I’ve been in love with her forever. She has no idea.
We’re friends. Best friends, if you ask her. But every time Dot Shaw smiles at me, I wonder how much longer I can play it cool.
There’s just one problem—we’re both holding out. Two virgins. Two disasters at dating. And two people way too good at pretending we don’t want more.
Dot’s different from anyone I’ve ever known. Quiet. Brilliant. Beautiful in ways she’ll never believe. While the rest of the world saw her mom’s fame, I saw the girl hiding behind her books. And I’ve wanted her since the day we met.
Now life’s throwing us together—long nights, too many almosts, and even a road trip that makes it impossible to ignore the truth.
She thinks I’m untouchable. I think she’s unforgettable.
And I’m done pretending.
Because Dot isn’t just my best friend—she’s the only shot that’s ever mattered.
After 26 years in Corporate leadership at a Fortune 500, I discovered people within the organization lacked integrity. I’d always known deep in my soul that I was trying to fit a square peg in to a round hole since I’m the typical creative type. I miss my staff but I don’t miss the corporate world. It’s been said that the Universe will let you know if something isn’t right for you. The first time, it will hit you with a pebble. Then a brick. Then a boulder. Let’s just say that I got flattened. When my fifteen pound toy dog, Nigel, was threatened, I knew it was time to say goodbye. It’s true. Here’s what I found within the first thirty days of being free. Writing stories from my heart that readers love means more to me than working myself in to an early grave for people who only care about their bottom line. My heart has never been more full and my soul has never been more satisfied. I’ve never worked so hard in my life but it doesn’t even feel like work. It’s worth it. All of it. Because it’s about the joy that’s found within the journey. The highs and the lows because I get to write stories for all of you. Thank you from the bottom of my heart for reading, enjoying and recommending the stories that I write. When you share my work with others, nothing is more rewarding. Your word of mouth is my very best friend … that, and your reviews. There is nothing more important to me than all of you. I love to hear from my readers and answer all communications personally. Let me start off by saying this book was not what I expected. The first chapter took my breath away and I was so excited to continue. The second and third? Not so much, but I pushed through. It got better a few chapters in and by then I was hooked again. It was definitely worth the read though!
Dot (25) and Camden (26) met as kids and formed an instant connection that continued on into adulthood. He fell hard, but her? I don't think she genuinely fell for him until towards the end of the book.
The main themes for this novel are death and grief. Dot lost a parent in a tragic way and throughout the book she learns to deal with it with the help of Cam. So yeah, heavy themes for sure. But Cam is oh so supportive and sweet throughout the novel.
Back to what I said earlier though- it's mentioned early on that Cam was in love with her since they were kids. But as for Dot, I feel like she just relied on him after the death of her parent and he was just... there. I genuinely feel like she didn't LOVE him when they got together. They had chemistry, yeah, but there wasn't a deep connection, you know?
Either way, this book had a bit of everything. Comedy, sweet moments, sadness, romance, spice, and cute moments. Colleen Charles is a fantastic author, I've read several of her books. I just wish this one had a tiny tiny TINY bit more romance on Dot's part.
SAFETY: Virgin/celibate/manwhore?: dual virgins OM/OW drama?: no Cheating/sharing? no Triggers: death of a parent via a car accident, burn victim (other parent who survived), grief HEA?: yes!
- Friends to lovers - Always been you (done right) - Hockey romance - Dual v - No owd/omd
This book has all the feelings, I cried so much during h mothers memorial. The book is mostly about h grief after losing mother and her father was badly injured in the car accident, and the H shows up every time. We get to see how much the h means to the h. Honestly, sometimes, I felt the h didn’t deserve the H, bc he loved her so much and had always loved her, but the h just discovered her feelings now, and suddenly she’s always felt that way?
The third act breakup pissed me off, the h pushed the H away bc she had a hard relationship with her mother and didn’t know how to love someone without losing them, so she chose to push him away?
Safety - Dual V - He said he waited but that he isn’t inexperienced and that he has done things?? But at the same time, that he has never taken a woman to bed? What does that mean? And when they are together, he says he hope he doesn’t fumble bc he has never done this before? I will assume all he’s never touched another woman. And the h said she’s never seen or heard him with other women, so my thoughts stands by this. - h had a boyfriend in college, but they never went all the way.
Hate giving DV books low ratings but to put simply: I just didn’t enjoy this.
I also haven’t read another book in the Venom universe so I could possibly be missing out on context, however if I’m to understand correctly the author killed off a character from a previous book (FMC’s mother) which is a huge pet peeve of mine. Another author I really enjoy did this recently and I just can’t understand how you can spend so much time, through multiple books, building a couple’s love story to kill one of them later on… but that is just MY opinion! I know others feel differently, but it’s just how I feel.
Dual pov Dual virgin (he says he’s done ‘stuff’ but no clarification and she had a bf in college so no clue either) Coach’s daughter Death/grief (FMC’s mother) No cheating or OW/OM drama Friends to lovers HEA ending + epilogue

