Kaum hat Anna Fekete ihre erste Stelle als Kriminalkommissarin angetreten, landet auch schon ein Mordfall auf ihrem Tisch: eine junge Frau, die beim Joggen im Wald auf grauenvolle Weise getötet wurde. Anna nimmt die Ermittlungen auf. Ihr zur Seite gestellt ist Esko Niemi, ein alter Haudegen, der seine junge Kollegin torpediert, wo er kann. Bis ein zweiter Mord geschieht und Esko klar wird, dass sie den Killer nur gemeinsam finden werden. Doch Anna ist bereits auf eigene Faust unterwegs.
Die 19-jährige Riikka wird beim Joggen im Wald brutal ermordet. In den Taschen ihres Sportanzugs findet sich ein Amulett, dem die Polizei jedoch keine weitere Beachtung schenkt. Anna Fekete und ihr Kollege Esko Niemi übernehmen die Ermittlungen. Beim Verhör von Riikkas Freundeskreis erfahren sie, dass Riikka sich kurz zuvor von ihrem Freund getrennt hat. Aš mėgaujuosi skaitymu (dažniausiai) ir beveik visada skaitau kiekvieną laisvą minutę. Tačiau šį kartą prisigalvojau begalybę (na gerai, tik du - žiūrėjau tv ir žaidžiau telefone žaidimukus 🤯, ko paprastai nedarau) kitų užsiėmimų, kad tik neskaityčiau😅🙊 nes knyga buvo viena didelė katastrofa - nuobodi, nesukelianti nė menkiausio jausmo, veikėjai neįtikinantys, neišpildyti, siužetas - lyg ir būtų įdomus, jei galiausiai viskas būtų logiškai ir įtikinamai pasibaigę, nes dabar tai tiek ir motyvai, tiek ir visi pašaliniai istorijos vingiai prasilenkė su logika.

This was an enjoyable police procedural story set in Finland, dipping into immigration and implications of an arranged marriage. Characters within the police department were reasonably well developed. The main detective struggles with her own identity, and has an interesting personality and background. However one of the main characters spoiled the book for me as he was too unbelievable, being vile to his colleagues, a drunk, sexist, homophobic and racist.

KOLIBRIS. Autorė – Kati Hiekkapelto.Su detektyvais būna taip: arba jie patinka, ar jie nepatinka. Rodos, kad tarpinio varianto nebūna. Ir šiuo atveju buvo taip – atsisėdi, tai ir neatsitrauki kuriam laikui.
KOLIBRIS labai geras atradimas, kurį turėjau jau senokai perskaityti. Įtraukė, domino, intrigavo ir pykdė. Nė akimirkos nepagalvojau, kad kažkas su šiuo literatūriniu kūriniu yra negerai. Viskas buvo išpildyta, aprašyta, tinkamai subalansuota. Pagrindinė linija – tyrimas, prie jo prisideda kitas tyrimas, atsiranda kiek globalesnė problema, ko pasekoje tinkamas ir geras išrišimas. Juokinga, kad prisiminiau, bet vienintelis knygos nemalonumas man – skaityti kiek keistesnius suomiškus vardus ir pavardes.
Detektyvė. Patiko, kad skaitytojas galėjo sekti, kokio stiprumo/silpnumo yra pagrindinė veikėjo, koks pokytis vyksta jai pradėjus ir jai pabaigus bei su kokiomis žmogiškomis problemomis susiduria. Aš įžvelgiau joje potencialiai stiprią asmenybę, kuriai kartais pasitaiko elementarių nukrypimų. Bet svarbiausia, kad ji buvo tvirta, ko detektyvuose ir tikiuosi iš veikėjų.
Rekomenduoju. Rimtas, gerai subalansuotas detektyvas. Daugiau apie jį pasakoti nebūtina, patiems teks įsitikinti. Esu patenkintas siužetine linija, nukrypimais, papildomais vingiais, veikėjų būdo bruožais. Solidus ir malonus atsipalaidavimas.
Matysime, kaip Anai seksis kitose jos istorijose.

Interesting premise of an immigrant policewoman in a homogenous nation like Finland. I felt the author did a great job with showing Finnish society and culture from the point of view of an immigrant; the liberal use of (italicized) Hungarian words and phrases without a translation got slightly annoying at times as I didn't always feel I was getting them from context. One item that found ironic concerned the Finns' difficulty with the Mexican god Huitzlopotchli - not much self-awareness there on how their language strikes others.
Regarding plot, the murder investigation wasn't badly done, although by the end I was ready for the book to be over. Agree with other reviewers that the subplot involving a Kurdish family and (possible) "honor" violence wasn't well integrated.
Recommended as Scandi Noir that doesn't get too dark.

