First Command #2

Second Chances

Rate this book
Humanity’s war with the Coven is going badly.

Fleet simply doesn’t have the ships or the manpower to counter the alien’s vast reserves, so Cole Jackson is hauled out of his self-imposed exile and ordered back to the front. The Admirals are gambling on a miracle; that he and his crew can repeat the success of his First Command by repairing vessels and sending them into battle. And maybe snatch victory from the jaws of defeat.

Fleet has been gathering damaged and deserted ships in a remote system on the edge of human-controlled space. Without transport, Jackson’s crew must travel on an obsolete military simulator, without shields or weapons. When they run into a Coven warship, it’s all Jackson can do to keep them alive as both ships crash-land on the planet.

In a running battle with cyborg warriors, Jackson must avoid alien patrols, build rudimentary weapons, and cobble together some type of ship that would see them escape the death planet and change the course of the war.

Book 2 of a science fiction thrill ride about a crew of young soldiers mustering the courage to fight back against both a vicious alien enemy, and the terrifying void of being stranded in space. It's perfect for fans of Daniel Gibbs, J.N. Chaney, and Vaughn Heppner!

3.5/5. Most of the action was planet side (still exciting) and the end point was anticlimactic in the grand scheme. There is hope for the next book though as the crew return to space!!

jumped the shark

Every piece of fiction, and in particular science fiction, required the willing suspension of disbelief. I ran out of willingness.

DNF

Got to the planetside point and found it ridiculous and pretty much skipped the rest. Check every coastguard and navy ship and you will find an arms locker. In times of war there will always be shipmen assigned as security with access to firearms. The fact that no human or alien has access to firearms is downright ignorant and unbeliavable. I found the whole planetside situation to be boring and contrived.

Well, this second book wasn’t as exciting as the first, but it certainly had its moments. I think we’re working with a bunch of geniuses who have been disguised as lowly engineers, pilots and one bridge officer who’s never stood a bridge watch yet! Either that, or these people are extremely lucky in most every situation they find themselves.

Last time we read about Lieutenant Cole Jackson, he was heading to some fancy hospital to have his injured eye looked at. It had been injured back on the *Freedom* and he’d never had a chance to get it really looked at until now. This time he was supposed to see a specialist that everyone thought could work miracles. Yet, for Cole, he couldn’t! Cole had sat through hours and days of excruciating pain while this supposed “expert” tried everything to repair his eye. And nothing worked.

So, Cole started feeling sorry for himself and all those he had lost when on the *Hood*. He resigned his commission and went to an apartment to see if he could drown all his troubles in alcohol. His best friend, Sergei also took the opportunity to do some teaching at a local college, but at least he was doing something other than wallow in self-pity! That was the situation until Sergei got a copy of the resignation letter Cole had sent to Colonel Osaka. Col. Osaka had definitely rejected the resignation and had ordered Sergei to get the young Captain to his office on the double. So, Sergei had rounded up most of the old crew and they had made plans.

It seems that Col. Osaka wasn’t done with the crew of the “Hood”. No matter what shape Cole Jackson was in, he was going to straighten out and continue on with his war efforts just like everyone else. Osaka didn’t care how many friends Cole had lost or the circumstances; only that the mission he had been assigned got accomplished. And blowing up the *Hood* after destroying an entire Coven fleet had been mission accomplished. Now Col. Osaka had another mission for the enterprising Lieutenant and his supremely capable crew.

So, Sergei with the help of several others, dragged Cole Jackson out of his disgusting apartment, got him presentable and pushed him into Col. Osaka’s office. There Osaka told Jackson that his part of the war was far from over and he didn’t really care how many people Jackson was responsible for dying because everyone in uniform had that responsibility. What Col. Osaka wanted was for Jackson to continue accomplishing his mission as assigned so they could have some chance of winning the war against the Coven.

Col. Osaka gave Lieutenant Cole Jackson another mission. He was to take the remnants of his “Hood” crew along with some engineering students of his choice and get to an orbital station on Raziel Prime. There he was to begin putting back together various derelict starships that had been gathered in this fleet junkyard! Earth was loosing the war with the Coven and they were down to very few fighting starships. Osaka recognized what Jackson crew had done to get the *Hood* in fighting shape, barely, so he wanted more of the same kind of miracles. Raziel Prime was far behind the battlefront so there shouldn’t be any possibility of him and his crew running into a Coven fleet. Cole thought about this mission and figure that he and his crew could handle it and it might not also get everyone killed. He didn’t know if he could go through that again.

