"He was a god walking among the ordinary folk, the boot to the ant, the perfect predator, and everyone else less than prey. It was obvious he was used to letting those surrounding him experience how abundantly inferior they were compared to him."
An ordinary small-town woman who hates being caged, a murderous soldier with an overprotective streak, a chosen family that is more dysfunctional than it meets the eye—and a plethora of broken promises. Even if their mission isn’t shrouded in mystery anymore—the circumstances are dire, and when the worlds are on the line, every wrong move could result in absolute failure.
After months of keeping my mouth shut, my biggest secrets are out of the bag. And, of course, the tiny female I’d grown close to couldn’t deal with the truth, ran away and left me to die. Yes, me—as unbelievable as it sounds.
Admittedly, not only Nayana but also a little mishap, including a library and a wayward book, is to blame that she has been kidnapped by a man who wants to see her dead. But she’s in luck—since I need her alive even more than he desires revenge, I’ll have her back in no time, without a doubt.
Doesn’t matter that my magic has been hiding from me ever since my past kicked me where it hurt the most, or that the grandfather I loathed more than Thain was breathing down my neck.
Ivreia has to face the fact that as long as my woman won’t return to my side, the entire world will run red with rivers of blood. Nobody or nothing will stop me—neither my comrades nor my rather frail disposition, and most definitely not the high and mighty tyrant who believes he controls my every move.
"The Chains You Defy" is the second installment in the "A Requiem for Fading Worlds" dark romantic fantasy series, continuing after the events of "The Freedom You Seek". The story centers around Nayana, an ordinary small-town woman with a rebellious streak, who gets involved in a mission bigger than herself, as well as Dion, a flawed soldier with a bad temper and a massive ego, who is trying to leave his past behind. Together with Dion’s comrades, the two embark on a journey into the heart of history and soon find out that sometimes someone has to step up to save everything.
The novel tells a story about unraveling mysteries, self-discovery, uncovering the truth, and maybe even saving the worlds, which actually might be easier than dealing with love.
Perfect for fans of character-driven dark romantic fantasy with a plot that starts small but escalates as the series progresses. Full of slow burn, angst, and romantic tension, mutual pining, found family, mysteries, magic, overcoming trauma, as well as finding your place in a world that already seems doomed. Last, this story is for you if you love a walking red flag—a morally black and possessive male main character whose secrets are as dark as the magic he wields.
This book is 18+ and contains difficult topics. Please mind the trigger warnings.
This novel is written in first person past tense with dual points of view.
It was a power punch, oh this one left with a huge cliff hanger- so if that upsets or just not your thing wait for next book….. it was interesting though to see both characters develop and let go some of their past. Naya was bratty in first book, stubborn in this one sure but opening up. It was a large book so I was hoping it would wrap the story but of course something so huge needs to be in next, so much more history in this one, heartache, and yes there will be blood….
Amazing continuation of the Requiem for Fading Worlds series! Dion continues to be his annoying yet lovable self, and the morally grey turns a shade darker 🖤 Naya still struggles to stay aloof but it's obvious it's only a matter of time before she falls for him 😁 I loved seeing the world(s) expand in the second book here. There's a lot of set up for the third book that occurs, and I'm really looking forward to getting some answers and hopefully a cure in book 3! 🙏 I was internally screaming at several parts! Check trigger warnings before reading, this book is minorly darker than book 1.
Nayana girl just say that you love him🤯😱😂 The slowburn of slowburns. Dion is the whole book just groveling for her love. So in the second book there is a lot more happening.
We meet the villain of villains. I truly felt so much hatred for Galrach especially after Dion showed Nayana some of his past. And after the abuse. But still his plan isn't quite transparent. Love the found family and Thain he is a great spy. There is so much more than the eye can see. I love him. And Altas after he says that Nayana is like a daughter for him🥰 And don't forget about Harc the shadow tendril!
Dion was fantastic! The things he said to Nayana and expressed how he feels about her. Perfection! I am swooning over here. He deserves all the love back. I feel a bit sad for him that Nayana is holding back so much. Yes their relationship is developing but she doesn't say that much about how she feels.
Curious what happens in the third book😁 Would recommend this series for romantasy lovers who like a slower paced slowburn with a morally black/dark grey shadowdaddy who loves only her and will destroy the world to keep her safe!

I’m genuinely so so grateful I got the chance to read it, because honestly? I don’t even know how I was breathing before this series existed in my life 😮💨 A book hangover is coming… and it’s coming in full force!!!
I don’t even know where to begin with this series. The sequel was just as perfect as book 1, and oh my God.. I already can’t wait for the next one!
The writing hits everything I love: extra rich, immersive world building, layered storytelling, and characters that completely steal your heart 🥹
Dion… unhinged isn’t even a strong enough word for you, and I am soooo loving it 👀 Don’t judge me. Naya’s character development is really coming together, and I genuinely enjoyed her!! But the two of them together? So good!!! The banter, the back and forth, the chemistry? Perfect!! 🤌🏻
And the found family? I love every single one of them. I’m begging for spin-offs at this point, please 😩
Overall.. Please, please read this series. It’s absolutely going straight onto my favorites!! 🤤 I signed up to ARC read book 2 and the author provided a summary of book 1, but I’m honestly so glad I decided to be a little late and read both books fully. BEST DECISION EVER.
Book 2 was a lot darker, so definitely take care of your mental health and read the trigger warnings before proceeding! Naya and Dion both experience torture in this book and Dion plays us a symphony in the key of blood. IYKYK. This truly shows us how unhinged he can be. But we also get some perfectly placed spice and the way Dion handles Naya's qualms about sexual experiences (due to her experience in Book1) is ::chefs kiss::. Dion may want control over most things but he relinquishes it all to Naya when it comes to her comfort with sex.
The loss of their bond is heartbreaking and I'm certainly curious to see how they navigate without it on Book 3.
