Elaine and Iona have graduated from the School of Sorcery and Spellcraft, and are out to try and find her old immortal mentor, Night. Travel isn't easy. Different cultures have different ideas of travelers. Plagues and Pekari stalk the Eventide Eclipse. And Night had never been the easiest to find, even when they knew where he was.
If he's even still alive.
23,456 years is a long time, even for an Immortal as focused on surviving as Night is.
Their travels take them to Exterreri, where the ruling vampires have clouded the skies, blotting out the sun to protect against their greatest weakness.
Elaine and Iona will have to search for Night, Under the Ashen Skies.
I couldn't stop binge reading the series after I started it
The story flow was fantastic. The dialogue was perfect and amazing. The whole idea of the system both exactly quantifies the power and ability of the characters, while simultaneously presenting an air of mystery.
The moment one of the characters facial expressions was described as looking like they had consumed a box of surprise lemons.. I fell in love with the narration and the disposition of the main character. Modern ethics and ideologies surrounding all things medical, and other such themes, and applying it to this fantasy world has been all of the mango flavored icing I could have asked for. So many obvious real world on the job career insights are riddled through the book, applied directly to a fantastically build fantasy world, and will leave any hungry book Wyrm desiring more.
If you read this, you will laugh, you will cry, and you will end up on the edge of your seat. And most assuredly you won't be disappointed.
This one is okay, I guess. Really, not a whole lot happens. The relationship has become annoying, in a "new romance PDA all the time" kind of way, but, worse than that, it has been coopted as a plot laziness device where Iona just acts as a "fixer" whenever it's needed. Overall I felt like it was a lot of words to mostly just reset the plot to what we had before the time-jump. There are some hints that some novel plot lines might be coming soon, so I'll check the next one out, but I'm not excited about it.
I started reading this series 2 weeks ago, having been burnt out from isekai litrpg's despite my love of them. I decided to give it a try when I noticed that Elaine was a healer, since my fave class is healers/support. Became obsessed with it. And when Iona got introduced I became more obsessed. Getting to see Elaine return to her roots was great. Only bad part of the book is that it is currently the last book in the series. Can't wait to read more
Elaine and Iona make it to Sanguino and settle in for the long haul in the volume of Beneath the Dragoneye Moons.
Spoilers below!
After leaving the school, our heroines head for Sanguino. They stop at a plague town, and Elaine solves the problem in one day (with help from her Phoenix), however she gets a firsthand look at how folks feel about high level healers when they try to kill her the next morning, not caring at all about the bystanders they slaughter to get to her.
E&I get out of there and continue their journey. They meet a ranger team concerned about the large flying armored wyvern and have a chat. They do NOT try to detain Elaine, instead they fly to the capital ahead to spread the word.
Amber shows back up and takes a couple immortality gems to sell. Elaine gets captured by Sentinel Arachne who is Night's wife! Elaine gets reinstated as War Sentinel Dawn and starts work on her house. Night plays a joke on her by giving her 6 years of backpay in coins (as she was accustomed to), which is a mountain of iron...
Elaine classes up again to better support her role as Loremaster.
Final interlude shows Amber selling things and some otherworldly artifact. Sigrun (head of Valkyries) is in the Han empire helping locals stand up to raiders during the civil war. Artemis and Julius get Elaine's letter and set off for Sanguino. The guy who (briefly) killed Auri at the plague town is meeting with someone named Antonius who may know something about a Phoenix...

Elaine and Iona have graduated. Now they travel to Exterreri in Elaine's search for Night, her mentor of old and potential survivor from ancient Remus. And with this volume we return back to the older volumes of this series, a slice-of-life travel journal and settling back into a life as a protector of civilization. It is a style of story telling I like, even if none of the minor arcs and events in this volume were of particular interest either in regards to world building or character development (for the most part). The return home felt a tad too optimistic/grandiose for my taste, but we might get to see more conflicts or at least friction. Exterreri is not Romus and Night and Elaine are not the same people anymore. Still, it was an entertaining read and likely a setup for a bigger story although which of the potential titbits at the end will come into play is up for grabs.
I really hate it when a Kindle Unlimited series is suddenly buy to read. This one came with an especially nasty, tricksy twist. Clicked on the read now icon. Got to reading and suddenly got a buy book to finish reading. Just a sample. Would have been done with the series right then but this is the volume that has the long awaited reunion between Dawn & Knight. So I paid for the book. And now I am officially done. Not only with the series. Done with the author. Your book, you get6 to market it any way you want. And I get to redo my ratings and leave a warning review at Book #1.
Well - I'm sorry. I know the book only dropped today, but I couldn't put it down! I'm super happy with the characters, how they developed, how they're still true to themselves and their core values, even as they change, even if making an almost fatally stupid choice, damn it Elaine! No spoilers but obscenely satisfying on all expected accounts. And while there is clearly more to the story it also doesn't feel like we left on a cliff either, which I love!
