High Five Novella #6

Sharing Shadow Secrets

Rate this book
“Do you want to be God’s favorite tonight?”

Taylor Williams has one land her first client and finally walk away from her soul-sucking agency job. What she doesn’t plan on is meeting Brandon Dubois—an unexpectedly sweet billionaire’s son—at a party in Lake Geneva, Wisconsin.

Brandon is sober, complicated, and very interested in Taylor—and not afraid to make it known. Their chemistry is undeniable, and soon their connection runs far deeper than playful banter or late-night texts.

Then comes Kyle Rathbone—the viral thirst trap vampire model hired for High Five’s Halloween party—whose presence exposes secrets, shadows, and desires none of them can ignore. With sparks flying on every side, Taylor finds herself caught between two men who want her … and maybe each other too.

Sharing Shadow Secrets is a steamy, emotional MFM romance about chasing dreams, facing the past, and discovering that sometimes being “God’s favorite” means getting everything you never thought you could have.

Delivered More Than My Expectations
Ngl, the theme of this novella -especially after the Fourth of July one (the only one in this series I did not enjoy)- was a bit scary 😬 because you either do it right or you f*** it up.
But I had faith.
And I know Serena listens to and cares about her sensitivity readers. That faith paid off, because she ate up the topic and hacked it in a way that was smart, especially since this was her first time writing about it.

The Main Theme: God's Favourite 🙌
a.k.a. Why Choose • a.k.a. Throuple • a.k.a. MMF
The real test was in their first sex scene together when they all came in, tension high, and Serena… delivered 🔥. That was genuinely hot.
And yes, I can definitely say there was care in making sure no bi- or pan-phobia slipped through. The three of them had equal relationship dynamics, participation, and attention.
Even if emotionally Brandon and Taylor were more advanced that Kyle in the relationship due to timing of bringing him into the fold.
There was a little hack though: Kyle and Brandon already knew each other and had hooked up before the novella (multiple times over the years). That familiarity worked in Serena’s favour. It added depth, attraction, and understanding right from the start. It totally served this theme.

The Characters 🎭
Kyle 🧛🏻
I adored him. He’s wild yet centred. Confident yet vulnerable. He knows what he wants. But… Kyle only shows up around 60%. Even then, the focus was still mainly on Taylor and Brandon. He got two quick dates at the end of the book, which undervalues him so much. Honestly, he elevated the whole story for me: he was the one making me smile and hot-and-bothered. I wanted more.

Brandon 🫂
Sweet, layered, and working through a lot. His arc was handled well. In her note, Serena mentions she was worried about tackling SA, but I think she did a solid job 🙌.
That said, I wish she had been braver. Let them talk more about it, instead of pulling away so quickly. It was clear she (through Brandon) wanted to move past the topic to avoid missteps. But vulnerability is part of the healing.
One nitpick: his therapist telling him “I’m proud of you.” 🚫 This crosses a boundary. Therapy isn’t about external validation, it should’ve been framed as Brandon being proud of himself.

Taylor 🙅‍♀️
…. I really didn’t like her. Too self-centred. Too “I’m not a gold digger, but let me act like one anyway.” Annoying and off-putting (though not as unbearable as Claire, still my personal low).
I want my FMCs to recognise and correct their faults, not just call themselves “assholes” and then keep acting like one.
I even started a drinking game for every time she giggled. Spoiler: I would’ve been on the floor. Girl giggled 39 times. 🥴

Cameos & Christmas Presents for us 🎁
The other cameos? Top notch. Every couple had a moment and it was just adorable. These felt early Christmas gifts.

The Missed Opportunity 🍷🚫
It’s clear these characters have deep backstories and struggles, at least Brandon and Kyle. The book was chunky enough, but sadly, we only grazed the surface.
Also an issue I had: Kyle and Brandon used to hook up while under the influence. That means their sobriety conversation should’ve been deeper between them. Instead, the “sobriety is a dealbreaker” convo happened between Brandon and Taylor, while Brandon and Kyle only brushed past it. The weight of it was misplaced, it should’ve been reversed.

Final Thoughts 💭
I’d recommend this one, especially if you’re in your TikTok era, because it’s definitely written with those girls in mind. It was fun, hot, and handled with care.
That said, I enjoyed books 1–4 more than this one (book 6). Book 5? Not even in my calculations 💀.

