This is a love story wrapped in horror, and I loved every page of it. Not everyone gets the cookie-cutter Hallmark life, and this book embraces that truth.
We follow Harrison, who begins visiting a very particular place: a white room where he can speak to a ghost. What starts as curiosity turns into something deeper; learning about her life, confronting his own past, and slowly working through his trauma.
At its core, this isn’t just a ghost story. It’s about the people who truly see us, who accept our baggage, and who choose to love us anyway. Amidst the horror of Lass Castle, its secrets, its pain, and its shadows, there’s also forgiveness, healing, and the fragile hope of two people finding each other.
It’s haunting, yes, but also unexpectedly tender. Horror and love don’t often walk hand in hand, but here, they absolutely do.
Wooooow! Intense story, Did not see the ending coming at all! Creepy "Castle" and ghosts, characters with trauma, and mysterious voices and a ghost girl. Harrison has been seeing Elle ever since he was a little boy, but that all changes when he's an adult. One last meeting, looks different and physically touches him, scratching her name on his arm. This is when this story gets good.
The first thing that caught my attention was the cover, creepy and mysterious. The White Room is a supernatural suspense, a murder mystery but with some pretty heavy topics. (Make sure you check the trigger warnings before reading it.) Within these pages you’ll find the love story of a troubled young man and his guardian angel, Elle. What you’ll also find is a story of missing kids and a haunted castle, the very castle a girl named Elle grew up in. This felt like The Sixth Sense at first but then took a crazy turn in the direction of something way more sinister. I couldn’t put this book down once I started reading, it went in a direction I didn’t see coming and the ending had my jaw on the floor! The White Room will definitely be on my list of books I recommend. If you can go into it blindly, do so! You won’t regret it.
I received an ARC of this book in exchange for my honest review. Thank you BookSirens and Holly Knightley for sending this book for review consideration. All opinions are my own.
Harrison is a man haunted by trauma and ghosts. During a near-death experience, he discovers The White Room, a strange liminal space between life and death. There he meets Elle, his guardian angel, and it becomes both his refuge and his obsession. To free Elle from her ghostly purgatory, Harrison travels to her childhood home, Lass Castle, where he’s drawn into mysteries that force him to confront both the supernatural and the darkest shadows of his past.
This is not your typical ghost story. Yes, there are haunted castles, apparitions, and eerie gothic touches, but the real horror here is human. Harrison’s history of abuse and trauma shapes every choice he makes, and Holly Knightly doesn’t shy away from portraying how messy, dramatic, and painfully human his reactions are. His fixation on Elle is both heartbreaking and unsettling—it’s a desperate attempt at connection from someone who has been broken by cruelty.
The novel blends genres beautifully. It has the atmosphere of gothic fiction, the suspense of a thriller, and the chills of supernatural horror all rolled into one. The pacing is sharp and the writing tight, making it very readable even though the subject matter is heavy. Trigger warnings are important here: child abuse, sexual violence, suicide, and betrayal all form the backbone of Harrison’s story. Even when not described in detail, the weight of these themes is impossible to ignore.
The ending is clever and devastating, pulling together threads from the beginning and adding one last shocking twist. As Harrison says, it feels like your brain has gone through a blender, and I couldn’t agree more.
At its core, this is a book about survival, grief, and human frailty. The ghosts are chilling, but it’s the very real scars of abuse and betrayal that linger the most. Dark, emotional, and thought-provoking, The White Room is a supernatural thriller that left me wrecked in the best way.
Well, that was horrifying. Which is what is expected from a horror novel. Usually, I choose ghost stories as my horror because those are usually less violent. This one is quite violent. I was expecting sort of a creepy historical castle vibe, and it was more straight horror. There needs to be a trigger warning for child abuse both physical and sexual. Lots of it. It's a shorter novel. There's nothing wrong with the writing or the plot. It's very tight. The book goes places I wasn't sure I wanted to go, but a lot of horror readers are here for that. The cover is amazing and should sell quite a few copies for that alone. I received an ARC from BookSirens.
