Bright Little Girls

Rate this book
A wannabe author. A narcissistic musician. A serial killer. An average American girl. Someone tells the story. Someone is the story. Someone steals the story. Someone won’t make it out of the story. Most importantly, someone is always watching. Some watch to help; some watch to hurt. Some watch to be inspired; some watch because they just can’t tear their eyes away.

Eliane Pangolin isn’t like anyone her mysterious follower has ever met. She’s a 27-year-old struggling writer and wannabe dancer fighting an uphill battle with obsessive-compulsive disorder. When she isn’t defying a restraining order by continually writing letters to an old friend, she’s trying to navigate feelings of both betrayal and beguile toward her lifelong male best friend. She lies underneath fake palm trees in her living room with sunglasses on, but also has an old soul that she could swear once rubbed elbows with the Fitzgerald’s on a beautiful Parisian street. If she isn’t in dance class or therapy, she can almost always be found lying in the grass where Zelda Fitzgerald drew her last breath, outside a sanitarium in the mountains of North Carolina where she grew up. Broken and brilliant, trying to navigate mental illness, toxic love and the untimely murder of someone close, readers will love following Eliane just as much as her narrator in the shadows.

A story about art, obsession, guilt, crime and lust for…everything, Bright Little Girls is, at its core, about learning to cope by finding the self, the most elusive character of all. A journey through love and loss, to the great beyond and back, this story will seep into the soul and then ask it to come out and run free — for all to see.

This was a twisted and suspenseful book. It's the kind of book where you just cannot pinpoint what direction it's going. I love that when books keep you on edge throughout.

Elaine wants to become a better author, and dancer. She's also battling OCD and is connected to a brutal crime and trying to cope with that. Someone is watching her, obsessed with her. You don't know WHY and you don't know WHO, which will keep you engaged and pulled in ….to find out the answers! Told through past and present timelines, the author did a great job of building up the plot. Definitely a clever read and I was hooked.

Thank you to the publisher, author and Suzy approved book tours for the gifted copy in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own!

The blurb for Bright Little Girls was so enticing and after finishing the book, I can say that this plot had great potential.

But gahhh, I struggled so much. Time slowed at the outset while I tried to get involved and become invested. I kept waiting for the pull.…but the draw was elusive. And it didn’t change as I pushed forward. No excitement, anticipation, no emotions really.

And the way the story was told didn’t offer much help. Timelines alternated between past & present, but not with an easy fluidity. The narrator was a clever choice and I appreciated that, but I had no connection with her. Maybe I wasn’t supposed to, idk. Maybe she was simply telling the story for us, but knowing her backstory, I felt like I should’ve been empathetic as a reader to her circumstances. But I really didn’t care that much.

Same for Eliane and Jett. They were impossible to bond with. I think they were supposed to come off as deep, intriguing and intellectual. But annoying & egotistical are better suited descriptives. In the synopsis, El is painted as an old soul, broken and brilliant, alluring, someone readers will love to follow. I wholeheartedly disagree, especially with ‘brilliant’ and ‘alluring’. I found her self-absorbed, garrulous and vexing. Her obsession with Zelda seemed unnecessary and desperate. It didn’t offer the kind of insight that lends to flourishing feelings. I didn’t care for her more or understand her better via her Zelda fixation. I was categorically unmoved.

In the end, the SK’s identity is finally revealed, but unfortunately, it was anticlimactic.

It might just be me though. Obviously my main issue was the utter disconnect from the MC’s which I couldn’t control and certainly couldn’t force. The story has great bones though and I’m sure there’s many readers who will enjoy it.

Thank you NetGalley and Black Rose Writing for this arc in exchange for review. I am always grateful.

Thank you to my friend @lornahollifield for an ARC of her new book, Bright Little Girls! I read this book in two days, and I really enjoyed it!

The characters, especially Eliane, are complicated, frustrating, and wonderful. I loved who the storyteller ended up being, and the twist at the end was also perfect. The author is also very talented in describing the small details that might would otherwise go overlooked. It really makes all the difference in developing the story. She does a great job at building up the past to explain the present. It felt very authentic, and it pulls you in right from the start.

Absolutely recommend reading this 5 star book once it’s released!⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Wow! What a roller coaster of a story! This book made me giggle, had me really wondering what’s happening next, loving Eliane and Jett, and so much more. The beginning was a bit confusing going back and forth in the timeline but it still intrigued me. Once you get more of the story and start making your own timeline, it all seems to fall in place and you get sucked in. Great read! Bravo Lorna!

Whoa.

