Cryptids are a thing I find fascinating but know little about, and this works as a decent whistle-stop tour around the world of different examples, categorised into broad typings, with some interesting background on the ones covered including pretty balanced commentary on each.In addition each section having a 10 interesting facts section, which sometimes touched on other Cryptids that had not been covered in the main section.
My only complaint was the amount of time given specifically to Bigfoot compared to all the others featured, although this can be put down to the amount of evidence/sightings that are easily available to research.
With that said though, this was a really interesting read, and well worth a consideration, especially as a potential introduction to the process.

"THE UNIVERSE IS NOT ONLY STRANGER THAN WE IMAGINE, IT’S STRANGER THAN WE CAN IMAGINE-J. B. S. HALDANE"
The book with its surprisingly detailed dataset on cryptids confirms the above famous quote. I have read some books on cryptids theories. But this book will remain in my favorite archive due to author's engaging words and wit. Moreover, each chapter emphasizing different sets of cryptids (land-bound/water-bound/sky-bound) with unique theories. Sometimes, the theories seem absurd. However, sometimes they are quite interesting poking biological or supernatural elements. For instance, Komodo dragon/giant squid, Coelacanth, Lerna Hydra and Cetus have a unique appeal while the Leviathan reminds me of Lovecraftian fictions. Contextually, the conversion from a cryptid to a real new animal is fun too. Platypus was once considered a prank by some skilled taxidermist and scientists even tried to prove the same! How funny is that?
Skyfish/Airrod's connection with author's childhood documentary and motion blur/dimension theory fascinates me. I was so engaged with the cryptids that I kept watching YouTube for more fantasy elements. However, the related misadventures are fun too. For instance, the transformation of the "Nessie" named "aquatic dinosaur without dorsal fin" to a Basking Shark's decomposed body is disappointing but hilarious. Then comes the funny hoaxes (with hoaxing tools) and interesting psychological traits related to it. Father of Bigfoot, Fiji mermaid, Herrik brother's Jackalope (unique Papilloma virus connection), Kasai Rex, Okapi and Fairies made me think that illustrations would have make this book more interesting.
All the ape-related hoaxes including bigfoot and Yeti are fun. But I believe they could be real too. Interestingly, most of those ape-like cryptids are female (are those intentional provocation?). Contextually, the Ostman abduction and coffee strategy are ROFL funny. Although author confirms his fascination for water-bound cryptids, I have my obsession with land-bounds with supernatural elements. I was anxiously waiting for Skinwalkers (and black-eyed children) but Chupacabra, Jersey devil (the mother's curse was haunting), Fresno nightcrawler (odd locomotion), Zana, Mothman, Ogopogo, and Kraken captivate me. The thunderbird /Ropen with bioluminescent glow and the witch-owl of Filipino have fantasy-like attributes. Indigenous legends make the theories haunting. Lizard people, death worm, Kappa maki hit different. However, Wendigo psychosis, Grootslang's bottomless pit and Richtersveld caves remind me of various adventures and legends. Finally, the Gévaudan beast and silver bullets kind of challenge our distrust on werewolf theory.
The backstories and legends related to cryptids often focus on certain cultural elements. So, I believe a culture-enriched search would have help us to find more truth about those cryptids.
Overall, a great read but I miss some relevant pictures.

A very good overall view of cryptids. The author notes there is no absolute proof they exist. He defines the terms and goes on to examine a whole bunch of cryptids.
He also covers cryptid fakes such as the Fiji Mermaid.
He covers the most well-known ones such as Bigfoot and the Loch Ness Monster and also the Yeti. Here's where I have a question. If the Yeti exists in such a harsh environment where does it get its food? There's not a whole lot of life forms where it's found.
He covers the well-known ones such as the Jersey Devil and the Mothman and also ones that are not that well known.
Here's where I have another question and it relates to almost all the cryptids. If they have been seen for a long time, and some have been seen for a very long time, then logically either they have a majorly big lifespan or they reproduce and have children and these basically carry the legends on.
But in order to have children there has to be a large enough breeding population. Otherwise you end up with inbreeding and gradually the species will die out.
So how do we keep getting cryptids? I haven't seen anyone else bring this up yet, though.
The author also covers various types of cryptids such as water-dwelling, reptilian, insectoid and the Loveland Frogman.
There's a lot of good stuff in this book and it's well worth reading.
This book was a fun and engaging dive into the world of cryptids! I’ve always enjoyed reading about mysterious creatures and folklore, and I appreciated the way the author structured the information. It's detailed without feeling dry, informative yet still entertaining. It had a great flow that kept me interested without ever feeling like I was reading a textbook. The mixture of history, pop culture & scientific speculation made for an enjoyable read, and I liked how each chapter focused on a different category of cryptids. It was clear that the author put effort into balancing skepticism with curiosity, allowing readers to explore the possibilities without pushing one narrative over another. If you’re fascinated by Bigfoot, Nessie, or the countless lesser-known cryptids lurking in the shadows of legend, this book is definitely worth picking up. It’s a great mix of facts, theories, and fun storytelling that makes it perfect for both believers and skeptics alike! Thank you to the author & Book Sirens for the ARC, I am leaving this review voluntarily with my honest opinion.
If you want an introduction to the world of cryptids, this is the one. The author uses a friendly narrative style and shares his interest and fascination with those creatures in a very organized way. He does not embellish or fabricate more fiction or mystery; why need to? He has plenty of firsthand hand stories from witnesses through time who have claimed to see the creatures. In fact he even added creatures that are proven to exist that are nightmarish. Fascinating topic. I have read books of this genre, and at a point, they become too deep in theories of their origins. It is a lovely book for people who want to know the basics of these creatures and their history. Though I received an advance review copy for free, I am leaving this review voluntarily and it was a joy to read. Something to read at night, and I could see this as a book to share stories around the campfire; yes, that is good. Make sure you zip up the tent well afterwards, as one might be lurking about.
Thank you to BookSirens for letting me read an ARC of this book in exchange for my honest review!
I went into this thinking it would be a silly fun time, but this was a really well put together informational book. The were a ton of facts about animals who had been considered mythological before they were discovered and verified to be real. I learned about a few more cryptically that I hadn’t heard of before, which is always super amazing. There was a lot of great information about different hoaxes that had happened in the past. Every sections was ended with a list of relevant fun facts, which I particularly loved.
This is a fun little book on cryptids. It was well written, and had a decent variety of creatures included. It was slim, with a limit to the amount of detail and stories included for most beasties, hence the 3 stars instead of 4 for me.
A big cryptid fan won't find a lot they don't already know, but for newer or younger readers with less experience in the subject it would be a great intro read.
I’ve always been curious about these so called cryptids and monsters. I found it to be an entertaining read. Good flow. I received a copy of the book and voluntarily leaving this review.
A very well written and fun book about cryptids. I have read quite some books on this topic and yet this book still had quite some new (for me) cryptids.