So, he gathered his crew and headed to Luna base for transport to Raziel Prime. That’s when everything started going wrong. Their original transport was supposed to be a dreadnaught, the *Resolute*, but while they were trying to get aboard, all the military vessels suddenly undocked from the station and headed out for some emergency reason. Lots of people were stranded including Cole Jackson and his crew. So, they had to find something else.

That something else turned out to be an old, very old training frigate called the *Farragut*. It had been used to train crews a long time ago and should have been mothballed and placed in storage by now. Yet here it was and it had a sunlight engine but no crew to work her. Still, Cole sent Sergei and his engineers aboard to see if it could get them to Raziel Prime and if so, to make ready to depart. This ship was small. The engineering room was just behind the bridge and the bridge wasn’t much more than a large closet. The only other problem is they didn’t have a pilot to fly this ship.

The task of finding a pilot when to Yeoman Stewart, she had a way of doing things like no other. Sure enough, she found a pilot although she was a civilian. And then she wasn’t sure how Captain Cole Jackson was going to react to having this pilot. But, she brought the pilot onto the bridge. When Cole Jackson turned around, he almost fell out of his chair. Standing before him was Anne, the stubborn Lieutenant on the “Hood”, who had saved his life at the last moment. But, Yeoman Stuart quickly introduced Beth Harris, Lieutenant Anne Flarity’s twin sister!

So, yeah, things like this are going to happen throughout this book. It’s one miracle after another. Someone always comes up with a “plan” that will solve their current problem. It doesn’t matter how bad a situation they are in, someone or something is going to be done at exactly the right time to solve the problem. That’s why I believe that Captain Jackson and all his crew men and women are closet geniuses and no one knows it. Oh, some things don’t work out for everyone, a lot more of Cole’s crew are going to get killed, but he will accomplish most of his mission or at least gets to the point where he can start the mission, but he’s not going to do it from space. No, this book takes place mostly on Raziel Prime and there are Coven on the ground with them.

I don’t mind the way this book allows everything to work out for the good guys. That’s the way we all want things to work, but it doesn’t happen that way in real life. But, this book and this series is for entertainment and it does an excellent job of doing that. Book 3, “Trinity”, is now available on Amazon and I’m adding it to my reading list, but not going to read it right now. I need something else for a while.

==[Note: As of 12/03/2023, this will not be published on Amazon since I have been banned from posting reviews for some unknown reason. Once the ban is lifted, assuming it does get lifted, I’ll go back and post this to Amazon.]==

Depressing, Boring, and Ridiculous

First, this is not a space opera. It's a story about a bunch of people trying to survive on the planet surface. General spoilers ahead;
The Coven and our heroes crash land on an obscure planet. The heroes hook up with farmers, town people, and, of course, convicts to try and survive in a small subway. The Coven attack many times, a bunch of the Coven are killed, but they never seem to run out of soldiers. You really have to suspend your common sense to get through this book. If Cole isn't on a ship, he doesn't bring much to the table. Very weak hero. Last thought, this book is overly long. I think the author is trying to get the reader to care about the characters. Unfortunately, all he does is make the story boring.
Did anybody notice the author borrows events from old Star Trek episodes? Does anybody remember Gorns?
I will not be getting the last book. According to reviews, the third book is much of the same.

Missed opportunity.

Technically, I’d say Second Chance was written better than the first book. Unfortunately; there are a lot of problems with Simon’s writing. I think the biggest one is probably him being a lazy writer.

There are often inconsistencies with characters and how the tech works. The Alien foe lacks personality and what character traits are presented are also inconsistent and contradictory.

Glaring plot problem - H2S Hydrogen sulfide, is a heavier than air gas, while it is true the gas has a sulfurous oder, those exposed to it never realize they are being exposed to H2S as it fatigues olfactory senses almost immediately upon exposure.

All that to say, taking refuge in a subway would make for a very short book. Something I would expect a physician to know.

Second chance was a very repetitive book, until the very end where Simon blew past the opportunity to write several very good scenes.

Against my better judgment I’m moving on to Trinity.

The bad: the captain is a shell of himself as we start off this novel; he received no accolades for his tremendous victories, or rejected any, if they were offered. He’s hold-up, wallowing in self pity and PTSD, and not the confident, quick-thinking captain who saved the day in the first novel.