This book throws together a million seemingly unrelated ingredients—serial killer, OCD, artists, stalker, friendship, and a partridge in a pear tree—and somehow turns them into the most unexpectedly delicious literary feast.

With its whirlwind of characters, shifting POVs, and a twisty reveal that hits like a freight train, this story is a chiropractor’s dream—pure whiplash in the best way.

I didn’t always follow the logic behind every character’s choice, but it’s been a long time since I finished a book and genuinely thought, “What the heck am I supposed to do with myself now?”

Other than add Tobacco Sun to my cart, obviously.

Bright Little Girls hooked me from the start. The characters are complex and flawed, especially Eliane, who’s both relatable and unpredictable. The story keeps you guessing with its twists and suspense. It’s a clever mix of obsession, guilt, and self-discovery that lingers long after you’ve finished. Not just a fantastic cover, but an even better story.

Bright Little Girls by Lorna Hollifield is a stunningly written, emotionally rich Southern mystery that lingers long after the last page. Hollifield crafts a compelling story full of secrets, suspense, and the haunting echoes of girlhood trauma.

Hollifield explores themes of identity, survival, and the quiet power of female resilience. The pacing is perfect—just enough slow burn to draw you in, with twists that pack a punch without feeling forced.

Lorna Hollifield’s voice is both lyrical and razor-sharp, and this novel is proof she’s one to watch.

Have you ever read a book and then sat there pondering what to do now that it's over? Nope, just me?

Well, I had the pleasure of receiving an ARC of this book direct from author (all views are my own) and I am so glad I did.

Elaine, a troubled girl, all she wanted to do was dance (and be a better writer), but was battling OCD, and to top it off, she had to learn to cope with her connection to a brutal crime....
And then there was Jett. Jett Jorgenson was her life long best friend and she had to navigate their friendship, all while writing letters to an old friend (no spoilers!)

Elaine's life was being pulled in so many directions, but how would she survive?

Thank you thank YOU so much Ms. Hollifield for allowing me on Elaine's journey and I hope there is more to this story one day.

Please, do yourself a favor, grab this book when it comes out in March, you won't be disappointed!

Lorna Hollifield, the Author of “Bright Little Girls” has written a unique, suspenseful psychological thriller. This is a book of secrets, dark suspense, twists and turns, danger and murder. Someone is watching! The author vividly describes various scenes, and mysterious, dark and dramatic characters. There is a feel of urban fantasy or magical realism, and edgy threatening suspects. The female protagonist, Eliane Pangolin is disturbed and obsessed with writing letters to unusual people, dancing, suffering from panic attacks and obsessive compulsive disorder. She sees a therapist, and is trying to find herself. Somehow, Eliane has a connection with a serial killer. Someone is watching her every movement. Eliane finds unusual and toxic connections to characters such as a narcissistic musician, that is a male friend that she is obsessed with. She has connections to the living and dead, and relates to writing, music and art.

Who is the stalker? Why are they stalking Eliane? The author plays a deadly game of cat and mouse with the readers. I recommend this twisted and suspenseful novel.

Enter Lux, the narrative who takes a little bit for us to figure out just who they are and what story they are telling exactly. We then also meet Eliane, who comes across as the most care free wierd artistic girl that everyone wants as a friend. She doesn't care how she dresses, how she looks, what others think of her, but inside she is struggling. Struggling with her writing career, her life, her past, a past relationship that seems to haunt her, and her friend Lux. Obsessive guilt over that night has long kept her struggling and when her OCD gets so out of control, she needs to go to therapy, she realizes this isn't going to help her. Only she can help herself. Her writing, her words, her poetry and the letters that should have never been sent keep her grounded but this has also caused problems with a few receivers of these letters. Eliane comes up with a plan to start a new, become someone and finally make amends. She needs to come to terms with the past and the most hurtful part of her past. As she heads off to Texas, she's a new person. She has a job again, a few goals and the letters she has written, she has not sent. She confronts the past that stole her words, her emotions and her friend. But Eliane was not the only one visiting someone from their past and the truth of that night is revealed. I could not put this one down. It had so much depth to the characters and emotion, and it was almost lyrical in how it was written. I loved how it was told mostly through Lux and the way it was told and you really felt for Eliane. You felt her struggles, her hardships and her pain of what was taken from her. I would love to know Jett's full story! Looking forward to more from this author. Thank you to the author for the complementary novel and to Suzy Approved Book Tours for the invite. This review is of my own opinion and accord.

Bright Little Girls by Lorna Hollifield

This story kept me on edge turning pages while asking myself: Who is she? Is she real? What is really going on here? Am I falling in a rabbit hole? And oh yes, I did!

