Essence of Foul Play

Rate this book
Emma Brennan may have her head in a cloud of eucalyptus, but her feet are firmly planted on the ground in breathtaking Carmel, California, as she prepares to open her new spa business, Aroma Wellness. But all the reiki, shiatsu, and massage in the world can’t help her relax when she’s accused of murder . . .

Everything is going smoothly as Emma prepares for the grand opening of the spa. The therapy rooms are painted. The sales shop and café are stocked with meditative and delicious goodies, from essential oils to avocado masks and prickly pear massages. The fountain in the Courtyard of Peace is burbling with good vibrations. In fact, there isn’t a whiff of trouble until that morning when Emma is shocked to learn that a rival spa owner has been bludgeoned . . . with an item from the goodwill basket Emma gave her. Worse, a witness is pointing the finger at Emma . . .

With the police treating Emma like she’s the only suspect, and the town’s anti New Age anything posse badmouthing her every step of the way, she’s left with no choice but to conduct her own investigation. Incensed by the accusations but empowered by her cousin, her nana, and her trusted Birman cat, Vivi, Emma reviews the potpourri of possible suspects, determined to uncover the essence of foul play—before she’s cold-pressed for murder . . .

Imagine my surprise when I discovered that this new series shares several characters in common with the Fairy Garden Mysteries also written by Daryl Wood Geber? I liked the intros and how the story took off with a whole new set of folks but also the same detective. Great idea - brings in new readers from different angles. I learned more about aromatherapy. I got to know fairies from a different perspective. Mystery was solid. I only want to know why 1 character up and disappeared. I liked them! I wonder whether that will be part of book 2!

This was a good start to a new series. I like that it tied into the Fairy Garden Mystery series and while this one had a lot of potential I found myself a little disappointed it wasn’t in the Fairy Garden series as I think I like Courtney a little more as an amateur sleuth. In this one Emma is starting a business using alternative therapies and massage. Despite some people being not supportive she is excited and off to a good start until her friend is killed and she is the police’s number one suspect. I liked that her grandmother talked about and saw fairies and we saw some friends from the other series. There were a lot of suspects in this one and it was a little hard to follow at times. Overall I think this set up for a good new series and I am excited to see where it goes. The mystery was good and I liked the resolution overall.

An entertaining debut cozy with a lovely beach setting. Emma Brennan has opened the Aroma Wellness Spa, Cafe, and Gift Shop with Sierra Reade, her cousin, who is the Chef. Both are close to their Nana, Lissa Reade; the town librarian. Within a couple of pages read, I felt that this story had good vibes and would be enjoyable.

Willow Shafer is Emma's frenemy; owner of another local spa. She’s very unhappy that Emma has opened one, also. Emma has to deal with Willow’s negativity; plus, Emma’s mother, Kate is very critical of her plans. The Aroma Wellness Spa helps Emma focus and be as positive as she can around them. The spa has a wonderful team of employees, and business is booming.

There is constant action in this plot, and many suspects who could be the murderer. I kept guessing and guessing about who it could be! The characters are an eclectic group.

Courtney Kelly, the protagonist from Author Gerber’s ‘Fairy Garden Mysteries’ makes appearances. Nana Lissa keeps telling Emma she will see and meet her fairy soon. Emma has a gorgeous Birman cat, Vivi, who sees fairies and plays with them!

The story is creative and I feel like readers will enjoy it. The author provides delicious recipes for readers.

I honestly read and reviewed a digital ARC provided by NetGalley and Kensington Publishing. All opinions are my own.

Essence of Foul Play is the first in a delightful new cozy mystery series, and what a fun read it was! In this first installment, protagonist Emma Brennan is opening a new spa, Aroma Wellness, in the picturesque town of Carmel-by-the-Sea, California. When a friend and fellow spa owner is found murdered, Emma finds herself a suspect, and steps in to clear her name and find out who's really guilty of foul play. With a cast of diverse, likable characters, a well-plotted mystery with plenty of red herrings, an adorable Birman cat, and a unique setting, I was thoroughly engaged from start to finish. With fun tidbits about crystals, spa treatments, and delicious recipes sprinkled in, this book is the recipe of a winner! Looking forward to reading the next in this wonderful series.

Many thanks to Daryl Wood Gerber, NetGalley, and the publisher for allowing me to read an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts are my own.

This was a good first entry to the series. It’s always fun going to the setting of another series and having new characters be the stars. This did make me want to get back to the fairy garden series. Emma is a good main character and I hope Aroma Wellness is a success and we have many more books to look forward to. The mystery was well done and the ending was exciting.

