Shot at Love #2

Pucking Fate

Rate this book
How do you tame a puckboy?

Maya Lawrence knew that such a feat was impossible. That’s why, when she got pregnant as a teenager and hockey star Christian Riley signed with the pros, she let him go.

Maya gave up on all her dreams to become a single mother. Her parents and Christian abandoned her when she needed them the most, leaving her to turn to her brother Preston to help raise her son Finley.

Christian Riley never blamed Maya for ending things and breaking his heart after how badly he treated her. In fact, while he never got over her, he didn’t expect Maya to ever speak to him again. But when Christian’s rival, Preston, finally breaks the news to him that he has a son, all bets are off.

The last thing Maya wants is the playboy from her past breaking her son’s heart or hers again. That’s why she makes Christian a deal. She’ll give him the summer to spend with Finley as a “family friend” to show her that he’s committed to being a father before letting him have a permanent place in their lives.

Proving to Maya that he can step up to be a father to Finley, and that his puckboy days are behind him, will be the toughest challenge Christian has ever faced.

Fate has finally given him a second chance to take a shot at love, so this time he better not puck around and miss.

Pucking Fate has a HEA and is perfect for fans of swoon-worthy athletes, sizzling chemistry, and second chances that come when you least expect them.

After reading Revenge Puck I was patiently waiting for Maya and Christian’s story and Pucking Fate didn’t disappoint. This second chance hockey romance features single mum Maya who gives up her dreams to become a mum and Christian the father of her boy Finley. Honestly Finley was the real star of this story. I adored the way Christian changed his ways after learning he was a father. I would thoroughly advise reading Revenge Puck first as we learn the back story of all the characters in that one. This was an enjoyable read. I received a complementary copy from Booksirens.

After reading Revenge Puck, I absolutely could not wait for Christian and Maya’s story! As expected, Christian’s glow-up was real. Watching him grow from the star hockey puckboy to a dedicated dad and loyal partner was heartwarming and downright swoony. It was the perfect redemption story, and I couldn’t help but root for an HEA for this adorable family.

It was easy to relate to Maya. Giving up her dreams at a young age to become a mom and then learning to figure out where she fits in the world was truly inspiring. It’s not easy as a woman to gain confidence and stand on your own two feet, but Maya is a strong woman determined to provide the best life possible for her son, Finley.

Oh Finley… this little boy is everything! At 5 years old, Finley is full of spunky energy, and it’s impossible not to smile at his sweet innocence. He added a playfulness to the (sometimes emotionally deep) story.

• Second chance romance
• Hockey Player x Single Mom
• Reformed playboy
• Brother's ex best friend
• No third act breakup

While it’s possible to read this story as a standalone, I’d advise against it. There’s so much backstory that happens in the first book making me believe that this story wouldn’t be as satisfying without experiencing Revenge Puck first. Filled with heart and spice, both are fun and fast reads. I absolutely recommend them! I’m so excited to see what LA Hart has in store for us next. Her sports romances are chef’s kiss!

Thank you to LA Hart and BookSprout for the gifted digital ARC. All opinions expressed are my own.

Christian and Maya's love story

Christian Riley is the Captain of the NHL Greensboro Bobcats. He was introduced in the first book of the series as a great player who is also a conceited, self-centered, manwhore. At the end of the book, he learned that he had a four year old son with Maya Lawrence, sister of Preston Lawrence.
Maya Lawrence was an 18 year old freshman in college when she met Christian. They fell in love and had an awkward sexual encounter, which an embarrassed Christian fled from. She dropped him the next day, discovered that she became pregnant anyway, and then ghosted him.
Preston told Christian that he had a son. Maya refuses to allow the child to learn who his father is, even after Christian spends weeks in Bethesda getting to know him. It is all about what Maya wants and she doesn't want the child to know.
Preston signed with the Bobcats in the off-season and moved to Greensboro. He asked Maya to move with him. Christian asked Maya to move with him. Even though she has no job, no education, no experience, not any means to support herself, she refuses to move, with Preston being forced to maintain 2 residences because she can't pay for anything.
Maya is one of the most unlikeable characters that I have read in a long time. She spends her time feeling sorry for herself. She refuses to trust Christian. She has spent 5 years wallowing, not even knowing what she wants to do with her career. She dropped out of college when she became pregnant, but since then, she has done nothing but care for the child. No online courses, no goals or aspirations, just expecting Preston to care for her and Finley.
I enjoyed the first book in the series, but I don't recommend this book at all. Don't waste your time, even with a HEA.

