The Demon King is Way Too Overprotective! Vol. 1

Rate this book
Yamada Seina's life is already teetering on the edge--between juggling high school, managing her friendships, and covering her rent solo, she barely has time to breathe. But when she nearly falls prey to a scammer and loses her hard-earned rent money, things go from bad to worse. Just when it seems like she's hit rock bottom, a mysterious (and incredibly handsome) stranger with horns swoops in, claiming he's a demon king who's crossed dimensions just to be with her. Why? Because, according to him, Seina is the reincarnation of his lost love!
Skeptical but unable to shake him off, Seina finds herself with a new, otherworldly roommate who's hell-bent on keeping her safe, whether she wants his protection or not. What's a girl to do when her biggest problem suddenly becomes a supernatural--and superhot--roommate?

Despite appearances, it's actually pretty wholesome and cute. I like the character designs, even if they aren't unique. It loses stars because even though it's sweet and romantic, it also portrays some troubling relationship dynamics that remind me of the manga I read back in the early 2000s (male lead pushes his feelings onto female lead, possessive, fated mate, knight in shining armor syndrome, so on and so forth..) Haven't we moved past some of these male lead archetypes in romance?

And the situation of a demon king from another realm coming to find you in modern society was accepted way too easily. Kind of makes me think they created this merely as part of a trend...

Definitely a cute one.

The story is pretty simple and the word quaint keeps coming to mind. I think this one's going to be a short one, maybe two volumes? Instead of focusing on complex story stuff the focus seems to be entirely on the trauma and love that the demon has to deal with. The main character is the girl but she's more of a swept along kind of character while all the intrigue and emotions and passions really seem to be driven by the male lead. I think for a short run this would be a cute series but I don't think it has the substance for a longer run. I could be wrong though, I'll definitely read the next volume to see.

I was hesitant at first to begin this series simply because at first glance it appears it may have some *ahem* questionable adult themes. But fortunately, after having read through this first volume, I believe I may be safe from such “smutty material.” Not that it doesn’t have some intimate scenes, but it seems like it will be a tame series as a whole.

The book starts off introducing our FL, high school student Seina Yamada. (I really wish they would make our female protagonist’s a little bit older than a high schooler. Sigh). Seina is definitely living life on hard mode, as she has lost her parents at a young age and now recently her grandmother who raised her in her parents place. She lives alone juggling high school and multiple part-time jobs in order to afford her tiny apartment. So when the swoon-worthy Demon King comes swooping in to save her from a would be imposter thief, her life literally flips upside down. She no longer finds herself living alone after the Demon King claims to know her from her many previous lives and that he himself would be moving in with her to protect her from now on. Pretty crazy first-time meeting (and the fact that she just allows him to move in with her lol) but pretty amusing to read the reactions from Seina herself in dealing with her new “roommate.”

The Demon King, whose name is Damon, is certainly intimidating and gruff, but he has a pretty big soft spot when it comes to Seina. Which of course he would because he has literally traveled through dimensions to find her reincarnated self in order to stay by her side and protect her from death. The love he has for her is pretty intense, especially for Seina who has no recollection of her previous life, but he has loved her for so long that he can’t help but to come on strong. Lol

And Damon has a lot of respect for Seina, which I greatly approved of. From averting his gaze after she ran out screaming from the bathtub from a large bug in her bathroom (which I can totally relate to), to him taking her to see the bright lights (which he hates) and summoning cats simply because he knows she likes these things. He’s very sweet…though he needs to work on his jealousy. That last chapter didn’t paint him in a very good light, but I’ll forgive him…this time. Lol

Upon reaching the end, a new character is introduced, who could possibly be being set up to be the villain of the story, so my interest is definitely peaked at this new revelation. I’m definitely continuing on with this series and am looking forward to the next volume with great anticipation!

Luckily, the only tall, dark, and handsome demon king I’m interested in is one who’s a pathetic loser man when he’s in love.

Otherwise, I really wouldn’t like this.

So, kudos to this story.

If you also enjoy a supernatural romance where the MMC is the dark, dangerous type who’s only soft for the gal he loves (to a sometimes *problematic*, “I’ll end you if you touch her” extent), you would probably like this.

Two-thirds of this story is pretty cute. It really taps into the female gaze.

I mean, who doesn’t want a partner who wants to take care of you, make sure you’re surrounded by the things you love, and who always shows up when you could use help (asked for or not)?

Talk about fantasy fulfillment.

Anyway.

If you’re a reader who’s also had some reservations about dark fantasy romances—for obvious reasons (i.e. they’re usually pretty bad or toxic)—I’d recommend checking this one out.

I’m a MAJOR hater with a long, storied history of hating dumb romantasy stories and I mostly enjoyed this one. I can’t think of a bigger endorsement~

~3.5

I’m interested, but the story and characterization was definitely weak. I like the concept, and how the demon king is so devoted and how he’s attempting to acclimate to the modern world. It’s mostly how Seina is reacting to him, and then also immediately letting him live with her with no protest? And how she’s growing so attached, not wanting him to leave, within like half a day of living together? That felt too rushed.

Also, why does he need to join her at school? I feel like he should get a job or something instead? Why do immortal supernaturals always end up going to school? I’m tired of that trope. But maybe that’s my fault for not realizing how old she was before starting this one.

3.5★ rounding up because I really liked some of the panels. this was a way less spicy, but somehow more problematic, version of 'seduced by the demon king'. seina is aged down to be a high school girl, and the demon king is way more possessive. I do like the aspect of his powers and how chaste he is most of the time....plus, seina being like 'it's WAY TOO EARLY to even talk about marriage' is a nice realistic twist given how she accepts him living with her pretty quickly lol. this is definitely not perfect, but I will give the next volume a try for sure.
