When Homicide Detective Cameron Gates befriends Dolly, the little old lady who lives across the street, she is warned not to get lured into helping the elderly woman by investigating the unsolved murder of one of her girls. “She’s senile,” Cameron is warned. “It’s not a real murder.” Such is not the case. After Dolly is brutally murdered, Cameron discovers that the sweet blue-haired lady’s “girl” was a call girl, who had been killed in a mysterious double homicide. Meanwhile, Prosecuting Attorney Joshua Thornton is looking for answers to the murder of a childhood friend, a sheriff's deputy whose cruiser is found at the bottom of a lake. The deputy had disappeared almost twenty years ago while privately investigating the murder of a local prostitute. It doesn’t take long for the Lovers in Crime to put their cases together to reveal a long-kept secret that some believe is worth killing to keep undercover.

JUST WONDERFUL! I LOVED THIS, REMINDS ME OF MYSTERIES OF THE PAST: MURDER SHE WROTE, PERRY MASON, ROCKY KANE, ROCKFORD FILES AND HART TO HART. I HAVE READ ALL OF MS CARR'S BOOKS SO I THOUGTH BUT FOUND AT THE END OF THIS BOOK I HAD MISSED 2 OF THEM. I WENT RIGHT TO AMAZON AND GOT THEM. THIS IS JOSHUA & CAMERON'S, WHICH I MET IN PREVIOUS BOOKS, THEY ARE SUCH A GREAT COUPLE. I LOVE ALL THE CHARACTERS IN MS. CARR'S BOOKS, SO WELL DEVELOPED, SEEMS AS IF I KNOW THEM PERSONALLY. ;D THIS STORY HAD SO MANY CHARACTERS TO CHOOSE FROM (who-done-it) I ALWAYS WRITE DOWN WHO I THINK IT IS. I'M HAPPY TO SAY TWO OF THE POSSIBLES I PICKED WERE RIGHT. YEAH ME! I LIKE THE SETTING, SINCE I HAPPEN TO LIVE IN THE "BURGH" (Pittsburgh, PA) SO IT FEELS NICE TO SEE NAMES OF PLACES THAT ARE VERY WELL KNOWN TO ME. I LOVE ALL THE ANIMALS TOO, SINCE I'M A CAT LOVER. IRVING IS REAL SPECIAL TO ME, ALSO ONE DAY I HOPE TO GET ME A MAINE COON CAT. THEY ARE ONE OF THE COOLEST BREEDS OUT THERE. I'M LOOKING FORWARD TO READING THE TWO BOOKS I MISSED, I KNOW I'M GONNA LOVE THEM TOO. . .WHAT'S NOT TOO LOVE? NUTTIN'! ;D

Random thoughts prior to full review:

Lauren Carr's characters are expertly crafted and her plot seamlessly flows in her latest mystery novel, Real Murder. Another novel in the enticing Lovers in Crime series featuring Joshua Thornton and Cameron Gates, lovers of mysteries will not want to miss this gem.

Carr does a phenomenal job keeping readers on their toes in this fast-paced novel, especially as Joshua and Cameron begin to uncover the truth behind an 18 year old cold-case. While at times I was certain Carr was making the truth much to obvious for readers, time and time again she threw me for a loop with the revelation of new evidence and motives, causing me to continually point the finger in multiple directions. And once again, though I tried very hard, Carr remained one step ahead of me and floored me with her final reveal in terms of the killer's identity.

Of course, I love how strong-willed Cameron is, and the fact that she's just as smart and capable as her husband, Joshua, makes them a great team. And Irving? The fat cat that looks like a skunk? Priceless. Carr always adds amazing, fun animal companions to her novels, and it might just be true that Irving and his antics make him one of my favorites of the novel--and series, as it were.

Complete with many layers, including a little romance, familial grudges, humor, and of course, sluething, Carr has created a great read that will leave readers satisfied in all aspects.

If you love mysteries, I highly suggest you pick up a copy of Real Murder by Lauren Carr. Though part of a series, each novel stands alone, and if you've never picked up one of Carr's novels, then this is definitely one with which to start. Four stars.