I skipped the first book and jumped right into this one. My brothers name is Preston so it's a little weird for me 🙄. Anyway, it was straight up a weird dynamic. I'll break it down a little:

(First book)
MMC: Preston
FMC: Elle

(This book)
FMC: Maya (Preston's sister)
MMC: Christian (Maya's baby daddy and Elles ex)

I can't get over that Maya is cool with her brother dating her baby daddy's ex, fling, situationship? And being so accepting? Like...Your ex who you're still in love with and he's still in love with you has fucked your brothers future wife...your future sister in law 🫠 It's just fucking weird. I mean it works out I guess but I couldn't get it out of my head. I was completely disconnected from the book, didn't feel any connection to any of the characters or the story itself. Chrisitian has been a manwhore for the past 5-6 years and you wanna try to convince me that he used fucking around with lots of women as a way to cope over losing the love his life? Someone he only dated for like less than a month or two? 🤷🏻‍♀️ and Maya stays celibate the whole time? 🤦🏻‍♀️ that's a weak storyline.

Honestly, the writing was fine, the story was not.

I hate giving books bad ratings but honestly Maya was insufferable. I understand being heartbroken but not letting the father of your child be the father was insane to me. lol

I am a suckered for any hockey romance. Add in a second chance romance with a unknown child i will not be able to put the book down! This book was no different, a few moments reminded me of the best love stories we see in movies and TV. When a man writes you letters you never receive, where he pours his heart and soul out to you im a goner, give me my notebook moment! The heartache and yearning we see from both Maya and Christian is beyond my favorite part because we get to see them struggling with what their heart say vs their head. But the heart always wins.

I am on the fence with this one. I love a good hockey romance, But Maya and Christian in the beginning felt rushed, and it felt forced. Christian spent pretty much the entire book apologizing and begging to be part of his son’s life and Maya continually did the “I don’t know, maybe”. Giving him mixed signals and making him feel like he was the only one that had to prove themselves.

Maya comes across as very insecure and wishy washy, and I get why. She wants to prove she can make it on her own after living with her brother and wants to stand on her own to feet. But she could have taken steps at any time to do that..

I liked Christian he bent over backwards for someone that never fully trusted him even after repeatedly being there and showing up. He wasn’t perfect but he continually tried and stepped up. He definitely could have been a lot angrier about being kept from his child but he wasn’t which showed what a huge forgiving heart he had.

By the end I did start to like it better and liked Maya somewhat, but she still was not my favorite.

I just couldn’t connect with them as a couple or with this story even though it had potential.

Not everyone story is for everyone and I’m sure there will be those that love it, it just wasn’t for me.

⭐️⭐️⭐️️⭐️/ ️🌶️🌶️🌶️

LA Hart won me over with Revenge Puck, so I couldn’t wait to read Pucking Fate and go back to the world LA has created. This story at the heart of it was a second chance for a family to become whole. The growth our two MCs go through and show throughout this story will touch your heart and make you believe in good again. I needed a fluffy romance and this book hit the spot!

Christian and Maya are amazing characters. Maya has gone through so much in her young life and when she decides to give up her dreams to raise a baby on her own, she truly emulates what mothers do for their kids. The decision to not tell the father wasn’t easy, but it was the best choice for her and her child. Her brother steps up to help, but being the father’s rival, in a heated moment, he lets Maya’s secret slip. Now the father wants a chance to prove he can be there for both the woman he let get away and the son he never knew he had.

Christian goes through the most change throughout the book and LA made this well worth the read. When Maya walked away from him, he knew it was for the best. He wasn’t a good guy, but wasn’t ready to change his ways. Being one of the hottest hockey players, on and off the ice, allowed him to never spend the night alone. When he finds out about his son and Maya keeping it a secret, he wants another chance to be the father he thinks he deserves to be. When Maya gives him the summer to prove himself, he vows to not mess up.

It is impossible to not love the characters and storyline within this book. The second book in her Shot at Love series, it is filled with heart, passion, wit, and romance. Maya and Christian had to fight for their second chance, but once they were both in, they were all in. Finley, their son, is an absolute joy and LA captured a five year boy perfectly. You can read this book as a standalone, but LA will capture your heart. This whole series is worth reading and both books will make you fall in love!

As always, review any author notes before reading.

