I picked up this little multi-author anthology “The Other Almanac: Calculated for the Year 2026” because honestly, the cover is breathtaking (like please create a poster version of the cover). This is a collection that combines work from writers, artists and scientists that showcases topics about the environment, recipes, curiosities (perfect for “did you know” trivia lovers), and monthly calendars.
The entire almanac is based solely for New York, which is a must have if you live in that state. As someone who doesn’t live in New York or even in the same time zone, I can’t really apply the things like native plant information, the sunrise/sunset times, zone hardiness, etc. into my daily life. However, integrated in the almanac are short (2-4 page) factual stories, which I found interesting. Who would have believed that there is a species of ant that has only been found in New York? Combine this with some beautiful document design/formatting that puts any designer to shame, and you’ve got yourself a coffee table worthy almanac.

Cute but filled with a lot of forced in political references. Why do we need to talk about RFK Jr in the astrology section? When the author of one article added a random paragraph about them campaigning for Mamdani at the end of a totally unrelated article about cows, it seriously started to feel like virtue signaling. The art is gorgeous and I think the concept is fun but it’s just doesn’t always make sense for any other reason than virtue signaling.