When Police Detective Cameron Gates and her new husband Joshua Thornton, a prosecuting attorney, team up to solve a string of murders, including some cold cases from 1976 and 1996, they are stunned by the domino effect that seems to be in play.

The brutal murder of Dolly Houseman, an elderly woman who lives across the street, starts the chain of events, and as we meet the various players and realize the connections between them all, it is impossible to put "Real Murder (A Lovers in Crime Mystery Book 2)" down.

What was Dolly's mysterious business, and how did her former life set her up as a target? What did Mike Gardner's murder in 1996 have to do with events in the present, and to whom was he secretly connected?

For a while, it seemed as though none of the clues would lead to anyone, and then, almost as if it were planned out, everything started to come together. Could it have been a mysterious package containing tapes that helped them sort it all out?

As usual, Carr's delightful and likable characters, including a couple of interesting pets, kept me reading and enjoying every moment. Set primarily in West Virginia, I loved the settings, as well as the plot that was twisted enough to keep me trying to figure things out. Definitely another five star read.

My Thoughts…

So, I’ve been lucky enough to get the chance to review this entire series even though it began years ago. It’s particularly exciting because I don’t have to wait years to read each sequel. It’s a lot like Netflix through my audiobooks, I get to binge listen. Listening in this way makes remember the details from book to book much easier.

This installment was very interesting in its construction. There are multiple murders inside this storyline spanning decades, showing the cultural differences years can make in solving a crime. When a prostitute and her client are murdered in a brothel, the police barely attempt to solve the crime because no one interested in justice for these victims. In the present day, however, the victims jobs and recreations are of less concern than a killer running free.

The way in which these murders are woven into the lives of our lead characters is intricate and well thought out. Bringing in some of the drama from the previous novel, Joshua and Cameron continue their teamwork to solve a very personal crime to Josh. Luckily, there skill and relationship seem up to the challenge.

I love the personal touches Lauren Carr always puts into her work. The bright and colorful animal characters bring heart into any situation. She loves to use food to anchor time and events, which is exactly what most people do. We gather around food and use it to comfort and support each other. In this particular series, an ice cream sundae is the star, and each time it is talked about, I’m jealous that I can’t get one in real life.

Conclusion

If you enjoy mystery or crime novels, you should be reading Lauren Carr. She’s a great writer, with good stories and even better characters.

AUDIO BOOK REVIEW. As is always the case with Lauren Carr’s mysteries, readers need to hold on tight and pay attention because the twists and turns and multiple plots in REAL MURDER add-up to one crazy road trip. REAL MURDER is the second book in the Lovers in Crime series, but it stands alone just fine and the author does a good job of getting readers up to speed. (Though now I am interested in reading book one, DEAD ON ICE, when “the lovers” aren’t yet married.)

I jumped into REAL MURDER without actually reading the book’s description. Having read (with my ears) several other books by Lauren Carr, I knew I wouldn’t be disappointed. The downside of doing this is that one of my very favorite characters in the book got murdered – not a spoiler since it’s revealed in the book’s description, but the very short time Dolly was in the story, she was brilliant. This just goes to show the level of excellence of the author’s characterization talent. (Side note: I love that Cameron is so real and shows readers that even the most kick-butt women who seem to have their acts together still have self-doubts about their aging bodies and their attractiveness. Even better? She knows the fault in her thinking, has an eff-it attitude, and drowns her sorrow in fudge sundaes. REAL.)

REAL MURDER is one convoluted story with an incredibly large cast of characters (and of course, a few scene-stealing pets), multiple layers, and a lot of murders that span decades. (I believe the print version may have a list of characters to help keep them straight.) As you read/listen, you think surely there must be a connection between all these people and the new and cold cases; however, Carr misleads and redirects readers from every fully figuring out the answers. Maybe you figure out the killer, but can you figure out the motive? Or maybe you figure out the motive, but can you figure out who had it? Maybe you don’t have a clue about any of it, but the bottom line is that you will be compelled to continue until it’s all spelled-out in a fabulous and fully satisfying conclusion.

