This book was a trip as the tropes/themes list is going to reflect. I was along for the ride and sometimes questioning whether I should continue it, because it was all over the place, but then the H would say something extra sweet and I’d stick around. I felt as conflicted about my enjoyment of the book as the h did about how quickly the H decided she was his lol. It’s definitely OTT and entertaining, might be a little too much for some readers.
Written in first person, dual POV. No ow/om drama. Both are experienced, but the H had experience with good sex and the h did not. She’d never orgasmed with a partner and didn’t really explore her own body either. There are some vague references to H having skills that he clearly gained with others, but nothing specific about past hookups and no ow are on page. He wouldn’t have noticed them anyway.
Some tropes/themes (brace yourself):
☆ Former mafia princess in hiding x Hockey goalie
☆ Reverse age gap
☆ Black cat x golden retriever
☆ Down bad MMC with “That one’s going to be my wife” at first sight energy
☆ She wants it just be sex
☆ MMC is pushy in his pursuit of a relationship
☆ FMC does not trust easily, but kinda lets him in quickly, then also holds back
☆ He has a magic dick (and tongue)
☆ It’s also enormous (the dick, not the tongue)
☆ Sexy times where someone could notice (no one sees anything)
☆ Breeding kink (he thinks she’s going to be his wife from go)
☆ FMC has a sad backstory and fear of her family
☆ MMC likes it when she yells at him
☆ Large and nosy cast of side characters
☆ Eventually a cute animal sidekick
☆ Mostly a sports romance but the mafia part does come out too
☆ A couple of viral moments
Goose/Sasha (H) cuts Gemma (h) in line at the DMV and when she goes off on him, he falls in love. He’s been the only single guy in his friend group for a while and he wanted to be in love and maybe make some babies sooner rather than later. He gets walloped by his instant attraction/feelings for Gemma and pushes hard in his pursuit of something with her. She’s having none of it to start and is genuinely scared that he’s a crazy stalker at first. Not helped by the fact that her family’s literally the mafia and she’s had a crap hand in life to that point.
Their romance is an odd mix of adorably sweet and bulldozery male undermining her agency while trying to build her up. I know, it doesn’t quite sound like it fits and that’s because Goose loves taking care of Gemma and would do literally anything to make her happy, but he also has to force his way into said relationship with her. That’s even true with the steamy times because she’s never liked sex and he’s all “I’m going to change your mind”, then does, but she was iffy on her boundaries and what she was saying/feeling. All the mixed signals. I think the author was trying for a prickly h with a soft underbelly who needed to learn that she could be vulnerable. However, Gemma’s all that some of the time and other times just comes across as kind of confused with a hot/cold personality. The breeding kink was another specific piece of the bulldozering. He’d be fine knocking her up right away, but it’s clear she wouldn’t want that and they ride a fine line that I didn’t love.
Goose is all the golden retriever energy so he’s pretty consistent. Same with the bulldozer aspect of his character, he’s fun and adorable, but he’ll also push and push. He’s so hyper focused on his girl and Gemma does not know what to do with him in some moments. Other times she knows just fine what to do with him and usually that involves doing something with what he’s rocking below the belt. There is a part of the book where she embraces the sexual side of what’s happening and decides they’re just sexing it up, nothing else. Goose never wavers in what he wants, but he does use sex a lot more than I liked to try and get Gemma to see that they were a couple. There’s one scene where he’s trying to emphasize trust between them and I understood what I was reading but not why that was the choice. Then he’d go and do something that was purely lovely boyfriend material though, with no sex or other agenda.
Ultimately, they’re a cute couple together and they do make each other happy, even if it takes a lot for Gemma to admit that. The hockey elements were incorporated in a great way and his teammates with their significant others were a fun bunch (that were way too involved in each other’s lives though). The mafia elements were another aspect that confused me. For one, Gemma hated her upbringing but did think/talk about how her brother and cousins were different. Yet, she was also quick to still lump them in with mafia guys as a whole and seemed to actually hurt her brother’s feelings. It didn’t make sense? The mafia storyline also comes in later and I didn’t get that either or why things played out the way they did. A scare late in the book was pretty heavy. It all leads them to a HEA with a jump ahead not too far into the future with them married and adoring each other. So ultimately a satisfying romance that careened a bit from Point A to Point B.