The good: the story takes place primarily on a planet, rather than in space. While this would typically be a negative since i signed on for a space opera and/or a war in space, the change of location actually kept things fresh and enabled the reader to see Cole in a different venue, still being the leader that we know and expect. The first novel was so meticulously plotted by allowing a rookie the opportunity to shine with nothing more than his wits that it would've been very hard to compete with the first novel in space.

The first book, "First Command" was a 4+ star book, IMHO. Kept me interested, wondering what's next and had a (mostly) satisfying conclusion. "Second Chance" was, well, another opportunity to enhance the series and get me hooked for more. Unfortunately, it did not succeed. About 3/4 of the way through with multiple chapters being rewrites of the previous chapter with jarring hints of what's to come, I was ready to bail! I walked away but, reluctantly, came back to finish it. I really didn't care how the heroes coped anymore but had to finish it. OK, a bad semi-conclusion, a cliff hanger and a real threat to have more of the same in the next book. Nope! I'm done and looking for better reads (& writes!).

This book took the team into a very different set of challenges, mostly planet bound. The danger of the Coven was faced in person, not in spaceship battles. The planet's citizens added additional dimensions to the challenges, some good and some bad. Cole Jackson continued to need to develop strategies to thwart the Coven, and his team had to create miracles ... as usual. Working with many non-Fleet private citizens in the planet's surface added many unforeseen elements other than the story. The action abounded, but was ground based warfare. I look forward to Book 3 and a return to space challenges.

This is fun series. It is fast paced and exciting. I especially like the leadership and command and control aspect- as we all know that leaders are born that way. There are natural leaders - who we all know and recognize and are usually pretty good at what they do - and there are "learned" leaders - leaders promoted into those positions - and sometimes they work out, and sometimes they don't. I definitely recommend this series - and will read volume 3. I beseech the author to continue this sag beyond Vol 3.

I learnt from the first book that the author plays 'fast and loose' not only with the laws of physics, but also with those of chance and this has definitely continued in this book. The author takes so many liberties the story becomes almost unbelievable.
Also I’m afraid I found the ‘battle’ for survival on the planet became boring quite quickly and I really wasn’t sure why the author dragged it on for so long, especially as many of the things that happened were just nonsense.
If possible I would have given 1.5 stars.

should be five stars but

The persistent failure of Kindle Unlimited to provide finished books spoiled the read - for me. Homophones galore suggest this was dictated and then not edited. That is part of the publisher role, not the author’s. I don’t think I saw a colon or semicolon, and nary a dash (there are three). Yet this book is less bad in thi# regard than many I have tried to read recently.
Story good, if mostly crazy (even batshit crazy). Just go with the rollercoaster.

Great 2 volume.

Really looking forward to the second volume in this series and it did not disappoint. Now I’m looking forward to volume three which apparently comes out April 22. Sometimes it’s a positive to know that things will eventually work out even though it may not seem so at the time. Looking forward to volume three.

Another great read

Simon writes an exciting tale, with fleshed out characters, a fascinating plot, and always, lots of complications. If you expect this to be a clone of book 1, you will be surprised. Simon throws a changeup pitch, most of the action in this Space Opera is on the ground.

A few typos or V2S errors but well written overall. Draws on familiar tropes so there's nothing new here and it could be a bit more indepth plot and character-wise but for what it is it succeeds. Not as good as the first but an enjoyable Simple adventure and I'll read the 3rd vol as long as it's included on Kindle Unlimited.

This was completely different to the first book. I didn't like it. It was a bit too contrived and the action on the ground wasn't something I was interested in. Sorry, this book could probably be given a miss and you can pick up the story back in space in Book 3.

I tried

The storyline was a little bit long in the regarding planet side, and the storyline within the characters lacked emotion. I’ll be honest I skim through most of the book after the first half and I wish I didn’t have to, but I had to finish it.

Cole is back

Lieutenant Jackson was having a lot of trouble adapting to life as a war hero without any prospects in the Fleet. Sergei drags him out of his misery slightly ahead of the M.P.s to a new assignment for the masters of salvage miracles.

Excellent!

Talk about the cost of victory! This was a bitter pill. "Firetruck!". A good story about sacrifice for the mission. What a way! Read the book, you will enjoy it. It's like James Kirk always said, there's never a no win situation - but there maybe a cost!

Fun read

I find each book in this is mere exciting than the last. Character development is good and the story just flows. Some happenings are quite far fetched but in general the book is a good read.

Hard to put down

Second Chances expanded on what First Command started. I felt a connection to several of the characters and was sad when some were lost. I had a hard time putting the book down and am looking forward to continuing the series.
