Xarparion is no more; most of the hallowed towers of the mage academy are lifeless and broken. Alex, Maya, Nia - the pixie, and Rosa are all that remain to lead the shattered survivors through the undead-controlled wilderness in search of a new home.
They need food, shelter, and safety in a world where the lich’s minions far outnumber the living. And every day the need to find answers grows. Who are Alex’s mysterious parents? Is there any way to make a stand against the undead horde or is all life on the planet doomed? More importantly, is it simple destiny guiding Alex and his small band of friends or something bigger, many millennia in the making? All this, while dealing with the horrors and wonders of their new lives, new adventures, new friends, and powerful enemies.
At the end, the only real truth everyone can agree on is…no one said being a hero was easy!
Pitiful. I read this in the hope that it would improve from the first, but it doesn't, it gets worse. It reads like it was written 200 years ago. The hero is absolutely perfect in everything he does. As I read this book I grew to hate Alex both for his perfection and his patronizing attitude to all the other characters. The are female characters with lots of potential but they are all reduced to 'squealing' or 'giggling' like women in a Victorian novel, while Alex smiles condescendingly. If the author killed off Alex and advanced his other characters from Kindergarten age if might be worth reading. Recommended for lovers of 19th century literature.
If the author removed half of the paragraphs talking about people crying for joy, bouncing between highly emotional states, and removed half of the paragraphs where people eat meals to celebrate or grieve - then the entire set of 4 books would have easily fit into a single book.
Should be 4 stars but ended up 3 because of the cliffhanger. If your book is good and you don't take years for the next volume, there is never a need to end a book like this
The previous book was better. There were some great scenes in the book that were enjoyable but others that were just a bit to simplistic. There are also scenes that were setup from the last book or even within the present book that could have been developed further and perhaps used to allow for the last setting in the dark elves city to have been held off to another book. I would have preferred that there was more story elements in getting off the mountain. Perhaps there could have been some interaction with the Fairy city and then disaster after crossing the river that they couldn't get back to the city before it perished. Then additional conflict in trying to reach the fort. Then more efforts to get into the fort. I could go on but it seems so many opportunities to expand the plot was missed and I would have loved to seen those explored. Perhaps we will see it in the next book but......
fairly similar to the first book in quality even less use of the core idea than the first book. the story this time is more about them escaping the school and setting up their own place with the assistance of Alex's space dad and space mom. Again not much in the way of opposition the heroes win most fights easily. The story has a lot of deus ex machina but basically owns it by saying space dad arranged things that way. the wizard school gets dropped all that setup was essentially for nothing. this book was a lot more generic fantasy without much in the way of new ideas which probably puts it a step down firm the first book.
I was happy to read the adventures of Alex&co. Well, I know the story is kinda linear (that's why it's not 5 stars). But the author know how to get us hooked and always wondering what he'll do to make a situation or event special. I love that series and will continue to follox it, even if the cliffhangers almost kill me !
