A Kinda Fairytale #7

My UnTrue Love

Rate this book
Unlike most folks in Red River Valley, Pecos Bill has no dreams of becoming a country music singer. He just wants Clementine Miner. The cheerful muse won his heart the instant she smiled at him. Thanks to a curse, coyote-shifters don’t have True Loves, though. Bill knows it would be stealing some other fella’s happily-ever-after to claim her.

Luckily, Bill’s got no issue with stealing.

Or stretching the truth a bit.

Or savagely beating anybody who touches Clem.

In fact, he’s happy to ruin the life of any man who gets between him and his darling Clementine. Especially if that man is Johnny Jacobs, the arrogant singer that Clem’s worked with for years. Bill will do whatever it takes to get rid of Johnny. …Even pretend to be a music star himself.

When I love the books in this series, I seem to love them wholeheartedly and My UnTrue Love is one of my new favorites by this author. This story highlights an obsessive love where the main characters value and hold close the best parts of each other while also repeatedly choosing the other one over and over. But also, make it hilarious and chaotic and the hero slightly villainous but primarily when you mess with the woman he’s chosen. Swoon. This stands alone with no prior books in the series needing to be read and only the barest mentions of a couple of previously built characters/places. I do want to mention that trigger-wise, there are moments of slut shaming, mentions of sexual harassment, brief mentions of sexual assault that are reported, and an attempted one on page that doesn’t get too far. Some violence as well, but those who make bad choices get their comeuppance.

Written in third person, multi-POV (mainly the h and H but another characters gets some chapters too). No ow drama, not really om drama but the h’s childhood best friend and bandmate was her first kiss and even though there’s nothing romantic between them, he feels proprietary over her and doesn’t react well to the H “stealing” her. H seemed experienced but no details were given and he’s only seen the h since he laid eyes on her 10 months prior, working to get her for himself, while the h has no experience other than the previously mentioned kissing.

Some tropes/themes:
☆ Western folk tale/song themed setting/characters
☆ MMC and FMC who would do anything for each other
☆ Theme of choosing and pursuing your love
☆ “My wife”
☆ Both MMC and FMC are looked down upon because of the type of species/magic they have
☆ Slow burn
☆ Laugh out loud moments
☆ Side characters to love
☆ Growth
☆ Quasi-villain minded MMC with a “good” FMC
☆ Bad guy who starts off as a jerk and descends into true villainy

Throughout the other books in the series, the idea of a True Love (fated mate) has been heavily drawn on. Here, Pecos Bill (H) is a guitarist and coyote and coyotes are cursed to not have a True Love. They’re notorious for stealing mates and Bill has a mind to steal Clementine (h). Clem is the muse and co-founder of the band that Bill joined and that Clem's now getting pushed out of. What he somehow glosses over is that Clem wants to be his and ends up plotting how to entice him to be hers. The two of them working for the same purpose but in different ways and across each other was simply hilariously adorable.

Their relationship is the driving force of the book because from it springs the plot lines of Clem working with Bill as his manager and muse to help him become a famous star and the slow decimation of Clem’s friendship with the musician she worked with previously. The side plot lines are strong too with a teenage coyote living next door, Bill’s multiple failed attempts to find a reliable employer, chaos everywhere, and the multitude of ways that Bill has to protect Clem adding to the overall story.

I adored these two and their romance. Bill doesn’t believe he has a heart and is closed off from feeling vulnerable. For all that, he dotes on Clem - he worries over her health, gets upset if someone makes her upset, and he needs her, even if he struggles with it out of fear he'll lose her. Clem is soft and assertive in a loving way, as well as being far more capable than some give her credit for. She tries to inspire Bill to open himself up and see his artistic soul the way that she does (she’s also really concerned about him not damaging his musician's hands lol). Clem also accepts even the darker parts of the coyote she's falling for.