This is the second book in the series by L.A. Hart and equally as good as the first.
Maya is a young single mother of an adorable, spirited little boy, and the sister of NHL Hockey player Preston. Until Preston moved away to play hockey for another team, he helped take care of both Maya and son Finley. Maya's parents disowned her when she became pregnant so now that Preston has moved away, she is all on her own. She takes each day in stride as any good mother does, but being both mom and dad is wearing her thin. She is such a good mom and you really feel for her in those moments it gets to be too much. She never stopped thinking about Finley's Dad, but has seen his playboy antics in the media and felt she would never be enough for him. Kind of heartbreaking.
Finley's father, Christian, also an NHL player (in more ways than one) had not been in the picture and was living the usual hockey star womanizer lifestyle. Until Preston told him he had a son and his life takes a drastic turn. Maya had always been the one that got away and he never got over her. Finding out she had their child has him wanting things he never thought he would. He decides to go after them both to win his family back.
Maya tries to hold Christian at arms length, but she soon finds out resistance is futile when it comes to the only man she has ever loved. He is very present in their lives and does so many sweet and thoughtful things it will have you swooning. The chemistry between them is still as hot as ever and makes for some steamy reading. I loved how their story progressed and how good they all are together.
The story flowed so well I read it in less than a day and wished I could have more. Definitely worth the read.

Thank you BookSirens ARC team.

I think the concept of the book was solid, but something just didn’t quite work. Honestly, I believe it was the plot development that fell short. It’s not that I completely disliked it, but there was something missing that kept me from fully enjoying the story.

I felt like some key elements needed more depth, especially everything surrounding the child. I’m not sure how to explain it clearly, but it felt like the story touched on themes I usually love — secret babies, unexpected pregnancies, second chances — and yet… I just didn’t connect with it.

That’s the thing: I didn’t connect with the book. Or maybe it wasn’t the story itself, but the way I experience this author’s writing.

That’s why I’d love to read another book by her — to see if it was just this particular story that didn’t work for me, or if maybe her style just doesn’t spark that flame in me. Maybe it lacked that something, that spark that makes you feel truly hooked and invested.

Anyway, this is my sincere and honest opinion, shared with love and respect. Not every book is for every reader, and that’s okay. I’ll keep reading — that never changes — and I really hope to find a different story by this author that lights that reading fire I’m always looking for.

This is the second book in this series, but I haven't read the first and can say it doesn't hinder reading this book. Maya is a single mom to her five year old son, whilst living with her brother. She feels as though she really needs to start standing on her own two feet. Well now she's going to have to with her brother signing for a new team The Bobcats and moving out of state. This will be a whole new start for them both. Christian was shocked when he found out he's a dad and his son is five years old, how could she not tell him. He knew signing to the professional team meant change but he'd have tried to make it work. Now he needs to see his son. Maya doesn't know how Christian will react will he want to fight for custody. How can she ever trust him again. He's a professional hockey player she's not naive she's seen the pictures of all the girls he's been with. Can he really be a dad he's no idea of how to be a dad, his own dad hadn't been the best. This story shows how difficult the transition to parenthood can be. Add to the mix a failed relationship with misunderstandings on both sides. Sit back and read this spicy yet romantic will he or won't he story. I'm looking forward to reading more from this series

Si les llama la atención esta historia, les recomiendo saltarse el libro anterior, porque de lo contrario no van a creer que Christian realmente ama a Maya.

---
Spoilers::

Fated To Be Together

Maya & Christian were meant to be together but when the day arrives, she lets Christian follow his dream to be the greatest hockey player. As the years go by, he becomes rich & famous while Maya raises their son he knows nothing about. When he learns from another player that she’s a single mom & he’s a dad, he does the math & steps up to be a dad. It hurts him deeply that she didn’t tell him she went through the pregnancy & denied him the first few years to be with Finley & Maya. A very touching story of two young people who are destined to be together & her greatest sacrifice is to let Christian go rather than tying him down when he’s not ready to settle down. Christian wants to be with Maya & their son but will one summer be enough proof he’s 100% in to be a full-time dad & to be by her side, faithful & loving towards her? Well-written & an emotional one that tugs at the heart strings. A good second-chance romantic hockey story.

One of the best things about Pucking Fate is how it blends romance with family drama. Maya is a strong, independent single mom, and it’s easy to connect with her struggles. Christian, meanwhile, goes through a lot of growth, showing he’s more than just a cocky hockey star. Their chemistry is undeniable, but the real emotional pull comes from Christian’s attempts to bond with his son, Finley.