I loved getting to learn even more about the rest of the party in this book. Especially Ireas and Thain. I'm also super curious to see what they learned in the library and think they can do about the tear.

I received this book as an e-arc, thank you! I was really thankful to receive the summary of the first book with this arc as I had not read it. I really enjoyed this book it did in some parts feel a bit dragged out but over I really enjoyed the story line and Dion and Nayanas relationship. I am looking forward to reading the next book to learn what happens next because the cliff hanger left me wanting more .

The Chains You Defy is the 2nd book in A Requiem for a Fading World series by Emily Villain.
As soon as I finished reading The Freedom You Seek Emily Villain claimed a special place in my heart and I knew that she had this unique and special way of telling her stories that would just keep dragging me back with each new book. My life hasn't been the same since the 1st book and has been irrevocably changed with The Chains You Defy.
I loved Naya's character development and growth in this book. I loved watching her go from this stubborn girl with these strict beliefs slowly allow those beliefs start to crumble away. She slowly started to accept or maybe it was she slowly started to entertain her feelings like a small reward. But seeing Naya go from her normal stubborn self into this girl someone who could be playful, felt safe and felt like she could actually trust again. That was truly such a beautiful thing. Naya's healing journey, opening up about her real fears, realizing that she could truly trust Dion and that he could shoulder her trauma and he would support her. That just made her development so stunning and I was just amazed by this.
Dion is one of those rare characters who have managed to change me in all the best ways, he is the quintessence of a morally black character who managed to step his way into not only Naya's world but into my world as well. I know that he is technically is in Naya's world but he is mine and that's all there is too it.
Dion, Dion, Dion. This man has leveled up on so many levels and has grown and developed so much. He was feal, unhinged, monstrous, and he would bath in the blood of Naya's enemies and would laugh describing the orchestra of screams of agony as he delivered his slow, poetic justice to dozens of fae. This man is unhinged in all the best ways and he is my kind of unhinged and I just love him so much.
I loved both Naya and Dion but I really loved them together. They had this amazing banter, playful flirtation that had me laughing. I found their relationship to be the true definition of chaos, imperfection, it was a perfect mess and honestly it suited them to a tee. They could both shine on their own and they shined even brighter when they were together.
A Requiem for a Fading World has been living in my mind, my heart and my soul since I opened The Freedom You Seek and started on this journey. I found that this is a series that is overflowing with life, pain, devotion, and even rage. But it is more than just your typical love story. The Chains You Defy is about breaking the chains that hold you back, its about discovering that family is really the people who we choose to be our family, not those related to us by blood, it's a story about unearthing secrets and embracing the hidden truths we uncover, and it's about finding the strength to come together with our friends and family when the world around us is falling apart and we feel like the sky is falling.
This story is full of chaos, madness, utter devastation and yet at the same time we see the devotion is so raw that it will leave you breathless, we see friendships that heal, love that burns as bright as the sun, and Dion is the gift that keeps on giving, the pain, the bliss, the sweetest torture, and even the most brutal of punishments.
Book 1 in my opinion was sheer perfection. And yet, I saw in book 2 such growth. It was this perfect gut-wrenching, brutal, impossibly beautiful story. The characters continued to grow and develop; their evolution bared their very souls (we saw this most of all in Dion). The mystery continued to deepen, along with the thickening of the plot and the pain... it's a pain that cuts the deepest and the sweetest. But, the one thing that totally shattered me completely? Naya and her inner battle along with Dion's vulnerability.
Then came the ending and the epilogue...the epilogue made me embrace all the pain and even cherish it. This book broke me, healed me, shattered me, and eventually put me back together again in the painful and yet exquisite ways possible.
Please do yourself a huge favor and if you haven't already read the 1st book of this series then pick it up and read it and then read this book. You're not going to regret it. This is one series that you don't want to miss out on reading.
Nayana’s situation goes from bad to worse in this dark and twisty second installment of A Requiem for Fading Worlds. Still reeling from the fallout of events in book one, she finds herself trapped in a deadly game of power and grudges, while Dion, barely holding himself together, tears through every obstacle in his path to keep her safe. With fae politics tightening like a noose and a tyrant pulling strings from the shadows, Nayana and Dion are tangled up in a situation that puts not only themselves, but their very worlds at risk. Their fight for survival becomes a fight against fate itself.
If book one sets the stage, this one cranks everything up to eleven. I devoured it. The writing is richly descriptive without ever bogging down, and the humor threaded through the banter is a lifesaver given how dark things get. Dion remains a standout love interest, a genuinely morally black character who still makes you root for him. And Nayana… “people like me never got a happy ending,” she says at one point, and the text spends the remaining chapters proving her painfully right. The emotional punches hit hard. The character development continues to impress, and the growing web of political and magical intrigue feels purposeful and well-earned.
The cast is large, but everyone remains distinct and memorable, which is no small feat. The stakes keep rising without losing the grounded relationships that make the series work, and by the time the ending arrived, I was already lamenting the wait for book three. I also appreciate how much the book encourages engagement. It's the kind of story that makes you theorize, question, and look twice at every hint dropped. Dark and wickedly sharp, this is a series that knows how to hurt you in the best possible way. And I’m on the edge of my seat, waiting to be hurt again. Many thanks to the author for this ARC. This is my honest review.
5/5 Nayana’s Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day… or series of days. Book 3 when??
This second instalment in A Requiem for Fading Worlds series delivered everything i could want in a sequel. The fundamentals of the mysteries have been revealed, yet more keeps unravelling, enriching the drama. The characters only grow throughout, the circumstances become more dire, and the tension only builds. The Chains You Defy is dangerously darker than the first book but delivers so much.
There is a lot of reflection in this novel. As much as having more history that enhances the world, the dual POV of Nayana and Dion delves into each individuals past torments. Although some scenes highlight the darker elements, sharing their pasts opens the couple to begin healing with the support of each other.