Neblogai susiskaitė, bet neužkabino. Iš pradžių buvo įdomu, kiek neįprastas siužetas - emigrantė, dirbanti Suomijos policijoje ir jos partneris alkoholikas rasistas. Nusikaltimai tai irgi nebuvo tokie „iš paprastųjų“.
Nepatiko, kad buvo skiriama daug dėmesio Anos bendradarbių asmeniniams gyvenimams, tiksliau, jų nenusisekusiems asmeniniams gyvenimams. Tiesiog pasirodė, kad tai nėra reikšminga ir neturi jokio pointo šitoj knygoj ir šiaip 80% knygos veikėjų yra nelaimingi. Kas gyvena nelaimingoj santuokoj, kas šiaip gyvenimo nesusitvarkę yra.
Pabaiga tai nuvylė labiausiai... taip, viskas buvo labai painu ir kai paaiškėjo žudikas, nepavyko pačiai susiet visko, bet va kai paaiškėjo motyvas, tai čia jau buvo viskas aišku - pieva ir tiek.
Palinkėkit stiprybės, nes dar 2 dalys laukia :D

Kolibri är den första boken i serien om Anna Fekete som redan första dagen på sitt nya jobb som brottsutredare ställs inför det svåra arbetet att lösa mordet på en ung tjej som har blivit skjuten i ett joggingspår. Samtidigt oroar sig Anna för en annan ung tjej som hon misstänker kan kommas att utsättas för hedersvåld. Det är mycket för henne redan det och att på köpet tvingas stå ut med en rasistisk kollega gör inte situationen bättre.
Kolibri var en bok som jag var hemskt nyfiken på att läsa mycket för att jag aldrig tidigare har läst en finsk kriminalare. Jag gillar Anna Fekete, hon har sina egna privata demoner, barndomen i Jugoslavien, brodern som aldrig verkar vilja ta ansvar för sitt liv och de människor hon har mist. Jag gillade verkligen att karaktärerna kom till liv i boken, att det inte bara var Anna man fick en inblick i hemmalivet hos utan även de andra poliserna. Dock, kände jag ibland att det privata livet hos poliserna, samt Annas privata övervakning av den unga tjej som hon tror har problem med sin familj tog överhand och att fallet med den mördade tjejen hamnade lite i skymundan. Framåt slutet kändes det lite som om författaren kom på att hon hade ett mordfall som behövde lösas. Så, en stark start, svackor här och där under berättelsens gång för att sedan avslutas med en spurt och i mina ögon inte en helt överraskad avslutning, dock en bra sådan och jag ser fram emot att läsa nästa bok.

The Hummingbird is the first book in the series about Anna Fekete, who on the first day of her new job as criminal investigator faces the difficult work to solve the murder of a young girl who has been shot while out running. At the same time, is Anna under constant worry about another young girl life. She suspects that the young girl could risk being honor killed if she doesn't do what her family wants. It's a lot for her to deal with already and a racist colleague does not make the situation better.
I was curious about The Hummingbird because I have never read a Finnish detective novel before. I like Anna Fekete, she has her own private demons, with her childhood in Yugoslavia, the brother who never seems to want to take responsibility for his life and the people she has lost. I really liked that the characters came to life in the book that it was not only Anna's life the reader got an insight into but also the other policemen's. However, sometimes, I felt that the private life of the police, as well as Anna's private surveillance of the young girl she believes, has problems with her family took over and that the case of the murdered girl ended up overlooked. In the end, it felt a bit like the author realized that she had a murder case that needed to be solved. So, a strong start, sluggish here and there during the story and then ending with a spurt and in my eyes, not a completely surprising conclusion, but a good one and I look forward to reading the next book.

I'm a fan of Scandinavian noir. I started this book based on an article on the genre in The Guardian.
This book is a translation from the Finnish language original. I can see the author has potential. However, I'm having real issues with the translation. Firstly, this is a translation from Finnish to British English. That's OK, it adds to the charm. Also, Finns speaking English would likely be using that dialect. However, the translator (David Hackston) makes some peculiar word choices. They are not in character with the protagonist, the genre, or at points technically correct.
For example, early in the story the protagonist (Anna Fekete) refers to her own ass as her bottom. I can't envision her inner dialog being so juvenile. The description of a murder is made confusing by the use of the word rifle. The murder weapon is typically used for duck hunting. Ducks are not hunted with a rifle. The murder weapon is a shotgun. Also, shotguns 'shoot' pellets or shot not bullets as found in the text. Another example is Anna's use of the expression bloke-to-bloke. I feel certain it was originally man-to-man. Which is also the common usage in the UK.
Characters are good. The Anna character being the best. The values dissonance experienced by her character is the strongest suite of this story. Supporting police characters at the nick are a tad clichéd. Although, the Finnish spin to them makes them different enough. Victims, perps and supporting characters are a bit thin, but not cardboard.
Plotting has a solid foundation, but gets a bit creaky as the story progresses. Background plots are the stock They Fight Crime! trope going on between Anna and the Esko police character. A murder and a separate immigrant cultural clash push the story along. Steps taken will remind you of any British police procedural. I thought the author was too liberal with her red herrings. In addition, the perp in the murder plot is introduced at a peculiar time. The immigrant secondary story seemed more interesting to me than the main story.
Not being Finnish, world building is a part of this story for me. Action takes place in an unnamed, coastal Finnish city. I'm certain its Oulu from the minor locations that pop-up in the story. I can't agree with not naming the locale. I'd like to know more about Finland, without the locations being anonymized. However the city is a good backdrop for the current social issues of Finnish society exposed in the story.
This story has good bones. However, unforgivably cringeworthy technical errors related to firearms exist throughout. Prose was frankly, weird giving the book a clunky, YA feel. A translator or a British copy editor more attuned to the lingo of noir, mysteries would have greatly benefited this book. While the author and character have some merit, this book is just too poorly done for me to continue the next in the series The Defenceless. Life is too short and reading time too scarce to waste it reading shoddily translated scandi-noir stories, when many well translated and edited stories are 'out there'.
Readers interested in good scandi-noir should read Blood on Snow.