What an interesting start to a new series. This is definitely a different cozy. I really enjoyed the setup in Carmel, California. It is a beautiful place to visit, in real life, and in this book and makes a great backdrop for the spa, Aroma Wellness, that Emma is opening. With her cousin Sierra running the cafe and her friend Yoly running the gift shop there are many, many characters in this book which can be a little confusing, happily the author has a list of all the characters in the book and their roles in the beginning of the book. With many shops and shop owners and many relatives, the cast is large. I really enjoyed learning about different spas and different offerings that were new to me. All that being said, I did find the mystery a little scattered. Maybe it was too many characters and so much backstory, but I felt the mystery was a tad loss, Emma just has so much going on her attention is going everywhere and not really focused on the mystery. I really enjoyed the setup and characters, and I see how many mysteries could take place in this setting. I will definitely look forward to more in this series, I think next time the mystery could be more center stage. Thank you to #Netgally, #KensingtonCozies, and the author for an opportunity to read! #EssenceofFoulPlay #DarylWoodGerber #AnAromaWellnessMystery #bookreview #bookideas #retiredreader

Dollycas’s Thoughts

It’s almost time for the grand opening of Aroma Wellness, a dream Emma Brennan has worked hard to fulfill. Employees have been hired, shelves are stocked, therapy rooms are all equipped, the cafe is ready to serve up healthy meals, and the Courtyard of Peace has a fountain that is sure to lighten any weight you are carrying.

Emma knows there are objections from people she may be competing with, but she hopes that they will all see the differences and that there are plenty of customers for everyone.

Then one of those competitors is killed, beaten with an item from a basket Emma gave her to ease tensions. The woman was fine when Emma left, but she soon found herself at the top of the suspect list. With the murder weapon tied to Emma, a witness making accusations, and others who are not fans of the New Age sensation, Emma is going to have to find the real murderer herself. With a little help from her nana, her cousin, her Birman cat, Vivi, and from a surprising source, she hopes it doesn’t take long to get to the “essence of foul play” and get back to living her dream.

This series is a spinoff of the author’s Fairy Garden Mysteries, a series I have gotten behind on, but that did not hinder my enjoyment of this story one bit. The author starts the book with the cast of characters to help readers get to know the humans, animals, and fairies.

I enjoyed meeting Emma Brennan. She has a positive drive about her life and her business, and a genuine need to help people however she can. Her interactions with everyone she meets felt sincere. There is a large cast of unique, diverse, and memorable characters. I found it very easy to get invested in Emma and all the others. They were well introduced or reintroduced and continued to grow and hold my interest from the beginning of the story until the final page.

Emma took Willow’s death hard and not just because she was the top murder suspect. They were friends, not as close as some people thought, but she still felt the pressure to get justice for the rival spa owner. There were plenty of suspects and several clues to work through. The killer wants Emma to back off and clearly makes their wishes known, but that just strengthens Emma’s resolve. The story had a great twist that came out in a suspenseful reveal that tugged my emotions in different directions.

The author’s descriptive writing style brings Carmel-by-the-Sea, California, to life along with Emma’s spa, home, and even the beach. I could easily envision every place vividly.

Essence of Foul Play is a delightful companion to the Fairy Garden Mysteries. I feel we have barely scratched the surface of Emma Brennan’s life, past and future, so I am intrigued to see what the author has in store for her as the series continues.

Be sure to check out the recipes in the back of the book. Everything from an Avocado Face Mask to Lemon Butter Cookies and more are very tempting.

I voluntarily reviewed an Advance Reader Copy. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review. Thank you to Kensington Cozies and NetGalley for providing me with an ARC.

Emma has everything on track to open her new spa… until the owner of a rival spa is found dead, and Emma becomes the primary suspect. As if that’s not enough, there’s a contingent in town who wants to shut down all the “woo-woo” New Age businesses. In order to keep her spa open, Emma must deal with the protesters while also clearing her name.

I have read and enjoyed several other series by this author and high hopes for this book. Fortunately, I was not disappointed. I like Emma, the MC, and adore Lissa, her grandmother. There were cameos by several characters from Gerber’s Fairy Garden series, including the detective investigating the murder. It was fun to visit with familiar characters as well as meeting new ones.

We didn’t know much about the murder victim except that she didn’t like the opening of another spa in town, which made it hard to create an initial list of suspects. As the story progressed, though, the list grew – and then shrank again as names were crossed off in the course of the investigation. Although the actual culprit was on my list, they weren’t at the top until just before it was revealed in the book, and the motive made sense for that character.

If, as I suspect, this is the first book of a new series, I look forward to returning to Carmel for another visit with Shelby, Nissa and the rest.

Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for the opportunity to read and review this book.

In the beautiful seaside town of Carmel, California, Emma Brennan is opening her first small business. Aroma Wellness offers all kinds of natural therapies, treatments, and advice, as well as having a small café and gift shop, and she knows she's found her happy place. When a fellow spa owner is murdered Emma is placed on the suspect list and knows she has to work hard to clear her name. With the help of her Nana Lissa and the library fairy, she begins her own investigation much to the disapproval of the local police detective.

