Behind You, by Carly M. Duncan is an excellent mystery.  I was on the edge of my seat until the end, which was very satisfying, by the way!  Ms. Duncan's style is smart, and her characters are very well developed, so much so that they bring their own individual brands of mystery to the story of Heather's life threatening injury and how it happened.  This is a fast paced story, yet it lacks nothing in detail, which in my opinion is very impressive!  I can't help but wonder if Carly M. Duncan might answer a few more questions about these very interesting characters in a follow up novel.  Behind You gets an easy five stars from me!

I received this book for free as a Goodreads giveaway.
I was not familiar with Carly Duncan, or her work, previous to reading “Behind You”. It is definitely a mistake I won’t make again.
Duncan’s novel is a breath of fresh air! It is addictive and powerful and keeps a reader guessing right through to the end! The main protagonist, Heather, is a young newly-married woman who is violently attacked one night in her home and is sent to the hospital. During her recovery, the reader is introduced to several other characters, including Heather’s husband, mother, father, sister and maternal aunt. The secrets the family members hold captivate the reader and make the reader wonder—who was responsible for Heather’s attack?
Throughout the novel, my opinion of each character changed and their potential to commit a crime increased with each turning page. This novel literally kept me guessing and speculating right through to its unpredictable and satisfying conclusion.
The characters are imperfect, and the family dynamic is extremely dysfunctional. However, it is this very dynamic that makes the characters so human. Each family member has participated in behaviors that have wounded another, and this makes each character a possible suspect.
Duncan writes with simplicity and with honesty, and her novel “Behind You” was a satiating read. This novel is downright entertaining, and I was intrigued and fascinated throughout. Also, with the unassuming vocabulary, a reader can easily become enthralled! Her other novel is on my “to read” list for sure!

I love the author's writing style! It is fresh and exciting and kept me engaged throughout the book. This is a fast paced thriller that I couldn't put down. Characters are well developed with personalities and lives that add to the drama. I love a book that makes me take a second look at my own life and relationships. A great mystery!

I have to figure out who killed me.

The cover for Behind You by Carly M Duncan is appealing. The red stripe jumps off the cover, making it hard to miss.

The synopsis really made me curious.

I was looking forward to reading Behind You by Carly M Duncan.

Behind you is a psychological thriller that may have you questioning your own family’s secrets.

Who knows what your husband, your wife, your mother, your father……is really thinking?

Heather would envision where the next catastrophe would come from, even though there was never a first, until now.

She has a wild and vivid imagination.

Heather loved to get in the car and drive. That struck home for me. I have always loved to get in the car and hit the road, with no destination in mind. It was the journey that was important to me. I would roll down the window and crank the radio (or tape player – am I dating myself?), singing at the top of my lungs.

Have you ever let yourself free – just let the moment dictate your actions?

I was a bit disappointed, but would recommend reading it, especially if you are a fan of psychological thrillers.

I like novels written with different points of view and this book has a few. At times, I found myself a bit confused.

Perhaps it was the characters – Heather, Steven, Elizabeth, Katherine, Susan and Richard. That is quite a few points of view to follow, but it was important to the story to ‘hear’ their version of the story in their own words.

The ending was a surprise and, to me, that alone makes the book worth reading. It’s not often I am surprised and I like it. :-D

I received a copy of Behind you in return for an honest and unbiased review.

What an intriguing, twisted read. From the start, Carly M. Duncan’s Behind You held my rapt attention and I couldn’t put the book down. With brilliant storytelling techniques, Duncan expertly maintains the suspense and suspicion until the very end and made me keep guessing and guessing. Heather and her family members each have the chance to give (flawed) first-person accounts of the events, and just when I thought I knew all the details, a character would throw out a new revelation. With all the secrets and family drama, I didn’t know who I could trust to tell me the whole story – and that definitely kept me interested and engaged. I have not read a book like Behind You recently, and I really enjoyed it. I would recommend it for fans of mystery and suspense.

Thanks to Carly M. Duncan and Pump Up Your Book, I received a copy of Behind You and the opportunity to provide an honest review. I was not required to write a positive review, and all the opinions I have expressed are my own.

I received this book curtesy of the author Carly M. Duncan.

This book was great! The character development progressed fluidly, and I felt that the indvidual character chapters was a strong point for this book. The time line for the plot felt real and solid and clearly understandable.

As for the suspense of the entire book I would give it a 7/10. Most of the suspense was left at the end of the chapters when a reveling part of the plot was described. It was not really an "on the edge of my seat" book, but that doesn't mean the book didn't have intense parts.

I enjoyed the interweaving of the character relationships, but .

Overall I really enjoyed this book, it was a quick read with lots packed into its 194 pages. Definitely recommend to people wanting a good read, because it'll be hard to put down!

Woo! This short little novel is packed with page turning drama! Duncan really nailed it here, I didn't want to put this book down.

This who-done-it novel was quick paced and intelligently written. Heather is attacked and she and her family try to determine who did this to her. I was pretty sure I knew who the assailant was early on, but ended up being wrong. Everyone is a suspect in this book, which made it fun to try and figure out who the guilty party was. When the truth is revealed, I was somewhat disappointed, to be honest. It just didn't pan out, considering the motives everyone else had.

