Rate this book
Join author Christopher Long on his journey from mosh pits to missions fields in the pages of his fascinating new book, "SHOUT IT OUT LOUD: Stories of Fast Times and Faith, From the Show Biz Guru."

Remaining true to his colorful reputation, this lively 2014 follow-up to Long's popular 2012 release "C'MON!" delivers the same engaging, conversational style that continues to make his "Show Biz Guru" website a popular Internet destination.

"SHOUT IT OUT LOUD" reunites Long with cartoonist Wendrell Tillett who once again contributes oodles of hilarious illustrations into the mix, making for a reading experience that's both inspirational and entertaining.

Also joining Long's team this time around is Bryan Dumas, the band and music school director at Word of Life Center, located in Shreveport, Louisiana. In 2012, Dumas came on onboard as a content consultant for Long's website. His full-time career in Christian ministry, extensive knowledge of Scriptures, 35-year music industry background and lifelong friendship with Long makes Dumas the ideal co-author for "SHOUT IT OUT LOUD."

In addition to a personal foreword from outspoken Canadian author, Brent Jensen (No Sleep 'Til Sudbury / Leftover People), "SHOUT IT OUT LOUD" also is packed with photos from Long's vast personal collection.

Bear with me here because this next sentence is going to sound rough.

Somewhere along the line, Christopher Long grew up. Allow me to explain.

I first encountered Christopher Long when I read his first book, published in 2010, titled "A Shot of Poison: An Insider's Tales of One of Rock's Most Outrageous Bands", which was a gritty tell-all book about one of my favorite bands, Poison. After reading that book, I was certain he wouldn't get that gig again. He stepped over boundaries that members of a band's entourage are expected to protect and he divulged secret that were never supposed to see the outside of a tour bus.

"A Shot of Poison" was clearly intended to grab attention and make a name for himself. Instead, what it did was burned bridges, cut him off to some degree from his past, and allowed God to work in his heart. From there, he became a faithful believer in Christ, and his 2012 book, "C'MON: My Story of Rock, Ruin and Revelation," tells the story of that change of heart and purpose.

Everyone has a story, and with "C'MON," Long was brave enough to tell his. And with that book, he went from gossiping about others to talking about himself. That shows growth, and growth is good. "C'MON" is important for two reasons. First, it allowed Long to solidify and clarify (to himself and to others) his faith, and it allowed him to share it with others. Secondly, it spoke to new and fledgling Christians (as I was myself at the time), and helped US solidify our faith and in a way, bounce questions off of each other and compare notes (in a "yeah, I've felt like that and asked those questions" kind of way). Because it was Chris's personal story, it was full of first person references. But since it was a biography, and since it was such a personal topic, the words "I" and "me" should be expected, and I can't fault him for that.

But with his new book "Shout it Out Loud: Stories of Fast Times and Faith", Long proves he's not all talk, and he's not all about himself. Not only has he stayed faithful, but he has cleaned the church toilets. He has gone on mission trips to other countries. And while we get these entertaining stories, Long doesn't just tell about his experience. He APPLIES them and the lessons he learned from them. He APPLIES them to situations that you and I face ever day. He takes the experience, finds a Biblical reference (or several), or a story in the Bible, puts them in a blender and APPLIES it to OUR lives. He talks about the lives he and his teams from church have impacted. He talks about how those very same people and events have impacted his life, and he talks about why those events and the lessons learned matter in our lives.

Like I said, Christopher Long has grown up: From self-centered, name-dropping gossiper to self-centered but well-meaning new Christian with a story to tell, to a man on a mission who is able to take a simple event, examine it, and apply what he learns not only to his life, but to ours, as well.

When one hears the word "mission" as related to Christianity, one thinks of taking food and medicine to a foreign country. One would be partially correct. Mission work also can be done in your own back yard, helping an elderly neighbor with a chore, or writing a book sharing your experiences, or sharing your faith as a DJ at a local bar. Christopher Long has done that. This man IS on a mission every single day, and you can read all about it in this book.

I like Christopher, however, this book kind of rambles on without much direction. Yes, he has had had some neat experiences since becoming a Christian, and I am glad they have impacted his life positively, but they are not THAT unique and I found myself losing interest about half-way through. Seems padded, especially with chapters about his youth camp experiences and tales of weddings he "dj-ed". Much of this sounds like a plug/endorsement for his church. (I'm glad he loves his church.)That being said, I still enjoy his honest casual voice. I may not always agree with his take on things, but I believe he is the real deal. His faith in Christ is genuine, and his love for others, true. Be sure to read his previous book C'MON! - My Story of Rock, Ruin and Revelation--a much better read.

This book definitely will make you take a look at yourself and imagine what you could do different in your life to help and guide others. He has taken a very different path because someone was able to show him a positive way through faith and belief. A very uplifting story. I personally have known Chris since I was a very insecure teenager hanging out at a store called The Tape Deck. I was in awe of his knowledge of Rock and Roll icons. Now as an adult and Mother I hope my kids find icons like Chris rather than Rock and Roll icons.