Nayana's character really grew in this novel, especially as she navigates the court of the fae. As a human, naturally, she is weaker, but her will and soul are strong. In the first book, I was on the fence with her character, but in this book, I definitely fell in her favour. She was still stubborn, but she is a lot more open to looking at the other perspective and looking for the reason in action and words. Part of this was her having more trust in Dion and his companions alongside allowing herself to feel safe in their company, enabling her lighter side to come through.
Dion, I have no clue where to start with his character. He is morally black, but his care and love of Nayana shows a softer side that no one else is fortunate enough to experience. When he realises a mistake, the instant he makes it (re-entering the ballroom) he immediately says about correcting it making sure there is no doubt where his affection lies and what he is willing to do to protect the woman he loves. Definitely swoon worthy.
Through all the rage and chaos, Nayana and Dion's relationship just grew through friendship, playful banter, and honesty. It's slow, but the patience is well worth the wait.
Emily's writing is multilayered, emotional, fast-paced, and filled with compelling hooks. I've really come to care about the small band of six through both novels in this series, and the ending of this book hints that not all are going to make it to the end of the series 😢 I NEED to know what happens next and recommend picking up this series if you want some dark romantic tension, a character driven plot, and a fantastical world. __________________ Favourite Quotes:
He was a god walking among the ordinary folk, the boot to the ant, the perfect predator, and everyone else less than prey. It was obvious he was used to letting those surrounding him experience how abundantly inferior they were compared to him.
“You’re everything to me, Nayana Garnet Ortha. The sun and the moon, the earth and the sky, every single star. The aurora in the firmament pales next to you. And in all honesty, I don’t care if I can never call anything else mine as long as you’re with me. I don’t need anyone else but you. Only you. You hold my heart, my existence, my soul until the sands of time stop flowing, and even then, I’d put my own life down for you before I allow you to leave my side. This I swear to you. And you have to know, as much as you are mine, I’m yours as well.”
“Don’t you dare to die, Nayana. I forbid you to. And if you don’t obey me, I’ll find you in Udiona and destroy everything until Noelk has no other choice but to return you to me."
If this were his big villain speech, he’d have to practice the next one better.
“Belittle me as much as you want. Hurt me as well as you can. Threaten me, I don’t give a shit. But never, ever insult Dion again. Or you’ll regret the day you were born. You assume that I’m harmless? Wrong."
“No, listen to me. What you call infatuation…is as if you’d describe the Triad as a deluded, unimportant bunch of mystics. This infatuation is burning brighter than the sun, hotter than the Breocharn, deeper than the depths between the Hungry Giants. What I feel for you is something I’d start wars for, or end worlds. And my feelings are infinite, without a single doubt. Don’t compare me to your fickle backwater boys, even if those are all you’ve encountered during your whole life. My love for you is true and eternal, and I need you to understand that I’d rather fight all the gods and godlings before I’ll ever give up on you. And one sweet day, you’ll finally believe me instead of pushing me away all the fucking time.” __________________ 🌶🌶🌶/5

The story contains spice and shadows. My Thoughts: Our beautiful world is expanded as we head into Galanta. The writing did not disappoint. Nayana grows more in this book, willing to forgive, willing to understand some things, learning what love is. She also made me so mad I was verbally yelling at her. There was some good humor along the way. And Dion. Making mistakes and owning them, doing everything he can to prove himself to Nayana. The scenes between them are raw, gentle, and extremely well written- especially in the context of him giving her space and helping her overcome the trauma from book 1. The twists & turns were windy enough that I didn’t feel put off by the sudden change in direction, they were perfectly placed & enticed me to stay up very late to finish. Thanks Emily Villain for the complimentary copy of "The Chains You Defy" I am leaving my voluntary review in appreciation. #EmilyVillian #TheChainsYouDefy ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
The Chains You Defy by Emily Villin [ARC Review] 4/5 stars Releasing December 13th, 2025
Denial and shadows and fae, oh my!
IF YOU LIKE: • Slow burn romance • Strong characters, in denial • Sentient (adorable) shadow magic • Noble court intrigue • Gods-blessed devotion • Looming apocalyptic catastrophes YOU’LL LOVE THE CHAINS YOU DEFY
》》 Not having meant not losing, and ultimately, not feeling anything equaled not being hurt ever again.
HIGHLIGHTS: • Ivreia, Galanta, and the schism between fae and human • • Complex and well-thought-out worldbuilding make this world feel cohesive and inhabited. It seems like every question you have has an answer waiting in the wings, ready to present itself at the perfect moment. • Dionadair Dorchadas Coroin De’An- • • Too many names aside, Dion is a true force of nature. His lighthearted narration lulls you into a comfortable sense of security, even when he’s making threats; but when the darkness comes out, OH BOY does it COME OUT (Chapter 66: IYKYK) • Dion and Nayana are the true heartbeat • • You cannot think, you cannot breathe, you cannot blink without being reminded of it. Dion is an unstoppable force and Nayana is a not-so-immovable object; stubbornness and devotion are two sides of the same coin here, and the coin is constantly flipping from the strength of their inevitable gravity. • The rot beneath the shining veneer of Alaiann • • Galrach is truly vile, and his villainy gets more and more disturbing as each new layer of awful is revealed. I’m not sure I’ve ever hated a villain more than I hate him.
》》 “Belittle me as much as you want. Hurt me as well as you can. Threaten me, I don’t give a shit. But never, ever insult Dion again. Or you’ll regret the day you were born.”
WISHLIST: • A little more large-scale tension to underline the interpersonal tension • • The underlying mystery goes unmentioned for most of the book. We’re told early on that it’s being looked into, but since neither Dion nor Nayana are involved in the investigation, we as readers have to be content with almost no references to the world-ending threat looming in the not-so-distant future. I would have loved for that mystery to have been layered a bit more into the romantic narrative, to make it feel like the world is still moving forward even while Dion and Nayana are being willful idiots together.
》》 “You thought I was unhinged before? Welcome to your new reality, Nayana. You invited someone like me into your life. Therefore, you only have yourself to blame that I’ll never leave you again.”