ABOUT THE NARRATION: Mike Alger has been the narrator for all of Carr’s books that I’ve listened to, and he does a great job in Real Murder. As is the norm for Alger’s narrations (and most others), I listened at 1.25x. Technically, there weren’t any issues and Alger’s pacing was even. Male characters are more natural sounding than the voices of the females, and Alger nails the voicing of the slimy, shady men so that readers’ ears will perk up and the distrust radar will turn on. The only thing that seemed off was Alger’s pronunciation of “madame.” When in reference to a woman who runs a brothel, I hadn’t heard this pronunciation before, so it caught me off guard every time.

Carr’s mysteries are always engaging and REAL MURDER is a real escape and enjoyment. I highly recommend this book to readers who love cozy mysteries, with quirky but realistic characters that you won't want to let go.

Thank you to iRead Book Tours and the author for providing me an audio download in exchange for my honest opinion – the only kind I give. This full review and other special features on Hall Ways Blog.

4 STARS

I love to read Lauren Carr's mysteries. Real Murder fits right in with her Lovers in Crime series. There are a lot of murders over the years and other crimes in two or more states. Joshua and Cameron have to figure out who did what in whose case. There are many suspects, lots of mysteries to untangle, humor and lots of ice cream. You might be able to guess parts of the stories but probably not all of where the book is taking you. Also a clean murder mystery.

I really like the characters in this series of books. While Joshua and Cameron are the main two characters there are many characters in the series that really add to the stories, and the humor including the animals.

Joshua Thorton is Prosecuting Attorney. He is also one of the last persons to talk to a Deputy before he disappeared years ago. He felt he left his friend down. He is just newly wed to Cameron. Joshua is also the father of 5 kids. The only one at home is Donny 16.

Cameron Gates is a homicide detective in neighboring state. She gets hurt on the job and given two weeks off. It does not stop Cameron from working. Cameron has a big cat that looks like a skunk. He brings a lot of humor to the story.

I enjoyed Real Murders and look forward to reading more of Lauren Carr's stories in the future.

Lauren Carr's latest release is destined to be another hit. In this fast paced age turner the relationship of Joshua Thornton and Cameron Gates develops to a new level in an interesting mix of marriage, murder and investigation. Mixed with a dash of humor, Carr unravels several murders including that of an old friend of Joshua and a "sweet" old lady who once took care of Joshua (although she may have secrets of her own). The setting located in a small, three state area adds to the enjoyment I found in this new mystery as I live near these areas. It is easy to feel a part of each investigation as Lauren easily draws the reader in as part of the setting and research in solving each of the murders. This is another must read for mystery lovers.

Carr's novel is a delight on several levels. To start, her characters have occupations that make their detecting natural in contrast to a character like Miss Marple. The characters are well developed, and that goes beyond the principals. The plot of this installment is complex without being confusing, and the resolution is eminently satisfying. Finally, the setting, located where three States abut creates some interesting byplay in terms of jurisdictional issues.

After reading Dead on Ice, the first book in the Lovers in Crime series, I was eager to dig into this second book in the series, Real Murder. And Lauren Carr did it again! I liked this one even better than Dead on Ice. Like her other books, this one has so many layers that all come together in the end. There are several murders being investigated and as a reader you're pulled in, your mind trying to figure out the connection and the clues that will lead to the killer(s).

Once again, lovers Joshua and Cameron are on the same case. Cameron is a strong kickass woman, but she is also vulnerable and feminine. This made her so likable. She and Joshua are now married in this book, and I loved how Carr infuses marital bliss and second marriage issues into her stories. It makes her characters believable even as the action never stops. Best of all, I'm now familiar with most, if not all, of Carr's characters from her various series and their distinct personalities are consistent every time I meet up with them in her books.

As is Carr's trademark, interspersed with the murder mystery is romance, some great pet humor (a Great Dane dog and Irving the skunk cat) and a colorful cast of shady characters. The theme of small town secrets is strong again in this book. In this one, we come to find out that the sweet old woman who lives on the same street and used to babysit Joshua as a boy was once a "madam" of a high-end bordello! Carr's books are clean but she doesn't shy away from realistic and sordid situations that make her mysteries good.