While Clem gives off some naive vibes, she’s lovable and Bill’s always there with his cynicism and ability to indirectly make someone pay for not treating Clem well. He’s far more lovable then he gives himself credit for too. I cannot stress enough that I could have highlighted almost every interaction they had in the book happily. Per the author’s usual style, this isn’t a super smutty book. There are a couple of scenes that are explicit and are excellent. They’re hot and still made me smile because I had the dopiest grin on my face for most of the book with these two.

I also loved the side characters from the teenage coyote, who's had a hard life and I wanted to hug (no worries Clem’s there for him too), to Clem’s brother and his put-upon sighs as he dealt with the chaos as the sheriff, and the various others in this small Western style town. The main villain is awful and the destructive spiral of that plot line was interesting and horrifying. Some other bad guys pop up here and there with one especially getting what he deserved in the best possible way. I almost cheered out loud.

The climax of the book is wonderful and the cherry on top. I do think that when handling the bad guys, they were mostly addressed fairly quickly once the face to face showdown occurred. Given all the hurt that was caused, it felt ever so slightly anti-climactic but if it had been more drawn out, I think the pacing would have been off so it still works. Just don’t expect any great battles. The heart of the romance and the characters with their deep love was ultimately what remained the focus. I teared up in places and the ending is so damn satisfying. The epilogue is two years later and how the author chose to show one last time the depth of devotion between them made me want to turn around and immediately reread the whole thing again.

As always with this author, her writing’s not for everyone. Her characters are kind of zany and there are small errors that stay sprinkled in her books. There can be some repetition too, esp with how long most of her books can be. She’s still a favorite of mine and I highly recommend her books to anyone who’ll listen but especially this one. Bill and Clem are precious.

Spoilers ahead

The bad recognise their true loves immediately
The good recognise their true loves when they sleep with them
But
The coyotes don't get true loves, because of a curse coyotes can only get a mate by stealing someone else's.

Pecos Bill is a wily coyote who saw Clem and immediately wanted her, for 10 months he's plotted how to make her his.Fnally Johnny the leader of the band they're both members of fires Clem.....and thus all Bill's plans come to fruition and ge can finally steal Clem.

Clem is a muse, she's in a band with her best friend until he turns into an idiot and fires her. Now everything's upside down! But Bill stands beside her and offers to be her bestest best friend. Clem has spent months admiring the sexy coyote, now she's decided he'll be her husband and also a super star!

********
I very very rarely get the humour in romance books, especially contemporary romance so generally I skip the rom.coms but you see this book? This book had me screaming with laughter! I absolutely loved the banter, the humour, the wit within these pages.

Bill's been scheming to make Clem his for months, now she's scheming to make him hers..... they're dual stalking/plotting fur each other and they don't know it!!! My gosh it was hilarious.

There were fome pretty serious and intense moments too because the villain is a jealous and bitter man who's seeking revenge. At first I wasn't sure why we had his pov but it actually worked pretty well. I enjoyed knowing his downfall was coming.

Every time Clem defended Bill as artistic and so kind I burst out laughing because he's literally in the background causing mayhem to anyone who so much as looks at his girl cross ways 🤭. And her telling him to look out for his fingers , I finished this last night and I'm already feeling to do a reread 😂

This author doesn't always work for me tbh but when we vibe baby we mesh perfectly 💃🏼I enjoyed every word so much I even read the author note at the end which I don't usually do.

I will say that these books are too long to me,my third in the series I think and asuch as I enjoyed it they're a bit long

All in all a pretty enjoyable read
********

No cheating
Bill has wanted Clem from their first meeting for he hasn't had a woman since
No details on his past
Clem dated Johnny in highschool but they only kissed before they broke up.
OM drama from that jackass Johnny
J/P hero
Violence
Clem is attacked and almost raped.

A new Cassandra Gannon is always cause for celebration, but I must say that I've not really been getting on her with her newest releases.