I didn’t like the school arcs as much, so I’m glad she’s back on the road and in a more dangerous setting. I wish for more brutal antagonists, demon lords or devil cults, and evil gods who are set out to kill everyone. I would also prefer Elaine’s heal oath would be dropped so she could freely kill anyone who stood in her way. Iona is a bit too nice for my taste and I miss the more ruthless Artemis. Still, it’s a great read.
Honestly, if you’ve enjoyed the previous nine books, you should definitely enjoy this one. We get some new great classes, some progress on a future, home, and some great battles. I will have to say the only part of the story that really isn’t a strong point is the romance, I can’t tell you why, it’s just not a strong point. Personal opinion, I suppose. Yet nonetheless, a good read overall.
This book was exactly what I was looking forward to for the last 2 or 3 books. Elaine finally travels to the vampire nation. Exciting stuff happens, but the author doesn't add a bunch of unreasonable drama to try and up the stakes or create the perfect climax at the 80% mark in the book. Anyways, I'm happy and looking forward to the next book in the series.
Having read all the books multiple times I feel very comfortable advocating for this series. The main character somehow remains believable and grounded despite experiencing what can only be called 'EPIC' events.
A truly great series that only continues to get better. I highly recommend it.
I love Elaine and Iona. Their bonds are precious children, and adventures seem fulfilling. They're carving out a home and their place in the world. Arachne is funny and very devious. The relationship makes absolute sense, and it's heartwarming to see that pair. I am extremely curious where the story will go next.
This book was much better than the last and things are beginning to get more organized. Nice to see some familiar faces in this one as well as some interesting twists. Definitely looking forward to the next installment and this one was a fine addition.
Under Ashen Skies is the tenth book in the series, and it doesn't disappoint. I don't know where the series is going, but I'm sure it will be interesting and fun to read no matter where it goes. Really enjoyed the scene when the main character asked for her 23,000+ years of backpay. Absolutely classic.
Having read all of these amazing stories and knowing that there is only one story left to read this knowledge brings me deep sorrow. 😵😥❗. I hope that selkie myth has planned to continue this amazing series having created a new character named Nina❗ I've been greatly entertained with with series from the very start😍😝😜😘👌👍💖💖💖💖💖🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥💭💭💭💭💭❗
Back to the fun again, but with surprisingly few stakes. There were a few fights but everything felt safe in this tenth installment. It was lovely seeing the leveling and new powers evolving. It was also great to see some old friends get together again. I just enjoyed spending time in the story again even if not much happened.
Yes, the story progresses. Yes, there are some interesting parts. But the vast majority of this book is just dry and stale. There is no conflict. No great cause. No antagonist. This is a book without a bad guy. And thats boring. I can only read about Ionas grin so many times. Ugh
The writing and editing is top notch. The story is paced well and has several fun and engaging characters. I don't like the same sex relationship and the gender transition surgery without parental knowledge was extremely off-putting. Other than those two complaints I really am enjoying the story.
One of my all-time favourite series that I've been following on patreon since I originally caught up. If you are looking at reviews for book 10, you are probably already a fan, but this one continues to deliver and sets the stage for Elaine's future adventures.
Great world. Nights such a cool character. 20 000 years of guarding humanity is about as bad ass as it gets. I dunno about Elaine and iona relationship. They don’t seem like they would be a couple to me but otherwise loved the book
What's not to love! Selkie does it again with another amazing installment to a tililitaing series! Tha action! The romance! Elaine finding her mentor and Iona becoming a mentor! I can't wait for the next book!!!!
My dislike, like every volume is that it wasn't longer. 5 stars everytime, I'm always checking every month to see if another installment drops or not. One of my favourite series and always worth buying. Thank you for your hard work.
This story of a Earth gal being reborn on a planet with magical systems was a very interesting entertaining read that I really enjoyed. I guess there is more to come still.
Amazing series great twist can’t wait to see what’s in the sequels. Apparently the review I left is way too short so it won’t let me submit it so I have to add more and more words until it gets to where I can submit.
YAY! Finally Elaine has found her mentor and her friend from her past, Night. This made me so happy to read. I just wish there was more than this one exciting moment. Meeting new characters was fun, but I wasn't totally wowed by it all.
I really don't know why I like this series so much ----the narrator drove me CRAZY the first time through and I complained a lot to my partner, but it's a fun romp and the characters are fun and the world building is good and nothing truly awful happens so, yeah
The main character, being as stupid as she was in this book, was a stretch. Everything worked out perfectly for her. It could have gone a few more ways, and the fact that she didn't level her Sentinel class like crazy was wild to me.