I both listened to parts of the audio version of the book and read parts of it on my Kindle. I enjoyed Mike Alger's narration. He was engaging and great for the men's voices but I sometimes could not distinguish the female ones as quickly. My auditory skills are not quite as advanced as my reading, where I can quickly read through a page without missing a beat. Because this was a mystery with many characters, I preferred reading the cast of characters that Lauren Carr includes at the beginning of her books, and the prologue too. I didn't want to miss even one clue! That is what is so much fun about Carr's books. She keeps the reader engaged throughout in trying to catch the killer!

I've already read the third book in this series, Killer in the Band. All three books in this series were good, but I liked this one the best. I look forward to Carr's next awesome mystery!

Disclosure: I was given a complimentary copy. I willingly chose to read and post an honest review of it.

The 'real' thing a good 'ole mystery! Lauren Carr gives readers a plot/storyline that keeps you engaged from page 1 and all the way through the twists, turns, humor and romance.

Real Murder begins with a years old prologue that sets the scene for a present day murder.

The main character Joshua and his new wife Cameron are smart, savy, cunning and human. Joshua has had quite a career from the Navy to currently the Prosecuting Attorney. Cameron is equally as talented and experienced.

When past murders and deaths are brought to the present the couple end up investigating a long string of murders, suicides and possible accidents that end up all being tied together.

Real Murder is the second book I have had the chance to read in the series. I was introduced to Joshua's daughter Tracy for the first time. As well as a newer understanding of his wife Cameron.

As each book in the series progresses each of the characters are developed more and new characters come into the mix. I love that all the Lauren Carr's series seem to cross over with the characters meeting each other and becoming collegues and friends and even
soul mates (see the Thorny Rose series featuring Joshua Thorntons son and Mac Faraday's daughter).

There are a lot of regular characters and suspects, victims and sub-characters that take a lot of getting to know. I did have to double check the cast of characters in the beginning. I could not keep the police chief and medical examiner straight!

If you love a good cozy mystery you'll love all of Lauren Carr's books. Real Murder is a great cozy read filled with twists and turns and surprises!

I received a complimentary copy.

I chose to read this book after receiving a free e-copy from the author. All opinions in this review are my own and completely unbiased.

I have read quite a few of Lauren Carr’s books, and I’m never disappointed. Although she writes several different series, most of the characters are related in some way. So, even when I start a new series, I usually know a little bit about one or more of the characters.

Real Murder is the second book in the Lovers in Crime series. I recently read the first book, Dead on Ice, and I like reading series in order when I can, so I was looking forward to reading this one.

Joshua Thornton and his new wife Cameron are once again involved in a case. An old friend of Joshua’s disappeared several years ago, and his body is finally found. Joshua makes it his mission to find answers. At the same time, Cameron is working on another case involving the murder of a sweet old neighbor. The way these cases end up being intertwined is clever.

The murder mysteries are interesting, but the relationship between Joshua and Cameron is also an important part of Real Murder. They’re newlyweds but they do have their moments. They got married without a big wedding which is causing some friction with Joshua’s adult children. Joshua and Cameron do a good job at making things work even if sometimes it takes them a little while to figure things out. Lauren Carr does a great job of making the characters “real.”

I definitely recommend Real Murder. Along with the mystery and drama there is a little suspense and humor. I’m looking forward to reading the next Lovers in Crime book.

Real Murder is the exciting second installment from Lauren Carr’s series, Lovers in Crime. Readers catch back up with the Homicide Detective, Cameron Gates, and Prosecuting Attorney, Joshua Thornton. Cameron helps her new elderly friend and neighbor, Dolly, by investigating a long ago murder. Dolly, too, then becomes a murder victim herself. While, Joshua, is looking into the murder of an old friend, who was killed investigating another murder. Will Cameron and Joshua be able to solve the murders before it is too late and another suspicious death occurs?
I have enjoyed Lauren Carr’s mysteries and Real Murder does not disappoint. I believe this one has more twists and turns that often kept me guessing what could possibly happen next. I had the pleasure of listening to the audible version of this story and Mike Alger does a fabulous performance bringing the characters to life. He is very talented. I could not help to giggle at some of the scenes while listening to his narration. I love the dynamic duo of Cameron and Joshua. They are so fun together.

