A weekend at a cosplay convention turns into a dangerous quest to find the missing superstar.
Elsie Graham and her friends are looking forward to a wild weekend of cosplaying, geeking out, and letting loose at WyvernFest, a small but popular cosplay convention in Glenville, Indiana. After leaving a toxic relationship, Elsie is eager to have fun and feel like her old self again, but the group’s plans take an unexpected turn when the headlining celebrity guest — Elsie's idol, Tamara Jenkins — fails to show up to her events, and no one knows where she is.
As rumors swirl and tensions rise, Elsie fears the worst when she and her friends delve deeper into the mystery and realize there may be more at stake than just finding a missing celebrity. Unsure of whom they can trust, the group must work together to unravel the truth and bring Tamara home safely before it's too late.
A cozy cosplay mystery that will have you guessing til the very end!
I received an ARC copy of this book, and I really enjoyed it! In addition to having an engaging mystery, it did a good job of making me feel like I was part of the events. It did take me a bit to feel like I heard the main character's voice and get a good sense of who she was, and I do prefer more of a "show, don't tell" in the books I read, but overall, this was a great niche read for folks who enjoy comic/pop culture conventions and has a great hook and great energy!
I really liked this book. I liked it because it is an exciting story, well-written, and an easy read. You see, I tend to choose heavy histories and biographies, and I've been working on my other current book for over a month. "The Con" was a delight. I read it all in one day.
The opening sentence, "It's ironic how pretending to be someone else can help you figure out who you really are", is almost exactly what I told an audience last week who had come to hear the community theater kids sing selections from "The Descendants". I used the word "paradoxical" instead of ironic.
No spoilers here, except to explain that the title refers to a cosplay convention, not to a story like "The Sting". Read it for yourself. You'll be glad you did.
This book took me a few chapters to get into, and I honestly considered not continuing, but I'm glad I did! I liked it more, the more I read.
My favourite parts of the story were actually the flashbacks. They weren't all nice memories, but the flashbacks really helped to learn who the characters were, and how that affected their actions in the present.
Some of the dialogue felt a bit cheesy, but the plot was fun, and though I did predict who the antagonist was, I still enjoyed the ride.
I usually have so much criticism for any book written about conventions or cosplay but this one was flawless. It caught the spirit of the community in such a positive way and the mystery was impeccable. I loved the characters, Elsie was so relatable. One of my top reads this year.
Wasn’t expecting a comic-con indie book to craft such compelling characters and to take me on such a fun journey. An absolute pleasure to read from start to finish. Expect great things from this author in the future!
Thoroughly enjoyed in a few hours. Kept me guessing till the very end! Really enjoyed the unique setting and I had a few no way moments! Nice easy page turner
