Jean Grainger was born in Cork, Ireland. She has been a tour guide of her beloved home country, a teacher, a university lecturer and a playwright. She began writing fiction at the suggestion of her clients on tours, many of whom were sure all the stories she told them would make for a great book. Her first book, The Tour, has become a Number 1 bestseller on Amazon. It tells the story of a disparate group of American visitors to Ireland, who, along with their Irish tour guide have a life changing experience in the magical Emerald Isle.
Her second book, So Much Owed, is a family saga set during the Second World War. The story centres on the Buckley family of West Cork and how their lives are pulled in different directions as they become embroiled in the war. It is a sweeping family saga of intrigue and romance against the background of occupied Europe.
In her third novel, Shadow of a Century, she tells a tale of a battered old flag found in New York in 2016, a century after it was used during the Easter Rising, when Ireland made her final bid for freedom from Great Britain. This tells the story of a journalist who uncovers a story, one with much more to it than a flag.
Her fourth novel, due out in Spring 2016, Under Heaven’s Shining Stars, is set in the 1970s in Cork, Ireland and is a novel about friendship. Three boys, Liam, Patrick and Hugo, though from very different backgrounds are united in a deep but often times challenging friendship. As their lives progress, only by staying strong, can they prevail. Or fail.
Her novella, Letters of Freedom, tells the story of Carmel, stuck in a pointless marriage, when a figure from her past emerges and changes everything with a ‘like’ on Facebook. This quick read will touch your heart.
She lives in Cork with her husband and her two youngest children. The older two come home occasionally with laundry and to raid the fridge.

Best of the series so far and just impossible to put down - also most eventful from the tragic beginning (which we knew from the preview at the end of the 3rd book), to war drama across the globe, to personal drama for both our main characters and to a tbc ending that promises even more

Just superb stuff and a series for the ages

I’ve read most of Jean Grainger’s books over the years and cannot find fault with any of them. I have said in previous reviews that she has a knack for creating characters with whom it is easy for the reader to become attached. A series ends, and I find myself sad that I will not likely have an opportunity to see my friends again. It’s like that with Grace. Life just keeps handing her hits, and she just keeps responding with…well, with grace. I will admit to being glad to see a rather despicable character get what he deserves in this newest release.

Once again we travel off the island to see Richard and his group continue to follow the war and its horrors. We see once again how cruel war is and how its participants do not always play by the rules.

Kudos to Mrs Grainger and her amazing talent. I look forward to returning to Knocknashee soon.

I thought this was the final book but there is a 5th coming this summer. I gave this one 5 stars as I did the others in the series despite there being a bit more about the war than I would have liked. It seemed like there was less letter correspondence. I’m rooting for Grace and Richard.

Book , Sincerely Grace continues the Knocknashee story at full throttle. Grace and Declan got married in the chapel in the hospital in Cork where her doctor practices. They had it there for two reasons: they could have Father Iggy marry them with out Canon Rafferty being there and two so that Dr. Harrington could give her away. However, nearly the whole town ended up being at the wedding. It turned into a double wedding as Charlie (Declan's father) and Dymphna were married as well. They turned out to be beautiful weddings.
Meanwhile, Richard is continuing his work in London with Jacob and his sister Sarah. He continues writing to Grace, although not as frequently. He had been outside in the middle of a bombing raid and helped save a girl from her burning home. Later, while he was recovering from a head injury, she sat with him and helped the nurses in the hospital with him. Having no family and no place to go, he took her home with him. She and Sarah became close friends and Pippa began helping Richard with some photography and also working in a munitions factory. Richard and Pippa began growing closer.
Unfortunately, all is not going well in Knocknashee. A U-boat struck a ship and the men went out in their boats to look for survivors. Declan went out in his boat which had an engine which he had built by himself. Since his boat could go farther than those rowed, the fleet went in without him while he and two other men went a little farther looking for a lifeboat. They hit a mine and blew up. Suddenly, Grace is a widow after being a wife for only weeks. The sea took her parents and ;now Declan. Grace is devastated. Then, to top it off, Eloise and Tilly are arrested on the suspicion of being German spies. Tilly is arrested while she is comforting Grace at her house. What else can happen to Grace?

Read my full review on Rosepoint Publishing.