I am giving Real Murder a well deserved five plus stars. I would give it one hundred stars if I could. I can not wait to find out what will happen next in the third book from the Lovers in Crime series, Killer in the Band. I highly recommend this one for readers who enjoy a fun, clean, quick, and suspense filled mystery. I do not think they will be disappointed. I loved it!

I received the audible version of this book from the author. This review is 100% my own honest opinion.

Audiobook Tour: Real Murder by Lauren Carr There a murder or murders that no one want to unsolved. It seem that their a killer that has yet to be answered. It all starts with the discovery of the missing sheriff deputy Mike Gardner and his cruiser in the lake.

Another excellent and complicated collection of mysteries (and murder) from author Lauren Carr.
You can read (or listen to) this as a stand alone, but this is a cast and world you will find yourself being pulled into and want to visit again and again.
Josh and Cameron are now married but still in the honeymoon phase, with the required adjustments. Cam also has adjustments to make after being injured and required to take "time off."
Cameron has to meet and get to know Josh's neighbors, including an elderly woman who knew Joshua since he was very young. She has her own secrets from her younger days. When she tries to tell people they wave her off as going senile in her old age.
Another mystery from years past (nearly twenty) and also hitting close to home, involve a deputy who has been missing, and Josh feels guilty. Sometimes we have to accept our inability to make different choices. When this decades later mystery as a major break, that also hits too close to home.
It was fun to get to know Josh's kids at a very young age. Also adding entertainment and humor to this book are the furry family members.

With many twists and seemingly unrelated turns and events, this book will take some focus if you want to catch all the clues liberally sprinkled across the pages. It is worth a second look once you find out how it ends.

Totally didn’t expect the sweet little old lady next door to be a reitred madam. Not only that but to have so many secrets that could harm so many in the end. that was one clever little lady.

Here Cameron must wade through half truths, the past and solve who killed who and why. Along side her is Joshua as he delves into the past to try to figure out who killed his friend that was now found and how it connects to Cameron’s case. For they are tied in a way never expected.

What is revealed is explosive and Lauren Carr does a slow reveal as she unravels the little secrets first to gain your attention. she brings you to a peak and than wham reveals something you never expect in this case. and when it is seen the danger that everyone is in because of the implications from the reveal is spiked higher. People will go to any length to protect themselves and the ones involved here have alot to lose.

Cameron is stubborn, smart and wiley and with Joshua by her side with his mind and support there is nothing these two can’t figure out. I love watching them work together and help each other work through their thoughts. I also love watching them with their family and how it keeps them grounded.

This is a wonderful story filled with mystery, intrigue, danger and just keeps you on the edge of your seat wanting more.

This incredible novel that leaves you on the edge of your seat centres around an old woman who appears to be a sweet but perhaps senile lady. The truth is never quite what it seems though! Soon the story is full of unsolved and seemingly unlinked deaths and disappearances that our characters must put together and solve the cases.

In this novel, we have Joshua and Cameron (my personal two favourite characters that make me laugh) as the leads in the investigation that starts off with the murder of an old woman named Dolly (who funny enough used to babysit Joshua). We then begin to unravel quite the story full of deaths and disappearances that are all centred around Dolly’s girls.

The real shock that came to me (and many characters) was that Dolly owned and ran a brothel, not to mention quite the black mailing ring that she was at the centre of. Sadly, many of her girls met untimely deaths and the police officer investigating also ended up dead. But how was Dolly murdered? Why were the girls murdered? What did they know? And who could be at the centre of this?

Real Murder is an excellent, edge of your seat novel that will keep you guessing right until the end. A definite must read!

Another amazing murder mystery from Lauren Carr. I cannot say enough good things about her books. I absolutely love them!

