A Journey of Quiet Power and Bold Possibilities

This isn’t just a fantasy novella, it’s a slow-burn initiation into a grander, more emotionally intelligent epic.
E.R. Zaugg crafts a world that hums with magic, but never forgets that the real force lies within the hearts of its characters. Rosalie’s story is not one of instant triumphs or flashy powers, but a deeply personal awakening set against the backdrop of destiny and quiet sacrifice.

Rather than rushing into conflict, Zaugg allows the narrative to breathe - layering relationships, internal doubts, and the subtle tension of a life about to change. The Weavers, while mysterious and powerful, feel like more than plot devices they represent the weight of history, purpose, and consequences.

This novella isn’t about shocking twists or world-ending stakes (yet); it’s about the promise of greatness and the ache of leaving childhood behind. Readers who appreciate introspective fantasy where the magic is as much metaphor as it is spectacle will find themselves lingering on every page.

This is the fantasy that has everything and most of all - a good helping of believability.
It has love, heartbreak, and friendship, but also magic, and an honest to goodness storyline that keeps you turning the page.
The Weavers are the magicians/witches if you will of the tale and when Rosalie Sharone one of the most powerful Weavers of her time finds an abandoned baby who will grow to be the most powerful Weaver of all time we have the start of a journey that is unmissable.
The big question is will Jonnas seek his own destiny or will he follow his heart.
The book is filled with ancient and modern dialects like my own homeland Cymraeg from Wales.

Book Review: Innatraea Novella One: Small Footsteps

By E.R. Zaugg

In a genre saturated with familiar tropes, E.R. Zaugg's "Small Footsteps" emerges as a fresh take on fantasy storytelling. This 175-page novella serves as the opening chapter of the Innatraea series, introducing readers to a world where magic and destiny intertwine in unexpected ways.

The story centers on Rosalie Sharone, who ranks among the most powerful magic wielders ever born. Orphaned as an infant, Rosalie's journey is both deeply personal and epic in scope. The novel opens with a compelling quote that sets its tone: "Every legend begins with the small footsteps of ordinary Innatraeans."

Zaugg's world-building shines in its treatment of magic, particularly through the concept of "Weavers" – powerful individuals who seem to attract both opportunity and danger. The author has crafted a unique fantasy realm that serves as more than just a backdrop; it's a living, breathing entity that shapes the characters' experiences.

The narrative is decidedly character-driven, focusing on the emotional and personal growth of its protagonists. Early reader reviews praise the story's immersive quality and rich magical elements.

Strengths:

Strong female protagonists who drive the narrative
Rich, well-developed magic system
Immersive world-building
Emotional depth in character relationships

Areas for Consideration:

Some narrative threads remain intentionally unresolved, setting up future installments.

The novella forms part of a larger series that focuses on strong women characters throughout history, making it particularly relevant for readers seeking fantasy that breaks from traditional gender roles. At just under 200 pages, it's a relatively quick read, but one that leaves a lasting impression.

Available in multiple formats including ebook, paperback, hardcover, and audiobook (narrated by Claire Glover), "Small Footsteps" represents an promising start to what appears to be an ambitious fantasy series. While it may not satisfy readers looking for a completely self-contained story, it successfully lays the groundwork for a larger narrative while delivering its own emotional payoff.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars

Perfect for fans of character-driven fantasy who appreciate detailed world-building and don't mind a slower-paced, more contemplative approach to storytelling. The book's focus on themes of destiny, personal growth, and the power of ordinary individuals to affect extraordinary change will resonate with readers who enjoy both young adult and adult fantasy fiction.

Innatraea Novella One: Small Footsteps really hit the sweet spot for me—classic fantasy vibes with a fresh, character-driven story. Rosalie Sharone is one of those protagonists you can’t help but root for: powerful, brave, and facing a whole lot of emotional and magical challenges as she steps into her destiny. I loved the world of Innatraea and how the magic system unfolded naturally without info-dumping. It reminded me why I love coming-of-age fantasy tales, especially when the stakes are this high. I genuinely didn’t want to put it down and now I’m counting the days until book two.

Ummm HELLO?? This book just cast a spell on me and I’m not even mad about it. 🧙‍♀️💥 Rosalie is the definition of badass—she’s got magic pulsing through her veins, a kingdom hanging in the balance, and the kind of destiny that makes you go “OMG WHAT HAPPENS NEXT?!” I laughed, I gasped, I may have yelled at a few characters (sorry not sorry). If you’re into fierce heroines, ancient orders, and high-stakes magical drama, then honey, this is your next obsession. ✨📚🔥