Book one in Daryl Wood Gerber's second series set in Carmel, California, with the addition of a little fairy dust and a cameo from the main protagonist of her Fairy Garden Mystery Series, Courtney Kelly. Obviously, the writing style is the same, and some of the locations are already familiar, but the focus is far more on the alternative therapies and natural remedies a wellness centre would offer. I hope this series will be as successful as her other series as it was a fun read throughout and includes some great sounding recipes.

I was able to read an advanced copy of this thanks to NetGalley and Kensington Publishing/Kensington Cosies., but the opinions expressed are my own. This is a good series starter and easy to recommend.

#EssenceofFoulPlay #NetGalley is a first in a new series featuring Emma Brennan.
Emma's excited about the grand opening of her new shop, hoping to bring inner peace and balanced chakras to those in need.
Not everyone is as excited as Emma is, including Willow, another shop owner who believes in self care.
Willow's sudden death turns Emma's world upside down, placing her as the number one murder suspect.
She can only depend on herself to prove her innocence, maybe with the help of a fairy friend.

I enjoyed this book very much and I am looking forward to reading more in this series.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for selecting me to read an advanced copy of this book.

Prepare yourself so that you can be a rainbow in somebody else’s cloud.

Essence of Foul Play is the first book in this cozy mystery series set in beautiful Carmel-by-the-Sea.
Emma Brennan is opening her small business Aroma Wellness. It will offer all sorts of holistic/natural therapies, treatments, shop and cafe.
When Emma’s friend Willow is found dead the police see her as a suspect.
With the help of her grandmother Nanna Lisa they try to solve the case.
A delightfully, fun read with some great sounding recipes at the end of the story. Looking forward to the next book in this series.

I received an ARC prior to publication and decided to voluntarily review it.

What a wonderful new series! This is the perfect setting we've all been missing and didn't know we needed. Set in the seaside town of Carmel, our protagonist Emma opens an aroma therapy health and wellness spa. Excited to be offering her amazing strategies on living a more relaxing and stress free life, she endures the criticism of her mother and some of the neighborly concerns of offering another shop featuring "hoodoo and hullabaloo". One of those neighborly shop owners finds herself at the end of a deadly candlestick, a part of the peace offering basket Emma gifted to her. Emma quickly finds herself in the middle of a murder investigation, as the main suspect, with a local detective that's not really looking to have her help exonerate her name. Throughout the story we learn more about our characters, the intricacy of mother/daughter relationships and the connections they share with each other and the town. Through Emma's wonderful grandma, we learn that some in their close knit group are gifted with the sight of fairies who show in their most needed times. Will Emma find her fairy during this investigation? The pages turn fast in this cozy mystery, with great character building and a tight mystery storyline, readers won't want to miss this new series by an author we've grown to know and love.

I always look forward to a new series, especially from one of my favorite authors, and this book was no exception. I was excited by the setting as my favorite series from this author is centered in the area as well. I got a kick out of the Nane Lissa character; she’s the kind of grandmother I always dreamed of. But… I wasn’t crazy about Emma; maybe she’ll grow on me. Sierra, I think, will be a great character as well. I also like the spa aspect, which isn’t the usual type of setting. The mystery was okay, but I knew almost instantly who the killer was. I feel that this series will improve with each book; after all, the first time I read the fairy series, I wasn’t a big fan, but after the second book, I became one.

What an amazing start to a new series! I was so excited to return to Carmel-by-the-Sea and get a new POV of my favorite cozy California town, and Daryl Wood Gerber did not disappoint. It was nice to see some familiar faces from the Fairy Garden mysteries (no worries if you haven’t read them, but I highly suggest you do— they’re also fantastic!), but I have to admit I might love Emma and the Aroma Wellness spa even more. As a meditating, sound bath-loving, essential oil enthusiast myself, I felt like I found my new fictional BFF. The description of the spa and its services made me feel a little zen just by reading, and it prompted me to renew my focus on my inner wellness (thanks for the sign, Universe!!)

The mystery itself was incredibly well-plotted, and I honestly didn’t have the foggiest clue as to whodunnit. I was surprised by the twists that were thrown in and actually gasped out loud when everything was revealed, so kudos to Gerber for knocking that one out of the park. As with the Fairy Garden series, there was just enough magic sprinkled in the storyline to make my heart happy, and the healthy recipes included all sound delicious. I also picked up a great tip for making mahi-mahi, and it seems so simple that I can’t possibly mess it up (*fingers crossed!*)

I’ve loved everything written by Gerber, but this one truly checked all the boxes for me. I worked third shift and then stayed up to read the entire book in one sitting— and as someone who: a) hates third shift and b) loves sleep, that’s probably the biggest compliment I’ve ever given an author. I absolutely can’t wait for the next one!!