This is the latest in the A Kinda Fairytale series (three out of seven books of which are 5-star reads for me) but it goes backwards in time and features a whole new set of characters: Pecos Bill, a coyote shifter who's also handy with a guitar, and Clementine Miner, a curvy blonde bombshell of a muse. A literal muse, with magical powers to inspire musicians, and after she's kicked out of the band set up by her former best friend Johnny, she decides that she ought to start turning her attention to Pecos Bill. Since all he wants is her attention, he's just fine with that.

This is another book without focus on the True Love connection that pervaded the earlier books, since coyote shifters don't get True Loves. If I'm going to be totally honest, I think the earlier set up of one Bad character who recognises their True Love and one Good character who doesn't worked a lot better, because otherwise there honestly isn't a huge amount of tension to the relationship. Clementine and Bill want each other, there's no reason for them NOT to have each other... etc. They get together so quickly and sweetly that my motivation to keep reading was kind of torpedoed, since I didn't care about the whole subplot with Bill's abusive father and Johnny's sudden swerve from general arseholeness to straight-up rapist villainy.

Obviously, still an incredibly inventive book, and can't wait for the next Gannon!

4.5 🌟 rounded up by

Siri, play Mastermind by Taylor Swift…

…because that’s exactly what Pecos Bill (H) was. In a real quiet, indirect way, of course.

I must admit I put off reading this because I’m really sick of reading about virginal h’s and experienced H’s. Even though I love this author soo much, she consistently writes this trope and I’m over it. So yeah, I had to be in the right headspace to read this or I knew it would just end up pissing me off. Overall, Gannon managed to redeem herself by making the H utterly obsessed and just downright swoony. She almost always does. But I am low key begging her to write her future books as either dual v or with both mains equally experienced 🙏🏼 I’m not sure I can keep doing the virgin h trope, even for her writing.

Anyways, Clementine (h) is a muse. She’s worked to help inspire her best friend Johnny’s music for a long time, but when he callously fires her, she realises it’s time to start being more assertive. Right alongside her for this ride was Bill (H), who for 10 months has been secretly plotting and putting into action his plan to steal Clem for himself. Bill was utterly obsessed, possessive and devoted. He just adored Clem and would do anything to keep her. Little does he know that Clem has been doing some plotting of her own, and she has her sights set on Bill.

I really loved these two together. Gannon knows how to write a couple with perfect chemistry. I was swooning and laughing and blushing the whole time I read this. It was honestly just a joy. There were some minor things I didn’t like, but not much worth mentioning other than the above.

Other positives were that I adored Luke and the little family they ended up creating, and was entertained by the various side characters popping up throughout. The ending was also very sweet and satisfying.

Safety:
- h is a virgin, H is experienced
- H has been celibate for 10 months since meeting the h
- Not much other history for H, didn’t seem like a manwhore but definitely very experienced 😒
- No ow or *om drama
- *h’s best friend is also her ex but they only kissed and no feelings lingered, the ex wanted her back once he realised she was with Bill but she’s not interested at all
- Triggers may include attempted r*pe, discussion of SA allegations, violence and domestic abuse (not between mains).

This was a true delight! I want my own Bill.

I need to go to sleep otherwise I would write a longer review

The only thing I wasn't a big fan of is Clementine's self-consciousness of her body.

This is completely wonderful and I will try to write a better review tomorrow

☆4 “Clementine and Bill, for all of ever-after.” 💕

This was cute, spicy, and imaginative. I enjoyed both MCs, and there are some wonderful side characters. Pecos Bill was a yummy antihero, a Good-hearted Bad Guy who was so sweetly protective (read: homicidal) when it came to his precious wife. 👏 😂

➳❦ “Nobody in this whole world is allowed to hurt you.” His deep voice was like music, his eyes still electrified with magic. “If they try, you just tell me their name. Okay?” “Okay.” She agreed breathlessly.

Clem was a sweetheart muse who was, yes, at times pretty oblivious and naive. But she also seemed to have a strong grasp of psychology to go with her empathy and psychic connections, so that was cool.