What started out as an old missing person cases turns into murders – plural – several murders.

One case turned into two pretty quickly which evolved in many, many more cases – some stemming all the way back to the sixties – to current time!

There were a lot of players involved, a lot of details, and I was worried that I was going to get lost in it all, but I was able to follow along.

I have said it before and I will say it again – to me, there is nothing better than a good “who done it” read and Lauren delivers that every time.

I had suspicions with one suspect that turned out to be correct. Something about that particular suspect rubbed wrong from the get go. I wondered about another guilty suspect and was completely blown away by the others. I had no idea! And really, my suspicions and wonders were clearly just hunches based on personality because I had zero evidence.

If you enjoy a good mystery that leaves you engaged and guessing – you must pick up any of Lauren’s books! You won’t regret it!

This was another wonderful Lauren Carr mystery. With Lauren's mysteries I never see the ending coming and am always shocked with the who done it. I was not a reader of dective mysteries until I started reading Lauren's work. These were a gift in exchange for an honest review. And I can tell you honestly if you have not read the Lovers in Crime Series by Lauren Carr you should. I listened to all of these in the span of a week. I have been trying to hold off on reading the last one but I think I might have to start it tonight! In this one I loved Dolly's character. She is just wanting to make sure that this girl's death does not get sweep under the rug. She wants to make sure that she gets the justice she deserves. This was another 5 star read for me.

Real Murder (A Lovers in Crime Mystery #2) by Lauren Carr was just as great of a read as Dead on Ice! The series continues to follow Homicide Detective Cameron Gates and Prosecuting Attorney Joshua Thornton. I felt like I connected with Cameron more in this book as I felt like she had more passion behind her desire to solve the case with how the old lady she formed a friendship with ended up dead and "her girl" ended up being a real person that was murdered. The story was riveting and the author did a great job of keeping the story to a fast pace without causing me to miss out on any details!

A gripping crime thriller that weaves past and present into a dark, compelling mystery, this story keeps readers hooked with steady tension and emotional stakes. The layered investigation and strong character dynamics add depth, though the plot can feel complex at times. Overall, it’s an engaging and satisfying read for fans of suspenseful whodunits.

Oh man I got to tell you I’m loving every read I’ve been doing from Lauren Carr! So far I haven’t been disappointed by any of her books and this is another one that I’ll want to have on my shelf. Lauren Carr also has another series, The Mac Faraday Mysteries, which I’m also loving every bit and will have too catch up with very soon!

Both Joshua Thornton (hero) and Cameron Gates (heroine) also made appearances in Lauren’s other books, like in the Mac Faraday Mysteries and in his very own the Joshua Thornton Mysteries.

But in this series, it’s its own series all on its own and it’s just as wonderfully written and told just like Lauren’s other stories.

As you can see from the synopsis this is about an 18 year old crime that has been brought back to light when a body of a missing sheriff deputy is found shot in is cruiser at the bottom of a lake. But not just that but he, the sheriff, was on a case when he disappeared and it involved the murder of another case 20 years prior. Joshua being the last person to have seen and talked to the sheriff, his childhood friend, felt guilty for not going with his friend to help him on his case that fateful day and is now determined to solve the case of his friend’s murder and of the case his friend was trying to solve. Not just that but Cameron takes up a case when she is put on two weeks vacation to recover from her latest injury during one of her cases. But this is a case that many claims as an “unreal” case imagined by an elderly lady with a scandalous past. But as they both try to solve their own case, they find that it’s more than what meets the eye when it starts to intertwine.

I love how both Joshua and Cameron worked perfectly as a team in solving both their cases, unbeknownst to them that it’s all one whole part of a crime. As newlyweds their chemistry was sweet and lovable and didn’t overshadow the whole mystery and crime solving, which is the whole part of the story. If you want to see how these two got together I would highly recommend reading Joshua Thornton Mysteries which is Joshua’s own mystery crime solving cases and his life before this book and series; plus it also tells of how he was before his wife passed and when he found love again.