Ko gero vienas geriausių mano skaitytų detektyvų! Visiškai neradau prie ko prikibti, tad galiu drąsiai paantrinti savo jau išsakytą įvertinimą.
Aš gal keista detektyvų skaitytoja, bet juose visada ieškau kažko daugiau nei įprastos detektyvinės siužeto linijos. Ir savo didžiam pasitenkinimui šioje knygoje tai radau! Kartu su pagrindiniu siužetu gretimai einančią kitą pasakojimo liniją – tai imigrantų kelionę iš savo namų į Suomiją, susiduriamus sunkumus, nesugebėjimą (nenorą) prisitaikyti prie kitos kultūros. Nors pati autorė yra suomė, bet atskleidžia tokias opias problemas kaip rasizmas bei nesugebėjimas perprasti kitų kultūrų subtilybių.
Neatsitiktinai turbūt ir pasirinkta pagrindinė veikėja – Jugoslavijos vengrė Ana Feketė, kuri gauna tirti savo pirmąją bylą ir rasistą partnerį. Be galo stipri asmenybė, aštraus proto, bet kamuojama savų košmarų, bandanti pasikliauti savo nuojauta ir atkakliai įrodinėjanti, jog tai kad nėra suomė, tai dar nereiškia, kad galima su ja nesiskaityti.
Labai patiko nuoseklus rašymo stilius, neskubantis skaitytojo tempti kuo greičiau link finišo tiesiosios, o leidžiantis ramiai įsigilinti į smulkmenas, į veikėjų gyvenimus, tarsi supažindinant su jais ir leidžiantis įsijausti į kiekvieno asmenybę. Sudarantis realybės įspūdį – noriu pasakyti, jog byla nėra išsprendžiama per savaitę, kaip dažnai tenka matyti kituose kūriniuose ar kino filmuose, o parodomas tarsi tikras gyvenimiškas variantas, kur pareigūnų darbas išlieka darbu, o ne super herojų “pasirodymais”. Tas realybės prieskonis suteikė knygai išskirtinumo. O nuolat išlaikoma intriga, kuri atskleidžiama tik paskutiniuose puslapiuose, neleidžia skaitytojui atsikvėpti ir užsimiršti.

Megmondom őszintén nem számítottam rá, hogy a végén rajongani fogok érte, elmegyek a könyvbemutatóra is, és dedikált példánnyal villoghatok, mert ez a könyv az elején nekem igenis unalmas volt. A nyomozás úgy tűnt, hogy totál amatőren, vagy sehogyse folyik, és nem hittem el, hogy még mindig mennyi oldal van hátra... Varázsütésre változott aztán minden, de meg nem tudnám mondani hol, és ehhez mennyi köze volt a szerzővel való személyes találkozásnak is, de tény, hogy a személye is elvarázsolt, és a könyv is rettentően felpörgött, összebonyolódott. Nagyon tetszett a második fele, és a vége is, egyre gyorsabban próbáltam pörgetni a lapokat, hogy megtudjak minden szálon mindent. :)
Alig várom a következő részt is, ugyanezekkel a nyomozókkal (de nyugi, standalone-ként is megállja a helyét, nincs függővég)

I don't know why I like Finnish mystery novels so much. They are strange. (Well, there you go.) It may be because the part of the country I grew up in had a fairly large population of Finns.
"The Hummingbird" has a very tricky plot. Lots of things are going on at one time. Kati Hiekkapelto must have felt like one of those plate spinners from the old "Ed Sullivan Show" while she was writing it.
I was sure I was going to finish reading it and think, "Hey, wait a minute..." But, nope. Everything tied up very nicely. I won't say like a present, because this is a crime novel. How about like a Hefty brand Trash Bag.
I already have the second novel in the series queued up.