I’ve read the entire Vegas Venom series (OG/parents) and all of the Venom Next Gen books and have always enjoyed Colleen Charles’ books though some I’ve loved more than others. I didn’t want to skip Camden & Dot’s book, and even though the blurb didn’t have me eager to read it I trusted the author and was not disappointed!
So for a book I was somewhat hesitant to read, it ended up being a story that really had some emotional depth and handled some tough topics with grace. The characters are both virgins, neurodivergent and have been close friends since childhood.
The sudden death of Dot’s mom (who was a main character in Sniper #6 in the original series) really hits her hard. She had a challenging relationship with her mom because they were very different and struggled to understand each other. Dot’s subsequent grief and the emotional impact/toll of trying to be there for her dad, Ranger, who was severely injured in the accident has Dot overwhelmed often. For me, the death of Delilah didn’t hit me emotionally until near the end of the book because of Dot grieved, but it wasn’t over the top heart wrenching.
Camden has loved Dot since they were 10 years old and he has waited for her. They are close friends, but he wants more and isn’t confident enough to ask her out on a date. The sudden death of her mom and serious injury to her dad, has Camden stepping up to be there for Dot however she needs him.
Now aside from the emotional portions of this book, the author balanced it with some incredibly hilarious moments. Chapter 9 had me cackling SO hard I nearly choked! OMG…Mira, Dot’s AI assistant-companion-emotional insurance policy, adds a wild and warped level of humor to the story which makes up for the emotional hits. Cam wasn’t sure if Mira was a miracle or a menace. LOL! I love the interactions with Mira, she may be an AI, but she has some terrific comments that scorch poor Camden’s ego.
I loved the pet rescues - Skinbad, Bo, and the surprise addition Soot. Camden was swoony driving his little family home from Reno while they slept snuggled in the backseat. Camden’s comment to Dot while trying to convince her they should be together ‘Then we will do wrong together’ was swoon-inducing.

Wow—what a hockey romance! This story is packed with emotional depth and centers on two people who are truly meant for each other. The way the author portrayed the main characters’ neurodiversities was authentic and added so much richness to the plot. Camden and Dot have been friends for years, sharing a deep connection and understanding. When tragedy strikes with the loss of Dot’s mom and her dad’s serious injuries, their relationship begins to unfold against a backdrop of grief and healing. The journey is layered with emotions—sadness, insecurity, and loss—yet balanced beautifully with humor, tenderness, devotion, and eventually, passion. The friendships woven throughout the story add another dimension, bringing honesty, support, and plenty of banter and antics to lighten the heavier moments. Another standout element? Both characters are virgins—refreshingly different from the usual “bad boy with a playboy past” trope. This book has so many layers, all written with realism that makes you forget it’s fiction. By the time you reach the last page, you’ll feel bittersweet—it’s hard to say goodbye, but what a beautiful ending. If you love heartfelt, authentic romance with depth, humor, and heat, you’ll adore this one.

So far in this series we had mostly light hearted, sometimes a little silly but always beautifully written books full of positive vibes so those where my expectations for the next read ...
Instead there was Slots&Sticks ... Out of nowhere ... Without warning ... Just breaking my heart.
I was not prepared for the beginning of this book. I want to start bawling just thinking about it. So better prepare yourself for true heartbreak.
But don't worry, even though this book will emotionally test you, there is enough lightness and beauty in it to even out the heavy parts.
Camden and Dot are absolutely made for each other. And their journey was beautiful to read.
But to be honest, the whole AI thing? Totally freaked me out. I was waiting for the moment where this book was turning into a horror story: Everybody suppressed or killed by a robot. I could 100% relate to Camdens mixed feelings.
Oh and last but not least two serious questions about chapter 22: Coleen Charles, did you make a deal with a tissue manufacturer? Because that chapter might earn the big bucks with how many tissues will be needed to dry all those tears. AND where do I find the emotional support group for everybody who survived this chapter?
You guys, I can't stress enough that you should stop reading reviews for S&S now, and start reading!
Dot and Camden’s story was heartbreaking. So emotional, and it will destroy you.
“She’s the rhythm underneath every memory.”
From their first meeting, where he’s her silent protector to her pillar of support when her world falls apart, Camden is the ultimate hero. Unrequited love, and holding out for ‘The One’.
“Jesus, Dot… You’re gonna ruin me slow.”
They’re both so precious. I loved the entire group of characters. From grumpy Cash to Knova and Victor, they have the best group of people surrounding them.
“You wreck me. You always have.”
It starts innocently and with a double v-card, it might seem like it will be relatively tame. That’s a nope… Once that door was opened, it was on! The spice was unreal, like they were making up for lost time. Still, very emotional, and my heart hurt so much for Dot. She’s carrying so much trauma. And, poor Cam… he only wants to be there by her side…
This is such an emotional story. Have some tissues handy, because you’ll need them, and then you’ll find yourself laughing in the next chapter…. Thoroughly enjoyed, and I can’t wait to read the next.

