Join the kaiju king Matt Frank ( Rulers of Earth) and all-star writer Sophie Campbell (Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles) on the adventure of a lifetime!
One of the most exciting and talented creators working in comics today, Sophie Campbell has made her mark on IDW books such as Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and Jem and the Holograms.
A graduate of the Savannah College of Art & Design, Campbell began her career writing and drawing independent comics primarily focused on the lives of young women from all walks of life, including Wet Moon, Shadoweyes, and the Abandoned. She further proved her versatility as an artist when she began drawing the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles for IDW, where her kinetic action sequences and distinctive character art were a hit with fans and critics alike.
Campbell was brought on as the first artist on the IDW continuing series Jem and the Holograms, where she was responsible for the modern redesign of the characters and establishing the unique look of the comic. Her work on Jem with writer Kelly Thompson was so well received that the two were profiled by the New Yorker in 2015.
Campbell continues to work on several projects for IDW, as well as her own creator-owned independent comics.
I want to preface this reviewby saying that I got to meet Matt Frank at G-Fest this year and talk to him about this book He is such an incredibly nice and down to Earth guy.. I even bought some of the original prints from it. The art is phenomenal and every page is just a treat to behold. Even with my personal connection to this book, the story has some issues. It feels like everything is happening out of convenience. That doesn't mean that the story could not get to a point where it really clicks but this first issue felt rushed. Mothra has always been my favorite Kaiju so I am excited to see her in action in the upcoming issues.
Aw yeah! Mothra has always been my favorite Kaiju, so I had to get this one! Only to find out Mothra isn't the main character! But that's okay because our two main characters are awesome! Two twins that have to go back in time to save the world?? You know that's gonna be fun! And the little cliffhanger has me wondering about everything now. This is gonna be a great series. Can't wait for the next one!
Mothra: Queen of the Monsters #1 by Sophie Campbell is a relatively short comic, with a cover and illustrations that truly do justice to Mothra, who, along with Godzilla, is my favorite kaiju.
Although the story is well-told, I think it would be strengthened if it explained a bit more deeply the fifteen-year gap in which the twins were separated and how they were reunited. Aside from that detail and the fact that the text is sometimes a little difficult to read, the book is very well-designed and has a suitable ending that leaves room for more stories.
Multiple time travels, battles between a young Mothra and other kaiju, an unexpected alliance, and an epic final battle... what more could you ask for?
I thank the author and NetGalley for the opportunity to read this book.
The opinion I have expressed above is based solely on what I think and feel about this book.
Maybe a three and a half. I kind of hover back and forth on the score. The art is gorgeous. Mothra deserves more comic love. It has a new monster. There is a great shout-out to the original version of Titanosaurus (that is to say, there are two of them here). But the story feels... a little... not quite there. The new monster is basically Battra, except an ant. Time travel again. Yes, and it's back to dinosaur times. Feels a bit like a reheated meal.
Thank you IDW Publishing and NetGalley for the ARC!
I'm making an effort to read more comics and graphic novels, and when I saw Mothra's story available to request I couldn't resist. I'm such a big fan of Godzilla and Mothra through film and I was really excited for this comic.
I really loved this story and enjoyed seeing Mothra in action. The art is absolutely incredible and together they deliver something truly special. I'm very excited to continue the series.
A stylish and respectful tribute to kaiju royalty. The story leans more on setup than payoff, but the art is a clear highlight—especially the stunning cover, which perfectly captures Mothra’s majesty. Campbell gives her the grandeur she deserves, even if the narrative doesn’t quite reach the same heights. A visual treat for fans of the genre.
Been enjoying the hell out of Campbell's Supergirl run, so when I heard she wrote a Mothra comic I had to check it out! Great premise and an interesting little hook on the last page. Excited to keep going!
This story has a lot of potential. The art is chef's kiss. I'm looking forward to where the comic goes. A new design for our precious queen was much overdue.