"Kolibris" kadaise labai šmėžavo bookstagramo pasaulyje - tąkart kažkaip vis nesusiviliojau, bet šiais metais visgi atėjo laikas "Kolibriui". Ir labai liūdna pasakyti, bet sužavėta tikrai nelikau. Silpna man pasirodė detektyvinė linija, keistai viskas rutuliojosi, nors pabaigoje logikos ir įdomumo buvo pakankamai, bet visa istorija, visa knyga man pasirodė nuobodi. Šis detektyvas išskirtinis tik tuo, kad jame nagrinėjamos labai svarbios, aktualios imigrantų temos. Tik man pasirodė, kad toms temoms tikrai nepakankamai laiko ir dėmesio autorė skyrė, nors nieko keisto - juk čia detektyvas, ir esmė bei tikslas šios knygos visai kitokie. Reziumuojant, nieko ypatingo, po mėnesio šios knygos tikrai neatsiminsiu. Kiekvieną kartą skaitant tokio tipo knygas ir nuobodžiaujant vis savęs klausiu, kodėl dar lendu į tą detektyvų žanrą. Bet vis kažkas traukia.

The Hummingbird – Striking Debut
Kati Hiekkapelto delivers a knockout punch in the fight to be top dog in the Scandi Crime wave with her debut crime thriller The Hummingbird. It has everything you need three interwoven stories, the dark noir, the defective detective, the racist detective all in the north of Finland as summer turns to the darkness of winter. This thriller will really get under your skin as the imagery is striking and at times stark and haunting like some of the landscapes can be as the changes from summer take place towards the arctic circle.
Anne Fekete and her family escaped the war torn Yugoslavia to the cold north of Finland she no longer thought like an immigrant even though her father was dead and her mother had gone ‘home’ rather than stay in Finland. Even though she looked different to the Blonde Finns she felt at home part of society.
Anne recently promoted to a detective in the Police has transferred back to her home town on the coast of Finland as an investigator in the Violent Crimes Unit and been introduced to her new partner Esko, who besides smelling of beer and cigarettes just happened to be the office racist. Nor does Esko hide his prejudices from Anne while she also becomes the target of a personal campaign to unsettle her.
Anne is thrown in at the deep end when the seemingly random murder of three joggers on running tracks 20 miles apart seem to have nothing that connects them. By slowly following the clues and the red herrings they do find that all three victims besides being joggers are found with a pendant in their pockets depicting an Aztec god.
What Anne and Esko have to do is try and work out the significance if the Aztec god to their investigation, how important is a red car and what a hummingbird has to do with the murders. They are thrown plenty of curve balls so much so that it is only a twist at the end when you find out the truth.
While investigating this case, Anne is also concerned about a Kurdish refugee girl and her family and she is sure there is something wrong. So much so, that she becomes obsessed with Bihar and worried that she may become a victim of an honour killing. Throughout the thriller we hear Bihar’s voice and all her worries about her life and her future and again we really do have to wait until the end to see Bihar and what may, if anything does, become of her.
This is an excellent dark noir thriller with strong characters an excellent story dealing with modern themes and she does not hold back on whether it is on prejudices of the Finns or the Immigrants. This is an excellent addition to the Scandi Noir Thriller another excellent writer who delivers a killer of a debut.

„Kolibris“ – labai ekspromtinis skaitinys, be jokių planų įsigytas, taip pat staiga perskaitytas ir suteikęs puikią progą atsipūsti tarp rimtesnių skaitinių.
Nebuvo jis aišku pats nerimtas, nes visgi detektyvas su lyg ir serijiniu žudiku, nors tikrai ne kraują stingdančiu kaip rėkia nugarėlė. Man didžioji šio detektyvo dalis kaip tik pasirodė lėtoka ir melancholiška, daug aplinkos vaizdų, jausmų ir to tokio paprasto, turbūt labai suomiško, tyrimo, kuriame nėra šaudau-gaudau ir per naktį ištiriamų pirštų antspaudų. Be pagrindinės linijos su bėgikus žudančiu serijiniu žudiku, besijaučiančiu actekų dievu, čia įpinta ir kitų detektyvinių istorijų, kurios lyg ir turi, lyg ir neturi sąsajų su pagrindine ir tik pabaiga paaiškina kas ir kaip. Man ji buvo netikėta ir sustatė viską į vietas tikrai puikiai, bet jaučiau tokius rimtus Nesbo atgarsius, kai pabaiga viską atskleidžia taip piktdžiugiškai „ahaa, o šito tai nesitikėjai, ką?“, kai net it negalėjai tikėtis, nes viskas susukta kiek per daug ir jokių normalių užuominų niekas net nesiteikė duoti. Man patinka dalyvauti tyrime, taigi asmeniškai tokiais dalykais nesidžiaugiu, bet savaime tai nėra minusas. Kiek didesnis minusas pasirodė, kad iš to šį kartą atsirado toks suskubinimo jausmas, kai visi tris mėnesius ir 400 puslapių tirto nusikaltimo motyvai pateikti lyg tarp kitko pusės puslapio apibendrinime.
Rimtos, iš tiesų, buvo ir kitos romane paliestos temos – migracijos problemos, musulmonų kultūros negerumai ir netolerancija. Jos nagrinėjamos sklandžiai įpynus į siužetą, nors kai kurie priėjimai ir šiek tiek vaikiški. Visgi labai džiaugiuosi, kad Kati Hiekkapelto pateikė skoningą detektyvinį romaną, kuris ir siužetu įdomus ir dar neša žinutę, kuri teisinga vs neteisinga perkelia į aukštesnį lygmenį nei paprasčiausio nusikaltimo tyrimas, kurio moralas pasibaigia su tuo, kad susodinus blogiečius už grotų gyvenimas vėl gražus, ko dažnai tikiesi iš eilinio detektyvo.