The Chains You Defy is everything I want in a sequel, darker, more emotionally charged, and far more dangerous than book one. While many of the core mysteries are finally revealed, the story continues to unravel in ways that only deepen the tension and raise the stakes. The world feels heavier, the choices more costly, and the consequences far more brutal. What stood out most to me was how reflective this installment is. Through the dual POVs of Nayana and Dion, we are given an intimate look at their pasts, their traumas, and the emotional scars they carry. While the book leans heavily into darker themes, these moments of vulnerability allow both characters to begin healing, slowly and imperfectly ,through honesty and shared pain. Nayana’s growth truly shines in this book. As a human navigating the fae court, she is physically weaker, yet her strength lies in her resilience, willpower, and evolving perspective. She remains stubborn, but she becomes more open, willing to listen, to question her beliefs, and to trust. Feeling safe with Dion and his companions allows her softer, lighter side to emerge, making her development feel natural and earned. And then there’s Dion, our morally black, volatile, and unapologetically unhinged. He is the definition of a walking red flag, yet his devotion to Nayana reveals a softer side no one else is allowed to see. When he realizes he’s made a mistake, he owns it immediately and makes it clear where his loyalty and love lie. His protectiveness, intensity, and emotional depth make him utterly magnetic. He is terrifying, tender, and completely unforgettable. Despite the chaos, rage, and violence surrounding them, Nayana and Dion’s relationship grows through trust, banter, and emotional honesty. The slow burn is excruciating in the best way, painfully patient but deeply rewarding. Their connection feels messy, imperfect, and real, and it suits them perfectly. Emily Villin’s writing is multilayered, emotional, and fast-paced, filled with hooks that keep pulling you deeper into the story. I’ve grown incredibly attached to this found family, and the ending makes it painfully clear that not all of them may survive what’s coming next. I need the next book immediately. If you’re looking for a character-driven dark romantic fantasy filled with angst, morally black love, found family, emotional devastation, and a world that feels on the brink of collapse, this series deserves a spot on your TBR.
I knew Emily's storytelling would claim a special place in my heart the moment I started reading The Freedom You Seek, Book 1 of her Requiem for Fading Worlds series. And I knew my world would never be the same the instant Dion, the epitome of a morally black character, stepped into both mine and Naya's world. Well, he did technically enter Naya's world, but I don't care; he's mine.
Emily's series lingers in my heart and soul. A series brimming with life, pain, devotion, and rage. It is so much more than your typical love story. This is a tale about breaking chains, discovering that family is the people we choose, unearthing secrets and embracing hidden truths, and finding the strength to come together when the world is falling apart.
So now imagine my excitement when I was chosen as one of Emily’s beta readers for the sequel, The Chains You Defy. The sheer mix of joy, happiness, and existential dread that was coursing through my veins was almost unbearable. But did I push through? You bet I did. And Emily was right there with me every step of the way, enduring my endless tirade of unhinged theories and thoughts, and being the soft cushion for my heart to land on.
Oh, and my poor heart and soul needed the fluffiest of cushions to soften the blows of everything Emily was throwing my way. The chaos. The pure madness. The utter devastation. But also the devotion so raw it left me breathless. She gave me friendships that healed, love that burned, and Dion. Always Dion. The gift that keeps on giving, the pain and the bliss wrapped together, the sweetest torture and the most brutal punishment.
I thought Book 1 was perfection. Somehow, Book 2 was even more so. It was gut-wrenching, brutal, yet impossibly beautiful. The characters grow, evolve, and bare their souls (Dion most of all). The mysteries deepen, the plot thickens, and the pain… oh, the pain cuts deep. What shattered me most? Naya’s inner battles and Dion’s vulnerability.
And then came the epilogue... Emily asked me if I hated her for it. My answer? Perhaps I did despise her a tiny bit for a fleeting second. No, just kidding, I could never hate Emily. If anything, I embrace the pain and cherish it because this is what I signed up for: to be broken, mended, and broken again in the most exquisite way possible.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ A Dark, Emotional, and Unforgettable Fantasy Romance
The Chains We Defy by Emily Villin is everything I crave in a character-driven dark romantic fantasy. Written in first-person, past tense, with dual POVs, this story pulls you straight into the minds—and hearts—of two deeply compelling characters. It starts small, but the plot escalates beautifully as the series progresses, layering mystery, magic, trauma, found family, and the slowest of slow burns.
This book is perfect for readers who love rich character depth, angst, romantic tension, and a world that feels both doomed and full of hope. And if you’re a fan of morally black, possessive male leads? Dion is the walking red flag of your dreams. His secrets are as dark as the magic he wields, and honestly, watching him try to ☠️ everyone who even breathes wrong in Naya’s direction was one of my favorite parts. Meanwhile, Naya is just trying to keep him in line. Their dynamic is chaotic, adorable, and addictive.
I also loved watching Naya begin to grow more comfortable with herself after everything she’s endured. She’s been through hell—physically, emotionally, metaphorically—and it feels like everyone except the inner circle is out to destroy her. Poor Naya can’t catch a break, but her resilience and vulnerability make her easy to root for.
The writing itself is beautiful and immersive, and the pacing is perfect. Nothing feels rushed.
This series is brimming with life, pain, devotion, magic, rage, and healing. It is so much more than a typical love story—this is a tale about breaking chains, finding your place when the world has betrayed you, unearthing secrets, embracing hidden truths, and discovering that family is ultimately the people we choose.
I tore through this book telling myself “just one more page,” and of course we all know how that goes—sleep be damned, because the story is that immersive.
I highly recommend this to absolutely anyone, but especially fans of dark fantasy romance with emotional depth. Make sure to check the trigger warnings—this book is intense!
Thank you so, so much for allowing me to read the ARC and provide my honest review. I can’t wait to see where the rest of this series goes.