That said, the dialogue doesn’t always match the maturity level of the characters, which can make certain conversations feel a little off. Plus, while Christian's transformation is a big part of the story, some of his personal growth feels unfinished, like there were threads meant to go somewhere but never really did.

Still, Pucking Fate is an enjoyable read. It delivers plenty of swoon-worthy romance, heartfelt moments, and an engaging love story that makes it easy to keep turning the pages.

This was a nice trip back to the hockey team I fell in love with in book one of this series (Preston and Elle's book), and we get to see the HEA for Maya and Christian here.
(If you haven't already consumed Revenge Puck, I suggest reading that one before this one, so everything makes sense.)

While the chemistry and forever feelings are here in this couple, Maya made a choice that has the potential to derail her and her son's happiness forever. I really appreciated Christian's attempts to overcome every hurdle presented, to keep moving towards the HEA that is just outside of his grasp.

I really enjoyed the banter and relationships between the characters, but was frustrated with Maya several times. I mean, c'mon girl... what else do you need to see from him!? IYKYK.

Overall, this is an easy book to enjoy, and a fun series to read, one that I recommend.
I can't wait for the next one.
Fortunate to have received an ARC (thank you), I happily leave my review.

I have been lucky enough to ARC read both this book and the first book in this series, and this was even better than the first!

I was pleasantly surprised to love Christian. The author did such a good job of making us hate him in the first book that I wasn’t sure how I’d feel here, but he was perfect. I even got a little emotional at parts.

My only thing was I wish Maya didn’t drag out her decision so much. I got really irritated with her at one point because she couldn’t get over her issues and just give Christian a chance! I was yelling at her in my head. I felt like it was a little too much, where I found myself looking at the % complete and thinking, only 65%? Come ON Maya!!

Overall, I enjoyed this one, more than the first book. I would definitely like to read another in this series! Maybe Luke, or Spencer??

Received as an ARC and leaving my honest review voluntarily. Book 2 in the series so characters from book 1 are present throughout, especially since Maya and Preston are siblings. The story continues from book 1, when Christian finds out about his son Finley and he learns to navigate this new reality, his emotions and feelings for Maya. Both of them lost so much time, because of decisions they had made as a knee jerk reaction, and because of past emotional trauma- of abandonment, loss, believing in their self worth. I liked the realism of Maya's fears, as frustrating as they were, and Christian's unwavering feelings for her and his wanting to make things right. Their journey to HEA is not an easy one, with emotion, trust and history to overcome, but love does come through in the end and we see them growing their happy family, in the sweet and emotional epilogue.

Maya and Christian.

Shew lord.. this book had me feeling all kinds of things. This is my 2nd book by L.A. Hart. The first books leaves us right before this one begins. When Christian finds out he's a dad.

This second chance hockey romance will have you hoping for the best but preparing for the worst.. because Maya is preparing to be hurt and not really giving Christian the benefit of the doubt. Yes, he is a playboy or has been before. He is out to prove that he never stopped loving Maya and all of those women he was with.. were just a distraction to numb his aching heart.

Maya does not give Christian an inch.. because honestly, she doesn't fully trust him. Over time though, she starts to see that he is willing to show up for his son and for her.

If you're looking for a second chance romance where the MMC is down bad for the FMC then Pucking Fate needs to be on your TBR.

🏒 Book Review🏒

4⭐ 3🌶️

This was the redemption arc I really wanted for Christian, the MMC, and I was absolutely thrilled. I was so looking forward to this book after I read the first in the series. I absolutely love that Christian wanted to be a part of his son's life and the life of Mayor, which meant he needed to work really hard and that this wasn't going to be an easy win.
This was a subtle shift to love and it was almost like a slow rising tide. There was no major breakthrough and it was a lovely change. The only thing that disappointed me was the lack of sports. There was a little sport but not as much as I would have liked. Not sure if there'll be more in this series but I sure hope so.

Big thanks to Book Sirens and LA Hart for a copy of this book. This is my honest opinion.

Now, Maya was abandoned by everyone when she became a teen mum.
But… This was complicated…

Their breakup was messy - when you read what he did to precipitate her breaking up with him, you’ll likely rage.
Then, what he does when he finds out she’s pregnant was gobsmacking…. Then, more information comes to light, but whoa…. I don’t blame her for thinking the worst. I actively loathed her parents, and firmly believe in zero second chances on this one…

Overall…

You’ll rage. You’ll laugh. You’ll cry. You’ll swoon.
You might also fall a little in love with Christian when you see how ‘all-in’ he is. I had moments where I felt for Maya, others I was frustrated, but one thing remained constant. I couldn’t and wouldn’t put the book down.