➳❦ “It’s better not to need people.” Bill muttered for absolutely no particular reason, at all. “Then they can’t break you when they leave.”
“What if they don’t leave?”
He lifted one shoulder. “Why would they stay?”

I think faster pacing with a bit less time wading through misunderstandings would have helped the story feel less repetitive, and I didn’t quite understand how she could feel Bill’s mind so deeply in some ways, but have no idea how obsessed with her he was. Sheriff Hank cracked me up—hilarious dynamic with Bill.

➳❦ “It’s a dual-stalking situation. They both think they’re tricking the other into liking them. Scary to consider the level of delusion I’ll be dealing with at every family holiday, from now on.”

I loved the subplot with young Luke, and that the action got faster towards the end. I was a bit surprised that things went quite that dark with Johnny’s character, and I wanted a bit more from the whole mysterious coyote dad storyline. But overall, I did enjoy this imaginative world and might check out others in the series. Such gorgeous covers! 🤩

2. Si no quieres dramas innecesarios (aka ow)

Ah, y no olvidar el found family <3

Cassandra Gannon has done it again.

I am a long time fan of the Kinda Fairytale series. So it will come at no surprise that I had the release date in my calendar ever since I found out about it. AND I absconded from reality and my family to read this the second it came out today. I just can’t get enough of the Kinda Fairytale world and this story hit all the tropes I love without feeling repetitive.

Bill was the sweetest villain you could ever imagine. He channeled Midas (from The Kingpin of Camelot, one of my favourite books ever) in the best ways. And I loved Clem and her attempts to seduce him. I almost wish we could have a little more of their happy ever after.

But I will say… the star of this book really is Luke. And oh how I wish we could have seen him more! I just love the found family trope, and my heart honestly went out to little Luke. I’m so happy he was quasi adopted by Bill and Clem. And please, if I can pray to the goddesses that be (ie Cassandra and Elizabeth) could we have his story??

PS: I shouldn’t forget to say, one of my favourite parts in any book by Cassandra is the author’s note at the end. Here’s to hoping they never stop.

Oh my goodness March can’t come quickly enough. I am so excited.

I used to see a lot of people loving the Camelot book in this series so I tried it….and hated it……because I didn’t know what was happening in that book and was so confused haha. So I dnfed that. I was a bit hesitant to try this one but I’m glad I stuck with it even though I was a bit bored in the beginning.

The book starts off with Johnny the rock star firing his muse (the h). She was his friend since they were young kids and she’s blindsided when he kicks her out. Bill is the coyote shifter who has been plotting and scheming since she hired him to play guitar in johnny’s band and when she gets kicked out, he follows her Jerry McGuire style.

I thought she a bit ditzy and annoying in the beginning and it still continues throughout the book when she’s getting into situations that Bill has to get her out of. Coyotes in this book world are seen as cheats and liars and generally bad people. They are also cursed to not have a soul mate so they tend to steal their mates from their true loves. Bill was the best though. Quiet, thankful, all about Clementine and I loved it.

I loved how the book progressed and how the neighbor next door turns out to be more than he seems. Johnny gets his and the ending is so satisfying when he becomes what Clementine has seen all along.

Loved it! Are there any in the series that you guys would recommend that I read next?

"A lot of our early conversations are lost to me forever, because your smile wiped out my language skills. It took me a while to learn how to deal with it."

Cassandra has the talent to write funny characters that are obsessed with each other while simultaneously being absolutely oblivious to the feelings of the other person.
I love her stories and they always make so happy!

I’d consider this a “slow burn” however they were living together without any action. I think by the 65% mark all they had done was kiss. (I don’t think this is YA either…)

Anyway, I think the H was the most hilarious villain/hero. He was so in love with the h. It was precious. The h was an acquired taste. While I enjoyed her character, she could’ve used some “assertiveness” as she liked to say.

5 ⭐

To be completely honest with everyone, I was extremely hesitant going into this. I had no idea who Pecos Bill was and I’m also not the biggest fan of most western forward books. But boy did this change my mind and make me the biggest fan.