I love a good hockey romance and Colleen Charles writes such beautiful ones! I loved Ranger and Delilah in Sniper (OG Vegas Venom) so reading Slots and Sticks was such a punch to the gut. I spent the first half of the book trying to reconcile my image of Delilah from Sniper with the mother that Dot describes and my image of Stella and Anders from Wheeler with the parents Camden described, but Colleen Charles ultimately does not disappoint us and the ending of this book is so worth the read! Dot and Camden, the main characters here, are so sweet and they have such emotional depth and strength that they won me over.
I especially loved Camden's complete devotion to Dot and her wellbeing and their adoption of the dogs is such a funny and touching set of vignettes. There are so many sweet moments in this book - and the spice is first rate as well.
So if you loved the OG Vegas Venom books and can handle some sadness and angst along with your hockey and spice, then reading Camden and Dots story is so worth it!

IF you need a book that combines high emotions, steam, a tender connection, a bit of action, two misunderstood souls, then this is the book for you!!
Dot and Camden have a bond unlike any other, they are both neurodivergent, they have been best friends since childhood, they are both virgins. So, her grieving tour starts, from pet rescues to heavy conversations, to a heartbreaking memorial , he will be there to support her, because he has been in love with her from the moment he met her.
For her, he is her constant, call it love or whatever defines it, she always has known that he is her person. This was an emotional romance that revolves around two childhood friends who become lovers while navigating grief and loss. I love me a boy obsessed and Camden is most definitely that. I liked the slow-burn mutual pining they had going.
This was my first Colleen Charles book and I enjoyed her writing and characters. My attention was captured and held by the sweet, emotional, heartfelt story. I should also mention this book was not all heavy topics, there are many swoony, sweet, light-hearted moments that had me smiling and laughing. That said do be prepared to shed some tears there toward the end...
The chemistry between Dot and Camden was believable and definitely not tame between these two v-card holders. I loved how their relationship was based on such a strong friendship and connection.

Venom Next Gen book 5 can be read as a standalone.
A tissue box required read that manages to hang on to the outlandish humor and pure insanity that makes any Next Gen Vegas Venom story a delight to read while literally ripping your heart out! Sobbing is guaranteed, the quiet I get it moments are simply perfect and make the connection Camden and Dot have shine like a beacon, it gives you a couple so meant to be and so very much each other’s home it hurts, it’s family circling the wagons and standing strong, united, and as whole as they can be after tragedy, it’s memories, it’s the impact people leave behind, the understanding and complete acceptance that comes with someone else opening your eyes, it’s deep and light and fun and moving, and hands down the book in this series that totally rocks you, reminds you why this hockey family means so much and you’ll always come back for more, and is absolutely outstanding.
Camden has known that Dot was his everything from the time that they were children however he was cautious to pursue anything beyond friendship. When she needs someone the most he is determined to be there for her and show her that she can always count on him and that they are destined to be so much more than friends.
With the passing of her mother and the impact it had on her and her family the one thing that Dot is grateful for is the support that Camden gives her. It also forces her to reassess her feelings for Camden and the life they are meant to have which means dealing with her grief and being brave enough to pursue the love she has always wanted.
This story takes you on quite the journey that is at time tumultuous, humorous and romantic but it will definitely make you feel.
This is book 5 of the Venom Next Gen series and one of my favorite books in the series. The story follows Camden and Dot, two characters readers have come to know and love in the pervious stories, and their journey from best friends to more, a move each has wanted to make but was always reluctant to take take at the risk of their friendship. But fate has a way of helping you out and forcing your hand, and these two do not disappoint. Plenty of love, plenty of humor, beautiful support from found family, a little spice, and a perfect HEA for the couple make this a great entry in the series.

A beautiful and emotional story that truly warmed my heart (after breaking it). Dot and Camden are such a perfect pair together. I loved the growth from best friends to more and how they each secretly wanted more for a long time. Ms Charles has a great sense of humour which is shown in each of the Vegas Venom stories but this one also made me cry. Romantic, sweet, swoony and slow-burn steamy with shared firsts, a witty AI, tragedy, supportive found family, a few twists, a road trip, character growth and a rescue pup or three.