That masterful Irish storyteller is at it again with Book 4 of the Knocknashee Story.
Grace’s tenure as headmistress of the Knocknashee School is on very rocky grounds when Canon Rafferty is set to return.

While WWII continues to keep Richard and Jacob on her side of the pond when the chips are down with the Canon, it also means he is sent into the fray to write war stories for his paper back home.
In the meantime, Grace becomes a widow about the time Richard (who is still unaware that Grace never got his letter of declaration) is becoming closer to Pippa.

There is conspiracy, possible espionage, and stories of the struggles of Ireland during “the Emergency” as well as interesting tidbits about the war you may not have been aware of previously.

The intrigue ramps up and the tension tightens as forces still appear to be working against Richard and Grace ever becoming aware of the other’s feelings. It plays heavily on the reader’s heart since we are now fully engaged in Pippa’s character.

Life is never dull in the village and the series continues to weave a narrative that builds connection and love to the characters. 4.5 stars

Many thanks to the author for providing me with the opportunity to read and review this book. The thoughts expressed here are my own.

This is the latest engrossing installment in The Knocknashee Story, the 4th volume, and starts in November 1941. The excellent characters from the previous books are back; Grace and her Knocknashee friends, her “pen pal” American Richard Lewis, now stationed in London as The Capital’s war correspondent along with his sister Sarah and her fiance Jacob Nunez; and Pippa Wills, now Richard’s girlfriend.

Grace’s longtime friend Tilly, her close friend Eloise, Charlie McKenna and expectant wife Dymphna all play major roles in the developing story. It begins as a German U2 boat has hit an English merchant ship offshore from Knocknashee and word reaches shore that two are dead and three seriously injured. A rescue mission begins, involving postman Charlie McKenna, Grace’s husband Declan and others.

The scene shifts when Richard and Jacob are then sent to Singapore by Kirky, who has sent them a telegram saying the Japanese had bombed Pearl Harbor. But Japanese brutality in Singapore forces the two men to escape elsewhere to Sumatra.

I love the way this author slips in wartime atmospherics such as, that New York City is to be blacked out at night to prevent U2 attacks and that the government has plans to “black out ten thousand towns and cities.” Although I grew up in and near NYC, this is something I’d never heard. Also, the tidbits on rationing of tea in neutral Ireland were interesting.

I won’t go into more detail about the plot but will say each character was so well-described and integral; the precocious Paudie, Dymphna’s son, who is only nine but even an expert on secret compartments in desks and bee communication due to his inquiring mind.

I highly recommend this book as it do the previous books in the series. It is a pure delight.

Such an exciting book!
Grace and Richard continue to keep one another updated with their separate lives via detailed and descriptive letters, discussing everything except their hidden feelings for one another.
While the war takes an unpredictable toll on Richard and Jacob, resulting in closer relationships with Pippa and Sarah respectively on their return to London, it also only causes further confusion for Richard when he receives Grace’s letter.
This fourth novel in the series initially follows a similar storyline as the previous books…until the suspense and intrigue suddenly intensify in the latter chapters. I couldn’t read fast enough to discover the outcome!
Ms Grainger gives the reader an interesting overview of the Second World War, sharing some little-known perspectives. All her characters are engaging and, while Grace steals the limelight with her gentle courage and willingness to accommodate the needs of others, Pippa must be mentioned for her selfless generosity.
I received this book, which ends on a high note, as an ARC and I hope Ms Grainger has almost completed Book 5 😊.

A captivating chapter in the lives of Grace and Richard.
The time period is the second World War, and this time we see the wider impact the war has on Ireland and the way the people dealt with rations. false accusations, imprisonment and spies. The characters that have been woven throughout this series, continue to interact and face challenges, and great loss together. Grace is the headmistress of the Knocknashee School on the Dingle Peninsula. Life has thrown many challenges at Grace that she had to battle, including finding love and losing it to tragedy, and finding another love from far away. Her worst enemy is Canon Rafferty who has caused much grief to Grace and the people of the village, by ruling as an evil tyrant, who will just not go away.
I was on the edge of my seat as I turned the pages of book four in this series. Waiting to see if Richard and Grace will ever fulfil their love?, Will the canon get to meet his final judgement? Well worth the read. I eagerly await the launch of the final chapter in this series, from a wonderful storyteller.

⁹Another unputdownable from Jean!

