Potter Hannah Garza never expected to end up destitute and living in her sister’s guest house, but alas, these things happen. In her efforts to rebuild her life up from this very low point, Hannah manages to land herself a job teaching art at Grace Canyon, the prestigious church and school attended by her sister’s children. True, she’s not technically qualified for the position, but God calls the underqualified then equips them, does He not?
This is basically that. So everything is fine.
At least until Hannah meets Luke Abbott, the handsome young pastor of Grace Canyon. Luke is generous and kind and he volunteers his time to coach flag football on the weekends. He’s sweet and funny—and far holier than Hannah could ever dream of being. Yet inexplicably, Luke seems to be interested in her too.
However, Luke agreed to remain single for his first year at the church, which means the two of them can only be friends…for now. But between secrets from both Hannah’s past and present and the growing attraction between them, the friend game they’re playing may end with them both losing their jobs and any hope for a real relationship.
Then again, games for two usually do end with both players losing their hearts.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Luke Abbott & Hannah Garza - Single POV - Workplace romance - Forced proximity - Forbidden romance - Insta-attraction - Friends to lovers - Art teacher FMC & Pastor MMC
✨ a few of my favorite things: - Their flirting - Hannah’s inner monologue, ramblings, and quirks - The sisters 💕💕 - Hannah breaking into song all the time - Their honest communication - The wrestling with how to live like Christ commands us in the book - Scripture references and faith themes throughout - Jill & Hannah’s heart to heart chapter 30 - BROOKE AT KARAOKE 😉🤭 - Chapter 36 🥹 - The EPILOGUE 😭👏🏻
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Book 1 of the Games For Two Series - oh my heart. I died laughing so many times because of Hannah’s odd antics and her daydreams. Her imagination and creativity were so fun to read about and I wish I could be her friend. I really appreciated how the MCs were portrayed in this book. God uses imperfect people all the time. He just asks us to follow his ways and submit to Him. So many of God’s characteristics and fruits of the spirit are all over this book even when many mistakes are made by the MCs. The author was in a tricky position with the MMC being a pastor but I felt she made his character full of good fruits that really reflected seeking and following Jesus.
The love and relationship built by Luke and Hannah is so playful and fun. I’m obsessed with them. Their flirting put a huge smile on my face. Also all the side characters were so full of personality; everyone felt like real people.
This is a closed door Christian romance with no cursing, nondescript kissing, and mild innuendo. There are faith themes throughout and discussions about past sins and struggles.
Songs: We can’t be friends by Ariana Grande Close to you by Kenzie & ASTN I GUESS IM IN by Clinton Kane
This was a forbidden romance with Christian themes. This is my first book by this Author. Luke is a Pastor who signed a contract not to date anyone for a year so he could focus on his ministry work. Hannah accidentally lands a temporary art teacher position and runs into him on the first day there. I really appreciated the faith themes throughout this one and also the careful boundaries they placed on themselves. I laughed a lot during this one. I love Hannah’s personality, she is awkward & funny. Luke wrestled a lot with deciding if he wanted to pursue her. She was very unexpected for him! It was really heart warming to see how much he prayed about their relationship. I really enjoyed this one and can’t wait to read book 2.
Favorite quotes - Luke lets out a very long breath, then takes a step back. “Oh right,” he says ruefully, “that’s why I lose my head around you, because in addition to being so dang beautiful on the outside, you also have the most beautiful heart.”
Luke lets out a low chuckle. “You know I made it through eight months of being single without much of a problem.” He pauses, then looks right at me. “Then I met you.”
Content - No foul language Kissing only No spice Discussions of toxic past relationships
This was a sweet, charming, and genuinely funny story. It’s written with Heather‘s trademark wit and humor, and had so many great one-liners! It was a pleasure to read this gem.
Luke and Hannah are great characters. The romance between them was lovely and the flirting and tension between them was excellent.
Hannah cracked me up with her sunny and quirky personality. She has quite a few awkward moments that made her endearing to me, and I adored Luke because he felt that way about her too.