Eliane Pangolin isn't like anyone her mysterious follower has ever met. She's a 27-year-old struggling writer and wannabe dancer fighting obsessive-compulsive disorder while coping with her connection to a brutal crime. When she isn't defying a restraining order by writing letters to an old friend, she's trying to navigate feelings of both betrayal and beguile toward her lifelong male best friend. Everything in her life pulls from two directions, creating a tug-o-war she isn't sure to escape.

It’s extremely clever and twisted! For lovers of dual timelines, like myself, I was invested from page one.
Eliane took me by the hand, it was impossible for me not to feel for her. Even after everything, one gets to understand and see so many things.

I loved how descriptive it was and I kept on guessing who was the mysterious narrator!

The psychological component was absolutely necessary, her sessions, OCD and her struggles. It’s a perfect portrait of the inner battles many of us deal with. It’s such a perfect illustration! The letters and of course all the mystery.

I loved this experience and I highly recommend it!

4.5 stars so I will round up to a 5 here.

What a wild ride! The beginning of synopsis goes like this - “A wannabe author. A narcissistic musician. A serial killer. An average girl. Someone tells the story. Someone is the story. Someone steals the story. Someone won't make it out of the story.”

Are you as intrigued as I was?! There’s also a stalker - or maybe two. And alternating timelines - my fave! And a murder that the main character - or subject because she’s also being followed but we don’t really know by who - kind of was involved in or knows important information about.

Twisty and suspenseful and I really just wasn’t sure where it was going - but I didn’t care, I was along for the ride! I needed to know all the Ws - who, what, where, when, and most importantly WHY?!

It kept me up past my bedtime and I read it in about 48 hours which is not common for me!

This dramatic thriller is told through a very interesting point of view.

The book is set in Asheville, North Carolina and outside of Dallas, Texas. It tells about Elianne Pangolin over the course of about 10 years from college until current day.

My favorite part of this book is the voice telling the story. I found it interesting that Elianne is infatuated with Zelda Fitzgerald.

I don’t want to give any part of this book away, but know this is a good one that is multilayered where things are revealed slowly with lots of tense filled parts.

This is such a fascinating novel with interesting characters and a really intriguing plotline. I loved that I couldn't figure out who the narrator was in the past and present timelines, and the way the author incorporates mental health with all of the other suspenseful elements. To say more may ruin the surprises, but I will say that it's so well-written that I got lost in the story, felt like I was a part of it, and couldn't put it down.

I received a gifted copy in exchange for an honest review.

This is my first book from the author. The book for me started out a little slow and I really wasn’t sure exactly where it was going. We really get a lot of backstory and being able to see the characters. I was really invested into seeing where the story would go. The characters felt very real and authentic. I would have loved to have seen more of Elaine and Jett’s relationship - maybe more writing together, as I loved getting to see the letters, poems and songs as mixed media. The ending did give me a surprise twist and again I would have loved for there to just be a little more relationship building as it felt a little rushed.

I think there are some great discussions that could be had from this book and would be great for bookclubs!

Excited to see what’s next from this author!

No officially rating for this book though I do have lots to say. Got this as a blind date with a book. Local author to SC. At first the characters really made me feel like I was back with my psych patients tbh. Just a little maddening, frustrating, and perplexing all tied up together. But book got a little better as it went on. I definitely think there is someone out there that would like and enjoy this but it's just not my cup of tea. Glad I read it but in the end probably wouldn't reread it at least with my current book tastes.

This was a packed and ready psychological thriller or I could describe it as a serial killer thriller as well! Both explain it well, you’ll know you’re in for an absolute ride of a book! I loved how intentional her writing was and the details you’re able to notice along with the plot. I was so impatient to make it to the end and as we got closer it just had my jaw dropping. I definitely recommend this one!

I really did enjoy this book! My mind was blown when I finally got to the part that told me who the killer was! Definitely not someone I would have guessed. I read tons of books, and my favorites are those that surprise me and throw in twists. Its a good read, especially the ending. I didn't think she would get her happily ever after, but she did!!

Dark and introspective, Lorna Hollifield's latest novel, BRIGHT LITTLE GIRLS, showcases her love of the craft of writing with an unconventional choice of narrator, a twisty use of layered timelines that keeps the reader just enough off-balance, and a cast of morally gray characters. This genre-bender blends mystery, psychological suspense, romance, and coming of age with just a dash of paranormal. The nuanced story invites the reader to pull back the curtain and join in an unvarnished search for self. Get your copy and join the search if you dare....