Anna Fekete, a Hungarian/Yugoslav brought to Finland as an infant, is now a Finnish citizen and a fully qualified detective in the Finnish police force. Even so, when she's appointed to a new post as a senior detective in the Violent Crimes Department of a city in northern Finland, she's subjected to racist abuse from the elderly cop who's been designated to be her partner there. This friction increases the department's difficulty as the cops investigate the vicious murder of a jogger -- a crime that proves to be the first strike of a serial killer -- as well as the threat that the daughter of a Kurdish family may be in line for an honor killing unless Anna and her colleagues can intervene in time. Meanwhile Anna must cope with her dysfunctional younger brother and, for that matter, her increasingly dysfunctional self . . .
And where does the Aztec god Huitzilopochtli, images of whom are found in the clothing of the murder victims, fit in?
A major problem with this novel is that the answer to this question is: Well, not really anywhere, really. The legend of Huitzilopochtli has nothing to do with the murderer's motivation; it's just a bit of a coincidence that Huitzilopochtli came into the picture at all, in fact. The only reason he's introduced is as ersatz "atmosphere."
This sense that bits of plot have just been thrown into the mix without much thought as to whether they should be there at all permeates the novel as a whole. As another example: In a minor plot strand Anna and a female colleague, Sari, are being pestered by anonymous obscene text messages. Late in the book, Sari discovers who the culprit has been -- not through deduction but just through a hunch -- and then . . . the whole matter is, plotwise, just dropped. Huh?
The amateurishness of the plotting infects the writing, too -- and, to be honest, the translation. The whole novel could have done with a decent copy-edit to get rid of clumsinesses, eliminate the habit of characters to smile, sniff or frown words at each other (they tend to shout or even scream at each other a lot, too, as if in a sandpit rather than a police department), clear up a plethora of annoying little continuity errors (we're told a call arrives on Anna's phone but it's soon evident it actually arrived on Sari's phone -- that sort of thing), and much else besides. I could, too, have done without such goodies as the gratuitous detailing of Sari's post-coital mopping-up operation.
There's a tremendous crime novel in here trying to get out, and I'm told the later volumes in the series more than fulfill the promise of this rough-edged debut effort. I'm tempted to give them a try.

Tvarkingas socialinis detektyvas, kuriame ne tik taškosi kraujas, bet ir atskleidžiama nefasadinė Suomijos (o kartu ir kitų Vakarų šalių) pusė: skirtingų kultūrų ir tikėjimų susidūrimas, kuris prasideda stereotipais ir dažnu atveju baigiasi smurtu, vienatvė, kurią bandoma slėpti darbu arba skandinti alkoholyje. Įdomiausia ir šiurpiausia visgi yra tai, kad kartais kitų žmonių, esančių šalia mūsų, elgesio motyvai gali būti mums visai protu nesuvokiami, bet jiems padiktuoti širdies (jeigu galima sakyti, kad trijų žmonių žudikas turi širdį).
“Dauguma mūsų, tikėk arba ne, yra normalūs žmonės. Kai kurie krikščionys laikosi lygiai tokių pat griežtų normų. Bent jau kai kurie Pietų Sudano gyventojai. Be to, Suomijoje taip pat yra labai didelė smurtavimo šeimoje problema, kurios, suomių nuomone, net negalima lyginti su mūsų problemomis. Suomių problema kyla “tik” dėl alkoholio, ir viskas, kas kyla dėl alkoholio, yra iš esmės pateisinama arba bent jau suprantama.”

There was lots to like about this debut crime novel: compelling characters with interesting back stories and interactions between colleagues. Unique insight into the lives of immigrants in Finland and the casual racism they are subjected to (sometimes not all that casual, almost shocking in its directness). A complicated and realistically paced investigation, spread out over weeks even months, seeming to hit a lot of dead ends, rather than all being tied up neatly within a matter of days.
However, perhaps the author is trying to incorporate too much in her debut novel, so there are too many strands there, some of which do not add much to the story (the Kurdish family's story feels like it belongs in a different book), and the final solution/identity of the killer does seem to come a bit out of the blue.
Anna Fekete is an attractive main protagonist, although her rapid descent from committed marathon runner to pizza-eating, non-exercising and nicotine-addicted insomniac is perhaps a bit too dramatic over a period of just a few weeks. Still, who knows what effects the Northern darkness will have on people, especially those originally from a more South European descent.

