He's built walls higher than the Montana mountains.
I'm about to tear them all down.
The moment Jake Foster's dark eyes lock on mine at that tiny mountain airport, something electric ignites between us. He's all brooding intensity and raw masculinity, a mountain of a man who looks like he could break me in half... or make me beg for more.
I'm just here for a girls' trip. Meeting a grumpy, gorgeous ex-military mountain man wasn't part of the plan.
But one taste of Jake's forbidden touch, and I'm addicted. One night of passion under the Northern Lights, and I'm ruined for anyone else. One glimpse of his hidden tenderness, and I'm falling hard and fast.
He says he prefers solitude. He says he doesn't do relationships. He says a city girl like me could never belong in his world.
But the way he touches me? The way he looks at me? The way he growls "mine" against my skin? His body tells a different story.
And after he risks everything to protect me?
I know one thing for Jake Foster isn't just my mountain man.
He's my forever.

A light, easy read with a heart-warming and steamy storyline. I usually prefer slow-burn to insta-love, but the author does a good job of making the situation believable, not too rushed or abrupt. Both the MMC and FMC have some baggage that is touched on, not wholly fleshed out, and could be more developed, but it works fine with the book's desired length. Overall, the writing is engaging, and the story is enjoyable.

This novella was surprisingly engaging, and I finished it before I realized. The plot is easy to connect with, making for a fast-paced and engaging read that is difficult to put down. Isabella and Elena accompanied Rachel on her trip to Montana to see her brother, Ryder, fueled by a shared desire to escape their New York lives for a bit. Because I’d read her in “Lord of Little Italy,” I already knew Isabella’s character, which was wonderful. Picking the women up from the airport should have been a mundane task, but Jake was immediately and utterly captivated by Elena’s beauty and charm from the moment he saw her. Close proximity, due to a temporary snowstorm, makes it difficult for them to avoid each other. Despite their intense attraction, both are hiding things about their pasts that could damage their growing relationship.
There’s something fun about watching an accomplished and independent woman fall for a man who doesn’t believe he deserves her. This talented author has written many enjoyable books, and this one is another great addition. The HEA was ideal for everyone involved, and I’m excited for Rachel and Garrett’s story next.
This is a quick, steamy read that is a perfect break from real life. I encourage you to read this series, and then return to this author’s catalog for more addictive and engaging reads! I was fortunate to receive a complimentary copy of this story (thank you), and happily leave my review.
Jake Foster enjoys his simple, quiet life spent in the mountains of Montana after he got out of the military. Working on a hand-carved bed frame in his workshop, he gets a call from his buddy Ryder asking if he can do him a favor and pick up his sister Rachel Winston and her friends from the airport before the storm hits. He sees Rachel first, followed by Isabella he recognized from a picture, but the last woman made his mouth go dry! She moved like a dancer, graceful and beautiful. This must be Elena Esposito, Rachel’s former college roommate who owns a New York art gallery. Her gaze missed nothing as she looked around with her artist’s eyes just as the snow started falling. Even her laugh has his body responding and re-thinking about the joy of living alone now that he’s seen Elena.
Jake was making sure the generator was in good shape just as the wind howls. Another storm is going to be here faster than they predicted, and Ryder shouts out that the roads are already closing. Rachel has a smirky grin on her face as she tells Jake he has to stay for dinner now. As he was about to head home anyway, Elena asked if he would help making the apple pie since she needed someone tall enough to reach the cinnamon on the spice shelf. Then she spotted a landscape painting she recognized and Jake told her he had bought it for Ryder when he moved in. Jake told her all the artistic features he admired and she was in awe at his knowledge of the artist’s work, a definite fan. But the two of them also have secrets they don’t want to share. Back home, a wealthy powerful man, Victor Rothschild, demanded she be his and threatened to ruin her if she rejected him. He began stalking her and refused to back off, so it had felt safer for Elena to get out of town. But somehow he was able to follow her to Montana, arriving in a helicopter and holding a gun on her, determined to have her even if he has to take her life. Jake runs across the field toward the sound of the helicopter, having no intention of allowing danger to threaten the woman who has become his “everything”. Will he reach her in time? Can he use his awesome military skills to protect her? And if they survive, how can he ever convince her to stay here and share a life with him?
The characters in this story are fantastic, joking with each other and putting their strong friendship clearly on display. The author keeps the action moving in a perfect way to hold the reader’s full attention as we join their interactions and cheer them on, and care about what happens to them. You will not want to miss this one!

When Ryder ropes Jake into picking up his sister Rachel and her two friends from the airport ahead of an impending storm, he’s less than thrilled to have his quiet morning disrupted. However, for a man who relishes solitude, Jake’s instant, visceral reaction to Elena is pretty much a game-changer—and the attraction is very much mutual. I loved the moment Jake surprised Elena with his knowledge of Western art. It was a perfect reminder that you should never judge a book by its cover! Though their connection crackles with chemistry, when they share a tender, stolen kiss, Jake’s knee-jerk reaction is to bolt, because he knows Elena isn’t there to stay. Nevertheless, some temptations are impossible to resist. What I really liked was the depth of intimacy they shared, and not just in the steamy moments (though those definitely sizzle!). With Elena’s return to NYC looming, Jake knows he has to pick up his game if he wants her to stay. And believe me, his surprise under the Northern Lights will have you swooning. The happily-ever-after was utterly satisfying and sets the stage beautifully for Rachel and Garret’s story. This is a heartfelt, swoon-worthy read with the perfect mix of emotion, a touch of suspense, and romance! I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
This was fantastic! So cozy and warm and sexy and sweet! This is a full read and has it all in a short but fulfilling package! I love Cindy's books, they're easy to read and there is fire and plot and chemistry between her characters. This is a story I wasn't expecting! Rather, I was loving the fact that this story took place in the mountains.
She came to spend time with friends and escape her life for a time. He had walls that were crumbling as soon as they met.The attraction was done well, as was the plot. I loved how he was able to open up with her and how quietly they went into one another's arms. The attraction was wonderful and it was romantic and sweet as well. Their HEA was great! So peaceful and what a great life to come. And the next book...I'm waiting in anticipation!