Cassandra Gannon is by far one of my favorite authors, she writes stories that I find interesting from start to finish (most of the time). Even a 500 page novel like this one. Her writing style is so unique but so completely enrapturing that you cannot put the damn book down. Every free moment I had (even my not so free moments) were spent reading this book.

Clementine and Bill are a case of friends-to-lovers that I, for once, didn't mind reading about. Gannon’s choice to detail the past scenes of the two meetings and continue to detail scenes before we meet the characters was a much needed aspect that helped me learn to love the MC’s relationship as it developed. Each of them were insane in their own ways, but their insanity was so perfectly matched.

If you can, I highly recommend reading the author's note at the end, you get so much insight to Gannon’s thought process behind her stories. For me, it makes the characters feel so much more authentic and real when Gannon describes how they have a mind of their own when she writes.

My heart hurts now that I’m finished with the book, but i’m so happy to have read it. Seriously, if someone were to punch me in the face right now I’d still have this goofy smile of happiness on my face. I feel that high that a really good book gives you, a high made even better knowing that I was so apprehensive going into this. I was proven so extremely wrong and I’ve never been more proud of that fact.

It’s actually slightly disturbing how much I would like to see into the Gannon sister’s brains, ugh. A kinda Fairytale has been my absolute favourite series for such a long time, the sheer chaos and unpredictability is absolutely transporting. A joy to read this novel as ever perhaps it’s time for a reread !

“we’re in this together. clementine and bill, for all of ever-after.”

this one hurts, not gonna lie. i was hesitantly excited about my untrue love, as i haven't been loving the recent entries to this series. unfortunately, my untrue love was nowhere near the heights of books one, two, or four.

“a lot of our early conversations are lost to me forever, because your smile wiped out my language skills. it took me a while to learn how to deal with it.”

first, the good. once again, i love the a kinda fairytale world. the little references and easter eggs subtly sprinkled throughout are fun. i also adore the way gannon's heroes are always so obsessed with their leading ladies.

however, that leads me to my main issue of the book. as i said in my review of happily ever witch:

“ i think the story's in this series work best when one character is "bad" and the other is "good." it creates more of a push and pull dynamic. with that missing, happily ever witch felt like it was missing "emotional stakes." like, of course trevelyan and esmeralda are going to end up together… let's not even try and pretend they won't. ”

i also want to expand this stance. i also prefer when one character is chasing the other. or, i would rather one character (or both) slowly come to realize their love for the other character. a big part of why my untrue love did not work for me was due to this lack of tension. bill was obsessed with clem. well, guess what? clem was obsessed with bill … so like, why are we here? where's the story? the stakes felt non-existent and the repetition began to grate.

“coyotes are treated very unfairly in this town. i’m sorry, bill.”
“that’s alright. coyotes don’t need luck to get by. we don’t need anything.”
“because you’re self-sufficient?”
he flashed a strange smile and then went back to scanning the darkness. “because we’re always willing to steal some other bastard’s Good fortune and make it our own.”

i think this story would have worked better for me if bill had actually stolen clem away from her true-love. or if clem had actually been in love with johnny and bill still managed to steal her away. or any version of that.

that being said, when this series is good it is good. i've reread the first, second, and fourth books multiple times. book two is the greatest in the series, with book four not far behind. due to that, i will always check out any new book in this series. here's hoping the next one works out better for me.

Re-read: This was so good. I loved it more than I remember. And if you don’t read her Author’s Notes, she goes into how she wrote the book and her own commentary about the characters and it’s always very fun. I never want this series to end.

——

No one loves these books like me.

That being said, 4.5. I loved the story, it just felt like it was a part of a different series by Gannon. After “Happily Ever Witch,” which was soooo magical (like actual witches), this didn’t feel nearly as fantasy, I guess.

