness can be and just how hard it can be to climb out of the hole that is depression. Post Partum definitely kept me guessing and I plowed through it quickly because I HAD to know what was really going on!

Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for the advanced copy in exchange for my honest review :)

Thank you to NetGalley and Sterling & Stone for the chance to read this book!

This is a fast paced gripping wild ride, This book will have you wondering whether you're sane or not following along in Alice's footsteps, esp if you're a mother remembering how hard life was with sleep deprivation right after having a baby. You can do and think some cray cray things, so this is right up that alley! Quite a few twisty sharp turns in this one and when things start happening. It goes fast so pay attention and make sure you don't have anything to do with the rest of your night Because this one is pretty hard to put down!

Post Partum by by Nolon King and Lauren Street is a gripping pyschological thriller. Alice is experiencing postpartum depression and nightmares, but then it seems she also begins to hallucinate. However, when Alice's husband insists that their baby is dead, Alice refuses to believe it and begins a journey of trying to figure what is true versus what isn't. This was quite a stressful read for me (not in a terrible way), with several dark twists and the reader is also unsure of what to believe until the end of the book. Quite engrossing.

This was a raw and powerful look into how hard life is for a woman after giving birth. The struggle was really in-depth. After the first plot twist though you are kept on edge while the authors have you second guessing everything. While the main characters are well developed, I do wish more information was given about Alice’s parents. I felt like I was missing some puzzle pieces in that area. Overall the twists in this novel were superb and I very much enjoyed questioning my own sanity on what was going on!

I have read almost everything of Lauren’s. At least all that I have found. I love both her characters Rileigh and Sam from their series.
I have also read a few of Nolons books - and will have to look for more.

In regards to writing a review on this particular book - I cannot- I cannot figure a way of saying what I wish to say without spoiling it for the astute reader.

So, instead, I am going to say “read this book” ; you may suspect as you get further into it; but you really won’t know until the end!

This book was crazy but in a good way. Alice was dealing with a lot of mental health issues and you weren’t sure what was real or wasn’t. She was an unreliable narrator and you were pulled into her depression and her confusion of what was real and what wasn’t. I thought she was dealing with post partum depression and then we find out Ellie was a doll, but she’d heard the baby crying, so we don’t know what was going on. We find out it was Max all along and Ellie was real and alive. He’s a psychopath and he gets what’s coming to him, which is satisfying to see.

Battling a believed case of postpartum depression Alice tries to determine whether she has gone crazy with hallucinations, or if the things she is seeing are real.
The story itself would be 4 stars as this book had kept me guessing, although confused at times.
This book lost a star due to the abundance of grammar and spelling errors, many of which would have been caught with spell check… For being written by two authors you would think they would have corrected those issues.

This one was an interesting read. There were times I thought a certain comment or theme was overused and other times I was like wtf? The story definitely kept me guessing. As a mother, I was able to resonate with some of the aspects of postpartum as far as the blur that is the first couple of weeks following childbirth. Overall, I enjoyed it!

A solid four stars!! Thank you NetGalley for a complimentary copy!

I flew through this book - it was so hard to figure out what was real and what was the result of the fog of new motherhood for Alice. Was her husband a monster? Was she hearing things?

Lots of twists and turns, very fast-paced with a satisfying ending.