Jake (H) has spent years building a quiet life in the Montana mountains. No drama. No complications. Just his work and the peace of solitude. But when he’s asked to pick up his friend’s sister and her two city-girl friends from the airport, everything changes. Because one of those friends is Elena (h), gorgeous, sharp-tongued, and completely wrong for his world. Elena never planned to spend the winter in Montana, but running from trouble in New York left her no choice. A powerful man won’t leave her alone, and distance seemed like the best solution. She expected snowy landscapes and small-town charm—not Jake, the brooding, hard-bodied man who makes her feel things she shouldn’t. The tension between them is undeniable, but when danger follows Elena to Montana, Jake will do whatever it takes to keep her safe. Even if it means risking his own heart.
After a military career and some serious PTSD, he has retreated to the mountain for a quieter life. When his friend asks him for a favor, picking some people up at the airport he doesn’t hesitate to. And when he sees her, he knows everything has changed. She is visiting the mountain with friends, escaping her busy career in an art gallery. The city is what she has known, but Montana offers lots of things she didn’t expect. This is a short story format so you do not expect to get overly detailed character development or complicated plot lines. The other does a good job and giving you what you need to feel invested in these two and their relationship. This is a sweet story, cautious Insta love for both of them. Neither can deny the attraction that they feel and when they let go things get steamy.

Jake gets roped into picking his friend's sister and her guests from the airport. Elena may be from a fancy art gallery in New York, but she specializes in Western art. Jake and Elena are instantly attracted to each other, but I love that their connection goes beyond the physical to their shared love for a famous Montana artist. As they explore their attraction, Jake has to decide if he is willing to let love in his heart after years alone. When Elena reveals she was dealing with a stalker back in New York, Jake fears trouble may follow her to Montana. I like that this book has a touch of suspense, but is low angst with plenty of steam. A promising start to a new series from Cindy Smoke.

That is until he see a vision stepping down the jet stairs as Rachel and her friends arrive from NYC. There seems to be an awareness between them. Follow their path of getting to know each other. Something is bothering Elena, will she tell Jake? Would she be willing to more time in Montana? As soon as she stepped off the plane, Jake knew he was in trouble. Elena was everything he wasn't. Poised and elegant. City to his open country. There was no way someone like her could like a guy like him. And she was going back to the city in a few days. But he was drawn to her nonetheless. Then they bonded over southwestern art. He showed her the Northern lights, and talked about his father. And when her life was threatened, he didn't hesitate to protect her with his. This was a good story, with an unexpected connection, and a fiercely loyal ex- military man who found what he thought he would never have.

Jake is book 1 in the new Heart River Valley:Montana Protectors Series by Cindy Smoke
After his career in the military ends, Jake Foster moves to Montana, convinced he is best meant for a life of solitude. But when he meets Elena, all of those plans quickly change.
Author Cindy Smoke writes sweet steamy instalove stories that you can read in just a couple of hours, this is a perfect example. There is always chemistry between the couple and a good light enjoyable story as well. I have read everything she has written and am excited for this new series.
ARC was provided by Booksprout, and this is my honest review.
We are being treated to a new bunch of grumpy, alpha men. ( good times) Ex military Jake wants nothing more than to live the rest of his days alone in the Heart River Valley Mountains but when his friend Ryder asks him to pick up his sister and friends from the airport that idea is out of the window. He gets a glimpse of Elena and he is a goner. Elena is sassy, sweet and running away from unwanted attention. Their attraction is instant and steamy. A short falling in love at first sight story with heat, great network of friends, humour, a touch of drama and romance( for a grumpy loner Jake had the romantic moves down to a tee) can’t wait for Rachel and Garrets story.
What a great fun start to the new series. This is a short read that you can enjoy in one sitting.
Jake and Elena are strong amazing characters. I love how they meet and just can't stay away from each other. Their locations and history try to keep them apart. Will they choose to fight for each other.
If you haven't read one of Cindy Smokes books before this is a great book to start.

Jake is the perfect blend of action, heat and heart. A military veteran with deep emotional scars, he has turned to isolation to help himself cope with the memories of war. Enter driven, brilliant, and successful Elena, in town on vacation with her friends. The connection between Jake and Elena is instant and hot! Elena brings issues of her own, and it is so sweet and sexy and fun to watch them work through it all and figure life out. I absolutely loved this sweet novella!

A sweet fast instalove with a city girl who's hiding something and a mountain man with walls as tall as mountains. I enjoyed Jake and Elena's characters. The side characters were funny. Loved the banter. Good start to the series.

Enjoyed this steamy mountain romance, as Jake is awestruck by Elena when they first meet. Liked how she wasn’t intimidated by his gruffness or lack of communication. The big man fall’s first, now all he has to do is convince this city girl, to spend her life in the mountains with him.

I really love these short and exciting hot reads from Cindy Smoke. Great feel-good romance with just the right amount of everything. If only real life could be as beautifully romantic and as much fun as a Cindy Smoke book.