Thank you Grey's Promo and Serena for the ARC.

ARC Review!

4.5 stars rounded up!

I haven absolutely loved the high five novella series & this was one of my faves! Halloween theme, MFM, with mental rep. This one was fun, spicy, and even heavy at times. While it covered some sensitive & heavy topics, Serena did this one so well. I was obsessed with Taylor’s character!! She was spunky, independent, and strong willed! The men were perfection too!! I loved getting glimpses of our other fave couples through this one too!

This book SURPRISED ME in every way! I thought this was going to be a cutesy romance. Quick, wham bam and done kind of this. I most certainly did not expect this level of spice!!!! Girl you had me kicking my feet and blushing 😊. The plot, the spice, the characters 😭. I ate it up so fast I didn’t even have time to chew! I loved the friendship between Brandon and Taylor. Yes they had the chemistry from the get go (which I loved that meet cute) but it was the relationship build up that solidified it for me. And please! Can we just talk about how respectful Brandon is for her boundaries 😍. You go Taylor for expressing your needs and wants. The yearning between them was chef 💋 🖤! I could feel the tension and want, I was literally a drooling mess for them. Plus! That little extra mix of Kyle 🤤. How could I not love them even more!!

Taylor, you are a girl boss and I respect that. Your choices are valid and I stand by you 🖤! I loved that she’s a strong female character, but also has needs 🤷‍♀️. Like come on who doesn’t 😂. She knows what she wants and sets a path that she’s willing to follow. Even if she knows that it might get in the way of what her heart and others parts 👀 want.

Brandon 🖤, like a phoenix, you burst into flames knowing you will rise from the ashes better. His journey was one I admired. So truthful and vulnerable. I just wanted to wrap him in a hug and never let got! But we must give him credit for the work he has put in. And I love that he is honest with his expectations from the get go. He knows what he needs out of life and makes it very clear 🖤.

I got this as an ARC from Grey Promotions and Serena Pier 🖤

This book was so much fun!

I really enjoyed Brandon and Taylor finding each other. I really enjoyed how she respected his sober journey with no judgment or pushing to break it, I also loved that he respected that she isn’t sober but also isn’t a lush. They respected each other’s boundaries on the topic.

I loved that we got to see all the characters fr the previous four books weave in and out of this story as it made sense. (I am also glad that I took a day to read book four before reading this one as it made the Halloween Scene that much more special to me)

It was fun to see a beautiful relationship blossom with Brandon and Taylor and he was mature enough emotionally to invite Kyle in.

Gahh! Watching them all evolve from one night together was so fun!!

This book could have gone on forever with their love and the High Five world lol

It ended on a good note though!

What a great way to finish off such a fun little novella series!

I loved each book in the series for very different reasons, but Sharing Shadow Secrets was my absolute favorite. Although I’m not typically into MFM or Why Choose, I enjoyed this book so much. By the end of the book I was questioning if I wanted to be gods favorite! 😉
Taylor is also my favorite girl character of the High 5 novellas, she’s a complete Bad A$$.
This book is very deep and touches on many sensitive topics. All of which are handled with deliberate care and extreme thoughtfulness! (Please make sure to check the trigger warnings)

I have been waiting for this one! I love this holiday novella series. I’m also super slow so it didn’t click that all of these characters are in her other series which made me love it more. DVP was not something I really knew about but now I’m thinking about it more than I should lol 🤭 Taylor is really God’s favorite.

ARC Review

First things first... This is my first ARC reading, and I was super excited to be a part of it, so thank you to Serena and her team.

I have really enjoyed the High Five series thus far, so although I'm not well versed in the why choose realm, I was excited to see what this story's characters had to offer. To say that I was pleasantly surprised would be an understatement. I didn't know if Cupid's Shot could be beat, but I think this one did it.

There were some heavier topics for sure, but I thought they were handled tastefully and handled in a way that both didn't glorify the trauma nor victimize the character. You really felt what the character was feeling, and I found myself cheering them on as they came into their own again.

If I had one complaint, it'd be that I wanted more of Taylor and Brandon by themselves. And of course I'd have loved for it to be longer, but then it wouldn't be a novella lol.