There’s a strong faith element in the story that will appeal to fans of Christian fiction, but anyone who enjoys a clean, funny, and lighthearted romcom won’t be disappointed by this fabulous story.
I could NOT get enough of this book! Hannah and Luke were a blast to read about.
I grew up in a christian home and was in ministry for a few years, so I was totally sucked in and related a lot to this book.
There were a lot of laugh out moments, I appreciated all the christian theme name drops. Hannah was the cutest and so funny, spunky and full of sunshine. Luke was totally charming!
It was a single POV, Forbidden workplace trope, I loved the sisters' comradery.
I can't recommend this book enough! This was my first book by Heather Miekstyn, and Im a forever fan! This book was given to me by Heather to read and review, and all opinions are my own.
I loved this book. I adored the Christian elements the best and how God was the center of the storyline. Luke and Hannah were the cutest love at first sight I have ever read about. I think I adored how sweet and romantic their story played out. I’m excited to see what Heather is going to do for book 2.
Main Tropes: 🎨 Christian romcom 📚 workplace romance 🎨 artist x pastor 📚 forbidden romance 🎨 prayers and God’s guidance
I definitely recommend this book for anyone looking for a funny Christian based romance.

I can't tell you how many times this book had me laughing out loud. That karaoke scene? Priceless! Super cute romance and a storyline that points people to the love and grace of Jesus. Definitely read it.
“I am going to ask you out, Hannah Garza. I don’t care about your bar-visiting, accidental-thievery, white-lying, Star-Wars-hating ways. I still want to take you out.”
Oh it was so good to read another book by Heather! This story about Hannah and Luke was so charming and I laughed out loud multiple times, which you don’t find me doing much when I read. Hannah said and did awkward things and I related to her so much 😂. I swear as I’ve gotten older I’ve become more awkward. I loved the romance (forbidden romance is one of my favs) and I just really loved the main characters. Some little tidbits that I adored were: Hannah’s relationship with Star Wars, Luke’s nickname, The Office references, and Hannah’s daydreams 😂. This book is available today! Thanks @authorheathermiekstyn for making me laugh, when often times I take life too seriously.

“The Friend Game” by Heather Miekstyn, is a Christian, closed-door romcom, that I loved every second of!
Honestly this book left me speechless and I don’t know if I can fully put into words my love and appreciation for it. Miekstyn really makes you fall in love with these characters and their stories.
I have only ever read one christian romance in the past, and I had a hard time enjoying it, because I felt the faith elements were implemented poorly- HOWEVER Miekstyn did not disappoint! She did a beautiful job of demonstrating the walk of a believer, while still holding true to the romcom essence!
I am typically not the biggest fan of single POV, but Hannah was such a great lead I didn’t mind! She had me laughing, giggling, tearing up, and feeling all the feels alongside her! Watching her growth and further dependence on the Lord was so awesome! And of course I loved Luke- their relationship was so sweet, and his pursuit of her pulled on all the heartstrings.
My absolute favorite part of this story, was the moment where Hannah and Luke had a moment of vulnerability, where they shared confessions and testimonies. This moment had me bawling, in a good way LOL. That moment really sat with me and gave me a new view on what a healthy Christ-centered relationship looks like.
As a hopeless romantic, and a follower of Christ, this book was a perfect read! “The Friend Game” made me fall in love with love and I look forward to reading more of Heather Miekstyn’s books in the future. I hope this one finds its way onto your TBR!
This book exceeded my expectations for a Christian romance. It is fun and flirty with characters who are real and entertaining. I was drawn in by Hannah's humor, which gets increasingly better when she feels nervous or awkward. Which is often.
Honestly, I do not have many words to do this book justice. Luke and Hannah - love them! Sister trio - my fave! Funny and faith-filled - check!
In other words...just read it!
Ps. There are references to Jane Austen AND Lori Wick, meaning it is basically perfect.