The Freedom You Seek is one of my favourite books. Terroritorial, possessive and arrogant MMC? Yes please! But the Dion in The Chains You Defy broke my heart. Seeing him show vulnerability, share his past, and finally share his thoughts and feelings (well not all of them but we have to start somewhere) made my heart warm. To say this book broke my heart would be an understatement. I found myself crying on multiple occassions.
And Naya... I felt like slapping her in the face more than once. I love a stubborn girl, but I love Dion even more and how could any girl keep herself at arms length from him?! Over the course of the book, watching her strict beliefs slowly crumble as she somewhat accepted or at least entertained her feelings was like a little reward. Seeing Naya transform from her usual stubborn self into someone playful, who felt safe and like she could trust again, was beautiful. Her journey of healing, opening up about her fears, trusting Dion to shoulder and support her trauma, all these things made me feel so proud of the amazing character she was becoming.
I loved them both individually, and I somehow loved them even more when they were together. Their banter and playful flirtation made me giggle with happiness! Their relationship is the definition of a chaotic, imperfect, mess and it suits them so perfectly. I always love the characters that can shine by themselves, and shine even more when paired with a character that challenges them. Emily has written Dion and Naya perfectly, showing how they fit together in just the right ways.
Overall, this is is a story of healing and learning how to trust in a world that's betrayed you more than once. The writing is beautiful, and the progression was perfectly paced. I am so happy the story was long enough to not rush through things and they were given the right amount of attention. Minor characters really shone, and learning more about their histories made me love them way more than I did in the first book. I highly recommend this read to absolutely anyone. Thank you so so much for allowing me to read the ARC and provide my honest review.
The Chains You Defy completely consumed me. As the second book in the series, it continues the story of Dion and Nayana with even higher emotional stakes, deeper character development, and a plot that never lets you breathe.
Dion, a fae High Prince, and Nayana, a human who serves as his amplifier, return to Dion’s homeland where they face the cruelty of his past. The introduction of Dion’s grandfather, the High King, adds a dark and infuriating layer to the story. Dion has endured years of severe punishment at his hands, and returning home proves no different. What made these scenes even harder to read was the constant disrespect shown toward Nayana, simply because she is human.
The emotional tension between Dion and Nayana finally reaches a breaking point as they cross the boundary they had set as “just friends.” Dion openly admits that he wants more and that he has fallen in love with her. Nayana, however, claims she doesn’t believe in love and dismisses his feelings as infatuation, even as she repeatedly realizes that her own emotions run far deeper than she’s willing to admit. This internal conflict made their relationship feel raw, real, and heartbreaking. Dion went through and got the Gods blessing and asked for the rite of Courtship. He is doing everything he can to prove to Nayana that he is worthy of her love.
Just when things seem like they can’t get worse, Nayana is taken instead of being sent to safety. She is captured by those allied with the High King, where the light wielders break the bind between her and Dion. As if that weren’t cruel enough, they infect her with a parasite known to kill fae, one that is slowly draining her life. The story ends with Dion and Nayana traveling in search of a way to remove it, clearly setting the stage for another book.
This novel made me feel everything. I was angry, heartbroken, and fully invested. The writing is so immersive that I truly felt like I was inside the story, watching everything unfold in real time. The Chains You Defy is an emotional, gripping continuation of the series, and I cannot wait to see what comes next.
Review contains spoilers for book one (The Freedom You Seek).
I think this might be the longest book I’ve ever read. That might not be true, but it’s definitely in the top 5. And it was so worth it!!
We wildly have action all the time. Like all the time. Everyone is conspiring against Nayana and Dion, including those that they trust (not the inner gang though, so don’t worry!). There’s schemes coming from all sides, and they range from murder to forcing marriages to grand betrayals.
I think my favorite part was watching Dion get angry and trying to ☠️☠️ everyone while Naya is just desperately trying to keep him in check. He’s constantly trying to annihilate anyone who looks at Naya wrong, insults her, gets too close to her, or just kind of breathes near her.
The grandfather/king suckssssssss. I knew he wasn’t going to be a good person because Dion obviously hates the man, but I didn’t expect him to be such a piece of garbage.
I will say though, this book doesn’t really advance the plot plot of this book. We have romance advancement which I’ll talk about in a minute, but the plot itself doesn’t really go anywhere. In fact, it kind of goes backwards because now we have even more problems than we had before and even less people we can trust.
Now the romance. Dion goes feral for Naya in this book. He basically devises to say screw it and goes all in to his obsession with Naya. Naya doesn’t know what to do with this new Dion, especially because she doesn’t even slightly believe in love. She fights herself so much about Dion simply being her “friend” and not something more.
I did enjoy watching Naya become comfortable with herself and some of the trauma she’s endured. Poor Naya can’t catch a break in terms of her trauma though. Everyone in this book except for the inner circle are actively trying to destroy her physically, emotionally, and metaphorically. Poor Naya.
Thank you very much to Emily Villin for an arc of this book!
"I received an ARC and am voluntarily leaving an honest review.” The Chains You Defy. In this dark and intricately layered second installment of A Requiem for Fading Worlds, Nayana’s circumstances spiral rapidly from dire to devastating. Still grappling with the aftermath of book one, she becomes ensnared in a lethal web of power struggles and long held grudges. Meanwhile, Dion, fractured yet relentless, pushes through every obstacle in his path to protect her. As fae politics tighten with suffocating intensity and a ruthless manipulator pulls strings from the shadows, Nayana and Dion find themselves facing consequences that threaten not only their own lives but the survival of their worlds. What begins as a struggle to endure soon transforms into a confrontation with fate itself. Dion continues to stand out as a morally complex love interest, unquestionably flawed yet impossible not to root for. Nayana’s emotional arc is equally powerful. Her belief that people like her are never granted happy endings is reinforced with heartbreaking inevitability. The emotional impact lands hard, and the continued character development is both nuanced and deeply affecting. The expanding layers of political and magical intrigue feel deliberate, cohesive, and well earned. Despite an expansive cast, each character remains distinct and memorable. Beautifully written by Emily. The stakes rise steadily without sacrificing the intimate relationships that anchor the series. By the time the final pages arrived, I was already dreading the wait for the third book. This is a story that invites engagement, encouraging readers to analyse, speculate, and scrutinise every clue. Dark, sharp, and unflinchingly effective, this series knows exactly how to leave its audience aching for more. I am eagerly awaiting book three and genuinely craving more time with every character in this richly imagined world.💜🖤💜💛
Author: Emily Villin Release: 12.13.25 Series: A Requiem for Fading Worlds, book 2
I don’t really want to write this review because it means I have to admit that book two is finished and I have to wait for book three. I’m just. Not. Ready. To. Leave. Yet.
