On a chance encounter at Rottnest Island, the chemistry between an Australian journalist and an American Navy Counselor sparks an undeniable connection. But with Lachlan’s military duties calling, he lets Beth slip through his fingers.
Two years later, Beth is building a new life dedicated to her family's Harbor to Hope charity when charismatic sailor Nick DeHann sweeps her into a whirlwind romance. Rushing into an elopement to America, Beth soon finds herself abandoned and alone.
Meanwhile, Lachlan struggles to find purpose after leaving the navy, until a reconnection with Beth reignites the flame he let extinguish. Realizing his mistake, he supports Beth's journey back to Australia and follows on a work visa, falling deeper in love.
But when Nick reappears asking for a second chance, Beth must confront the truth about his Bipolar Disorder and make a heart-wrenching decision that will irrevocably shape her future.
This story is a charming and heartfelt romance that blends a light investigative mystery with emotional depth and sparkling chemistry.
Lisa Renée’s writing is immersive and full of warmth, with vivid descriptions and natural, witty dialogue that brings both the characters and setting to life.
Bethany is a capable and complex heroine, while Lachlan offers a grounded, respectful counterpart whose muted strength shines.
Their relationship unfolds with sincerity and restraint, making their bond feel real and earned.
The mystery surrounding the declining Quokka population adds intrigue, though it fades by the end.
The novel’s greatest strength lies in its characters and their emotional journeys.
However, the environmental subplot could benefit from a more decisive resolution, and some secondary characters (like Wally) occasionally verge on caricature.
Indeed, we could remove the whole Nick character, improving the story arc and pacing. His contribution was not strong enough, in my opinion.
Overall, Between Two Shores is an enjoyable read, sweet, smart, and satisfying.
Clean romance enthusiasts seeking depth will appreciate this.
Beh’s choices Bethany has not had an easy life, having to adopt the role of surrogate mum to her five younger siblings at the age of fifteen, before gravitating into multiple roles of voluntary work at the community centres and working as a wannabe journalist. The author introduces readers to the unique Quokka, a marsupial native to Rottnest Island near Fremantle, Perth, when Beth decides to investigate the sudden increase of deaths among the endangered animals. Beth’s naiveté and sunshine character attracts Lachlan and, at a later stage, Nick, both American sailors when their ships visit the port of Fremantle. This novel does not fall into Ms Renee’s usual romantic comedy genre. The primary topic deals with romance, but the serious sub-themes highlighted throughout the story: the emotional support for marginalised citizens and mental disorder, in addition to the threats to the conservation of wildlife endemic to Australia, deserve attention from the reader. This is my honest opinion of the review copy I received from the author.
Beth and Lachlan meet on a ferry going to Rottnest Island. Because of Lachlan’s Navy duties they don’t see each other for two years. While they are apart Beth meets Nick, but things don’t go well. Really loved the storyline and the attention paid to Nick’s bipolar disorder. It not an easy subject but like how it was explained. The story is written to grab your attention and keep you turning pages to the end.
Great story that held my interest. Lachlan and Beth are remarkable characters. Both feel a deep need to help others. The story deals with Nick and how his Bipolar affects his behavior. It is dealt with understanding and compassion. I thoroughly enjoyed reading this and hope there will be more. I received a complimentary copy and this is my voluntary, honest review.

Beth meets Lachlan while doing an investigation for a news article. They have chemistry but his Navy career holds him back. Then Nick swoops in like a whirlwind of grand plans. Who will she choose? Will it be the right choice? What will it take before they find their HEA? I received a copy of this book from the author. Review voluntarily given.