Overall, I really enjoyed this much more than expected. I'm sad this series is coming to a close, but I've very much enjoyed my time with all of these characters. it's been so cool to see the growth in Serena's writing too.

100% recommend this book and the rest of the series.

Again, thank you to Serena and her team for giving me early access to this. 💕

This was my Favorite book in this series!! 💯🤘

It is longer than the others, so you get to spend more time in this world. Plus, we get more interaction from the characters from the first 5 books. 🤩
Spoiler (but not really)...
Their Halloween costumes match their respective books 🖤
SWOON 😍

Even though this book is longer than your average Novella, it is still a quick read. So easy to get consumed by the story, the characters, this universe.
These books flow so well together.
If you haven't noticed from previous reviews, I'm a HUGE fan of the High Five Novellas. 🥰🤩

🔥 SSS is H!O!T! And the plot is THERE!
We have a Girl Boss who knows what she wants and doesn't let a six-pack or a billionaire's pickle stop her from reaching her goals. It actually helps motivate her 😊. And she gets "doubly rewarded" for her achievements.
There's some yearning and lots of sexual tension. Beautiful character growth. Emotional healing and all the VIBES!

Read This Series!!

🙏 Thank you so much, Serena Pier and Grey's Promotion, for the eARC

Going into High Five Novella #6, I was skeptical—mainly because it featured a billionaire’s son and a thirst-trap vampire model on TikTok. But to my surprise, I ended up really enjoying it! And when I reached the last line—“But life with the two of them exceeds all of my fantasies.”—my rating immediately jumped from four stars to five.

I’m so glad to be on Serena’s ARC team for this release. The Halloween theme adds the perfect seasonal touch, and the story delivers on steamy, emotional romance with a refreshing MFM dynamic. Add in a strong girl-boss heroine, thoughtful mental health representation, and inclusive LGBTQIA+ elements, and this novella becomes an absolute must-read.

Disclaimer: I feel like this book should be labeled as MMF instead of MFM given the sexual and emotional connection between the MMCs.

👻 MMF (labeled as MFM)
👻 Masked man content creator
👻 Novella
👻 Billionaire MMC
👻 Sobriety rep
👻 LGBTQ+ rep

I struggled with this one because there were a couple of heavy topics included as themes in this novella that I wish, especially one, would’ve been covered in more detail and not just glazed over. This would’ve been better as a full length book to be able to do justice to these matters.

I was disappointed with the lack of discussion surrounding sobriety between the MMCs given that they used to only hook up when they were under the influence and now the MMC is sober.

Aside from that, I enjoyed the connection between the FMC and the MMCs individually, but not all together.

I did really like the storyline with the Halloween event at the bar, the lengthened timeline, and the involvement from past characters in the novella series!

Thank you to Serena Pier for the arc of Sharing Shadow Secrets.

I was lucky enough to BETA read this book and I was as excited reading it again as an ARC reader. This has to be my favorite novella out of all of them. Taylor has the most relatable personality personally and It was great to be able to get to know Brandon in a different part of his life and see his development as a character. Brandon has to be my favorite MMC in the novellas. He is flirty, respectful and takes care of himself physically and mentally. He sets boundaries and continues his journey of staying in therapy and not being ashamed of it. I love how healthy their relationship starts and continues to be. The story was really good and I enjoyed having all the different characters pop in from other novellas and even from the saga series. I say this in every review for Serena's book but she has a way of writing her spice. She just knows what she is doing when she is writing these scenes. She captures the emotions, the heat of it all and the simple desire between the two characters (or maybe three?) Onto kyle.. A++++ in everything. His personality is amazing and it flows so great with the other two main characters. All three of them together is the ultimate trio that you have been dreaming of.

Book 5 High Five Novella series

What an amazing fun read! Once I started I couldn’t put it down. I love the characters in this series and sharing shadow secrets characters are amazing. I was so happy when they finally got together.

Taylor is a strong independent girl boss trying to start her own business and doesn’t want to jump into a relationship while trying to build the beginnings of her business despite having strong feelings for Brandon.

Brandon is a billionaires son who is also a recovering addict. His character is so in tune with his recovery and he has healthy boundaries it was very refreshing.

Kyle is a famous TikToker/model. He instantly is drawn to Taylor and has history with Brandon.