*I did receive a complimentary copy of the novel, but was not expected to leave a positive review. These are my honest thoughts regarding this read. <3
You know the kind of book hangover you get… because the love shown between the main characters was just … *swoon* Don’t get me wrong, there was some darn good physical chemistry as well. But the way that Luke and Hannah loved each other like Christ calls us to love each other… Ugh, I need a tissue now.
As stated above, the chemistry was top notch. The banter was amazing. Hannah is relatable. She’s constantly doing the whole open-mouth-insert-foot thing. And Luke just flashes his cerulean eyes at her. And there are kids in the book, and they’re so dang cute!
They built their relationship on the qualities they saw in each other that showed the love of Christ. They both had some “secrets” to deal with, but they forgave. They didn’t judge, or hold those things against each other.
Hannah and Luke might have replaced Cole and Lydia from This Means War as my faves… No, they’re tired for top now.
Amazing job, Heather, and thank you so much for letting me read and review early! Sorry for blowing up your inbox 🤭 I can’t wait to see this one on my shelf!
✅My thoughts: The Friend Game had me reading non-stop! ♥️Hannah and Luke♥️ Perfect in all their imperfections…. The chemistry between them is just beautiful. The flirty banter is hilarious and fun. Will past secrets keep them apart? 🩷Clean Christian Romance 💙Single POV 🤎Forbidden Romance 💛Friends to Lovers Highly recommended for fans of a clean Christian read with delightful humor and sweet, swoon worthy romance. #shortbookthyme @shortbookthyme
Oh my goodness, how I loved this book! Honestly, I have loved every single book that Heather Miekstyn has written, but I have to say she has absolutely found her sweet spot with her Christian romantic comedies. This is only her second Christian romance, but she has once again knocked it out of the park with The Friend Game. Hannah and Luke drew me in right away with their awkward meet cute... one of many moments throughout the story that had me smiling and laughing out loud. They had a great chemistry and flirty banter that I absolutely couldn't get enough of. Their attraction was certainly never in question. The problem? As pastor, he has signed a contract saying he won't date for his first year at the church--- a contract that still has another three months to go. An off-limits romance with a pastor in a Christian book could definitely be difficult to make work, but Heather does it brilliantly. I loved that while both of these characters really strived to live out their faith, they were still human and had their struggles--- yes, even a pastor is human! Sometimes in Christian romances we come across these characters that feel almost too perfect... and it makes them really hard to relate to. That was not the case here. Both Hannah and Luke had regrets from their pasts... and it only made me love them that much more. With strong message of faith, all the romantic tension/pining and a PTA president out to cause trouble (not to mention some other quirky side characters), there was so much to love in this story. It took me on a roller coaster of emotions, and I was absolutely here for all of it.
The Friend Game is a closed-door Christian romance with kisses only. There is a slight bit of innuendo, but it was definitely more of the humorous nature than suggestive.
**ARC received for consideration. All opinions are my own.
The Friend Game was such an enjoyable read from the characters to the setting, this one was perfect for a Christian romance! Our main characters Hannah and Luke was so admirable and I just absolutely adored them and their journey. From their “meet cute” when she has one eye’s worth of eyeshadow on doing the robot🙈, to the stellar epilogue (no spoilers here), they were SO great together and made for one another from the start.
I loved Hannah and witnessing her growth on her own personal journey in life, surrounded by family, personal passions and decisions, faith, and workplace plans that she ultimately lets God lead. Hannah was quite the relatable character for me personally because I’m an artistic being as well as her; artistry and Christianity mixed into one basically defines who I am as a woman of Christ and I loved this aspect of the story!
And Luke? Don’t get me started - he was the perfect guy! So sweet and thoughtful, and I loved reading a story with the MMC being a young pastor. I also enjoyed the supporting characters of Hannah’s sisters and the scheming elderly ladies Belinda and Etta - who doesn’t love the premise of that?!