Another wonderful book by Holly Knightley, a ghostly love story that pulls you into it's embrace and doesn't let go until it's finished telling you it's tale.
Really enjoyed this a lot, the players are rich and fully formed, and full of secrets, you feel what they feel, are scared by what they see and discover.
Very glad I got chance to read this!
I got a copy of this from BookSirens, and this is my honest review
Harrison has had a neck of a journey that he calls life. Abused, neglected and taken advantage of. Thinking Elle was helping him when in truth she was just as bad ok well worse. I'm glad that Harrison got some happiness.
This is an intriguing story. I found it to be suspenseful and heartbreaking at times. I read this book as an arc for free and am doing a review voluntarily. It is haunting in a way that makes you go whoa, what! I think it is worth the read. Happy Reading!
Holly Knightley is a master not only of suspense and horror, but also of character development, and this is so evident in one of her latest masterpieces, The White Room.
This is more than a supernatural love story between the protagonist Harrison, and a ghost-like entity known as Elle occurring in a Purgatory-like place called The White Room, it’s all about character development, and the way all of the characters in this yarn engage us! Thanks to Knightley’s skilled storytelling, the interactions between Jiles and Harrison, Vivian and Gogo, Troy, Nelson and the rest are certainly engaging, weaving subplot after subplot into a thoughtful and perplexing tapestry of suspense and wonder, as the reader also gets a distinct feeling that there is much more going on in Lass Castle and the orchid-room than meets the eye!
Knightley helps the reader to reach more than satisfying conclusions, as many surprise unmaskings occur, true love is finally reached, and all of this is tied together by any remaining threads in this mystery-come-thriller.
You’ll never guess the ending, as Knightley takes us by the hand, guiding us on a journey of mystery, suspense, and horror! Five out of five stars!
I was invested from the first page, it was really interesting overall. I wanted to know more about the characters and I really wanted to know everything about Elle!! She did end up getting a little lost in the story but it made sense and it was wrapped up in the end.
I liked the character development with Harrison, and I was truly rooting for him. I was also rooting for Elle and Gogo as the book went on, and I really loved their character development as well.
I was very iffy about the ending, just because it was so dramatic and messy. I understood where they were coming from, but to just be okay with it so soon after the fact was just not sold well to me. They are young and impulsive I get it, but that is well and truly beyond a stupid immature kid move. Glad they have each other though and are working through everything together.
Trigger warnings since they are not included in the book: Child SA mentions, a lot of them throughout the book, suicide attempts (multiple), mentions of torture, and mentions of general death/murder.

I received The White Room by Holly Knightley as an ARC read through BookSirens, and I’m grateful for the opportunity to read this thrilling work! This is the first Holly Knightly book I’ve read, but it won’t be the last.
This book had me intrigued the whole way through. I was constantly wondering, “Why is he acting like that? … What did she mean by that? … Well that was creepy - What was that about?” All the pieces of the puzzle came together in due time. And the twists and turns and surprises! I loved it! Just when I thought I had things figured out, another layer to the story was revealed.
The characters were deep, complex, and mysterious. I loved watching them evolve, and new relationships bloom.
There is trauma and abuse woven within the story. We can painstakingly work through our delicate issues - learn and grow from them; or we can let them control our lives. Which path will Harrison and his cohorts take?
I cannot say this enough—Holly Knightley knows how to write horror!
In this story, most of the characters are all pretty messed up to be blunt about it. Most are survivors of sexual abuse as children. Our main character, Harrison, was abused by his stepfather with his mother’s knowledge. His stepfather would hold a pillow over his face until he passed out before molesting Harrison. When Harrison was unconscious, he would enter what he called a “white room” a place between life and death and there he would meet a beautiful woman called Elle. And that is how our story begins. Once I started reading this, I just could not stop. Holly’s writing style is so atmospheric and just builds on the whole horror vibe. The plot is tight and just keeps moving from one thing to the next and I did not see that ending coming at all. This story will stay with me for a long, long time.