I had recently read another cozy with near similar subject matter so I tried to go into this book with an open mind. I wound up enjoying it a lot more than the other story. I have never been to Carmel but I think the author does a great job painting a picture of the quaint town (my stepmom goes yearly). However, I think the wealth of the area is downplayed quite a bit. I was a little put off by the fact that the main character probably would be nowhere near as ambitious if her grandmother wasn't providing housing and funding to her shop. It sounded a little like she was starting with nothing and making this grand spa and while the relationship with her grandmother is rock solid, she does not give enough credit to her bankrolling the operation.

Emma Brennan has studied meditation and wants to bring a wellness spa to the small town of Carmel, CA. She has opening day jitters and has a very public argument with a rival spa-owner, supposedly a friend of hers. This friend ends up dead and Emma is the main suspect. Determined to clear her name (based on EXTREMELY circumstantial evidence), she slyly investigates to find out who the real killer, with the help of her librarian grandmother, who knows everyone.

I liked the book insomuch that I want to visit Emma's spa. Quite badly in fact. Some of the New Age treatments in this book might be a bit out there for some, but if you have ever been to California are not quite so far-fetched. I appreciated Emma's commitment to her craft and bringing peace to the population. I also liked that her sleuthing was very hands off because sometimes I think it odd that protagonists go around interrogating people and it doesn't seem to bother them in the slightest. I appreciated that trope did not make it into this book.

Overall, this promises to be a good start to a series. Emma's cat, Vivi, is a delight and I hope she is included in a substantial amount of the plots in upcoming books.

My thanks to Kensington and Netgalley for this ARC.

I am very excited to see what the rest of this series has in store. This is the first book and it was a great start.

I love to read cozy mysteries and Daryl Wood Gerber is one of my favorite authors of the genre. I enjoyed the mystery a lot. There were some twists and turns throughout the book and I really didn’t know who the killer was until the very end.

I really enjoyed the aromatherapy aspect. There were essential oils and crystals mentioned and their uses were explained and I learned a lot of stuff that I didn’t know about them.

There were mentions of fairies in the book and I think it added to the setting and the atmosphere of the book. It wasn’t too prevalent that it turned me off to the story.

I definitely look forward to more books in this series. Thank you so much to the author and Cozy Mystery Review Crew for an advance copy of this book.

Emma is opening a new spa in Carmel. Her friend/business rival Willow is not happy and lets that fact be well known. When Willow is killed with an item from a basket that Emma sent her, suspicion falls squarely on Emma.
With quirky characters and a fabulous setting, Essence of Foul Play is a great start to a new mystery series. It touches base with the Fairy Garden series which adds to the pool of fantastic characters but reading the other series is not necessary to enjoy Essence of Foul Play. The writing is fantastic. The humor and well written mystery keeps the pages turning and the reader guessing until the end. I highly recommend Essence of Foul Play to all cozy mystery readers.

Essence of Foul Play features fairies and Vivi, the cat. It's a cozy and cute mystery--a little too cute for me. The setting of a spa with aromatherapy and a charming Nana was fun, but this was a miss for me.

Emma Brennan has moved back to Carmel with the help of her Nana to open a shop/cafe and spa amidst other high end new age shops and restaurants. Her mother is an interesting fashionista who Does Not Approve.
But on opening day, the other shop owner is found dead with evidence linking Emma to the deed. Then things REALLY get interesting!

I felt right at home reading this series since it has the same setting and some same characters from the author’s Fairy Garden Mysteries. I absolutely loved that series and now this companion series is gonna be so much fun! Emma was a great main character and I loved her grandma, someone readers will recognize as Ms. Reade the librarian except in this series she’s Nana Lissa or just Nana, a really amazing lady. Emma’s spa employes/friends were awesome too and that Meryl was such a hoot!

The showdown was a good one, exciting and tense but Emma had things under control by the time the police arrived. I think the good detective’s finding he’s got another one on his hands a lot like Courtney Kelly as far as wanting to solve investigations. The ending of the book was just too sweet and special! I can’t wait for the next book now!

Thank you so much NetGalley and Kensington Books for the advance copy of this book.

I have been a fan of Ms Gerber’s for some time now. When I read the first of the Fairy Garden books, I was impressed. The Essence of Foul Play is once again set in the lovely town of Carmel, California and features several of the characters from the other books in this setting. A charming new cast of characters are introduced here and they are embroiled in a murder mystery.

The new characters are mostly spa oriented characters and we learn about sound baths and several meditation styles. A very welcome new community group.

My only complaint (not a big one) is that the title leads us to think of essential oils and the healing powers. There was slight mention of them, but not enough IMHO.

Otherwise, I thoroughly enjoyed this book and will be watching for the next.

I am a huge fan of Daryl Wood Gerber's Fairy Garden Mysteries, so when I found out she was writing another series that takes place in the same cozy setting of Carmel-by-the-Sea, complete with fairies, I did not turn down the opportunity to read and review an ARC of Essence of Foul Play. Emma Brennan is preparing to open her new spa business, Aroma Wellness. Everything is going smoothly until a rival business owner is found murdered. To make matters worse, Emma is the prime suspect. In order to clear her name, Emma sets out to figure out what really happened and who the culprit is.