This gave me all the feels. I enjoyed the development of their relationship and I loved how they supported each other through their individual journeys and as a couple.

Serena Piers writing is heartwarming and funny while giving us that spice we all love.

Sharing Shadow Secrets by Serena Pier was everything I didn’t know I needed in a Halloween romance. This one isn’t just costumes, candy, and steamy parties. It’s about healing, facing shadows, and finding love in places you never expected. The heavier themes of past trauma and sobriety were handled with so much care and respect that I honestly had to pause and sit with it. Serena balanced the rawness with hope, and it hit me right in the chest.

Taylor is every bit the girl boss energy we crave, trying to prove herself in a cutthroat world, and she collides with Brandon, the swoony billionaire’s son who’s complicated, sober, and so beautifully vulnerable. Their connection is fire from the start, but it’s when Kyle, the thirst-trap vampire model, enters the picture that the story really becomes chef’s kiss. Instead of being messy, the throuple dynamic was layered, respectful, and gave equal space to desire, intimacy, and healing.

And the spice? Oh, Serena delivered. Threesome, DVP, bi + pan rep. It was deliciously hot while never losing the emotional grounding of these characters. The relationships felt authentic, full of yearning, care, and that extra dash of "God’s favorite" energy that made me grin like a fool.

This book is fun, steamy, heartfelt, and surprisingly poignant. If you’ve been following the series, you’ll appreciate all the callbacks and cameos that make this feel like a full-circle moment. If you’re new, you can jump in here, but I’d highly recommend catching up first, you’ll thank me later.

Tropes you’ll find:
👻 Halloween vibes
💗 MFM + Why Choose
🔥 Threesome + DVP
💼 Girl Boss energy
🧠 Mental health rep
🌈 LGBTQIA+ rep (bi boyfriend + pan rep)

Thank you so much to Serena Pier for the ARC. I devoured this and loved every messy, tender, spooky, spicy moment. If being “God’s favorite” means getting this story, then bless it, I’ll take it.

**Halloween Fun!**

In the High Five Novella series, the six-book title *Sharing Shadow Secrets* stands out. I really enjoyed this short Halloween-themed novella, which features a throuple. In the story, Brandon and Taylor meet for the first time and decide to take things slow while Taylor focuses on starting her business.

This allows them to get to know each other better and form a deeper connection. Once Taylor reaches her goal, she and Brandon take their relationship to the next level after the Halloween event she is organizing. However, this is also when Taylor meets Kyle, whom she hires to play a vampire for the event. Since Brandon and Kyle have a past together, and it is clear that all three share a strong chemistry, adding Kyle to their relationship feels seamless. Their connection grows stronger as a throuple.

The author does an excellent job with character development and addresses sensitive subjects, highlighting the characters’ emotional healing journeys, which makes them relatable. The story also includes steamy moments between the attractive throuple. I found myself flying through this book in one sitting; I simply couldn’t put it down, and it left me wanting more!

I received a free copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving a review.

First off I want to say thank you to Serena Pier for allowing me to be an ARC reader for her.
I really enjoyed Sharing Shadow Secrets, This was hot and spicy and it had everything that I was expecting.
I loved that it included the couples from the other books in this series. I haven't read all of them yet but I am so excited to. This was one of my first MFM books, and I love how it was done. So hot and spicy. There was also a lot of trauma and hard topics to deal with in this, but Serena did a great job at tackling them and did it with care.
I love how sassy Taylor was, and how head over hills Brandon was for her. He even waited for her, come on!
Then walks in Kyle, and he is such a flirt and come to find out him and Brandon have history as well.
Being God's favorite is something that Taylor has always wanted, and she is so close to having what she craves.
Make sure to check your trigger warnings before reading.
I can't wait to read more of this series and more of Serena's work.

✨ ARC Review ✨

Some secrets burn brighter in the dark.
Some desires don’t whisper—they demand.

Taylor Williams has one goal: escape the job that’s been bleeding her dry and finally claim a future she deserves. What she didn’t plan on was Brandon Dubois—the sober, complicated billionaire’s son who sees her for more than her ambition. Their chemistry isn’t playful—it’s consuming, the kind that scorches through every boundary.

