I read a lot of mangas with high school settings, they remind me of a simpler time in my life. And while many of them can be formulaic, some are truly wonderful. And I think I’ve just stumbled upon a real gem of a series, which is funny considering I got the recommendation from TikTok, and we all know how fickle the algorithm can be.
I’m in awe of this mangaka. The story centers around the koto, and even though you can’t hear the music, it somehow doesn’t matter. The meticulous way the author illustrates the characters playing their instruments and the added atmospheric details that heighten the tension can elicit goosebumps. You feel every emotion you would if you were actually hearing the music.
Each character experiences believable growth and realistic struggles, even the secondary ones. It’s clear throughout the story that the author cares deeply for every single character with how well-constructed each arc is. The antagonists are believable, and you find yourself empathizing with them because you understand where they’re coming from.
The romance is also incredible. This is a true slow burn, one that grows and matures with the characters, which makes it even more enjoyable.
If you are considering reading this series, I am begging you to just do it. I wish I could experience it all over again.