What I loved most about this book, and what will keep me coming back for more, was the setting. This is the first time I've read a cozy mystery centered around a spa business. I found this so refreshing. In the midst of a murder investigation, Emma and her staff continue to provide services for their clients. I found myself fully immersed in these services. For example, as she instructs her clients to breathe mindfully in a specific way, I found myself following along with my own mindful breathing. The entire atmosphere felt light and airy, much like the Fairy Garden Mysteries.

Speaking of the Fairy Garden Mysteries, I was pleasantly surprised to see appearances of characters, including the fairies, from that series in this book. There is a good mix of new characters, including a cozy cat companion, and familiar ones from the Fairy Garden Mysteries. It made sense to include some of the same characters since it is set in the same area. I've never read a crossover book like this and I am here for it. I'm not sure if there will be more Fairy Garden Mysteries published (I hope there are!), but if there aren't, we can at least visit with those characters in this book. How clever and comforting! And as usual in Daryl Wood Gerber's cozies, we are provided with a list of characters in the front of the book. I always find this helpful. I was mostly able to keep all the characters straight in my mind, but I did refer back to the list a few times.

If you have not read the Fairy Garden Mysteries, fear not. You will not feel lost reading this book. While several characters from the previous series are in this one, it is still very much its own story and, in many ways, the characters felt new. I also want to make it very clear that this book is not about fairies. They make appearances, but they do not play a huge role in the overall story.

With this being a first in series, there is the challenge of introducing us to the setting and characters, while keeping the mystery moving. While I enjoyed the story, I did feel at times the description of the setting disrupted the flow of the mystery. I will say, I did not figure out the whodunnit. I was shocked when all was revealed. I love when I didn't figure it out, but it comes together in a logical way. I'm hopeful that now that we're familiar with the setting and main characters, the next book in this series will have a mystery that takes center stage.

Another hope I have for future installments has to do with the setting. While I really enjoyed the spa setting, it saddens me that it is likely not one where I could receive services. Throughout the book, but especially in the beginning, there is a lot of talk about stairs. Even the delivery person had to use the stairs, and had an unfortunate mishap as a result. I wish there was a wheelchair accessible entrance that the reader was aware of. Based on my interpretation, it doesn't seem that one exists. I'm pleased to say that there is a lot of diversity with the characters in several different ways, but not when it comes to people with disabilities. There doesn't necessarily need to be a character with a physical disability. I just want to know that this is a place where disabled individuals, like myself, could receive services. In fact, it would benefit all of their clients and employees to make it accessible. It is my wish that a ramp or elevator can be installed that is front and center like the stairs.

But make no mistake. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and I will definitely read the next one whenever it is released. (I hope there will be another one!) The characters have depth. Not all relationships are perfect, just like in real life, but it will have you rooting for them. If you want a relaxing cozy mystery with a side of murder, I highly recommend Essence of Foul Play (Aroma Wellness Mystery 1), by Daryl Wood Gerber. And while this isn't a culinary cozy, there are several delicious-sounding recipes at the end of the book that you may want to try.

This book releases on Tuesday, March 25, 2025. Many thanks to Daryl Wood Gerber for providing me with an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review. All thoughts and opinions expressed are my own.

This is a delightfully intriguing start of a new series, set in a new, elegant spa in Carmel, California. The setting appealed to me, having always wanted to see Carmel in person. I honestly did not know there were so many facets to a luxury spa! Emma, a young proprietor, has attended to every detail while receiving expert guidance from Aunt Sophie, who owns and runs her highly successful spa in Sedona, Arizona.

Sierra, Emma’s cousin, is her business partner and best friend. Sierra is the chef and manager of the café at Aroma Wellness. Their grandmother, Nana Lissa, invested in their education so they could live their dreams, and provided valuable input as they planned the business. Emma is closer to Nana Lissa than to her mother, Kate, who wants Emma to get a stable teaching position.

The cousins differ in one respect. Emma wants to see and have a fairy, believing in the fascinating creatures since Nana Lissa told her about them. Sierra has the “I’ll believe it if I see it” mindset. Emma offers what some consider “woo-woo” services that other spas don’t, including sound baths, mindfulness sessions, and other healing practices. Within 24 hours, they will differ in another way. Emma will become a person of interest in a murder, while Sierra becomes her partner in crime solving.

Willow is a college friend of Emma. She owns a nearby spa, Mystic Waters, and is furious that Emma is opening hers nearby. Willow forgot that she and Emma had discussed it several times. Emma reminded Willow that their services appealed to two different types of clients. Willow left, hoping Emma’s opening will be a bust. Emma put together a “peace offering” gift basket to give Willow later. Willow had been confronted, outdoors, by her landlord, who was giving her two days to pay her overdue rent before he threw her out.