Double edged sword for me. I loved the cute humor and dialogue, where Bill and Clem can have silent conversations just looking at each other and all the good stuff that comes in this book. But I have to say some of it dragged for me and I felt like the story was a little much at times.
But I liked it! Then easy to step away while reading and not come back for a bit.

Anyway- great author and premise.

Highlights & Spoilers:
Clem gets the axe from Johnny-
“Clem, I’m sorry.” Johnny tried. “But I gotta do what’s best for The Yellow Roses. That means you have to go.”
After an uncomfortably long time, Clementine nodded. “Alright.” She said in a distant tone.
Johnny was glad she didn’t create a big scene. She wasn’t very assertive, which was always a nice quality in a girl.

Bill-
“You were his.” Bill watched her without blinking. “He was never yours. You finally see that?”
-----------
But then Johnny went and fired Clem. Made her cry. Cut her out of the band she’d helped to found. Bill didn’t appreciate that.
So now that motherfucker was going to drown with Bill’s boot on his head, holding him beneath the waves. In a quiet, indirect kinda way.

Loved the comments about Bill's wonderfulness thru Clem's innocent filter:
She frowned. “You have a totally empty room in your apartment? Why?”
“Nothin’ to fill it with.” Icy blue eyes gleamed, like his coyote-self was more awake than usual and observing the exchange closely. “Not until you wanted to move in.”
It was a testament to his accommodating nature that he could make her idea seem like his own plan. Bill really was the kindliest man she’d ever met.

Ha!
"Bill wasn’t working on the railroad to just pass the time away."

Clem, lol:
Seducing him was a stellar idea and Clem fully planned to implement it. It would be best to approach their romance in order, though: First love, then marriage, and finally sex. Waiting until their wedding night seemed very sweet, and Bill was a very sweet man.
He would appreciate that kind of gesture.
-----------
Really, now that she’d decided to marry the man, she was getting impatient with his foot-dragging. It had been hours.
Perhaps it was time to nudge him in a less gentle way.

And this gem:
Clem laughed, hanging onto his shoulders while he spun her around. “I hate to ruin this lovely moment, but Ranger’s calling you back for an encore.”
“I don’t give a shit.”
“You might as well enjoy the limelight. After you’re finished becoming famous, we have to go help deal with your father. I just beat him unconscious in the snack room. It’s sure to be a mess.”

I really want to come back to this one, but I have been reading it for a month. Its not a bad story by any means, I'm just a bit bored by it. I do LOVE Bill's character and how he just loves Clem. He really will do anything for her. I think the story is very slow paced, so I found myself constantly putting it down.

But I do want to finish it...eventually.

Let me preface this with saying that A Kinda Fairytale is one of my favourite series of all times, but this book ain’t it. What it does in this series I’ll never know, because it’s no fairytale but a cowboy/country-singer book where not everybody happens to be human.

Where is all the whimsical magic? Flying monkeys? Epic quest? Where is Cinderella with questionable preferences or a gargoyle with Robin Hood as his arch nemesis?

I’m so disappointed in this book for missing everything that makes this series so fun. I went in not expecting much but had some hop that maybe it’s more than it seems, but nope. And the cover features a skinny girl when our heroine is described as chubby, even that went wrong.

Would have been 1 star but I found some things funny enough to highlight so I guess it’s a weak 2.

4 stars, but I loved the main couple's dynamic a lottttt so I'm making it 5. Was not expecting to love this one as much as I did. I haven't read any of the other books in this series, so this was a new world to me. I liked this one so much though that I'm almost afraid to read any others because I'm not sure how they'll stand up to this one. We'll see if I end up reading any of them in the coming days.

“That song is yours now.  Even if it stays unplayed forever, it’s yours.  I think it’s been waiting for you.”

Anyway, this story hit just right for me. More than anything, I'm a character-based reader, and these characters were ALIVE in my mind. The MCs were perfect for each other. I love their contrasts and the way they filled the each other's needs. I also love the found family/adoption/caretaker/whatever you want to call it trope. There was a little of that here, and it made my sappy heart sing.

