She is the author of over 130 books across two names, and there's nothing better than sun, sand, and swoon-worthy kisses! I read two of the novels included in the Girls On Fire box set and I will give brief spoiler-free reviews of each and my overall thoughts on the box set!
I started with Inevitable by Tamara Hart Heiner. The description grabbed my attention and it was one of the few books included that I haven’t heard of before so I thought that was a good place to start! Plus it was categorized as suspense and I don’t read enough of those books so I thought it would be original, at least to me. It’s also a bit paranormal but YA suspense is the way I would categorize it as well.
Inevitable was a thrilling suspenseful read. Once I started I couldn’t put the story down. My biggest complaint was that it was too short. I wanted more. I wanted the secondary characters more developed & I wanted more from our heroine, Jayne too. As for a YA this story is perfect, it has a fresh perspective on having it all in High School. Jayne is pretty, smart, has cool parents and no lack of interested boys. She just can’t keep a job or a crush because her special ability, ‘Seeing’ people’s awful deaths, kinda puts a damper on a social life, especially working with the public or trying to date. Jayne can’t tell anyone, because when she does everyone just thinks she’s crazy and it never seems to do anyone any good. Jayne grows leaps and bounds as a character, there are consequences for her actions and I wanted her to conquer her fears and start living her life for her. To take the upper hand and stop fearing her curse/gift.
Inevitable is a 4 heart read and highly enjoyable. I liked the spin on her gift and I loved the characters! Hoping for more to come from Jayne!
I have had The Forgotten Ones by Laura Howard on my TBR list for way too long. I have no reasons for not reading it sooner and I am glad it was included in this box set, because I finally dove in and was enthralled!
This is the story of 21yo Allison, who if I am being honest, is a little too stick-in-the-mud stuffy for my tastes. Maybe I am just too selfish, but Allison thinks she’s doing the right thing by choosing to have no life, in order to take on the care of her schizophrenic mother. It bothered me that she felt she could have nothing for herself especially when her grandparents seem to be raising her right, to be responsible and to have a life/future of her own.
Then Allison’s life is flipped around when her father, whom she’s never met, shows up with stories about the Tuatha de Danaan (the Fae), and that her mother & her are in danger. With that Allison turns into a strong-willed, risk taker in order to try to make things right for the ones she loves. She will do whatever it takes to help her family and that is when the heroine we are expecting delivers.
The story is beautifully written and I may have mixed up characters and had to re-read to make sure I was following correctly, but then again, I was reading with distractions, but I couldn’t put the book down! Then it ended…not with a cliffhanger, but with an ending that promises so much more and lucky for us, book 2, The Stone of Destiny is available now!
The Forgotten Ones is a 4 heart read and I love all things fae! Can’t wait to see where book 2 takes us. Book 1 is Upper YA suitable, nothing too mature.
Now since I rated both books I read at 4 hearts, I am sure you’re wondering why I rated the box set at 5 hearts? Well it’s because I love the idea of packaging 10 kick-butt YA heroines into 1 collection, and you cannot beat the price! I would have paid $0.99 for each of the two books I read in the collection so far, so honestly you are getting a great deal in price plus these books are actually really, really GOOD! Both I read were wonderfully written, well edited, with smart plots and of course kick-butt leading ladies! There are a variety of genres included so even if you read one paranormal, you then can switch it up to dystopian or suspense! Even if you read one or two of these books already, there are a bunch more to read at that stellar price of $0.99! I plan on reading all of the books in the collection, maybe even on a nice sunny beach!
Rating: ★★★★★
The eARC was given to me in exchange for an honest review.
Girls on Fire is a wonderful collection of YA books. It has a little something for everyone. Whether you like Paranormal Romance, Fantasy, Suspense or Dystopia, it's all there.
This anthology was great for me because it exposed me to a bunch of different books that I had never heard of. Here is a little taste of some of the great books in this collection:
Intrinsical is a great paranormal romance. It follows the story of Yara. Yara has always known that ghosts walk among the living. Her grandma is a Waker, someone who can see and communicate with ghosts. Yara grew up watching her grandmother taunted and scorned for this unusual ability and doesn't want that to be her future. She has been dreading the day that this would happen to her. However, it seems as though the Waker gene has skipped her, letting her live a normal life. Until one day, that all that changes. Yara witnesses a dark mist attack a fellow student, and rushes to his rescue. Her act of heroism draws the mist's attention, and the spirit begins stalking her....This story was wonderfully paced and had some really great twists! It was so fresh and exciting and of course, I loved the romance!