Book two in Emily’s Requiem series was everything you want out of a sequel and more. The slow burn ignites; a new world opens up; minds and hearts awaken; and trauma is rampant. We begin right where we left off from book one and, if you thought Dion was unhinged in book one, then you’re in for a treat!! His lack of moral compass is fully exposed in these pages and yet… the character growth within him is enormous. I still absolutely adore him (even with his couple of red flags) and when he goes into fussy, mother hen mode, I just loved imagining it and it never failed to make me grin.
In TCYD, we finally get more answers, some of Dion’s history, more of our favorite found family, deeper magic and lore, and so much TENSION. I absolutely love that, through the plot, Em took us different routes than a typical Romantasy would where characters might be in these same situations. It was refreshing and greatly appreciated. She was intentional with hard topics and healing and, yall, the spice… we waited for it and it’s worth every moment of yearning!! I’m sold for this series and these characters 💯 and NEED book three so I can know what’s going to happen!!!!
Tropes you may find in TCYD are forced proximity, protective and bossy shadow daddy MMC, dual POV, one bed, lagoon scene, “eyes on me”, safe word for healing, medium spice, found family, plot twists, touch her and 💀, 🔥 the world for her, court intrigue, fae x humans, and elemental magic.
Emily, thank you for the honor to be an arc reader for you. It was such a joy!!
The Chains You Defy By: Emily Villin A Requiem for Fading Worlds: Book 2
Tropes: ✨Betrayal ✨Found family ✨Possessive and unhinged MMC ✨Morally black MMC ✨Political intrigue ✨Human, fae, and monsters ✨Dark Romantasy ✨Dual POV ✨Trauma and Healing ✨Slow Burn ✨Longing/Yearning
This book immediately follows the events of book one. A Romantasy that gets even darker than book one. If you are a fan of a possessive male that will burn the world down and create rivers of blood for the female he loves then this is for you! The character development is top tier. As deadly as Dion was in book one, this one kicks it up 10 notches. He goes from morally grey to morally black. The characters and their love continue to develop. Nayana has an internal battle waging in her head after the betrayal in book one. Seeing Dion increase show a more vulnerable side of himself had me devouring every word. their relationship gets even more unhinged and chaotic, in the best and most heartbreaking way. The pain and hurt that these characters experience, makes it even sweeter and more gut wrenching when they continue to choose each other as they found family over and over again. The increase in world building and history enhances and expands the universe. With amazing storytelling by Emily Villin I was up until the early hours of the morning to know what happened. Unfortunately I will be not so patiently waiting for book three after the cliffhanger ending.
⚠️Please Check trigger warnings as this is a DARK Romantasy book. It features graphic sex, violence, death, physical and sexual trauma and healing⚠️
“He was a god walking among the ordinary folk, the boot to the ant, the perfect predator and everyone else less than prey. It was obvious he was used to letting those surrounding him experience how abundantly inferior they were compared to him.”
What an amazing sequel! I'm really sad this book is over, and now I have to wait for the next one to arrive.. So, Emily, please keep writing! Book Nº3 can’t come soon enough!🖤 I absolutely loved getting to know more about all the characters, but especially Dion and his dark childhood with his grandfather. Now we know why he is the way he is.. an absolute brute! We also get to know Galanta and the High Fae Court, with all their questionable customs and rites. It was so interesting to read about! The world-building, magic system, and caste society were amazing! I truly enjoyed reading the interactions between Naya and Dion, they are so funny together! The nicknames, the banter, even the possessiveness and jealousy are appealing. Naya is still a little naive, and everyone sees her as this tiny, breakable human, but she's slowly becoming a strong (not independent, because Dion wouldn’t allow it) and capable woman. On the other hand, Dion is.. still Dion, but we love him anyway! And I loved reading from his POV.. his messy head and dark thoughts are always a treat! The secrets, betrayals, plot twists, and the ultimate cliffhanger were incredible. I enjoyed Book Nº1, but this one was even better! And now I’ll have to keep going as if nothing happened How? I absolutely don’t know. Emily, you’ve officially ruined me with this story! Please send help or better yet, send Book Nº3 ASAP! If you haven’t started this series yet, what are you waiting for? It’s pure magic, a 100% morally black Prince Fae and a tiny woman to protect at all costs! And lastly, the most important question of all: What’s with the drapes, Dion??? Here are the Tropes: 📝 Dual POV in First Person 💫 Fae vs Humans 🔥 Slow-Burn Romance ☠️ Morally Black & Possessive MMC 👑 High Fae Court 🥀 Caste & Patriarchal Society ✨ Magical System ❤️🩹 Found Family 📜 End-of-the-world Prophecy
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ I am unwell in the absolute best way. The Chains You Defy grabbed me by the throat (😏) and dragggggged me straight into moral corruption — and I did not fight it. Dion has officially made me morally black, and I have never supported so many dark, violent, unhinged choices in my LIFE. And I’m not sorry! 😂🖤
This sequel is bigger, darker, sharper, and even more emotionally loaded than book one. Emily Villin really said, “Hey! Here’s trauma, a dash of tension, and even a divine being showing up like 'I totally 'ship this,' Enjoy!”