But anyways, Real Murder was sure a heck of a mystery. Bring in the history of the crimes and the different kinds of characters that will either help or break the case made it all more thrilling. It reminded me a lot of the television show “Cold Case” so it was fabulous. It also kept me on my toes once the story got going into delving into clues and sleuthing about town trying to figure out why the murders happened and who was behind them. I had my suspicions but like always it never goes the way you think they will and that always makes for a great mystery crime story. It was also written in a great paced so you have time to think about the crime and come up with your own theory.

So yes, I definitely recommend this for readers who love a good mystery and crime solving novel. Not just that but any readers should read mystery, they;’re just that great! Plus, you don’t even have to read the other books written by Lauren Carr to have a better understanding of backgrounds on these characters. This book can definitely be read as a standalone but do check out the other books too because they’re just as wonderful.

Note: Even though this is Book 2 in the series, it works just fine as a stand alone.

I’ve read a lot of Lauren Carr books, but this one was one of my favorites. I love the humor and trust between the couples and family members. Cameron is an awesome female character. She stands well on her own but I also like that her man, the sexy grey fox Joshua Thornton, is willing to pamper her a bit as she recovers from a concussion. Cookies always help.

Murders occurring over the span of three generations provide the background for this story. I really loved the old, fancy whore house aspect. The main characters, Cameron and Joshua, are great about sticking to the facts and not coloring the old murders with their ideas about prostitution. The prostitutes were treated like real people in this story, even if they had minor roles. And Dolly made me laugh out loud more than once. So funny!

I know that I mentioned in the past that I thought it was silly that Cameron’s cat got to ride around with her at work (in her cop car), but I really like this cat. He’s colored like a skunk and a large Maine Coon cat on top of that, so plenty of people are a little afraid of him when they first see him. I would love to spend an adventure traipsing around with Irving.

Joshua and Cameron have more than murder on their minds. They were recently married (second marriage for both of them) and Joshua’s adult children had a little problem with them not having a standard wedding. But I loved that Joshua’s adult daughter had a secret of her own when it comes to relationships – ha! Joshua had to grow up a little and realize his kids are adults (and his youngest son is quickly becoming an adult).

The murders were well laid out and then wended together. Since I’m well familiar with Carr’s works, I knew right away that these multiple murders would come together into one large mystery but I don’t want to spoil things for others so I won’t give details. The one that surprised me was the young man in water with his car. On the surface, it had some similarities to the missing officer, but the truth behind it were surprising.

The action is well spaced out with plenty of humor and character growth. I was never bored and I didn’t want to put it down even though I really needed sleep. 5/5 stars.

The Narration: Mike Alger gave a really good performance on this book. Sometimes I find his female voices lacking or a little cartoony, but he really provided a quality narration for this book. I love the way Joshua talks to Irving (the cat who is a little territorial about his woman, Cameron). And I love how Joshua’s son sounds a little like him but also manages to consistently sound younger. Alger’s voice for old Dolly was great, especially when she was telling some little naughty joke. There were no technical issues with this recording. 5/5 stars.

Posted first on Blog Critics as Book Review:'Real Murder, A Lovers In Crime Mystery' by Lauren Carr.

Even in small towns there is a possibility of sinister evil, were the secrets of the past can turn even the most unlikely of foe into a killer. Yet it is also true about small towns that dark secrets are often more difficult to extricate from gossip in an effort to reach the truth.

In Real Murder, A Lovers In Crime Mystery by Lauren Carr, we follow the exploits of Detective Cameron Gates. When she meets an irascible elderly lady she is fascinated by her stories. Yet her new friend, Dolly is labeled as senile and delusional. Dolly has been trying to get someone to help her investigate the murder of one of her girls. Yet as Cameron tries to decipher this story, she realizes that Dolly had never had children and understands the cautions from her friends.

In the meantime, the Prosecutor Joshua Thornton is looking for answers to the disappearance of a close personal friend of his from long ago. The last to ever see him, Joshua is feeling like there is something important that must come to light. His friend is not just another missing person; he was a new sheriff deputy investigating the murder of a local prostitute on his own when he disappeared.