Miss Fitz (Grace) is making a success of being headmistress of Knocknashee school with the help and love of her caring friends and neighbours after everything that has happened to her since she lost her beloved parents.

Her life was very hard under the eagle eye of her awful sister who was very strict and ran the school with a rod of iron, overseen by Canon Rafferty who is hell bent on destroying Grace but she is made of stern stuff and will not be worn down.

Since she began corresponding with Richard from the US, Grace's life has taken on new meaning for her especially since they met up I'm Knocknashee.

Although she began a relationship with lovely Declan which seemed to provide a secure and happy future, life took a very cruel turn and Grace was once again left feeling bereft and alone.

Richard came to Grace's help when everything came to a head and the German 'spy' was finally exposed.

I'm looking forward to Book 5 where I hope Grace and Richard will finally find the happiness they deserve amidst all the turmoil of a cruel war.

Sincerely, Grace is the fourth book in the series, and I have absolutely fallen in love with all the characters, especially Grace. I know there are two more books in this series, and I have started the fifth one, but I’m reading it very slowly. If you’re looking for a series that focuses on character development, this is the one to read. Jean Grainger has masterfully woven these wonderful characters into the backdrop of WWII. The research that has gone into these books is impressive. I particularly enjoy learning about Ireland during the war, a topic that doesn’t often receive attention since it was a neutral country. What challenges will Grace and Richard face in their relationship? How do the events of WWII specifically impact the characters’ lives and choices? What themes will be explored in the remaining two books of the series? I can't wait to find out, and yet I find I just don't want the stories to end.

These books aren’t the longest but soooo much happens in each one. I did update this one at just 10% in. I’m afraid I was a bit miffed with the author. Major tragedy at the beginning of the story?!?!? ( I would have liked for the couple to have had more time.)

I really like the Richard character. He’s a good and kind man. But…. The Pippa situation is a little bit wrong with how he’s handling it. Back and forth with his feelings.
*** though I thought Pippa’s letter to Richard may have been some foreshadowing that she’s a better match with the Polish soldier maybe? *** because honestly it does seem they both “love” each other but it’s more out of convenience and the circumstances of the war.

Truly hope a certain Canon Rafferty gets his due and justice is served. I liked how information was revealed and how the situation came about.

The epilogue!!!! THE letter finds its way to Grace. Yep that one. What will the next book bring?

I have read almost all of Jean Grainger’s books. Jean’s books taught me about Irish history in a way I would never ever have learned without reading them.

I love the various series she has created with all the extremely well-developed characters who come alive on the page as if they were real souls. I feel blessed to have found her as an author.

The Knocknashee Story is another magnificent series, creatively constructed showing the survival of individuals in a town, especially the main character Grace, who must survive the physical challenges presented to her from contacting polio, as well as the emotional, mental, and psychological abuse of her sister the the overpowering Canon. Who doesn’t cheer on a strong character. And love prevails..

Thank you again, Jean Grainger. Your work is truly edifying.

Book 4 of the Knocknashee Series is a page-turner for sure. I think this is Jean Grainger’s best series ever. If you haven’t started this series, it’s past time! Jean Grainger is a must-read author, much like Maeve Binchy and Rosamunde Pilcher. Her characters are unforgettable, and all her facts are historically correct. Enjoy! Book 5 has been released and I am already deep into it, just wanting to find out what happens to all of the rich characters of Grace, Richard, and their families, and friends. And I am delighted to know there is a Book 6 available on Amazon now.

The series of books in order are 1. Lilac Ink 2. Yesterday’s Paper 3. History’s Pages
4. Sincerely, Grace 5. Folded Corners 6. Allied Flames

This series just got better. Are Grace and Richard meant to be together? They both realise that they are the love of each others lives, but fate seems to disagree. Both have met, and married in one case, who they thought they wanted to spend their life with, but gradually realise that they were wrong. Canon Rafferty is still trying to ruin Grace's life but his shady dealings with baby selling are discovered it's him who finally gets his comeuppance. A letter sent during the war and lost is finally received but is it too late to bring Grace and Richard the happiness they both deserve? I can't wait to see what happens in the final book.