Altogether, this was an amazing read and it really shined some light on what it means to truly follow God’s plans and to just let go and let Him take control! I loved this so much📖🩷
- Wow! This sweet and humorous romcom blew me away! The Friend Game is beautifully written, sweet faith theme throughout the story, and both characters were so raw and real in their faith. I love love loved the dialogue between Luke and Hannah and Hannah has such a funny and frenzied personality she cracked me up throughout the whole book! Her inner monologue was THE BEST!
I loved the fact that the setting centered on a Christian school, I found that so unique! It’s not often that I read single POVs and I really enjoyed this one! This is a five star read for me and I’m so pumped for the next Garza sister’s story, Brooke!
This book was an absolute delight, so genuinely funny and heartwarming. Hannah was just such a beautiful character. I feel like she is my friend now. Both her and Luke are trying to honour God in the circumstances but are also very human and I hadn't seen this kind of scenario explored much in books before.
Things I loved
Christian values
Relatable goofiness
Laugh out loud humour
Strong friends and family
Careful physical boundaries
Very much looking forward for Will and Brooke's story which I think is coming next.
Make space in your TBRs for the Friend Game! When artist Heather Garza finds herself jobless and living in her sister’s house’s back unit, a series of misunderstandings leads her to a new job as the art teacher at Grace Canyon. When she meets Pastor Luke Abbott, their near-instant attraction has to be put on the back burner while he finishes out his year’s contract which included a promise not to date. So-friends it is. This book was so FUNNY!! I found myself smiling and giggling time and time again. Despite a constant series of embarrassing mishaps in their first few meetings, Luke is still interested in Hannah and makes it clear that he plans to pursue her as soon as as he is free to do so. (His blatant admiration of her and commitment to pursue as soon as he was able was peak book and irl boyfriend material). Throughout so much of this book I kept thinking “but this really is exactly what Christian and church dating culture is like” - Miekstyn captures it perfectly! I so appreciate how intently she interwove faith and Christian living into the storyline, and how important it was to the characters to honor God, each other, and their community. The conflict did feel maybe a little overwrought at times near the end but also the politics at small Christian schools can lead to some ridiculous debates so it probably wasn’t even that unrealistic. Miekstyn’s books really remind me of Erynn Mangum’s stories: characters seriously committed to God and a concern of how He wants them to live their lives. Heather and Luke and the supporting cast of characters feel like people I would actually meet in real life.
*I received an advance copy of this book. I was no required to give a review and all opinions expressed above are my own.
Okay this was so cute. It was immediately relatable. As a mom, I knew immediately which Clifford book they were referring to and it made me smile. But the train of thought of Hannah was so my brain—the bouncing back and forth from being confused and making assumptions about Luke when she met him was so realistic. And the just accidentally walking into a job thing was so her and so funny; she immediately felt like a best friend as I barely started the book. Hannah’s word vomit, ahh—SO relatable! And funny! This book is hilarious. Also, my goodness. A Christian rom com that is fun and funny and cute and has good banter and romance and isn’t overly cheesy. I don’t think I’ve ever found a book like this but it’s exactly what I want in a book. Just normal Christians falling in love, keeping that as an integral part of who they are but still letting the book be about the romance. Christian themes and stuff coming into play in the romance like letting things come to light and forgiveness and such but without making that the entire plot. Like the chill, slipped in references like when her phone rings and saves her “like manna from heaven.” Her inter monologue is completely the way my brain thinks. I love that it’s authentic Christianity without the hyper-religious/afraid-to-mention-butts type of thing i typically find in Christian romance books. (Ie: she thinks my preaching’s sexy.) The chemistry! The banter! Amazing! My husband called me out multiple times for smiling to myself during my reading. I read it in a day and that’s with mother obligations to kids and such and longing to pick it back up. I can’t hype this book up enough and now I’m downloading the others because the world needs more books like this and i definitely do
This was such a hilarious read. Hannah is a vibe! Just like a freight train that once started, keeps going. Get a nervous Hannah and you get a truckload of laughter. It was beautiful the way she kept being herself even during difficult situations although one sometimes felt like berating her for being so hard on herself. However, this offshoot from her past gradually comes to a halt as she finally realises that true love means acceptance and respect. The connection between her and Luke from day one is heartwarming. Her beautiful spirit endears everyone and it's no wonder that Luke gradually falls in love. Two very different personalities falling in love!