Each time I read a book by Holly Knightley I think it's my new favorite. The trend continues. The White Room is my new favorite. This was fantastic. My favorite scary stories are the ones that make me run the gamut of emotions, especially the ones that make me cry. I got choked up more than once reading this.
Harrison's experiences and trauma felt so painfully vivid and the setting at Lass Castle, and particularly the Castle's Keep, was so well written. Such a massive structure and yet it felt claustrophobic. And I could swear I could hear a pin drop during the scenes in the White Room.
Thank you to Holly Knightley and Book Sirens for the free digital advance review copy. I leave this review voluntarily and all thoughts expressed are my own.
The White Room is available now! Definitely check it out if you like ghost stories with some mystery and trauma.
Holly Knightley delivers once again with another page turning story. The White Room is a tale that grabs your attention and leaves you wanting more. The story of Harrison and Elle is a chilling one. One that involves mystery and many secrets. After Harrison agrees to help Elle, he realizes that there’s a lot more to Elle than he believed. Harrison is now compelled to learn more about Elle and what her story is and what happened to her. Holly always has the best twist and turns in her books. Its worth read. I never give spoilers because I don’t want to ruin it for anyone, but it’s just THAT good. I received this book as an ARC through BookSirens. Thank you to Holly and BookSirens for the opportunity.
Check Your Trigger Warnings ******* Okay, wow. You know that feeling when you wake up from a dream and can’t tell if you’re still asleep? Yeah.....that’s this book.
The White Room grabbed me by the soul, tossed me into a fog of angels, trauma, and eerie castle secrets, and refused to let go. Harrison’s brush with death opens a door he probably should’ve kept shut… because what’s waiting on the other side? Not peace, that’s for sure.
Lass Castle is equal parts haunted history tour and psychological trap, and I swear you can feel the cold walls watching you. And Elle? Guardian angel or something much darker? The deeper you go, the blurrier that line gets.
This story dances between heaven and horror, healing and haunting. It’s beautiful, twisted, and impossible to put down.
Harrison - My heart went out to him. Sexually abused by his stepfather from a young age. His mother was aware but turned a blind eye in exchange for booze and drugs.
Elle - Angel, monster, or both? To Harrison she was his angel, until she wasn't. Did his attempt to save her place other lives at risk?
Jiles - There is more to this young man than meets the eye. When his secrets were revealed, my heart went out to him too.
So many lives intrinsically woven around, and within, The Castle. Will the current incumbents survive with their lives and minds intact, or will they join the ranks of so many who came to The Castle before them? Keep the tissues on hand. You may find yourself needing them.
I received a free Advance Reader Copy of The White Room through BookSirens and have chosen to leave a review.
Thank you to the author and BookSirens for this arc!
I read the first novel in this series, Houses Have Secrets, and I LOVED it, so I had high hopes for this one as well.
I was not disappointed! This story hooked me from the very beginning and I thought I had the twist figured out, but it shocked me at the end! All of the characters were intriguing for different reasons, the setting was marvelous, and the little bits of lore sprinkled throughout hinting to the actual purpose of the orchids was top tier.
If The Sixth Sense and Crimson Peak had a lovechild, it would be called The White Room.
In the White Room, Holly weaves a beautiful story filled with gothic vibes and chilling mysteries that will get deep into your psyche. And those ghost orchids? They aren't just flowers. They're the lifeline between the living and the dead.
With its fast-paced, haunting, and emotionally layered themes, this supernatural thriller grabbed me from the first chapter and kept me enthralled throughout.
There's a lot of depth and a lot of backstory, which I feel is what Holly is well known for.