The night before the grand opening, Emma and Nana Lissa met for dinner. Lissa, who is head librarian and involved in many community groups, knew a great deal about many diners. Several people knew Emma, but refused to wish her and her spa well, especially those who didn’t like the “New-Agey” stuff. After dinner, Emma saw Willow return to her spa, weeping. Emma took the gift basket to her, which she appreciated. They chatted a bit. Willow told her of ghostly noises and hangup calls she has been getting at the spa. They parted on better terms.

Emma and her staff celebrated the customers and the joy of opening day until Emma’s mother ran to the spa, disheveled and upset. Willow had been found murdered in her spa by Indy, a woman who had criticized Willow at the restaurant. Indy told police she saw Emma in Mystic Waters with Willow last evening, then found Willow this morning when walking past again. The murder weapon was in the gift basket from Emma, so her fingerprints would be on it. Detective “By-the-Book” Summers was extraordinarily interested in Emma a suspect.

Many characters were introduced, so I did not get to know anybody well. Emma’s almost sole focus, until the murder, was opening the spa. Kate divulged personal secrets to Emma, disclosing more to her daughter than ever before. I hope to see more growth in their relationship. I appreciated the lack of romance while focusing on the spa and her relationships with family and friends. Over time, I would like to greater depth to both the characters and relationships. I greatly appreciated the list of people at the beginning of the book.

Emma took the burden of solving the murder herself after becoming the person of interest. There were several possible suspects, some with strong motives. It wasn’t a surprise to learn who really did it, despite how sure several people were that the person could not do such a thing. This mystery has elements that many will enjoy, including the setting, spa and café offerings (recipes included), and the fairies that some claim inhabit Carmel. I recommend this novel to those who appreciate those elements as well as a well-crafted cozy mystery.

An excellent debut for what promises to be a charming, fun, and magical new cozy mystery series.

Essence of Foul Play is the first book in veteran author Daryl Wood Gerber’s charming, fun, and magical new Aroma Wellness Mystery series and introduces readers to the quirky but often contentious residents of Carmel while solving a puzzling and ugly murder. Emma Brennan opens her new spa with its intriguing lineup of alternative self-care treatments in her hometown. Still, she encounters some surprising resistance to her business model, especially from her own mother and her college friend, Willow Shafer, a fellow spa owner who offers only traditional spa services. When Willow is found murdered the morning of Emma’s grand opening, Emma immediately becomes “a person of interest” in her death because a witness reported she saw Emma entering Willow’s business the night before.

The main character, Emma Brennan, is not only a new spa owner but now an amateur sleuth as well in order to clear her name as a suspect in the death of her old friend. She continually keeps a tight rein on her emotions, uses calming techniques, and always tries to redirect her frustrations with others in a positive direction. In addition to the mystery, I really enjoyed reading about all the different methods she employed to stay grounded and in control, and the descriptions of the variety of services her spa offered were fascinating. I was ready to book an appointment myself.

As the first book in a new series, the author must build an entire community of people who live there but do it in such a manner as not to overload the reader. Ms. Gerber does just this with a subtle and natural hand and even lends further assistance to the reader by providing a cast of characters at the front of the book. Readers familiar with the author’s Fairy Garden Mystery series, also set in Carmel, may recognize some cross-over characters who make an appearance. Emma’s world is full of quirky individuals and like-minded souls, such as her grandmother, town librarian, and fairy-friendly Lissa Reade. Yet, there are also quite a few cranky, rude, and downright mean-spirited folks among her acquaintances. One publicly proclaims to Emma’s face, “We hope your business goes poof.” I was shocked but also compelled to keep reading to see if that one would get her comeuppance!

The plot moves quickly, first with all the preparations for the spa’s Grand Opening, and as the murder is discovered early in the story, the action and suspense never let up. With all the high emotions in Emma’s circle, there were plenty of possible murder suspects along the way to check off the list. But as the story progresses and the red herrings drop off, there is a satisfying final resolution.

I recommend ESSENCE OF FOUL PLAY to cozy mystery readers, especially those who would enjoy a spa setting and cool, alternative self-care services.

Essence of Foul Play by Daryl Wood Gerber is a new series set in the same world as Courtney and her fairy Fiona.

Will Emma start a new life here in Carmel-by-the-Sea?

Emma Brennan
Emma Brennan is the librarian, Lissa Reade's granddaughter, and is opening a new shop called Aroma Wellness. Her shop is set up for meditation, along with a gift shop and a cafe added to it. Her cousin, Sierra, runs the cafe, and I love the cousins. Emma is a great character who is trying her hardest to not only clear her name but also make sure that the person who killed her friend is found. I like Emma and wouldn't mind going to her shop to look around and try out her massages. I would probably also try the cafe to see what that is like.