The worldbuilding expands in stunning ways, the reveals are INSANE, and the twists?? Some I kinda saw but others absolutely blindsided me! I sat my Kindle down and just stared at the ceiling like I needed a divine intervention myself.
Nayana and Dion’s dynamic?? Unmatched. Their tension never lets up. The payoff?? WHEW. I was kicking my feet and taking recovery breaths like I was personally involved lmao..
And Dion’s growth?? He went into a whole situation choosing diplomacy instead of violence (which... is huge in itself, IYKYK lol) and I just wanted to hug him! Watching him find an ally outside of his misfit little family was beautiful!
Emily's writing is layered, cinematic, emotional, and addictive. She knows exactly how to hit you where it hurts.. and then somehow make you thank her for it 😅
If you want: ✨ morally gray (well.. morally black 🤭) energy ✨ divine meddling ✨ slow burn ✨ trauma, tenderness, danger, and absolute devotion ✨ flawless pacing & reveals ✨ a dangerous MMC who will literally end bloodlines for her ✨ found-family vibes amid the chaos
READ. THIS. SERIES. I’m obsessed, I’m ruined, and I’m SO ready for Book 3!
Emily took my heart out, then gave me hope and made me happy, then CRUSHED MY HEART. I went through so many emotions in this book, and by the end all I wanted to do was message her that I was going to fight her in a parking lot lol WHO HURT YOU?!
First off, we continue the story with Nayana barely holding on, and your heart breaks with everything she has to endure at the hands of her tormentor. Dion, who also barely survived due to everything that transpired from the ending of the first book. Once Dion is stable, he and the others have to find her and rescue her before it’s too late. Once she’s safe and stable again back in Dion’s arms, you can’t do anything but laugh at their “friendship”. Nayana is so determined that she isn’t in love, even though she is always real cozy with Dion. Him on the other hand, he gave up the thought of friendship a long time ago and is now trying to convince her that she does love him, Dion with his personality of course is possessive, territorial, and will kill anyone and anything that touches her. Along the way, more audacity and more shock happens, but I don’t want to spoil anything.
Both of them had so much character growth just from the first book. Nayana even with everything that happens to her, she tries to be strong and overcomes everything that is thrown at her no matter how many times she almost dies. Dion, everyone said he was just a hot angry ball, and empty of all emotions, and they all came out in full for her. As much as you try to hate him because of how hot tempered he is, you can’t help but love him.
Overall I absolutely loved and devoured this story. I NEED MORE and SOON. I hate that I have to wait to find out what happens, especially that rollercoaster of an ending. Thank you Emily for letting me read this early!
“The Chains You Defy” is the explosive second installment in A Requiem for Fading Worlds, plunging readers deeper into the aftermath of The Freedom You Seek where choices bleed, secrets fester, and survival comes at a devastating cost. At its heart are two souls colliding with fate. Nayana, a seemingly ordinary small-town woman with rebellion burning in her veins, is pulled into a mission far greater and deadlier than she ever imagined. And Dion: a volatile, sharp-edged soldier haunted by his past, ruled by rage, pride, and secrets he refuses to face. Together with his comrades, they are thrust into a journey carved through history, magic, and ruin where someone must rise, even if it costs everything. This is a story of unraveling truths, buried mysteries, and painful self-discovery. Of worlds on the brink of collapse and the cruel irony that saving them may be easier than surviving love. Perfect for readers who crave character-driven dark romantic fantasy, this series begins in the shadows and escalates into something vast and unforgiving. Expect slow-burn tension, aching angst, mutual pining, found family, dangerous magic, trauma, and the relentless search for belonging in a world already falling apart. This one is for lovers of a walking red flag: a morally black, possessive MMC whose darkness is as lethal as the magic he commands.
⚠️ Reader Advisory This novel is 18+ and explores difficult, potentially triggering themes. It is written in first-person past tense with dual POVs and contains spice, shadows, and emotional intensity. Your mental health matters. Please read and heed the trigger warnings at the beginning of the book. Some content may not be suitable for all readers. Always put yourself first. Reader discretion is strongly advised.
OMG! It didn't think it was possible, but this book is even better than the first one and that one was already sooooo good! The writing in this one reads so smoothly, the words chosen are so beautiful and descriptive and it just feels like the perfectly matured version of the first book. And that is only the writing. The intensity of the story itself increases x100! The new places and people we are introduced to, getting more and more backstories which are slowly bringing together the big picture and then - the character development. WHAT?!?!? Dion is literally the epitome of "I will burn the world down for you". OMG, I fell so hard for this guy. He is my favorite obsessive, possessive, unhinged MMC so far. While the first book was practically zero spice, that changes a lot in this book - and the spice is good 🥵🔥 And Nayana? Go girl! I love how tough she is, how clever at navigating unknown waters and depths, all the while following her inner compass - even if it skews occasionally 😉 And this book is so full of plot twists that NOBODY saw coming that I gave up trying to predict what was going to happen next. But I can say that one such one absolutely devastated me, but I refuse to give up hope! This book ends on an even bigger cliff hanger than the first book and since the third book is not yet published, now I really don't know what I am going to do with myself as I sit on pins and needles waiting to find out what happens with our merry band of characters, who have all grown on me.
Definitely recommend this one and again, be prepared, because it is not a quick little read 😉
Emily Villin absolutely smashes it again with this monumental saga!! I cannot tell you how much I enjoyed this book and need the third one immediately. I really love the characters in this series, each one is complex and it’s very clear that they have been thought about in detail as it absolutely reflects in the lore and development. The pacing of this book is on point with the detailed world building and I felt like it made good progression with each chapter.
Can we just talk about the cave scene for a second?! Written to perfection, Dion is the consent king and we love to see it👏👏👏 I love that Dion’s first thought is Naya’s feelings and how her past trauma may be impacting her, so he always makes sure he does everything he can to make her comfortable first and foremost.