But Halloween brings shadows.
And with them comes Kyle Rathbone—the viral thirst-trap vampire model whose arrival rips open buried desires neither Taylor nor Brandon can ignore. Secrets collide. Sparks ignite. And Taylor finds herself standing in the fire of two men who don’t just want her—they might want each other too.

And then that line—
“You want to be a pillow princess?”
It ruined me. That single moment holds the whole book: raw, filthy, intimate, unforgettable.

Sharing Shadow Secrets is more than just a why-choose romance. It’s angsty, hot, and dripping with Halloween atmosphere, but beneath the heat it carries weight: healing, sobriety, scars from the past, and the brutal, beautiful truth that sometimes being “God’s favorite” means daring to want everything.

By the end, I wasn’t just reading—I was undone. My pulse was chaos, my chest tight, and all I could think was how much I fucking adore Taylor.

🔥 Halloween-themed passion.
🔥 MFM tension sharp enough to cut.
🔥 Mental health, sobriety, and messy, real love.

⭐ 5/5 — This book didn’t just give me a story. It gave me obsession.

Taylor, our determined and ambitious FMC, continues her journey toward independence while building her career, and it’s truly inspiring to follow her growth. Her romance with Brandon—a kind, thoughtful, and genuinely caring man who wants to be more than just a fleeting presence in her life, and yes, happens to be a billionaire’s son—is tender, heartfelt, and full of emotion.

Kyle, the charismatic TikTok model who has a complicated romantic history with Brandon, adds sparks and tension that keep the story dynamic and engaging. The relationships between these three are handled with nuance, balancing desire, vulnerability, and personal growth in a way that feels authentic and deeply satisfying.

I appreciated how Serena Pier wove in important themes like overcoming past trauma, dealing with mental health struggles, and supporting characters through addiction. These elements added depth to the story without making it feel heavy, and they made the characters’ experiences feel authentic and meaningful.

It’s bittersweet to finish this series, but it’s been such a pleasure following these characters and watching their journeys. Thank you, Serena Pier, for the ARC and for delivering a satisfying ending.

ARC REVIEW: 4.75⭐️ rounded up! While I’m sad to see the High Five novella series end, this was a great finale! SSS has definitely made it into my top three of the series. I loved the callback to all of the High Five couples with their updates as well as some shoutout to our SAGA series friends! The spice was great and the chemistry between Taylor, Brandon and Kyle was off the charts. I could not put this book down and finished it in one sitting because it had a nice little buildup and a bit of a slow burn to the action that kept me hooked!

After reading some of the SAGA series and Shamrock Kisses, I was especially excited to get to know Brandon’s character more since he’s made some appearances. I don’t want to spoil anything so I’ll just say that some themes that are in this story can be found similarly in some of the SAGA books (definitely read that series!!) and so I enjoy how Serena has managed to make the two flow together and have another person’s perspective and experiences on some of the similar situations that are faced. Thank you Serena for letting me read this early and congrats on finishing the High Five stories!

Such a fun, quick novella!
Loved the Halloween vibes, the mental health rep, and the MMF/MFM dynamic (It was labeled as MFM, but the 2 guys are also romantically involved). Taylor was such a strong-willed FMC and just an all around fun character. Lots of spice with some heavier moments too!
At the start, the focus is on Taylor and Brandon. There’s definite chemistry and heavy flirting, but since Taylor isn’t ready for a relationship, they agree to stay friends, for now. When Kyle enters the picture, everything shifts, and eventually, all three find their happily ever after together.

What really stood out to me was the healthy representation of consent, reassurance, communication, and respect. It made the romance feel genuine and heartfelt, even with all the steamy moments.

Taylor has all the sass and luckily, Brandon can match her quip for quip. They make a great pairing and are so open and understanding of each other but the angst build when they hold off on getting serious until they have their ducks in a row but by the time that moment arrives Kyle is in the picture and has heat with them both and a history with Brandon.
As much as Brandon is all for Taylor, if he were to share, then Kyle would be the one he shares with. Could the new couple turn into a throuple ...?
I have really enjoyed this series so far and love the fact that the stories have gotten longer each time, too. I certainly don't count this one as a novella, but it's not long and dragged out either. I highly recommend all of these books cos they are super fun reads with sweet stories and all the spice, too.