The Mystery
On the opening day of Aroma Wellness, Kate, Emma's mom, came to tell Emma that Willow was murdered with a candlestick. The night that Willow died, Emma gave her a basket that had a candlestick in it, and that happened to be the murder weapon. Emma felt like the police were only looking at her, and she knew that she would never kill her best friend. She decided to go and find out who killed her friend. I have to say I guessed who did, but never guessed the motive.

Five Stars
My rating for Essence of Foul Play by Daryl Wood Gerber is five stars. I also recommend this book. You don't even have to have read the Fairy Garden Mysteries series to read it. Ms. Gerber is a great storyteller, and I love this series as much as I do the Fairy Garden one. I can't wait to see what Ms. Gerber does with this one.

Ms. Gerber has added recipes in the back of the book—some of these sound great. The recipes are Brioche Bread Gluten-Free Version, Honey Banana Muffins with Coconut Flour, Kale-Banana Protein Smoothie, Lemon Butter Cookies, Oatmeal Honey Chocolate Cookies, Oatmeal Honey Chocolate Cookies Gluten-Free Version, Peanut Butter Maple Protein Bars, Raspberry-Turmeric Smoothie, and Avocado Face Mask.

Thank you for dropping by! I hope you enjoyed this review of Essence of Foul Play by Daryl Wood Gerber. Check out the other stops and giveaway if you have time.

Until the next time,

ESSENCE OF FOUL PLAY by Daryl Wood Gerber
The First Aroma Wellness Mystery

With the help of Nana Lissa and her cousin, Sierra, Emma Brennan is ready for the grand opening of her spa, Aroma Wellness. While there are other spas in Carmel by-the-Sea, Emma's is unique, offering sound baths and aromatherapy in addition to massages, manicures, and pedicures. The spa also has a cafe with healthy options run by Sierra and a gift shop carrying crystals, massage oils, and other goodies. Despite Emma previously sharing this information with her frenemy, Willow, Willow, who happens to run a traditional spa on the other side of town, is livid. And Willow isn't the only person angry. Indy and Palmer hate the idea of anything New Age and would like nothing better than for Emma's new business to fail. When Willow is found dead Emma is the one everyone remembers having an argument with her. Believing that she's the prime suspect Emma is determined to prove her innocence and find the real killer!

In ESSENCE OF FOUL PLAY Daryl Wood Gerber has created a close knit community of holistic healers adding to the charm of Carmel by-the-Sea. While I'm not one for traditional spas, no mani/pedis for me, I would love to spend time at Aroma Wellness Spa! I'd adore a sound bath and would even be willing to try a prickly pear massage. I know I'd also be doing some retail therapy in the gift shop and indulging in something from the cafe-hey, it's healthy! While Emma strives to make her spa a place of peace and serenity reality comes crashing in, literally and figuratively. It's sad that some people are so close minded when it comes to alternative healing and spiritual beliefs.

The mystery itself was intriguing with many suspects and possible motives. I appreciated Emma's method of sleuthing and enjoyed seeing her grandmother take the lead a few times. While several of the characters are downright nasty, there is a core of good-hearted people with whom you enjoy spending time. I also liked seeing several old friends from the Fairy Garden Mystery series.

A complex mystery with several moving parts ESSENCE OF FOUL PLAY is a feel good tale in more ways than one. Take some deep cleansing breaths, choose your affirmation, and make room in your library for this great new series!

What a lovely surprise to find myself back in Carmel-by-the-Sea with some good friends from the Fairy Garden Mystery series! Essence of Foul Play is an outstanding start to a new series – it contains the elements that I believe make for a perfect cozy – characters and setting so real you want to travel to the location just to spend time with them, a mystery that keeps you guessing to the end, a storyline that grabs you from the start, and something new to learn! Even after the murder was solved, I was ready for the book to continue.

Emma Brennan is opening an aromatherapy spa and is unfortunately confronted by a rival spa owner days before the opening. When the rival spa owner is found murdered, all eyes turn to Emma. It’s up to Emma and her friends and family to solve the murder before Emma’s spa closes as quickly as it opened!

It was a lot of fun to watch from the sidelines Emma’s trials and tribulations opening her new Aromatherapy Spa and participating in her relationship with her nana, cousin and eventually her mother. It was great being with Merriweather Rose of Song again too, which of course made me hopeful that Emma would someday see her own fairy, as we surely know one is there given Vivi’s antics in the garden! This setting is so well described and is such a character in the story that you can easily place yourself in the shops. The characters likewise are very well described and developed that they seem like real people and you wish you could set on the patio with Emma and Sierra and have tea and some of Sierra’s delightful food from the café.

The murder was difficult to solve. It was incredibly well-plotted with lots of twists and turns and I was stumped until the end. The connections between the characters added to the complexity of the story as well as the difficulty in solving the murder. All of the pieces eventually fell into place for the reveal of a very unexpected murderer.

