“One thing I learnt early…don’t meddle with anything that isn’t human…that’s never been human…trust me on that.”
The walls between Charlie White’s real life and purgatory are thinning. The realm beyond is increasingly affecting not only her, but her closest companions. The danger deepens the more her two worlds collide.
Charlie has been warned there is more to the Dream than she can comprehend in this life. She knew she was not alone in limbo, but she never dared to seek out the others. One of them, though, is about to find her. Dragging her further into the world beyond.
As she fights not just for her life, but for the lives of her friends, Charlie is forced to question her deepest fears and desires. How long can she hold onto those she loves? What does it mean to be betrayed? And when does justice become malevolence?
Thank you so much to the author for an advanced copy of this novel in exchange for an honest review.
The Light is the fourth book in The Corner of Her Eye series. I think this was my favorite of the series so far! It was extremely emotional and heartfelt, even more so than the previous installments. The history is once again well-researched and the inclusion of Australian history is absolutely fascinating. I also really appreciated how well the author kind of flashed back to the previous novels, and tied everything together in such a beautiful way. I was in actual tears by the end of this one.
I've fallen in love with all of these characters (Charlie, Tess, Trent, Maryanne) over the course of these four books, while learning some Australian history and learning about all of the horrors people can experience in a lifetime. I can't wait to see what's in store for everyone in the next book.
JJ Carpenter’s The Light proves yet again that her storytelling only gets better with each book. This latest entry in The Corner of Her Eye series is a masterful blend of suspense and heart wrenching emotion, filled with unexpected twists that keep you eagerly turning each page.
Carpenter’s descriptive language allows you to be fully immersed in the story environment and with characters who feel real and are so relatable—people who linger in your mind long after the final page. In this book, their emotional journeys are especially poignant, making it a tear-jerker, but with expectant hope for Book 5. As their stories unfold, you can’t help but feel invested in their growth and struggles.
If you’ve been following the series, The Corner of Her Eye then Book 4: The Light is a must-read. And if you’re new to Carpenter’s work, then do yourself a favour and dive in—you’re in for a wonderful reading experience.
Book four is beautifully written and will have you reaching for the tissues.
We once again meet Charlie, Tess, Brett and Trent this time visiting Newcastle, NSW. JJ once again transports you to another place, this time you can taste the salt spray on your lips and see Nobby’s Lighthouse sitting proudly on the headland. In this book we encounter a green spirit and JJ emotionally destroyed me once again. It was impossible to put down and I read it over two days!
The death hit me so hard, it was truly like losing a friend. JJ has brought these characters to life that makes them feel like people we love. I felt I needed to go away and grieve. What made the story so personal was JJ drawing on the loss of some of her friends over recent times. These characters will continue to live on in our hearts and minds.
Please have mercy on us JJ for the next one!
Thank you to the amazing author for an advanced copy to read.

"One thing I learnt early…don’t meddle with anything that isn’t human…that’s never been human…trust me on that." The Light is about Charlie who is a keeper and her journey continues on in this read. She ends up traveling to Newcastle where she visits Nobbys Island and the lighthouse. Of course, Charlie ends up encountering spirits there, but this time the spirits are different colors. She must figure out why they are there and how to help them move on. This was a page turner from beginning to end and all of the characters are amazing. The author did a great job writing this book and I love the history in the book. Overall, I loved this book a lot and would recommend to any reader. Make sure to check out this series as well. Thank you to the author for this ARC read in exchange of my honest review of The Light: The Corner of Her Eye.
This is the fourth book in the series and I think it’s my favourite so far! I’m so invested in all the characters - Charlie, Tess, Trent and Maryanne. The story is set in and around Newcastle, NSW, Australia, and the descriptions are so vivid - and so accurate (from someone who visited only a few months ago) - that you feel like you’re there. The author weaves the fascinating local history of the region into a creepy, heartbreaking, supernatural tale which keeps you engaged from start to finish. Word of warning though, this story very much builds on the characters, the events and the spirituality of the previous books, so make sure you’ve read them first. And do go and read them then come back to this one because you won’t regret it.
Although this one started a little bit slower than books 1-3, once I got right into it, id say probably from chapter 4 onwards it def got better. I must say its got to be one of the more emotional books out of the series so far, and I have to admit I couldn't stop crying in a few scenes.
Being so invested in the characters - Charlie, Trent, Brent, Tess, and even Maryanne, its almost sad to say goodbye knowing that book 5 will be the final time we ever read about these guys again.
The journey so far has been so good, so emotional, so fulfilling, and its been a while since a series has captivated me as much as this one has.
JJ is an incredible writer, and she definitely knows her Australian history, and I highly recommend reading this series to anyone that loves history
The history in this series is my absolute favorite. Before starting these, I didn’t realize historical horror was really a thing but now I’m obsessed with it.
There were so many jaw dropping moments in this installment. Every book introduces us to a new character or two but these were my favorite. Carpenter writes these characters so beautifully that I ugly cried while reading this one. So be prepared. Jumping back into the next story with this lot is like meeting up with old friends.
Personally, this book was my favorite in the series, so far. Anything involving the ocean and especially a light house? Sign me up!
In this fourth installment of ‘The Corner of Her Eye’, you’ll reflect on the beginning of our journey in ‘The Keeper’ and realise how Carpenter dangled a carrot in front of our faces and led us down this path that goes deeper and darker.
Individually, this novel has a slower pace compared to the others but has the biggest emotional impact. As a reader we can sense that we are being set up for something and this pacing builds the tension and anticipation.
Carpenter has created many beautiful and memorable moments, leaving us satisifed but still desperate for more.
I never cry in books. But this one got me. Marvellously written and so authentic in its representation of loss. Alongside the loveable characters, tantalising mystery, enlightening history, poetic imagery and spine tingling spooky bits you’ve come to expect from JJ Carpenters spectacular writing. Best of all, some exciting reveals to whet your appetite for what’s to come in the series. There’s so much more I want to say, but I don’t want to give anything away. Suffice to say; it’s a must read.