The catch: the agreement he signed as a pastor for his first year pastoring a church so they can only be friends for now. How they handled it, the emotional upheaval, the secrets and the relationship with other characters brings about a unique story. I enjoyed the way the author weaves faith, hope and love as Hannah and Luke determine to walk in line with God's leading and instructions. I love the fact that the author didn't paint them as perfect but as humans with real emotions prone to mistakes and desires. Throughout the story, you see the inherent desire and commitment to follow God's way. A beautiful story of love, trust and commitment to doing the right thing according to God's Will.
I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
Hannah Garza is broke, jobless, and living in her sister’s guest house when she lands an art teacher job at Grace Canyon—despite being wildly underqualified. Enter Luke Abbott, the charming pastor committed to a year of singleness, yet undeniably drawn to her. With past struggles and undeniable chemistry, staying just friends may be impossible.
Here are my highlights:
📖 Faith, flaws, and fresh starts - Hannah’s struggles feel incredibly real—figuring out her career, feeling lost, and trying to trust God's plan.
💖 Sisterhood goals - The sibling dynamic is pure gold, filled with warmth, banter, and relatability—especially if you’ve got sisters of your own!
🔥 Undeniable chemistry - From their uncanny meetings to Hannah’s adorably awkward rambling, every moment with Luke is swoon-worthy.
My thoughts? This book is heartfelt, funny, and full of faith—perfect for anyone who loves sweet, slow-burn romance with spiritual depth.
💕 The Swoon Scale 💕 (This is how I rate my books. For more information, see my pinned post.)
This book pulled me and took me on a fantastic ride. I loved the fun, the flirty, and the faith.
Hannah is in between jobs when she accidentally finds herself the art substitute teacher at her niece’s school. She finds that she loves this job, being creative again, and flirting with the handsome man in the hall. The handsome man turns out to be Pastor Luke, single and off limits. Can they remain friends or will the growing attraction get in the way?
Highlights: All the karaoke!! Hannah’s daydreams 😂 The Harvest fest (or really any time Hannah and Luke try to act like they don’t like each other)
I love Hannah for her creativity and how she helps others find their creative voice. I love her compassion and willingness to help those who need it.
I love Luke for his great sense of humor and love of history. I love his desire to do the right thing.
“He is a pastor after all. They probably do dating a little differently. They probably call it courtship for one. And they probably require that you be proficient at needlework, the piano forte, and, and...letter writing. Although I might be confusing pastor’s wives with the heroines in Jane Austen books.”
I loved this Christian RomCom so much! It was hilarious and an easy read. Heather did a fantastic job of writing a story with faith and seeking the Lord. The Friend Game is full of relatable character that have flaws but are real in how they turn to God. They are not perfect but have realistic struggles and desire walk with the Lord. Hannah was hilarious and I could relate to her on so many levels. I loved her character growth. Also, I loved Luke! He was kind and sought the Lord in everything. They had perfect chemistry and so many sweet swoony moments. All the side characters were a hoot! Especially Belinda! who doesn’t love a romance reading and meddling matchmaker! Highly recommend this story if you love Christian romances and book tropes of forbidden romance and friends to lovers! I cannot wait to read Heather’s next book in this series!
I volunteered to read an ARC copy of the book and all thoughts are my own.
This is my very first novel by this author, who I’m blessed to call a sweet friend of mine, and it did not disappoint. We need more Christian Romantic Comedy out there in the bookish world and she is delivering! I plan to buy all the physical copies of her beautiful books soon because I need them on my shelf! Until then, you can find me bingeing them on KU.
I really enjoyed Hannah’s character so much. She is hilarious, driven, awkward, but super fun. Luke was the dreamiest and when he prayed for Hannah, talk about making me swoon. Of course I rooted them on the whole time and enjoyed this Christian perspective of a forbidden romance.