I am a huge fan of Scandinavian crime novels, but found I had never before read one set in Finland – this needed to be remedied ASAP! Kati Hiekkapelto is a new author for me, and I am happy to say that I really enjoyed her writing style. In particular, main protagonist Anna Fekete is a well-drawn and intriguing character who really drove the story. Born into a Hungarian minority group in Yugoslavia, Anna had to flee the war-torn country with her parents as a child and has spent most of her childhood in Finland, yet still remains an outsider, identifying herself more with her Hungarian background than her Finnish one. She recently left her old workplace to commence a new position as criminal investigator in the same northern Finnish coastal town she grew up in, where her estranged brother is still living. Starting her new job knowing that she was hired to represent an ethnic minority in the workforce, Anna knows that she will be likely to battle prejudice and pressure from some colleagues, who are resenting the ever-growing number of migrants coming to the country. However, she has not bargained with being partnered with the worst offender, Esko, who is not afraid to tell her how he feels about “bloody foreigners” in general.
Anna’s migrant background and her feelings of constantly being torn between her heritage and her new adopted country rang true for me, and added a depth to the story missing in many other crime novels. Without Anna, the murders themselves, whilst interesting, would otherwise have blended into the fray of many other similar stories. As an added bonus, Hiekkapelto also introduces an interesting side story to the main murder-mystery, that of a teenage Kurdish girl who has made a phone call to emergency services to call for help but now claims that this has been a misunderstanding. Anna knows that many of these girls disappear without a trace, forcibly married off to strangers by their own families, and suspects that the girl is too afraid to talk to her for fear of retribution from her parents.
I loved the way Hiekkapelto introduces topical themes of immigration, racism and cultural differences into her story, with Anna representing one of the migrant groups who have assimilated well into their new country but still struggle with adversity, whether through feeling torn between their two home countries or struggling against people’s prejudices. The author’s spare and direct prose perfectly creates the bleak and chilly atmosphere so typical of Nordic noir, which is one of the reasons I seek out the genre above others. The only criticism I would make is that the translation could have done with a bit of tweaking to read more smoothly, which is an art that is often difficult to achieve.
All in all, The Hummingbird was an enjoyable police procedural with an interesting main protagonist and I will definitely come back to read more in the series.

I previously read the third in this series, The Exiled and liked it enough that I knew I would eventually read others. Some of the praise for The Hummingbird suggests this is more mature than one should expect from a debut. I felt this is better than most debuts, but still a bit rough around the edges.
Presented in italics, this begins with a first person crying out for help, that they would kill her. The girl who has sent this message is the daughter of Muslim immigrants from Kurdistan. Her messages and dialog are interspersed throughout the novel. It is soon clear that this girl isn't the focus of the novel, that there is another young woman who is murdered while out on a running track. The murder is somewhat graphically protrayed.
Anna Fekete, after whom the series is titled, is new on the job in the Violent Crimes Unit. There seemed to be more of her background and her own immigrant status than I needed. Certainly that is integral to who she is and how she relates to others and she to her, but I thought there was too much of it. I do have the next installment which I will read eventually, but I hope this aspect has now been well-established and that I don't need to be reminded of it over and over. Once will be sufficient. There are Hungarian expressions which have not been translated. I am assuming these appeared as Hungarian in the original Finnish and therefore remained. I looked up only one of the expressions which turned out to mean "dammit". I just skipped over all of the others which I decided I didn't need to understand.
Other than the first person accounts by the young girl, nearly all of this is from the viewpoint of Anna. There is one chapter from the viewpoint of a victim and the perpetrator. The perpetrator isn't named, however, and it isn't until the last about 15 pages that we know who wielded a high-powered rifle. There are bits of conversation between the officers that are entirely "off screen" and about which we know nothing - sometimes not even that the conversations took place. This was OK - eventually we learn it all - although I think I prefer the type of mystery where the reader tries to solve the crime alongside the detectives.
In the end, this doesn't live up my earlier read by this author. 3-stars.
Presented in italics, this begins with a first person crying out for help, that they would kill her. The girl who has sent this message is the daughter of Muslim immigrants from Kurdistan. Her messages and dialog are interspersed throughout the novel. It is soon clear that this girl isn't the focus of the novel, that there is another young woman who is murdered while out on a running track. The murder is somewhat graphically protrayed.
Anna Fekete, after whom the series is titled, is new on the job in the Violent Crimes Unit. There seemed to be more of her background and her own immigrant status than I needed. Certainly that is integral to who she is and how she relates to others and she to her, but I thought there was too much of it. I do have the next installment which I will read eventually, but I hope this aspect has now been well-established and that I don't need to be reminded of it over and over. Once will be sufficient. There are Hungarian expressions which have not been translated. I am assuming these appeared as Hungarian in the original Finnish and therefore remained. I looked up only one of the expressions which turned out to mean "dammit". I just skipped over all of the others which I decided I didn't need to understand.
Other than the first person accounts by the young girl, nearly all of this is from the viewpoint of Anna. There is one chapter from the viewpoint of a victim and the perpetrator. The perpetrator isn't named, however, and it isn't until the last about 15 pages that we know who wielded a high-powered rifle. This was...OK. I enjoyed aspects of it and it had a satisfying number of twists and turns though the final one felt a bit rushed. However, I couldn't really buy Anna's descent from super-sporty running enthusiast to chain smoking insomniac over such a short space of time! It certainly wasn't terrible but neither did it pull me in enough to want to continue with the series.