When Cameron’s friend, the elderly Dolly is murdered, she struggles to make sense of things. Why would anyone murder such a sweet old lady? Yet when a cruiser is found in the bottom of a lake, and the body of Joshua’s friend comes to light, only these two, Cameron and Joshua can find the tie that twists the two deaths together.

This is a fun and amazing journey into the past and into the mindset of a killer. Carr’s unerring description of character is spot on and you grow to understand and have feelings for them as though they are quite real. The ability to create such realism has you unable to put down the story until its final page. Yet you will find yourself looking for more, missing the action and camaraderie, and hating on those who are responsible for the death of such wonderful personalities. The realism makes it personal, and that is a difficult chore for some writers.

If you love mystery and history, and the interesting characters of small towns, you will be intrigued by this work. The oeuvre just keeps getting better. Carr has a particular way with infusing loving and trusting personalities into her character’s making them friends instead of just cardboard cutouts.

This would be a great book for a reading club or discussion group. The interest in reducing rumors into truths could add a great deal of spice to any meeting.

There are three timelines in the book ...

In 1976, Ava, a call girl, and her guest are found murdered in Dolly's, the gentleman's club where she works, and the case is never solved.

In 1996, Mike, a sheriff's deputy, disappears on his way to meeting an informant on a case he was working on and is never found.

It's now 2014. Joshua is a prosecuting attorney and Cameron is a homicide detective and they've recently gotten married, though his adult children, especially his daughter, Tracey, aren't too crazy about the idea.

Mike's body has just been found at the bottom of a lake, still in his cruiser and the investigation begins to find out what happened. In the meantime, Cameron befriends Joshua's elderly neighbour, Dolly. Dolly tells Cameron about the murder of Ava, one of her "girls", many years ago and how the murder was never solved. Then Dolly is found brutally murdered.

As more deaths are rediscovered and reinvestigated from the past, it seems like they may be connected ... but are they? I was okay with how everything came to together and the murders were solved in the end.

This is the third book I've read by this author and I enjoyed it ... it is the first of a new series featuring Joshua and Cameron. I liked the writing style and it kept my interest ... I kept wanting to read more to find out what was going to happen. It's written in third person perspective. There are so many twists and turns that it's hard to figure out "whodunnit", which was great.

There were a lot of characters. In case you have a hard time keeping track of them, there was a cast of characters list in the front of the book to refer back to if needed. I liked Joshua and Cameron and thought they were good together. Donny, Joshua's youngest son, is fifteen and lives with them and accepted and liked Cameron in his life. Dolly, though not in the book long, sounded like a feisty colourful old girl who had lots of stories to tell (Al Capone was her "Uncle Al").

I look forward to reading more in this series.

Ah, what harm could there be in listening to an old lady who keeps looking for someone to find out who killed her girl? Cameron is about to realize that there’s a whole lot behind Dolly’s querulous requests, especially after the woman is found murdered. Meanwhile, Josh is off on his own pursuit of truth after a friend from his childhood, a deputy who disappeared years ago shortly after talking to Josh, is found in his cruiser in a lake.

In a mystery that is chock full of connected threads, ominous notes from the past, evidence leading in many directions and a crazy quilt of possibilities, Cameron and Josh—and the reader—are led on a wild chase for the truths of the past and today. Every single time I thought “Aha!”, I was proven wrong and that, of course, propelled me down a mindbending path in search of answers, right along with our sleuthing duo.

This time around, we get a good look at relationships, not only between Joshua and Cam (and the fabulous Irving who is anything but a humdrum kitty) but also in other families. An interesting thread has to do with the tension between Josh’s daughter and Cameron, offset by the cheerful acceptance of a stepmother by Josh’s teenaged son, Donnie. This attention to family dynamics really enhanced the investigations and made me even more invested in the outcome.

Many of the players in this book were vividly brought to life by the narration by Mike Alger and I have to say his talents really shine here, particularly with regards to his evocation of tones and emotions. Anyone looking for their new favorite voiceover performer will be happily surprised by Mr. Alger.
