This was such an unusual book- in a good way. It is refreshing but still uses the best kinds of tropes. I read this book in a day as I got so hooked. If you love dinosaurs, this book is for you. If you don't like dinosaurs, this book is for you. It's a book that anyone can read. I received an advance review copy for free and am leaving this review voluntarily.

The Tyrant King
This was the first book I read where I had the chance to meet the author himself. And my first signed copy of a book.
I don't have the words for how thrilling this book was to read, except for the fact that I wouldn't be writing a review then.
The Tyrant King was a fresh novel after flipping through so many pages filled with dragons... don't get me wrong, I love myself a good dragon book on a rainy day. However, it's nice to take a break from that.
This book got me thinking about how it seems like fantasy, except dinosaurs really existed on this planet. And who knows? Maybe they had a dinosaur named Thadarack, an introverted prince who had to cast away his childhood—like many—to be a leader.
And of course, no good story is complete without a little support from friends to go on a journey to defeat the Carne who threaten Thadarack's kin and home.
The Tyrant King is an incredible novel to read at a cafe to relax.

This is the best dinosaur book I have read in a long time. The map in the front and the basic overview and picture of the dinokin, that were represented in this story, helped a lot with connecting with the characters. This story was easy to read and was riviting until the end, never a dull moment. I can't wait to see the further development of Thadarack. I am excited for the second edition of this universe.

Anthropomorphic dinosaurs. It’s not entirely a new thought, yet it certainly feels like it when you open up Michael Robling’s teen read, “The Tyrant King: The Revenge of the Fallen.” To be sure, the intricate map had me geeking out before I even made it to the prologue. But it was the next few pages that truly let me know I was in a new place now; this author had followed a different path. This is not “Disney-does-dinos,” Land of the Lost, or Dinotopia. This. Is. New.
With illustrations by the talented Liliana Tikage, Mr. Robling’s debut novel invites the reader in, giving us a taste of what’s ahead. It’s a veritable buffet of dinorsaurids arranged into two distinct groups within the well-illustrated Dinotology: the Viridi Tribes and the Carne Tribes.
The Viridi Tribes are the veggie-saurs; the herbivores whose weaponry is defensive in nature. Ranging from the feathered and razor-clawed Scythekin to the armor plated Stegokin, Trikin, and Pachykin. Each tribe is as distinct as their appearances are. The Stegokin are tough and stubborn, following Churchill’s creed of “never surrender, never give up.” The Trikin are stubborn as well and strong-willed, yet self-pleasing by nature. If it doesn’t benefit them, they have no interest. The Pachykin are small, fearless, and resilient.
But probably the most interesting tribe of the Viridi would be the Scythekin. They walk upright with long-clawed “hands” that allow them to be more innovative than the other tribes. They are adept at building, healing, and more. There are other tribes in the Viridi as well, such as the Longnecks. We’ll be meeting them in the following books.
Aside from the Viridian Tribes, there are the Carne Tribes. The carnivores. The meat-eaters. They’ll not only hunt the herbivores for meals, they have no problem eating their own if it suits them. The Carne are made up of tribes such as the Gigakin, largest of the Carne, and the Tarbokin, aggressive and strong. Both have that classic villainous predatory build and attitude, causing devastation wherever they are. The Carnokin are a smaller tribe, but vicious, with irritable tempers. The Allokin are cunning and tenacious, among the most-feared tribes of the Carne.
When Viridi and Carne encountered one another, rivers ran red, fields turned crimson, and families were ripped apart. [pg 19]
Generations ago, the Viridi and the Carne battled in what came to be known as the Great War of Extinction. With great effort and cooperation, the herbivores were able to push all the Carne tribes onto a peninsula with a narrow mountain pass. For a thousand years the carnivores have been held at bay by the Vlax Pass Wall, defended by the Scythekin. This brought a measure of safety to the Viridi, but not necessarily peace as some Viridian tribes continued to hold grudges and fight with each other. As though they had forgotten who the real enemy is.
Readers begin to realize just how dynamic and diverse these saurians are as we are introduced to the ensemble of main characters which includes the Scythekin Prince Thadarack, his good friend Thexis, and Gwon- who is a young Gigakin. Yes. He’s a carnivore living with his father among the Scythekin Tribe, and he’s good friends with the Prince. Can you just feel the politics coming into play already?
It is not possible to overstate how well-written, tightly plotted, and fabulously crafted this novel is. This may be Michael Robling’s debut novel, but it won’t be the last time we hear from him. He’s got much more to tell us about the inhabitants of his special world, Valdere, and I can’t wait. The world-building here is first-rate, inviting readers to become completely immersed in this world where dinosaurs talk, live in tribal villages, and make friends (or enemies).
The characters are incredibly easy to relate to—no easy feat when we’re talking about creatures ranging from a ton or so to more than 16,000 pounds. In no time I found myself understanding Gwon’s plight of being an outsider- maligned and untrusted- although he had virtually no memory of ever living anywhere else. I fretted with Thadarack as he endured his first day of training to be a warrior, having been told just the day before by his parents that at fifteen it was time for him to know the ways of the real world. He’s good-natured, friendly, and loves his parents as well as his tribe; but he’s not ready to be the King.
Every character, every chapter of this amazing story is pure gold. Themes of loyalty, honesty, resilience, diversity, acceptance, and wisdom are interwoven throughout as we watch this young group struggle with events no one was prepared for. Thadarack especially shows his youth as he attempts to make his parents proud but finds that being a Viridi warrior is no easy task. He easily displays his immaturity at how his life is changing drastically. Yet during this time frame we see him grow from an immature Scythekin to one who is preparing to step into the role he was born for.
These characters are not cutsie little critters playing dino-games. This is a gritty, gutsy, and courageous story about innocent beings thrust into a war they are unprepared for. Robling is not afraid to have his readers fall in love with a character in one chapter then write the character’s death scene in the next. It seems counterintuitive, but there’s an interesting sense of authenticity to this saurian land. Can there be higher praise than that?
While written for teens and young adults, this “older” adult was totally absorbed in “The Tyrant King” to the point that I am anxious for the next novel in the series. In the style of such great YA series as The Hunger Games and Divergent, adults will find themselves falling into this original new world as well. I expect big, big things for Michael Robling and his fascinating world.
This is a can’t-miss read for fans of fantasy, dystopian novels, action/adventure, and even sci-fi reads. It may be geared toward teens and young adults, but I urge all readers who enjoy excellent coming-of-age stories with dynamic characters and a sense of realism to dive in as well. You’ll be hearing of these stories again. Soon.

This book truly brought me into a new world with how descriptive this was. The world was built so well. It didnt drag like alot of fantasy books do. It didnt have a slow butn aspect which i loved! Very pleased with this and i would definitely read more from this author.

My oh my. This is certainly a fresh take on hero’s and villains. It took a little time to wrap my head around it, but it’s an intriguing premise. Since it its clearly set up for sequels, I will wait to see what comes next.