Sincerely Grace is the fourth book in the wonderful ‘Knocknashee series’.
I definitely recommend these books are read in order for maximum enjoyment.
It is now 1941 and the war continues. Grace’s life is once against turned upside down whilst her best friend Tilly faces troubles of her own. Richard is still working as a war correspondent in London desperately looking for answers that may or may not help.
This is a fabulous series and this book did not disappoint. The level of detail is both incredibly interesting and important to the story. The characters are brilliant, honest and incredibly likeable. I loved this book and cannot recommend it highly enough.

What an absolutely wonderful sequel in the story of Grace and Richard! I enjoyed every word.

I loved the factual and detailed historical background It blends into the story so organically and is really enriching and interesting.

It's a delight to hear more of Richard and Grace and I, for one, am holding on for a 'happy ever after'. Grace is so strong and so human and Richard is such a nice person. The book has quite a few surprising and clever twists which make it hard to put down. Can't wait for the next installment!

Do not wait to get this book

Having read Jean’s books for several years now, I have always enjoyed them, but this particular series has whetted my desire to go back to Ireland for the sixth time. Particularly since I live in the south of the United States, and there is a few characters in these series., I am very enthralled with this era. My favorite books are World War II historical novels, &Jean has written the very best. I have pre-ordered the next book, and I will not spoil anything for you. I just say be sure you get booked number five.

I truly love this series and can’t wait for Book 5( although I will miss almost all of the characters — a few will not be missed at all !! ) I would love to have Grace step off the page and into my kitchen for a cuppa!
Jean Grainger writes with her heart and soul and so much knowledge of Ireland and WW2 . I also truly enjoyed the quick visit to Northern Ireland to”reunite” with Rabbi Frank and Elizabeth Klein of “The Star and Shamrock” series .
An entertaining but also very powerful book and series.

I Love This Series!

This is the fourth book of the series and is as delightful as the first 3. The characters are real, the situations believable, and the story is interesting. I heard a term awhile ago: the flavor of the author. To me that means you can tell immediately if you will enjoy the book. Each author has his or her style that contributes to the reader's enjoyment. Jean Grainger is a wonderful storyteller and I look forward to finishing this series and reading her other series.

As usual from this author it is written in an easy flowing style. The story keeps you wanting to know more, how the characters interact and face the challenges of the historical period it is set in .All this in the background of the Second World War and the horrors some had to face.
This time the author gives a broader perspective of history and how it impacted on the Irish. Thoroughly recommend all the books in the series.

4th book in this fabulous saga that takes place in Knocknashee, Western coast of Ireland. After a tough start to kife, 21 year old Grace has finally found fulfillment personally and professionally, but then tragedy strikes on both fronts and she is faced with even greater challenges. In the meantime, Richard is covering WWII as a correspondent and his life is complex. He can’t stop thinking of Grace. It ends with a cliffhanger and I can’t wait to have the next book released!

Another fantastic read from Jean Grainger the saga of pen-friends Grace and Richard continues. Set just before WWII and during the war you feel like you are there with these characters. I could not put it down I wanted to see what would happen and i did not want the book to end. Waiting for the next book out in June. The characters are written so well you feel like you are with them while they tell you, their story.
Wonderfully written by a great storyteller.

Grace and Richard

I was counting the minutes until I could download this book....... And just like that, I am counting the minutes until June 30 gets here.
I already knew Declan had died, but I curve shock all over again as we relived it at the beginning of this book and of course I cried so hard I couldn't see.
All of your books are filled with true feelings that we can all relate to.

I adore these characters, Grace and Richard. The letter that lonely, orphaned polio victim Grace tossed into the sea in Ireland reached Richard in Savannah, Georgia. Their friendship has grown over the course of WW2, and in this book they might finally be able to confess to each other that the friendship is actually love. Yet several understandable complications due to the war keep this just out of reach. Cannot wait to read the next installment!

GRACE,My Hero

I love all of Jean’s books and I really love Ireland. My ancestors all came from there. I have been there many times and seen the poverty of the old and the successful transformation of modern day. While things are not perfect I love the warmth of the Irish people and that see what I see in the character of Grace. With all she has been through she is still a gentle, loving person. The world needs more Graces!

Oh my Goodness, don't I just love this series !

Ms. Grainger, you've done it again, kept me enthralled to the last page. I am now just going to have to wait until I can finally read that Richard and Grace might actually get together in the new book expected in the Summer.
Your characters are perfect and become old friends to those who become immersed in your novels.
I highly recommend this book but you need to read the whole series too.