I’ve loved this entire series, but this story just hits differently. Camden and Dot’s journey is gentle, kind, and very special. They have loved each other since they were kids. Moments together were saved in their souls. Life threw a few plot twists, and now, all they need is the strength and loyalty only they can give each other. Difficult and cutting life circumstances are handled with grace and respect. There’s plenty of heat and undeniable chemistry, but the story is really about believing in what fate has gifted you, accepting who you are, and finding the most beautiful joy.
This is Book 5 in the Venom Next Gen Series by this author, and can be read as a standalone. It is a heartfelt friends to lovers romance between Camden and Dot. These likeable characters and the unique plot make for an entertaining read. It is a captivating love story with drama and steam, sexual tension and chemistry, secrets and suspense, family dynamic, twists and turns, and engaging secondary characters. An emotional ride.

This couple was meant to be. They are just too shy to be together and are friendzoning eachother. This is due to trauma for sure. I love the drama, the fact they are both virgins, who doesn't love that? I love that Dot relies on Cam but I do feel that for the large part she doesn't acknowledge the fact that he is always there to pick up the pieces. So taking him for granted. But at the end she does fall for him. Could this been a little more romance? Yes in the end I did feel that it would of benefitted if Dot had a little more on that. Doesn't take away I enjoyed this story.
Dot and Camden have been friends for years. Camden has always thought of her as his girl, but have never said anything. The pair become more than friends when her mother dies in a bus accident and father seriously injured trying to get to her. Dot has always had rough relationship with her mother, thinking she was second to her career.
With the upheaval in her life, Camden is there to support her thru it all. This has funny and teary moments.

I absolutely loved Dot and Cam’s story! They have been best friends forever. They also have feelings for each other that the other doesn’t know about. They want to see if they can move their relationship into more. There are some obstacles that come up that will test their love. Will they be able to work through them and move onto their hea? I loved this story! It’s my favorite book of this series! I can’t wait for Bets & Blades! The next book in the Venom Next Gen series!
Dot and Camden have known each other for years and are best friends. With plenty of drama along the way, we see how they progress from friends into lovers in this steamy and heartfelt read. I love the dual virgin aspect, you don't see it much as the guys are often 'well seasoned'. Another fabulous read as always from Ms Charles.

A bittersweet, emotional story that triggers sad, bitter thoughts and memories. For a love story to unfold in these circumstances is hard and painful; one is ready to give all the love and support, but the other wouldn't accept it fully. It sets a mood on a gloomy day.

To brighten the mood, I'm going to read a cozy murder mystery.😁
Wow, this book was an emotional read. Camden and Dot have now each other for years and have always shared a bond. Camden wants more and steps up when Dot faces a great loss. The author gave me wonderful deeply layered story of grief, insecurities, growing feelings with a balance of humor. The tough topics and neurodivergence were handled with beautiful grace. Great addition to this series.

This is probably the best hockey romance I have read in this series!!!
Ms Charles, you’re done it again. This one was so good!!! It’s a fabulous story! Your writing is just phenomenal!! Couldn’t put it down!! Just absolutely loved it. Got nothing more to say but go grab your copy today!! You wont regret it!! Happy reading!!
This is book 5 and another great addition to Charles' Venom Next Gen series. Can be read as a standalone but I love this series as a whole. Our main characters for this book are Dot and Camden and while there is plenty of heartbreak, I love that these two were childhood besties that become more. A beautiful journey full of feels and great sweet romance and steamy chemistry!

This is the fifth story that is part of the next generation of the Vegas Venom hockey series. It can be enjoyed as a stand alone read but has connected characters. The story is about Dot and Camden. This is such a good hockey romance that is sweet, touching, emotional and cute. I so loved the characters and enjoyed the plot tremendously. I especially love how the story develops between the characters. There is some deep subject matter evolving the death of a parent.
This book was amazing. This is the first book by this author that I've read and I'm blown away by it. I went into Slots and Sticks expecting a typical hockey romance. I didn't expect to be torn apart and put back together by the end. What a great surprise at the end of 2025 for me. If this is a book you've, like me, just stumbled upon, don't hesitate. Read it. Sooo good.
This book caught me by surprise and dug at old pains I thought I'd gotten control of. I have a very special place in my heart for the hairless Chinese Crested dogs, having had one myself in the past. They are a special breed. I think you have hit your stride with this story Colleen. The relationship between Camden and Dot is magical. But what a sad, sad story. Poor Ranger 😢
I absolutely loved this book! The main characters are adorable. Neither of them can get out of their own way. I love the addition of the pets. There are highs and lows. I laughed and cried. It was just the right length. I don’t feel like I’m missing out on anything.

I believed in the connection and chemistry between these two, I liked that they had such a strong friendship and I wanted to hug them both a time or two. The story had highs and lows, happiness, sadness, cute moments, sweet moments and passion. The story flowed well and held my attention.
