In a desperate attempt to secure a roof over her younger sister’s head, nineteen year old Allie Winthrop takes a job that no one else seemed too eager to apply for. The job is a maid position for a well to do family who had made a fortune in both the ranching and railroad industries.
Her bosses, Mister and Misses Treadwell, aren’t exactly the friendliest of people. Pure snobs truly is what they are, but Allie is used to being looked down on by the wealthy. All she cares about is that the jobs pays well and offers room and board to not only her, but her sister, Amelia. The Treadwells had even agreed to allow Amelia to get schooling from the woman they employed to teach their own children.
Life with the Treadwells is better than the life that Allie and Amelia had known before and Allie feels content and secure until Amelia starts speaking of a man in the attic. Spurred by her sister’s stories and by the Treadwells startling reactions to her questions about the attic, Allie decides to take a look for herself.
What she discovers there will change her life forever.
I finally found this book again! I had been searching for it for so long... It is the perfect book to curl up and read in this rainy weather.
I love the characters and their development. Everyone felt fleshed out, and the world descriptions managed to bring the story to life. I would highly recommend the book, but please check the content warnings before reading it.
rep: disabled MC, Black side character (not the best rep)
tw/cw: using “slavery” in vain, former child sexual abuse and on page depictions of its trauma (incestual), different types of abuse, murder, attempted rape.
other notes: unrealistic depiction of 8 year old, Black character judged by white character unnecessarily.
I first found this book on Wattpad, it’s been like 2 years since I’ve read this amazing book and I still think about this story very frequently. I’ll be sure to buy the paperback version for sure, thank you for such a bittersweet book 💜
I actually really like this book to have such a tough character like Allie and have her care for someone, people would most likely run from is very romantic and always manages to set me on fire, the chemistry between the two of them is very innocent and sweet, I love that its very original. A very kind read I couldn't keep it off my devices, my mom was literally dragging me through my laptop because of this story. Also I love Amelia she just says the funniest things and is very supportive of her sister and that is very important. To the author: because you have impressed me.
the harsh treatments due to a disability is horrible...bound in the attic for an entire life not knowing the world outside is cruel...well written book taking us through the journey of saving a poor man from the cruelty he has suffered from his own family and finding a girl poor yet strong enough to help him escape and find a true loving family...
The book was ok. I enjoyed it a bit but throughout the entire book I had the feeling of déjà vu. It felt unoriginal. There was also quite a few grammar errors. I did enjoy the ending though. I received this book free in a giveaway.
I am absolutely in love with this book. The characters are so beautifully heart wrenching as well as the plot, you just want the best for poor Michael and Allie