She is the type of author that can write a novel/novella and get to the chase and yet is still able to provide as much detail and information as she can, never once making the reader feel like they've missed out on something.
This is part of the Holly Knightley series knight time, and they can be read as a standalone. Standalone or not, this one will definitely stay with you, as does a lot of Holly's previous works.
✨️As a side note: For those of you who are worried about a book not grabbing you, I'll tell you this... There are no BORING BITS that will make you want to pick up another book.
It will keep you up at all hours of the night, giving you a bad hangover the next day even though you knew you hadn't been drinking.
Highly recommended for those that love Gothic or supernatural thrillers with a backstory and character development.
I love horror stories and this one is definitely unsettling. I love a good murder mystery. And I loved the protagonist, Harrison. There were so many twists and turns and usually I can guess what the twists are, but I couldn’t with this one. Check the trigger warnings, but I really recommend the book. It’s creepy and unsettling. And it’ll leave you guessing until the end.
First I will check off the boxes so to speak. Great world building. Intimate character development. A storyline that draws you in.
So my opinion is it is a very good book.
But it is also a much twisted and deep story. It deals with some subjects that will horrify you. Maybe upset you. But take my word it will entertain you if you let it. This is not my first time reading this authors work. It definitely did not disappoint me.

“You’re only as sick as the secrets you keep. Now be a good child and keep those secrets buried deep.” A darkly twisted tale with more turns than a mountain road at midnight.
Another thoroughly enjoyable read by Holly Knightley. This creepy story will have you wondering what’s lurking around the next pages you turn. Plenty of mystery, horror, and frights to keep you reading far into the night.
Several plot turns that feel like the floor just dropped from under your feet, hurtling you into darker levels.
In The White Room, Holly Knightley proves once more why she's a master of her craft. This is a genuinely surprising read, packed with so many unexpected twists and turns that it keeps you guessing until the very last page. Knightley's ability to craft a story so original and unpredictable is unmatched, and it makes this book a thrilling and unforgettable journey.

The story begins with a young Harrison feeling a strong sense of love toward the ghost of the hauntingly beautiful Elle whom he meets in a purgatorial state. From his attempts to help her into Heaven, he finds himself fighting evil while becoming romantically involved with his boss. Harrison's feelings toward Elle evolves into an emotional cyclone mesh of love and hate.
I enjoyed reading this romantic mystery built around a mansion that would have made Shirley Jackson proud.
Another book a I love by Holly Knightley. I had to buy both of them. This is a chilling novel with an unexpected twist. This one will keep you captivated until the end. A house will include secrets, hidden rooms, and a ghost orchid. After several visits to the White Room, Harrison became friends with an angel who led him to the Lass Castle. There's a lot of mystery surrounding everything.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Step inside The White Room… if you dare. 👻✨ Harrison Vogel’s near-death experience unlocks a chilling space where he meets Elle, a guardian angel who may not be what she seems. When the secrets of Lass Castle rise to the surface, reality itself begins to unravel. 🏰🕰️ Eerie, atmospheric, and full of ghostly suspense—this book kept me hooked till the end. 🖤
OMG!!! This was amazing!!! The story line amazing, plot twist 🤯. If you like paranormal stories with a mind blowing plot twist definitely check this out.
Imagine a ghost story, a guardian angel , and a haunted house wrapped in a mystery of murder and scary mayhem. This is the Halloween book of the season for 2025 folks. Really scary and super good.
An abused man's world becomes very compressed in a way that helps him deal with life. The author has done a fine job of painting a vivid picture of our protagonists coping mechanisms. This gives the story an extra layer of depth and texture that it might otherwise lack. The story itself doesn't really stray far from the proven formula of ghosts, haunted castles and hidden crimes from the past…….and it doesn't need to. For me, the reading experience has always been about how well the fabric of the story is woven together, not the literal plot line itself. The ending is solid with enough twists and turns to keep things interesting.
Give it this one a read and you probably won't be disappointed.