I had never even heard the term “God’s favorite” until this book and holy cannoli… I loved it. Think why choose mixed with literally anything your heart desires. Like, why choose royalty. Yeah, I was a total goner.
Pier, as always, delivers: luscious scene-building, banter that had me grinning like an idiot, and spice so hot it deserves a Scoville rating. And speaking of spice—it’s a slow burn… until it isn’t. Between the suggestive banter and the jaw-dropping payoffs, let’s just say you’ll need a cold shower and maybe a pint of ice cream to recover.
One of my favorite things is how Pier sneaks in delicious updates on couples we already adore, plus a big nod to a major couple from her SAGA series. Easter eggs are everywhere, and I ate up every second. It felt like a reunion tour—with the promise of something even bigger on the horizon.
The MMCs are absolutely delectable. Brandon already had my attention in the SAGA series, and I was thrilled to see him shine here. He’s been through some sh*t—drugs, trauma, bad relationships—but he’s found the right family and center to keep him grounded. Then there’s Kyle: super-hot social media influencer, openly bi, magnetic as hell. And finally, Taylor—our FMC who doesn’t “date” because she gets bored too easily. This time, she’s found not one, but two absolute unicorns.
This novella runs longer than the others in the series, and honestly, that made it the perfect capstone. Between the check-ins, the HEAs for characters I’ve already fallen head-over-heels for, and the teasing breadcrumbs pointing toward The One (aka the SAGA finale coming next year), this was everything I wanted and more.
Pier keeps raising the bar with every single book, and I’m not kidding when I say I’m counting down the days until The One.
Massive thanks to Serena Pier for the ARC!

This book was given to me as an ARC by the Author Serena Pier, I am grateful for the opportunity to read and review said book. Please note that the review is based off of my own opinions and feelings and should be taken with a grain of salt because your opinions and feelings may be different and that is more than okay!

The books contains many of the beloved characters in the previous 5 Hive Five Novella series SHOUT OUT TO PATRICK MY FAVES!!! Halloween themed and sexy! I am not usually one for certain themes discussed in the book but this was written in a way that didn't feel forced or shoved down your throat. Certain uncomfortable topics were brought the proper attention and all themes are heavily influenced with consent, communication and understanding of ones limits which I found rather nice considering most books will brush past someones background without ever revisiting it or even truly resolving it. Now that being said this book almost had me mad because Taylor and Brandon are the main focus of part 1 and whilst they have a moment of fun and some serious flirting and banter she tells him she isn't ready for a relationship so they part ways as friends however in part 2 Kyle appears and I am happy that my thought of her abandoning Brandon for Kyle was wrong! Instead she herself gets a why choose moment and it's steamy like heller! I do feel like a certain 4 letter word was used much too quickly but I liked that all 3 get to explore their interests with each other and they're more than happy to take it an inch at a time lol. Brandon is sweet and funny and I loved him! Kyle was sassy, flirty and funny I also loved him! Taylor...a lil bit annoying but over all not too shabby. Whilst I did enjoy books 1-3 more this one would be the best out of the final 3 for me. I hope readers will enjoy reading it as much as I did and laugh and get all hot and bothered 😜 .

4.5 stars/🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️
ARC reader for the latest installment in the High Five Novella Series and it did not disappoint!

The FMC has great chemistry with the MMCs and she was full of sass and had electrifying energy! This is a story about facing your past, what you like and living out your fantasy’s/ desires. At a Halloween party, the FMC finds herself between a billionaires son and a thirst trap of a man and fulfilling those desires. There was also some great banter in this books!

Book touched on some heavier topics then what I have read from this author, but I believe she did a good job providing the information and how she approached the topics! I also loved how she sprinkled the characters from the previous novella throughout this book and gave glimpses and updates on their lives!

Thank you to the author Serena and Greys promotions!

“Being God’s favorite. That would be the dream.”

4 ⭐️

Taylor is the hot social media manager for the small town dive bar, High Five.

As she begins planning a Halloween event, she meets Brandon & the two hit it off immediately.

Neither of them are ready for a relationship just yet, but being just friends proves to be very challenging.

Especially when the model you hire to be the party’s vampire is interested in both males & females.

What to expect:
🧛 interconnected novella
💀 Halloween themed romance
🧛 Spice
💀 Multi POV
🧛 Mental health representation

Thoughts:
My favorite parts of these are always the other characters from the past novellas showing up.
