Within the first few pages, I’d fallen in love with several of the characters in Dan Russell’s, Lies We Choose to Believe, in particular the protagonist Jacob. Driven by Russell’s fantastic storytelling, I couldn’t put the novel down as I clung to all of Jacob’s trials and tribulation (there are many). Russell’s characters defy stereotype and he crafts a story rich with plots twists and regional flavor. Arkansas is a state I’ve yet to visit but Russell had me right there. I await the next work from this talented author.
Great debut novel by Russell, which showcases both his talent at writing authentic characters and authentic places. The book focuses on tensions from the ultra-religious aimed at the local LGBTQ+ community in Eureka Springs, Arkansas. While a heavy, timely topic, Russell uses his pen to advocate for love and acceptance over condemnation and judgement, highlighting the light and humanity of those who are “different” from us. (CW/TW: hate crimes, violence, assault)
A non-traditional family mixed with the comforts of a hometown and a stirred in mystery/conspiracy that makes you question everyone. I loved it, I enjoyed how the country tones and characters made me feel right at home. I appreciated seeing how family does not always look “normal” but it’s no less loving and supportive and every life has value regardless of what the world thinks.