Easily a 5 stars read for me! You might enjoy this book too if you like:
💐 Friends To Lovers 💐 Forced Proximity 💐 Forbidden Romance 💐 Faith Elements 💐 Clean Romance 💐 work place
Y’all, this is a super sweet and fun Christian romcom. It is the first in author Heather Miekstyn’s new series, Games For Two. (I’m hoping sister Brooke is next!)
Read this is if you love: ✝️ Christian romance with real faith elements 🎨 Instant attraction 🏈 Forbidden romance where they have to fight their feelings 💕 Strong family relationships 📖 Fun movie and book references 🥴 If secondhand embarrassment doesn’t bother you
I really enjoyed how Hannah and Luke kept pointing each other to Jesus. Hannah has a lot of cringe-worthy moments, but her heart is so sweet and pure. There’s strong themes of redemption and walking with Jesus after mistakes. It’s beautiful. 💕
What a great book. I don’t normally give 5 stars but this one surprised me so much that I had to do it. This is my first book by this author and it won’t be my last. I almost quit reading this book. The first two chapters had lies and deception and I just wasn’t sure if I could wade my way through it. But once I understood how Hannah lets her imagination run away from her, I loved her internal conversations. The support characters are great and Luke is the perfect male lead. Lots of laughs, just enough tears, and a great Christian message.
Fantastic Christian romance! I love everything about it. It was a little crazy starting out considering that as I started reading this book my dad had a stroke and was in the hospital. I thought I wasn’t going to be able to keep reading but thankfully that is not what the book was about. Other crazy stuff is that I was an elementary school teacher and I am married to a pastor named Luke😂 I loved the growing relationship that Luke and Hannah had! There was a perfect amount of spice and I can’t wait to see what the other books in the series are like!
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
I don’t remember the last time a book moved me to actual real-life tears, but this book did it. Wow. But the resolution was so worth it. I can’t believe I hadn’t read this author before this month. I stumbled upon book three in this series and loved it so much I came back to read book one. For inspirational Christian romance, this author at the top. So many good, faith filled reminders, sprinkled throughout an incredibly engaging story. Now I need to go read book #2!
THE FRIEND GAME BOOK REVIEW 🖌️🩷 this is my second ever arc and WOW was it a good one! i’ve got to say, i was EATING up the pastor trope bc men who love jesus are walking green flags 💚 also there were so many amazing references to books and movies that i mostly understood so theres that 😂 . FMC: Hannah. WOW. she is a character. she has gone through a lot of jobs and yet she still is determined to be employed. needless to say she had determination like none other 👑 she also has a habit of embarrassing herself, which is cute but makes the second- hand embarrassment that much worse 🫣 (see emoji rating lol) there are a lot of times when she goes on a ramble or does something awkward but Luke thinks it’s cute which just shows what a green flag he is 💕 ps- the harry potter reference is crazy, tell me when you see it 😂 . MMC: Luke freaking Abbott. this man is a green forest (or green tablecloth as my sister would put it) 💚 he’s a pastor for their church so he loves jesus and he makes bible references all the time which is just so hot 🫠 but he also teaches a kids soccer class and helps with various services around the school and around town. which is reallllyyyyyy hot in my opinion 🤭 he’s just so sweet to everyone but he’s also honest and tries his best to be clean before God. and he says rlly good prayers 😩 he also treats hannah like a queen and respects and loves her which is AMAZING anyway he and hannah are just made for each other 💕 . guys this book is amazing. there were a lot of times where i had to set it down bc the second-hand embarrassment was too much 😂 but that means it’s a good book 🤭 also there are so many funny parts but also sweet parts and i almost cried at the end hahaha 🥹 ANYWAY i loved this book so so much! 💕
Heather has a way of making you smile, sigh, laugh out loud, and want to be friends with all of her characters.
Most importantly, her genuine characters are never too-good-to-be-true… they’re just like you and me… broken but part of a redemptive love story because of the One who loved first.
Here’s to believing that you are worthy of love and that He is giving you the desires of your heart.