As with all of Ms. Wood Gerber’s books Essence of Foul Play was a delight to read. Her books always leave you anticipating the next and I will very much look forward to the next in what is hopefully a very long series!

ESSENCE OF FOUL PLAY is the first book in the brand-new Aroma Wellness Mysteries by Daryl Wood Gerber. Set in the charming town of Carmel, California, I was delighted to find out that this new series is a spinoff from the author’s Fairy Garden Mysteries, with some overlapping secondary characters. While you don’t need to first read the Fairy Garden Mysteries, I thoroughly enjoyed the interaction with the new protagonist, Emma Brennan, with characters I already know and love as well as new characters introduced. (The author has thoughtfully included a list of characters at the beginning of the book to assist the reader.) Carmel, on its own, is a tempting setting, but paired with Emma’s new Aroma Wellness Spa, the setting becomes downright seductive. I was ready to book a trip within the first ten minutes of starting the book. Ms. Gerber’s strong descriptive skills bring it to life and I loved her relaxing mentions of spa treatments (some new to me and oh so intriguing) along with the sights, sounds, smells, textures, and tastes incorporated.

While all should be relaxation and mindfulness, trouble hits the new spa owner when her rival is found murdered and Emma becomes the only suspect. The author does an admirable job in setting up the conflict and making the reader feel invested in what happens. There are twists and turns in Emma’s desire to clear her name, and the story moves at a fast pace. I also liked that Emma’s cousin (who is also the new spa’s chef) and her grandmother help to find out information. With a bit of magical fairy dust sprinkled in, delightful characters, an adorable Birman cat, and a puzzling mystery to solve, this first book in a new series is sure to charm readers!

As with most of Daryl Wood Gerber’s books, you can count on some delicious recipes at the back of the book. Some recipes are decadent and other recipes are a healthful spin on what might be served at a spa.

I was provided with an advance copy. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

"Essence of Foul Play" is the first book in Daryl Wood Gerber's new Aroma Wellness series. The author does a wonderful job of setting the scene and introducing the characters (as is typical of a series debut) without neglecting the mystery aspect.

The basics: Emma is opening a new spa business with her cousin (who runs the attached cafe). A rival spa owner is murdered, Emma is implicated, and has to juggle trying to clear her name with managing her grand opening and first week of business.

Things that make this story great:
1. The setting in Carmel, California. The area is described beautifully, and makes the reader want to step right into the pages to enjoy it along with the characters.

2. The relationship between Emma and her cousin Sierra: The two are more like sisters, and their interactions are both entertaining and heart-warming.

3. Nana Lissa! The girls' grandmother, Lissa Reade, is the local librarian, and steals every scene she's in. (Readers of the Fairy Garden Mystery Series will already have met her, but this is a great chance to get to know her better!)

4. Speaking of the Fairy Garden Mysteries...fans of that series will run across plenty of familiar names and references. It's SO MUCH FUN to see old cozy friends playing a small part in this new series. (No worries if you haven't read any Fairy Garden books; everything you need to know to understand this book is included.)

5. A helpful list of names and roles in the town is included in the front. It's a handy reference!

6. The actual mystery is excellent. Emma talks to everyone who might potentially know anything about the crime, talks through her theories, and even makes a murder board. There are plenty of suspects to research, and all the clues fit together and make perfect sense in the end.

7. Cute pet alert! Emma has a Birman cat named Vivi. All descriptions of cat antics are delightful, realistic, and fun.

Definitely 5 chunks of perfect sharp cheddar.

Essence of Foul Play by Daryl Wood Gerber is the start of a new series which takes place in Carmel, right down the street from the Fairy Garden store. Ava Daft is opening a New Age spa complete with a cafe run by her cousin, Sierra, and her own essential oils. The whole thing is supported both emotionally and financially, by her grandmother, Sophie Reade, the local librarian, who everyone hopes will never die. Ava’s mother, Kate Brennan, is just the opposite of her mother and sees failure in every step Ava takes. She wanted her to be an English teacher. The place is ready to open and everyone is anxious, in varying degrees. Then the worst happens: Ava’s friend, Willow, is murdered, and Ava appears to be a suspect. Just as her spa is ready to open. The fact is, the police never told her, or even hinted, that she was a suspect. In fact, they barely questioned her. But, she knew, and she also knew she would have to find the murderer herself.

This new series is going to be as good as the last, loaded with fairies and people who believe in fairies. Ava believed, but had yet to see one. Very entertaining. Her grandmother had bonded with one and told her to wait, she would see them eventually. She really needed one now, to help her solve this murder. She had a list of suspects, pretty much the same one the police had, but they kept coming up with alibis. She roped her cousin into investigating with her: Sherlock and Watson. All she really managed to do was aggravate the detective. This is a book full of fun characters, just as the fairy garden series is. That’s what makes it so special. The mystery turns out to be a good one and Ava is the one to solve it. Gerber writes an easy-to-read, fun novel.