Jag vet inte om jag har läst någon finsk deckare tidigare, men jag vet att jag länge har velat göra det. Av en händelse så hade jag Kolibri i hyllan, den dök upp här som en överraskning för ganska längesedan. Första delen i en serie är det också, men det verkar som att förlaget slutade översätta efter andra delen.
Den här har ju klassats som deckare, men som deckare är den varken speciellt bra eller spännande. Det den vinner på är skildringen av hur det är att vara invandrare. Trots att författaren inte verkar ha någon invandrarbakgrund så känns den delen trovärdig. Personligen så tycker jag att det hade varit intressant att veta om det har varit någon diskussion om detta i Finland, om att man skriver om något som man själv inte har personlig erfarenhet av. Som det alltid brukar bli här i Sverige.
Kolibri är lite småtråkig och den är väldigt mörk, med mycket ångest. Här blir mordfallen som en parentes och har inte alls det fokus som jag hade önskat. Det är inte speciellt mycket utredning, utan mest tid ägnas åt Annas ångest, fylla och ångest igen. Det är nog mer en lyckoträff och slump att de löser fallen.

CULTUURVERSCHILLEN REDDEN HET ZEER MATIGE VERHAAL
Op Fekete (spreek uit: fèkètè) Anna's eerste werkdag wordt een vermoorde vrouw gevonden. Van rustig inwerken is geen sprake, ze moet meteen aan de bak in het team dat de moord gaat onderzoeken. Niet alle collega's zijn blij met de komst van de 'buitenlandse' Anna: Hongaarse, geboren in voormalig Joegoslavië, sinds haar tiende jaar in Finland verblijvend en volledig ingeburgerd. Na de eerste moord volgt een tweede, het onderzoeksteam zal de krachten moeten bundelen om tot resultaten te komen.
Tegelijkertijd speelt het verhaal van de Koerdische Bihar, die uit angst het slachtoffer te worden van eerwraak de politie belt en vervolgens beweert dat er niets aan de hand is. Anna vertrouwt dat niet.
Twee verhaallijnen dus. De moorden vormen de hoofdmoot, het verhaal van Bihar speelt tussendoor in aparte hoofdstukken.
Kati Hiekkapelto beschrijft in De kolibrie standaardmoorden, voor zover daar een standaard voor is, standaardonderzoek, standaardsituatie op het bureau (met de een kun je beter door één deur dan met de ander), geen verrassingen. Hoofdpersoon Anna heeft daarentegen een aantal verrassende karaktereigenschappen en vertoont soms niet-alledaags gedrag; daarover in deze recensie uit de school klappen zou jammer zijn. Anna en haar collega's leren we goed genoeg kennen om nieuwsgierig te worden naar deel 2.
Bihar is de hoofdpersoon in haar eigen verhaal, dat in een ander lettertype tot de lezer komt. Schrijnend, tot nadenken stemmend, en daarmee een belangrijker element in De kolibrie dan het standaardmoordverhaal. Maar toch ... Waarom is Bihars verhaal zo knullig geschreven? 'Me ouwelui', 'me moeder' en meer irritante taalkromheden. Bihar is een intelligente jongedame van bijna 18, zij zit in de eindexamenklas van een elite-vwo-school, haalt hoge cijfers, er is geen enkele reden om te veronderstellen dat zij een brief/verklaring zou schrijven op puberniveau, in jongerentaal. Dat komt slordig over.
Aantrekkingskracht van De kolibrie zit hem vooral in het feit dat het boek in Finland speelt, tamelijk onbekend terrein voor thrillerlezers. Aanvankelijk heb je tijdens het lezen het gevoel dat de locatie ook overal elders zou kunnen zijn, maar allengs sijpelt de Finse cultuur door, die extra naar voren komt door de verschillen met andere culturen te benadrukken. Finland kent vluchtelingen uit vele landen, integratieproblematiek is een actueel thema. Anna is het schoolvoorbeeld van een praktisch honderd procent geïntegreerde, haar broer slaagt daar echter niet in, is de Finse taal niet machtig, en haar moeder is allang weer terug in Hongarije. Dié problematiek wordt uitstekend geschetst door de auteur en maakt De kolibrie spannend. Het thrilleraspect alleen is onvoldoende.