Eternal Starling was another great find for me. It follows the story of Evie Starling. Evie has lived a relatively uneventful life, but that is all about to change....Evie moves to Colorado to start college and she meets two mysterious guys. For centuries, Alex and Emil have yearned for Evie, but they each have their own reasons for wanting her. When both men claim to be her soul mate and tell her about an unbelievable past, Evie learns that she's not the person she thought she was. Dealing with a past that she doesn't understand and a future filled with danger, Evie will have to decide who she can trust. But Alex and Emil aren't the only ones who want her. And her soul is about to play a part in an eternal tug-of-war. Ok, seriously you can never go wrong with soul mates, love triangles, or drama!!! This story was so well written that I couldn't help but fall in love with the characters! I can't wait to continue with this series!
The Forgotten Ones follows the story of Allison. Allison has spent most of her life worrying and caring for her schizophrenic mother. She has isolated herself from friends and having fun. Even risking losing the chance at a possible relationship with Ethan.....One thing that Allison never planned on was her father coming back into the picture. He claims that he can help her mother get her mind back, but Allison doesn't trust him. However, circumstances beyond Allison's control will force her to put her faith in her father(Liam) and some truths/secrets will turn her life upside down......This is a high paced fantasy. It has such an interesting plot and I really enjoyed the Irish Folklore! Laura Howard does an amazing job pulling you into the story and gives us such imaginative scenes and landscapes. If that wasn't enough for you, you get hit with some pretty cool paranormal aspects and of course some swoony romance! It's a great start to The Danaan Trilogy!
So, there you go. Just a little taste of what you can expect from this anthology! If you're a big paranormal romance fan like me, I think you will enjoy this one. But, like I said, there's something for everyone!
*****I received a copy of this collection in exchange for an honest review*****
This is a wonderful box set full of different stories each one great and alone worth the price of this box set.
Eternal Starling by Angela Corbett Evie has moved to go to college and is enjoying her time their with friends. She is used to the attention her car gets but not so much used to getting attention herself. Now she has two guys wanting to date her. Alex is the first one she dates and while she grows close to him quickly he keeps a distance from her in many ways. He has secrets and lets her no she is his true soul mate right before he leaves her to keep her safe. She meets Emil next and right away they share something great. He doesn't hold back his feelings for her and he begins to fall for him. Now Alex is back saying Emil is evil and she must be careful. Both guys have fought over her for a long time she finds out. She is special and many would like nothing better to get a hold of her. She thought she was normal but she is far from it and has feelings for both guys.
Evie was a great character she doesn't like anyone keeping secrets from her and she doesn't like being told what to do. She is an outgoing girl who most of the time knows what she wants. Alex is very sweet if at times over protective. His fault is he is afraid at times to get to close. I like it best when he lets go and tells how he truly feels. Emil is the sexy bad boy of the three. He may have a dark side but he also is all about protecting Evie and seeing that she is happy.
I really enjoyed this story as all three characters brought something to the story. Yes it may be a love triangle going on but I can see how it would be easy to be confused with these guys around. Each one in their own way is wonderful. There is secrets to unravel and like Evie at times I wasn't sure what to believe when it came to Emil. I liked all the danger in this book and unraveling the mystery with Evie. She truly comes into her own in this book and it was a joy to read.
I will review more of the books later on but the ones I have read so far are great.
An entertaining boxed set with some of the brightest stars of YA fiction!
A great way to introduce yourself to some series and/or authors, the Girls on Fire boxed set contains stories with strong female characters, and engaging plots. Some of the endings will leave you hanging but this is one summer release fans of young adult fiction won't want to miss!
Allison carries the burden of her mother's mental breakdown on her shoulders. Focused on caring for her family, she doesn't have time for friends or Ethan, the young man who she shared a kiss with years ago.
When her father mysteriously re-appears in her life after being absent since before her birth, she fears the affect his sudden presence will have on her mother's already unstable health.
His tales of the fae people plotting to keep them apart are fanciful at first but then become a scary reality.
This intriguing story has a young heroine that I couldn't help but feel for, as she tries to grow up so fast. The plot is character driven and well written. With a cliff hanger of an ending, this is a series I will be sure to follow!