Regardless of how I feel about the end result, this was a fun book to read, and I'll certainly read it again! I also recommend it to fellow readers. Quick read, lots of little plot twists that will keep you guessing until the end.

I was given a copy of "Behind You" from the Goodreads First Reads program in exchange for an honest opinion.

This is a wonderful psychological thriller about a dysfunctional family. Heather, is attacked in her home, and lived only because a neighbor noticed the door open and found her. It is one of the family that tried to kill her, but who and why??

Each chapter is told in a different family member's voice (Heather's husband, mother, father, aunt, sister, and Heather herself). I LOVED that as it gives the reader an insight into each characters viewpoint. More and more family secrets come to light with each chapter, and the reader is constantly wondering, is this the killer?

The book is a fast-read, and kept me guessing all the way to a surprise ending.

I would definitely recommend this book to others.

Behind You by Carly M. Duncan is a fresh and interesting story that kept you guessing till the very end. Duncan has an interesting writing style that stopped the reader from putting the book down. Duncan provided a back story to every character that also acted as a motivation to commit the crime and because of this I wasn't at all expecting the ending and was very pleased with the result. The only reason she did not get 5 stars is because I reserve that rating for books that were life altering(e.g. Angela's Ashes), however, Behind You came very close. I would definitely recommend the book and I will read more of Duncan's work if I get the chance.

I really enjoyed the format of this story, the way we got to read each character 1st person. The mystery was great...I had a hard time putting it down. A lot of drama in this family. I would hightly recommend this book.

Wow. This was a very good book. I’m not just saying that because I’ve been reading lots of great mystery thrillers and crime novels but I didn’t expect the ending at all. It was a thriller ride to follow this family and kept me on my toes. I really liked how we got different POVs from all the characters involved and it really gave us a different view of how each character viewed and were viewed by eachother.

I also really liked the suspensefulness of the story and how it was written. Each chapter was a different perspective from one of the characters and was written in first person. Plus the story wasn’t told through the eyes of Heather, the main character that this story is about, but it was told through the other characters and I thought that was fabulous. I wasn’t expecting that’s how the story was going to be told but it worked beautifully in finding out what happened to Heather and the secrets everyone held from each other, if I’m making any sense.

This might be a spoiler but I just can’t keep it to myself! But as I read this story I started to feel sad for this family. From all the secrets I learned from them, I saw them all walking in the same path, just a different generation. There’s this whole under belly of family problems going on with this family and I thought, if this family was a lot closer to eachother and didn’t hide some many secrets then maybe many of the paths that were taken wouldn’t have to be repeated in the next-generation.

But anyways, this was a very unpredictable story. I thought I figured it out somewhat at the beginning but then got thrown off from all the other things that I learned as I read on. And my gosh, I saw it coming and suspected all the things that happened but it still shocked me speechless.

As we got to know the characters better each of them had their own problems and insecurities. I liked them all and hated them all at the same time. At first I thogught I liked them from how they were seen front the eyes of Heather before her attack but then as I got to see their POV and how they saw the others it absolutely changed how saw each of them. But I suppose it was also how they acted after Heather’s attack and from finding out their secrets.

But I can tell you I most disliked Heather’s sister, Elizabeth. She was just ignorant and didn’t care for anyone. Heather’s husband Steven was okay. I liked him and he seemed very sincere Dispite his flaws and his huge secret. Her parents were an odd couple. Her mother was very dramatic but that’s how mothers are, but she proved to be very surprising at the end. Her father was just, not there. Like he was always there but he’s more in the background. He let’s their mother do all the talking and ever since a huge accident that took place years ago involving their mother, his wife, he changed and has secrets of his own.

And her aunt, Katharine –her mother’s sister– was the one I liked the most. She was the one that I saw changed throughout the whole situation. Learning of her past and seeing her make life changing decisions at the end was something very, admiring. Though they all had some kind of life changing experience I felt Katharine had the most in-depth personality and realness to her character.

So in all, I highly recommend this book! Yes it was a super quick read and I thought I was going to get a cliffhanger ending because as I came closer to the last pages things still weren’t fully solved. But man was I surprised. I may have also been confused as I read the last pages and reread it more than twice over but man it really got my mind reeling. In a good way, well maybe a bit disappointed too because I have so many questions for the author!

But yes, I do recommend this for you mystery thriller readers!! It will blow your mind. And how it was written was just marvelous! Can’t think of it written any other way.

I have to begin by explaining a couple of things. One, I read and review books for authors. Why do I offer to do so? The number one reason would be I enjoy helping others. As an aspiring author, I know how tough it can be to get your work out there and what it means to the writer. I’m a Christian, and it is not my nature to be cruel. Therefore, I do my best to not trash someone’s work. At the same time, I will not say I like something that I did not.

Another reason I offer to read and review books for others is the opportunity to read an author I otherwise may not have. I typically stay in the genre I prefer, but every now and again I break that rule and offer to read something outside of what I like. That was the case with BEHIND YOU by CARLY M DUNCAN.

Heather’s family is anything but functional. So when tragedy strikes, her family is brought together, and repaired in ways they never imagined.