I usually hate the miscommunication trope, but it was done in a funny way here, and I looooove this couple so much because of it. Admittedly, there was a section in the middle where it went on for too long and started to drag a little, but I zoomed right back into the story when things began to subtly change, showing that each character was clueing into the fact that the other wasn't as far away from them emotionally as they'd thought.

It was a very cute relationship arc to witness. I need more of this in my romances.

The FMC: fiercely loyal, smarter than everyone thinks, doggedly determined when she wants something done, nosey and extroverted enough to get them into trouble here and there, and just completely adorable and fun.

The MMC: stoic, gruff, watchful, morally grey in the best ways, protective, quietly vengeful, will never let a single slight against the FMC stand, completely devoted to her, and absolutely tender with her, has quiet hopes he doesn't dare let himself dream of.

Also did I nearly cry at the end when one character was on their knees at a pivotal moment?! Swoooooon my heart! It was a fun journey getting to that exact moment. 🥹😭

I could go on and on but honestly I'll just let the irony of their mutual scheming speak for itself.

---

Him:
One look at Clem and he’d seen his whole future.
Wherever she was going, he was headed there, too...He’d stolen himself the most complicated, maddening, perfect woman in the world, and he planned to keep her as long as he possibly could.

Her:
All her instincts told her he was supposed to be hers.  She wanted a life and a family with Bill, so she’d figure out a way to make it happen. She was going to chase this cowboy, until she caught him.

---

Him:
But then Johnny went and fired Clem.  Made her cry...Bill didn’t appreciate that.  So now that motherfucker was going to drown with Bill’s boot on his head, holding him beneath the waves. In a quiet, indirect kinda way.

Her:
"That’s why I’m a little dressed up today.  I’m hoping to nudge him into noticing me, in a gentle kinda way.”

--

Him:
Clementine lived with him. Bill had been scheming towards that goal for months.  He’d even made sure his apartment was big enough to share...Clementine had fallen right into his grasp, like a ripe peach from a tree.  Like she somehow thought the whole thing was her own idea.

Her:
Besides, she was going to sleep with Bill.  She was going to use all the muse-y attributes that she’d previously suppressed to entice Bill into her bed, because they were going to be a couple.  She’d decided on Bill, and she’d make their relationship happen.

--

Him:
Bill licked a drop of water from his top lip, his eyes transfixed...Everything about that girl was the prettiest thing in the whole wide world.  Every single bit of her.
“Hang on.”  Bill chased after her, because he’d always chase after her.  She was his future.

Her:
Clementine was the only muse alive who sucked at enticing men.
Bill had not been overcome with desperate love, when she’d shown up at his job in her cutest top and most-expensive sandals.  He’d been way more worried about the blisters on her feet and the sunburn on her neck.

---

Him:
Making sure that his stolen-mate stayed stolen was Bill’s one and only drive.  He planned to show Clementine that he could be reliable and take care of her.

Her:
Of course he could do home maintenance.  He was so proficient in everything.  It was no wonder Clem wanted to have his babies.

---

Him:
Nobody touched his mate. The “stolen” part of the title had faded from his mind, somehow.  Clem was rightfully his.  His mate.  No one else’s.

Her:
Really, now that she’d decided to marry the man, she was getting impatient with his foot-dragging.  It had been hours.  Perhaps it was time to nudge him in a less gentle way.

---

The brothers:

“She thinks she has to ‘entice you’ to notice her.  Like you’re not always watching her, with this crazy, fascinated, lovesick expression.  She doesn’t need to trick her stalker into paying attention.”

“It’s a dual-stalking situation.  They both think they’re tricking the other into liking them.  Scary to consider the level of delusion I’ll be dealing with at every family holiday, from now on.”

I'm starting this review with the background knowledge of having read SIX of the other books in this series, (couldn't make myself get past like 4% of the 6th book so just moved to the 7th), and I think I have been incredibly generous in giving the overall series a 2* rating.