A Copy of Girls on Fire was provided by the authors in exchange for an honest review.
This was a seriously good collection! Usually you buy these collection thingys and the books are kind of craptastic. NOT the case with this collection. Actually I think this collection is seriously under priced because I would pay full price for most of these books, so buy it! I found all the books to be well written and well edited, also there are quite of few truly original plots in this boxed set. Also there is something for everyone; they’ve got scifi/fantasy, high fantasy, paranormal, suspense, thriller, etc etc. They also cover a multitude of age ranges from 15-21 and that’s really great because girls face different problems at different ages. The only problem that I can find is now that I have read the first books from all the different series in this collection, I now have to buy the rest of the books in all these authors’ series. Ladies, my wallet does not thank you! But my heart does thank you because this anthology was seriously brilliant and provided me with many hours of joy.
I just finished the first book WITCH FALL by Amber Argyle and I have to tell you the book was amazing! I can't wait to continue the series and see what more these incredible authors have in store. the Witch Fall story had me hooked right from the start with its fantasy characters and setting and its singing witches! Amber's whole singing witches take was very unique and something I have defiantly not seen before, it gave the story a whole new edge and made the book soft and gentle and hard and brutal when it needed to be.
the singing not only gave the good guys and whole new edge but gave the villains a whole new angle that no one seen coming! The villains in this one came from everywhere and you never knew who to trust! I totally loved it! it kept you guessing til the very end, and still you were thinking if you could really trust this person or that...lol
this is a brilliant series and if you haven't started reading it I would highly recommend it! it is totally great!
Girls on Fire was an amazing collection of stories all bundled up into one book. Sometimes when you get a bunch of stories together in a collection like this one the books are less than craptastic. Girls on Fire was very different. Each story held a great tale of some kick ass girls who all had amazing stories to tell. Some stories were fast and others were slower but all and all enjoyable. I have to say I don’t want to give anything away but some of my favorites out of the ten were: The Forgotten One’s by Laura Howard which I had loved already and enjoyed reading again, Witch Fall by Amber Argyle, and Elemental Hunger by Elana Johnson. I enjoyed more than those three but those were some of my favorites. Please check out this amazing collection of stories by some even more amazing collection of authors.
If Inevitable, a YA thriller by Tamara Hart Heiner, is any indication of the quality of The Girls on Fire: A Dauntless Collection set of ten YA novels, then it’s amazing! ( I really enjoyed how fast-paced and well written it was and I love the premise- a high school girl who can See certain people’s tragic deaths including her sister’s, boyfriend’s and local women who are being murdered by a serial killer…)
In fact all of the blurbs sound interesting and offer a variety of genres within the YA spectrum including paranormal romance, fantasy, suspense, dystopian, etc. Next on my list is Perception, a YA Dystopian/Romance by Lee Strauss.
From the sound of the blurbs, this set would be perfect for summer vacation.
I loved all of these stories. Some of them are better than others... and one of them I didn't know was the 3rd one so I got a bit confused on that also. However the authors all pulled me into their stories and their writings were amazing. I loved all the different storylines and characters and am excited to see where they all go with their stories and writing. Loved this box set and am so glad I got to read it :)
This was a great set of books. It had a little bit if everything from Dystopian to Fantasy and anything between. The best thing about these was the amazing and strong females in each genre. I had my favorites but each and every one of them was an amazing story in itself.
I got to read the first book in this boxed set and was pleasantly surprised !!! I absolutely loved this book. it was action packed and the love between the characters is amazing . I will be reading the rest of this boxed set very soon and more reviews will be going up . Put this on your TBR . These are amazing authors which will mean amazing books !!!!
I'm still reading more books in the set, but I just finished Laura's Howard's The Forgotten Ones and gave it 4 stars (my review can be found by going to that book on GoodReads). I will update this status as I finish more books in the collection. Still, at 99 cents, this collection is one worth getting.
You can't beat 99 cents for ten books! This was a great deal. I enjoyed all of the stories in this anthology! I had read a few of them before the anthology. I found a few I'm going to have to buy the next book in the series. Highly recommend!
Five stars for the set. There are 10 books. 3 of them I couldn't put down and read in 2 days and i had to work 2 of those days. 4 were good, but nothing special and 3 weren't my type, maybe someone else's. I'm glad i bought the box set. All had strong girls and all were well written.