Po galais, šitas detektyvas jau taaaaip seniai namuose gulėjo, o kur dar faktas, jog su šia tyrėja jau išleistos net trys knygos, visos mano namuose, o aš dar jų neskaičius? Taisau padėtį.
Ana Faketė yra ne iš kelmo spirta. Pakeitusi profilį ji atvyksta į naują darbovietę, kurioje teks tirti smurtinius nusikaltimus. Jauna detektyvė įmetama į gana įdomų kolektyvą, tačiau jos partneriu paskiriamas šlykštoko būdo kolega, kuris jai kartina gyvenimą ir sunkina darbą. Visi nusiteikę, jog Anos karjera prasidės ramiai ir lėtai, jai bus skirta laiko įsivažiuoti, tačiau... žudikai nelaukia. Pirmą darbo dieną Ana jau priversta vykti į mišką, kuriame bėgimo trasoje rasta kraupiai nužudyta jauna moteris. Po kurio laiko lavonų daugėja, kartu su jais ir klausimų. Beveik tiesiogine ta žodžio prasme – kuo toliau į mišką, tuo daugiau medžių.
Kas patiko labiausiai? Tai, kad be žudymų ir tyrimų buvo gvildenamos opios temos: emigracija, kultūrų skirtumai, lyčių nelygybė, tolerancija (arba jos nebuvimas), santykiai tarp kolegų ir jų įtaka kokybiškam darbui... daug sluoksnių sluoksnelių ir vis juos lupi iki kito lavono ar antros cigaretės tą dieną. Ir šeimos santykiai buvo įtraukti. O kas įdomiausia, veikėjų skaičius visiškai netrukdė skaityt, buvo aišku, kas yra kas. Ne visose knygose taip būna, kartais tiesiog esi priverstas atsiversti puslapį kitą atgal, kad susitikslintum, o čia to nereikėjo.
Buvo daug netikėtų vietų, beveik nieko nenuspėjau ir neatspėjau. Iki vidurio knygos net nebuvo aišku prie ko tas kolibris, irgi vis vertė galvoti, kur čia šuo pakastas... na, paprastai tariant, esu tikrai maloniai nustebinta ir greitu metu planuoju skaityti ir kitas dvi dalis. O jei leidykla planuoja išleisti ir ketvirtąją, plosiu katučių atsistojus!
Ak, nepameluosiu, mane vis tik traukia ta šiaurės šalių literatūra. Kažkas joje yra, ir ypač trilerius jie moka suregzti. Šis suomių autorės detektyvas manęs nepaleido iki paskutinio puslapio.

azt hittem, soha nem fogom kiolvasni. és nem tudom, mikor járt a kezemben utoljára ennyire rossz kriminek álcázott melodramatikus és modoros iromány.
a krimi-szál, már amennyi volt benne, teljesen középszerű. semmi ötletesség, csak pár véres gyilok. gondolom, azzal, hogy valami azték emberáldozatos dolgot idekevert, egzotikus akart volna lenni. nem sikerült.
a menekült-kérdés most kényes téma mindenhol, Finnországban is. megkarcolgatta a felszínt azzal, hogy egy kurd családot tett meg egyik szálnak, és a főszereplő szerb származású nyomozónőt a másiknak. vannak idegenből ideszakadt ismerőseim, és egészen biztos, hogy aki már 7 éves kora óta itt van, arról senkinek nem az jut eszébe először, hogy bevándorló. aki meg később jött, sem azon siránkozik folyamatosan, hogy ő bevándorló. Anna állandó nyivákolása a szerbségéről, ami időnként átment magyarságba, erőltetett volt és unalmas, mint ahogyan az egész nő maga is.
a karakterekkel volt a legnagyobb problémám. senkit nem sikerült megkedvelnem, ami egy dolog, de senkinek nem sikerült elérnie, hogy egy kicsit is érdekeljen a sorsa, az meg főleg nem, hogy mit gondol. ez az állandó idézgetése a gondolatoknak külön bosszantó volt, mert vagy nyígott valaki, vagy hót baromságokon gondolkodott, ami nemhogy a nyomozást nem vitte előbbre, de ha még tart a könyv, én is kemény depresszióba süllyedek tőlük. arról nem is szólva, hogy ha nem valamelyik szereplő lelki bugyraiban merültem el, akkor az írónő költői vénájával szembesültem, aki képes fél oldalakon keresztül, fejezetenként az őszön merengeni. meg még közben is időnként.
az év legrosszabb élménye volt ez nekem.

Die auteur was mij niet bekend maar heeft mij aangenaam verrast, ik begin denk ik een fan te worden van de scandinavische boeken en auteurs ;-) Dit hier was het debuut van de "finse queen of crime" en het is mij heel goed bevallen, heerlijk boek om te lezen.
Wat ik ook mooi vond was het feit dat het boek verteld over enerzijds Anna Fekete, die is begonnen als politierechercheur en direct terecht komt midden in een opzienbarend moordonderzoek en anderzijds over het koerdische meisje Bihar die kopzorgen veroorzaakt.
Een mooi debuut en krachtige misdaadroman/thriller.
Ik zoek zeker haar volgende boeken op en lees meer....
