Episode 2 of the New BBW Shifter Series The werewolf is just the start of Harper Bailey’s bad day…. Curvy Harper Bailey loves bad boys, but Levi Harris might be one step too far. Within a short time of meeting him, her car was stolen, a grenade blew through their hideout, and several men with ugly guns tried to shoot them. And the super-sexy Levi himself turned into a wolf—at the most inconvenient time.
But she’s in for it now. The vampire mafia will find out who she is, if it doesn’t know already, so Levi insists that she stick with him as they try to get the data he stole into the right hands.
Harper is usually game for anything. But never has she played with so much to lose.
Second Installment of The Alpha's Captive Serial 1. That Alpha's Captive - Part 1 - 14,500 words/61 pages 2. That Alpha's Captive: Pursuit - Part 2 - 20,000 words/84 pages
I write steamy paranormal romance, particularly vampire and shifter/werewolf right now. Check out my two free series starters, Life Blood and Taken. :)
I most often compare my work to Twilight meets 50 Shades (my vampires in Cora's Choice are more dark and angsty, and the S/M elements grow more and more pronounced as the series progresses), but the names that readers most often mention are Anne Rice and Sherrilyn Kenyon.
In Cora's Choice, Cora's Bond, and the following series, I wanted to show a heroine's journey from ordinary girl to someone super tough. This is a journey of months--years, even. So many stories start with an Anita Blake-type, able to kick ass and take names from the first we meet her. I thought it would be awesome and really interesting to show someone becoming that person through tiny changes that build on each other.
My world puts a different twist on everything from vampires (they're alive) to elves (aliens) and demons (interdimensional djinn). The Alpha's Captive series features a kickass heroine out of the gate, while Cora's Choice series--followed my Cora's Bond and others--has my "big" character story line.
Yes, there's an HEA. :) But the story keeps going on!
Since this is a serial and I more or less read all the books in one sitting, I'm reviewing these books as one. All the books follow wolf shifter Levi and Harper, his voluntary hostage. Levi never really kidnapped Harper, she kidnaps herself. He steals her car and seeing as much as she loves the car, she jumps into the car while Levi is driving away.
The characters have good chemistry and hit it off from the very first page. Both Harper and Levi are a little dense as none of them ever consider their phones having GPS that can be tracked. It's something I saw from the very beginning, and it annoyed me that it never dawned on them even though the bad guys kept finding them time and time again. Seriously, how stupid can these characters get? I kept shaking my Kindle in hopes to shake some sense into these characters. True fax.
Levi and Harper kept putting themselves in these crazy situations that made me want to smack them upside their heads. There is a lot of drama and even more action in this story. At times it gets to be a little too much. It's that “too much” that pushes the books into annoying at times. An engaging story, though I'm not completely happy with how the story ended. It feels unresolved. Open ended.
I am giving an honest review of this novella for the author V.M. Black. This is #2 of the series by the author and it starts where #1 leaves off.
Harper and Levi are trying to find shelter away from the vampires and humans that are chasing them. Now poor Harper's baby gets into a few scrapes with a couple bullet holes and Levi is going to have to fix her baby up.
This part 2 has more drama, a few laughs and more action then part 1. The story line is still flowing smoothly as part 1 was. I can't wait to see what happens in part 3 of the series.
This novella has more sexual content in it then part 1 so this is still for mature paranormal book readers.
Still really liking this series. it is fast paced and does not leave a whole lot of down time, which I feel works really well for this story. The lack of information on the vampires though is a little bit disappointing . Information is given occasionally but nothing to give you a full understanding. Hopefully this changes in the next couple of books.
My Thoughts - 4 out of 5 Unicorns - I really liked it!!! ***Received a copy of the ebook in exchange for an honest review
The cover is still sexy :) Levi is welcome in my house anytime ;)
You should know this is a serial, and it should be read in order. It is definitely adults only as it has some very very steamy scenes. This particular episode is no longer available on its own, you have to get the bundle of the first 3 books or the bundle of the whole set of 7 to read it :)
Levi and Harper are both still unsure about trusting each other, but both feel this uncharacteristic pull towards each other and are just going with it. I know this episode is supposed to be longer, but boy was it over quick. I think it felt that way for me because I was so engrossed into the story. Tons of action, gunfire, car chases, and more.
I definitely recommend this serial to anyone who enjoys completed serials and of course wolf lovers. I think if you enjoyed book 1, you will not want to pass up this one or if you are already a fan of V.M. :)
Book 2 was so good. I liked the first book, but I really liked book 2.
Black gives us a lot of action. The storyline really starts to develop. The characters and their relationship with each other progresses, too.
The Wal-Mart scene was great. Really, it was perfect. I could imagine how it played out as if I were there watching it unfold. Black gives us some humor, too. I caught myself giggling more than once. Another aspect that I really liked was the amount of substance Black was able to put in such a short book. A lot of times a romance novella is wam-bam-thank you-ma'am. Not the case here. I think Black will give us even more depth come book 3.
I have a number of pros and cons about this book.... in the Pro column, it's racy (REALLY racy), it has a heroine who doesn't back down from much, a lusty werewolf hero on the run, and a bunch of bad guys determined to run them down. It's good reading!
In the Con column, it's only 68 pages, only a bit longer than its predecessor, 'The Alpha's Captive', which is only 51 pages. I've seen a number of books written in this 'serial chapter' manner, and I really don't care much for it. I want books that I can sink my teeth into, and enjoy for more than ten seconds. I read very quickly, and books like this are only an appetizer for me. I hope this is a trend that won't last too long...
V.M. Black gives her readers what they want and so much more. The Alpha's Captive series is captivating, intriguing, and well-written. The characters, the storyline and discovering all the dirty secrets suck you in and keep you on the edge of your seat. There are so many unknowns to these stories that just when you think you know what is going on, Ms. Black adds another twist to throw you off. Harper and Levi have a chemistry that leaps off the page. You can feel the sexual tension between them and you can't wait to see if anything more will come of it.
Running for their lives can be hot While running for their lives, thing still heat up for these two. Levi’s not 100% sure that the info he has will be able to keep them safe. And the Vampires are relentless and want them dead. Will Levi get the card and info to the right people? Will it save their lives? Well written action packed and very entertaining to read. I won a free copy of this book.
Levi and Harper are running from the vampire that wants the SD card back. Levi needs to see what's on it so he cand send it to his friend Chay. Another dangerous adventure puts them in another situation they need to find a way out of. Can they make it out of this without losing each other in the process. Harper not sure she is making the right decision by staying with Levi. Levi makes her feel alive and this is for a good cause.
Glad I stuck it out for the rest of the serial. It picked up right where #1 left off. So, for me the secret is to read the whole collection. Doing it a chapter a month would make me bonkers. Anyway, curvy, feisty Harper is on the run w/ a werewolf. They are being hunted by a vampire mafia type boss due to the fact that Levi, the werewolf, stole something that will hurt him in the bank account. You really want to start at the beginning of the serial.
I should say that I'm not really big on sexy games. Sometimes I enjoy them, sometimes I don't. V.M Black does right good sex scenes though. The focus of this novella, essentially, is Levi and Harper vs The World that's out to get Levi and NOW Harper.
I like this one better than the first novella and I will read the rest later.
I read the first 2 books in this serial. Unfortunately, it's not my type of story. It is mostly action with a little bit of sex and even less romance. The heroine is a very strong character. I don't plan on continuing.
Harper and Levi flee the farmhouse looking for a SD reader, instead they find a vampire and a group of humans after them. After being chased relentlessly and almost losing Harper, Levi figures sex is the best way to warm up. I agree!