I'm DNFing this book at 61% of the way in (aka 311 pages of 510) which in itself is an absolute farce.

The way I have had to fight for my life to get through the last half of every single one of these books is actually abysmal. The pacing is setting these books up for failure and it is seriously such a let down because they could have been so so good.

The premise of the books are great, the fairytale ideas of Good and Bad are original and the One True Love idea is such a good concept that I don't get why the plot seems to kill itself at around 50% in each book.

I genuinely do not understand why this has happened in every single book and I also cannot for the life of me grasp why nobody has proof read these books and gone "yeah, actually that goes to a pile of shit after 50%, scrap it and think again".

To the author -

Your writing is actually inspired and I do genuinely enjoy the relationships that you write between the love interests as well as the supporting characters.

I also really like the way you tie in each story with glimpses of the characters from the past and future books even when they have completely different storylines.

But for the love of god, SACK YOUR EDITORS AND PROOFREADERS. THEY ARE PRAYING ON YOUR DOWNFALL.

I feel like I have wasted so much of my time trying to force myself to read the last 50% of each book in this series that I begrudge giving more than 1* but the writing is too good not to give 2*.

Just PLEASE sort out the pacing issues within future books because it's seriously killing your writing.

Another banger in the best romance series ever by the best romance author ever!

I'll be honest, I was a little hesitant going into this one; I'm no cowgirl, I don't really like country music or the whole country aesthetic, and Pecos Bill is not exactly a fairy tale/tall tale I'm familiar with... but I still fucking LOVED this book!

Bill has this super sexy vibe going on where he is preternaturally calm, cool, and collected. He is a were-coyote, which I never knew I needed until now, and like any good leading man, he is OBSESSED with the leading lady. It's absolutely adorable how ride or die he is for her IMMEDIATELY. I need these men that Cassandra Gannon writes to become real ASAP.

Clementine is a very fun heroine, especially in contrast to Bill: in every way he is lax, she is extra. Where Bill is chill, she is excited; where Bill is lonesome and brooding, she is extroverted and bubbly. She is a Muse, which is an interesting supernatural being that you never really run into much in these romantasy stories... a perfect fit for an up-and-coming music star like Pecos Bill!

You can tell that Cassandra Gannon has SO MUCH FUN with this silly world she has created in this series. It is such a blast to read these, I literally smile the entire time every time. I hope she makes more and more and more of these books until I die, and then I hope she writes my obituary.

4.5 stars. These books are just plain FUN. More of a standalone than the others, probably because chronologically it's a prequel. (That, and these are mostly all-new characters in this universe.) This book focuses on Pecos Bill, a musician and coyote-shifter, and his laser-focused romance with Clem, a sweetly clueless muse. Less fated-mates energy here than in the other books, but lots of mutual longing and yearning. I actually liked the ambiguity about fated mates, the focus was more on personal choice and it made their overall relationship feel more genuine. (Don't get me wrong, I love a good fated-mates story but sometimes it feels like a shortcut.) Some darker themes in this story so please heed the content warnings if you're so inclined. It's clear that the author is spending more time on proof-reading than she did in her earlier books, and I'm grateful because it's a much smoother and more enjoyable reading experience. :) Hoping there are more books to this series in the future!

What an absolutely creative, refreshing, whimsical, mischievous, heartwarming delight.

The characters were so unique. Pecos Bill and Clementine were perfect compliments to each other, but well-developed in their own right. Taciturn Bill was deeply devoted to her, but never sacrificed his nature. Clementine was enthusiastically supportive of him, but well established in her own sphere of loved ones and friends. They are grumpy/sunshine, but with wonderful little nuances that break convention.

I love how well the author balanced fate and choice without minimizing either.

The magic system was...chaotic. There was a lot going on in the realm of tall tales. Every time I turned the page there was a new magical power, a new species, a new fable to follow. It was a lot. But it was campy and self-aware and that made it more amusing than confusing.

All in all a fantastic read!