Dion has a massive amount of growth in this book, it’s brilliant to have insight into his thoughts and feelings as they shifted along with his priorities. I can’t help but love how much of a walking red flag he is🤣
Naya has a considerable amount of growth in this book too, however we know she is very much in denial with regards to her feelings for Dion, and how important of a role she plays in his life. She’s had to overcome massive trauma and still has the spirit to joke about it and explore new things around her - what a woman!
The number of things revealed in the last 10% of the story had me gagged, and it made the cliff hanger feel like a full-on crescendo.
Overall, I wish I could rate this more than 5 stars as it’s easily one of my favourite reads of 2025. Cannot wait to see what comes next! Thanks Emily Villin for the ARC. I have read this book voluntarily and this is my honest review.
Nayana, our stubborn, small-town heroine with a fierce desire for freedom, finds herself drawn deeper into a mission far larger than she ever imagined. Her humanity, her fear, and her fire make her impossible not to root for. But it’s Dion who truly steals the spotlight…a temperamental, ego-ridden, morally black soldier whose narration practically vibrates with rage, desperation, and reluctant vulnerability. He is the definition of a walking red flag, and yet the kind you can’t help but want!
The duality between them? Electric. Painful. Delicious.
Slow burn, mutual pining, sharp edges softened only by longing. This book thrives on emotional tension. And the found family dynamic adds richness, humor, and surprising tenderness among all the blood, magic, and broken promises. The plot expands beautifully from book one, with more mysteries unraveled, more history unearthed, and a growing sense that the fate of entire worlds is tightening around these characters. Even when the mission becomes clearer, the dangers escalate, and every wrong move feels catastrophic.
Emily Villin balances intimate character work with an increasingly epic scope, creating a dark fantasy that is as emotional as it is high-stakes.
Spice: 🌶️🌶️🌶️
If you love: ✨ Morally black, possessive MMCs ✨ Raw emotional tension and slow-burn longing ✨ Found family chaos and loyalty ✨ Magic, mystery, trauma, and truth ✨ A plot that grows darker and more expansive with every page
…then this series should already be on your radar.
I’m obsessed, I’m ruined, and I need the next book immediately.
**⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 5/5 — Dark, Addictive, and Emotionally Unforgiving**
*The Chains You Defy* by Emily Villin is the kind of dark romance that sinks its hooks into you and refuses to let go. It’s raw, twisted, and breathtakingly emotional — the perfect storm of obsession, pain, and redemption that Villin always delivers so flawlessly.
From the very first page, you’re pulled into a world where love is both a weapon and a lifeline. The chemistry between the main characters is explosive — equal parts dangerous and magnetic — the kind that leaves you questioning your morals while rooting for them anyway. Every interaction simmers with tension, every line of dialogue feels deliberate, and every moment of vulnerability hits like a punch to the gut.
Villin’s writing is dark poetry — sharp, evocative, and full of emotion. She doesn’t shy away from the messy parts of love or the brutality of survival. Instead, she leans into it, crafting a story that’s not only about defiance but about reclaiming power in the face of control and fear.
If you crave morally gray characters, emotional torment, and a romance that’s anything but soft — *The Chains You Defy* will wreck you in the best possible way. It’s haunting, beautiful, and completely unforgettable.
💔 **Triggers:** This one dives deep into dark themes — definitely check content warnings first. 🔥 **Spice:** Off the charts — intense, emotional, and perfectly tied to the story’s darkness.
Did I inhale this book over the course of two days just like I did with the first one? You bet I did! So sit back down with a snack, get cozy and let me remind you why you need to read a new series to add to your favorites. We get more Dion and Thain
Dion, aka Mr. Growling, grumpy pants, shadow daddy extraordinaire, quickly became a favorite of mine in book 1. We got to see so much more of what he has endured since being a child and how that has shaped him into who he is now. We also have exceptional character growth with him. This man is down bad for his girl, Naya, and he’s making sure to use every moment he has to prove to her he’s right for her. Only him. He still promises and delivers death to anyone who causes her harm. He’s also making it public that there will be no other male. While doing everything he can to grow and be himself outside of the death that his king has made him, he is also discovering new abilities with his powers. Will he control them, or will they control him? I can’t wait to find out Naya continues to be the fierce woman she is and continues to tell Dion that she is no one’s to claim, but she also loves it and definitely isn’t a fan of any other female who may try and win Dion's attention. She's still not a believer in love, but I think a certain shadow daddy is changing that with each moment. I'm excited for these two and what’s to come.
One of my favorite parts about book two is actually Thain and all we uncover about him. He’s still a flirt, but there’s also so much more to him. I’m really rooting for an enemies to bromance for him and Dion. I can feel it.
i loved this one so much and Emily continues to keep me fully immersed in the world she’s creating! I cannot wait for book 3!
Thank you for letting me have to chance to read early
So this is book two, and honestly? It did not play around.
I thought I knew what I was getting into because I read book one. Yeah, no. This one hits harder, messier, and way more personal.
Nayana grew so much in this book, and not in a “suddenly perfect warrior queen” way. She’s still traumatized, pissed off, stubborn, tired, and fighting through it anyway. I really liked that she wasn’t magically healed or fearless — she’s learning, she’s struggling, she’s choosing herself in real-time. Her growth felt earned.
Dion… he is absolutely unhinged and I mean that as a compliment. The man is devoted in a way that is both terrifying and addictive. He’s darker here, more emotional, more desperate, and honestly? It works. He’s not doing the tame morally-gray act — he’s just morally black and fully committed. Love it.
Their relationship has tension — not the cute cheesy kind. The “we have trauma and trust issues and feelings we don’t know how to handle but we’re still here” kind. It’s messy, intense, and way more honest than most fantasy romances.
The pacing worked, the emotional moments hit, and the world gets darker without feeling confusing. It felt like a real continuation instead of a repeat.
If you liked book one, this one goes deeper. More character work, more pain, more “are we doing this or not” energy. I finished this feeling wrung out in a good way.
No spoilers, but yeah… I need book three. Immediately.