Really liked the story of Maya, Finley, and Christian & how hard Christian fought to be in Finley’s life after suddenly finding out he was a father to an almost 5 year old boy with his ex/the sister of his former best friend.
The speed that Christian jumps into Maya and Finley’s life was surprising, but I noticed the little things the author did to make it seem more believable. There was a lot of angst/medium burn that I really got invested in with these two!
Overall the story was very good and heartfelt, the chemistry and heat between the main characters was good, and I definitely enjoyed the whole book. Looking forward to the next one in the series!!.

Hold my wine. 🍷 This was a whole emotional rollercoaster and I did not have the seatbelt on 😭🔥

Christian Riley came back from the land of the Puckboys and gave us a redemption arc so satisfying I needed a cigarette and a group hug. 💦 The way he tried to prove himself to Maya? I MELTED. And when he finally started to bond with Finley?? DEAD. GONE. SOBBING. 😭

Maya, girl, you’re strong as hell—but I would’ve folded after the first “daddy” moment. 😩

This was slow burn, but in the best possible way—tension like coiled wire, spice that scorched once it landed, and just enough humor and heart to keep me hooked. Loved Revenge Puck, but this sequel??? Everything.

📌 Second chance 💔
📌 Single mom 💪
📌 Dad redemption arc 🏒
📌 Sweet kid + simmering tension = 5 STARS

Pucking Fate is a story about redemption. Christian has made mistakes in the past but his biggest mistake was letting Maya go. When truths come to light about Maya and Finley, he will do everything possible to get back in her good graces so that he can be a part of her and Finley’s lives. It was fulfilling to see Christian mature and step up. I loved the progression of Maya and Christian’s relationship and how they both were willing to compromise to make the best decisions for their family. This was a very touching and heartwarming story about redemption, forgiveness, and a second chance at love and happiness.

• 2nd chance Romance
• Hockey Player x Single Mom
• Brother's ex best friend
• Secret Child
• No Third Act Break Up

We get Christian & Maya's intro in the first book in this series, Revenge Puck, where Christian learns he is the father of Maya's four year old son Finley.

Christian changing his playboy ways to prove to Maya that he's ready to be a dad to Finley, discovering their impossible to believe back story (that made me chuckle) & watching them realize their love is still there.

4 ☆ overall - would recommend for a light read with a guaranteed HEA & NO Third act breakup!

I was anticipating Christian's story from when he and Maya appeared in Revenge Puck. This is a second chance romance with a secret child. Christian's character shows so much growth. I totally disliked Maya, but that can reflect what a good author can do with a story plus I normally don't like secret kids. Finley is a likable kid. The author shares Maya's background and I don't have a brother who is a professional hockey player, but I wanted to shake her and tell her to grow up. I struggled with how Preston and later Christian enabled her. I'm hoping the next character to get a story is Luke or Jason.

I loved reading this story. I couldn't put it down. Maya and Christian had a lot to overcome in order for them to get a second chance. Christian made a lot of mistakes to make up for. They had a child together that he never knew. When he discovers that, he wants to get to know his son. He also wants Maya back. She was the one that got away. Maya never got over Christian and the best thing that came out of their quick relationship was their son. Will they be able to get a second chance at happiness together?

I have been waiting for this (very impatiently) since I finished ARC reading Revenge Puck. I don't think I've ever read a book where the Author was able to redeem someone as thoroughly as this Author did for Christian. He was everything, lover boy extraordinaire. The plot was well paced, the characters were lovable, and the resolution was everything I wanted it to be. I will recommend this series to everyone I know. I can't wait to see where the Author takes this universe.

Maya was torn between not wanting to ever see Christian again and wanting her son to get to know his father. After 5 years of not telling him he had a son, her brother confronts Christian with the truth. The story was endearing as little Finlay got to know his dad and Maya was wondering if she could trust her heart. Christian and Maya’s passion shone through and was fiery. Loved this second book in the Shot at Love series.

This is Christian and Maya + Finley’s story. We met them in Elle and Preston’s book, the first one in this series. They were a couple way back when they were young, got pregnant and didn’t know how to deal with it. A lot of things happened and interfered in their relationship, they didn’t know what to do, and drifted apart. However, the baby was born without him knowing and now he learns about it and wants to rectify the situation. It’s a beautiful journey and a second chance at love for them, with the added bonus of a beautiful and talented boy.