Not only have I never read one of MS DUNCAN’S books before, I had never heard of her. If I had not been asked if I wanted to read her book in exchange for an honest review, I doubt I would have ever purchased it. BEHIND YOU is not something I would typically read. Though decades ago, I use to read mysteries and thrillers, I now prefer to read Christian fiction, my favorite with a ranch or farm setting, where the hero typically wears a cowboy hat.

As I began to read BEHIND YOU, I did so with an open mind. I was surprised at how quickly I was drawn in. If there is one thing I’ve learned over the years, if an author has the elements it takes to make a good story, it matters little what the genre is.

MS DUNCAN is a remarkable writer. I didn’t want to stop reading BEHIND YOU. I loved the way she wrote in first person, starting each chapter with a different characters point-of-view. BEHIND YOU is a true page turner, a combination of MS DUNCAN’S amazing ability to write, and weave an astounding plot.

The entire book I kept guessing who might have done it. As I neared the end, I thought it wasn’t going to be revealed and I was preparing to be very upset. I can’t recall a story that had me guessing right down to the last line. Wow! I was not expecting that. I am a fan. What a great read.

Its been awhile since I read my first book by Duncan and while it was enjoyable, I don’t particularly remember anything exciting about that novel. When I was asked to review this novel I was expecting the same, a good novel but nothing groundbreaking. However, I was pleasantly surprised to find that this novel was much more memorable and exciting than I anticipated.

What I absolutely loved about this novel was that there was more drama than a reality TV show and hardly a dull moment between revelations. The best part was that each discovery was so convincing and incriminating that I was constantly changing my mind about who I thought did it. I thought everyone was guilty at some point and that made me even more excited to get to the end and find out exactly who it was that hurt Heather.

All the switching perspectives took me a little while to get used to, just because there were so many characters, but once I figured out who everyone was I loved being able to watch the drama unfold from so many directions. Each member of Heather’s family had something they were hiding and I was at the edge of my seat as I was bounced from one revelation to another. Even though the story was great as it was I can’t help but wonder about the far reaching implications of each discovery, I would love another book about the more far reaching consequences!

The only reason I’m not giving this one five stars was that the beginning of the book didn’t really seem to match up with the end. Though the revelation at the end was shocking, and honestly worked very well for the story, the set up at the beginning just didn’t add up with what the revelation was. Another reason I didn’t rate this one five stars was because I finished with this book with a bunch of questions, though it didn’t take away from the overall story I just wanted a little bit more information than what I got.

However, the little inconsistency at the end didn’t change the fact that Behind You was a fantastic book full of drama and mystery. Once I started this book I couldn’t put it down until I reached the last page. I definitely recommend this one to fans of mystery, you won’t be disappointed!

Oh what a tangled web we weave when first we practice to deceive.

I don’t believe there has ever been a book that quote would describe more perfectly.

What a web this journey was too.

Heather was attacked. She is in the hospital fighting for her life.

We then meet the cast of characters.

Steven – her husband

Susan – her mother

Richard – her father

Elizabeth – her sister

Katherine – her mother

Then there was Stacey the nurse who I was even starting to suspect for awhile.

Behind You goes in and out of each of their stories, being narrated by each individual. (The chapters each start off with the name of who we are with at that moment.)

Each person has their own secrets, their own things that they are hiding, but would any of them actually want to kill Heather?

I finished this book in one day, more like 2 hours. I was engrossed and actively involved with the story, trying to figure out who done it as I found out each person’s secret. I wasn’t a huge fan of so many narratives going on in the same book, but I knew without question who was speaking during each chapter, so it worked out.

I didn’t fall in love with any of the characters, but I don’t think I was supposed to. These were each fallible people, I’d say just like you and me, but I hope I don’t ever act like the majority of them.

I can honestly say that my mouth dropped open as I read the last sentence of the book.

I was all what the??? What just happened here?

It worked though and brought a very interesting story to a really unusual end.

I never would have guessed that ending in a million years.

4 stars from me.

Thank you so much for my copy of Behind You!

My Review: This book was sent to me by the author for an honest review. I do not normally read mysteries but having read and enjoyed a book by Duncan I was up for it. I found it very interesting and really enjoyed all the various viewpoints of the characters. There are a lot of underlying story lines and characters but you aren't left feeling overwhelmed or confused, instead you are drawn into the story and can't help but pick away at details to draw your own conclusions. It is a captivating read, so much so that you don't realize how long you have been sitting in one spot reading.

I've had "Behind You" sitting on my bedside table for way too long, caught up in the day to day grind and unable to find time to dive into a new read. I finally had a few moments to pick it up and within 10 pages, I was hooked! I was amazed at how I could find the time when I just had to know what was coming next. I truly loved the multiple points of view approach the author took, it made me feel as though I had a personal window into each character. I think Carly Duncan is a gifted writer and I just love when I find a new author to eagerly await future novels from. I wish she already had a larger library of published work, then I wouldn't have to wait at all! I usually stray away from mystery style novels, I can't always take the suspense, but luckily I ripped through this book quickly and the wait wasn't long for a very unexpected ending.
