The Awakened Therapist: Spirituality, Consciousness, and Subtle Energy in Gestalt Therapy

Rate this book
The Awakened Therapist is an accessible introduction to gestalt therapy through the lens of transpersonal counseling, one that offers a clear and profound account of how to bridge the gap between traditional counseling and spiritual transformation. Bringing new depths to the art of therapy, Harmony Kwiker provides a map for therapists to dismantle the old paradigm of therapist-as-expert and honor their clients’ innate wisdom. The chapters seamlessly weave together elusive concepts of levels of awareness, subtle energy, and spiritual alignment with psychological concepts that are embedded in the theory and application of gestalt therapy. After reading this book, therapists will be inspired and energized while having more substantial breakthroughs with their clients.

First of all, I love whoever designed this cover, so pretty. I did my associateship 20 years ago with a guy who was a Gestalt therapist, and through the years I’ve found myself repeating so many of his little gems. This lovely book is kind of a blend of Gestalt, energy, spiritual awareness and the person of the therapist. As such, it may not be for everyone - if you’re straight CBT or empirical validation oriented, you can probably pass. For myself, I found it a lovely and necessary reminder that I don’t need to direct my clients healing. Reading it (especially in today’s polarized climate) made me feel like I got a big warm hug from the author. Years ago I did a yoga therapy training & this book brought a lot of that non-directive bodily healing back - what’s happening now? What are you aware of now? If you are a therapist feeling inadequate, or like “am I doing enough?” you could benefit from this book. Every therapist who reads this will be a gentler, more loving presence for your clients in the room.
